[Q] Should I buy D4 or wait for D5 - Motorola Droid 4

I'm in canada currently running on a Verizon D3 i had a milestone before and before that a Cliq (yeah i know..) however seeing as it will never get ICS i'm asking myself if i should get a Droid 4 or wait to see if there a 5 with global
what you guys think

I came from a Bell Motorola XT860... This phone works a lot better than that one. If you can get a good deal on a D4 (it's been out almost 6 months now) go for it. I got mine for $300 and got it shipped up here. If you wait for the latest and greatest it will cost you more, and you don't know how long you'll be waiting...

Since you cannot use the LTE capabilities of the Droid 4, I would stick with D3.

FYI I'm getting between 4 and 5mbps from my carrier on HSPA+. For cellular service, there isn't much difference between Droid3 and Droid4 here in Canada, but the phone itself is a much better build and OS is a lot snappier.

Any word if T-Mobile US will be getting the Droid/Milestone?

I've been a WM fan for years but recently a friend got the Droid on Verizon's network and I got to play with it and really liked it.
I know I can get an Euro Milestone but don't want to give up 3G speeds here in the US.
Are there any talks of getting this phone or the new updated one on TMO?
forget it man in US if you want to buy a motorola droid the only way is verizon
Yeah, it's basically Verizon's version of the iPhone (since when they released it/a short while before they released it it they made all the comments on how the Droid could do so and so and the iPhone couldn't do so and so (which of course since it's the iPhone, there's quite a few things it won't do that the droid will xD) so it's Verizon's major competition with the iPhone), chances are they won't give it up. T-Mobile gets the Nexus one though, which is a fantastic phone (with the exception of the lack of a keyboard, but you'll get used to a touch screen keyboard after a while).

4G LTE

Sprint's changing their pricing in April, so I'm jumping bandwagon to Verizon. Hopefully I wont have to wait long after I cancel with them to get a Bionic.
Anyways, something that's been haunting my curiosity is, will the 4G LTE be a switch on the phone, or will it automatically switch to 4G when it's available?
Thanks in advance,
Overstew
P.S. If you have a source, that'd be nice, too.
It's gonna kick onto 4g where ever you get the coverage. No button pushing or switches.
And you'll probably pay extra for 4G even if you can't get it in your area. Nothing like the crappy cell carriers forcing you to pay for something you can't even use.

i would love to come over to verizon if sprint buys out tmo and tmo waives the ETF
i dont understand why the thunderbolt is getting so much more notice than the bionic... they're both set to release within a couple months of each other, but tbolt has piss poor specs, 1300mahz battery? really?
what's so bad about motorola that folks rather get a phone that's outdated spec wise?

HTC is know for their generally hackable devices...Motorola has been heading in the opposite direction, and it is very possible that even though the Xoom was unlocked they may decide to lock the Bionic.
I am seriously considering a Xoom...but I am waiting and if someone can root and flash the Bionic then I will possibily get one, but unless this tech material fiasco taking place gets worse I expect something better to be releasing about the same time as the Bionic.
Something yet unannounced maybe who knows, but it would have to outspec the Bionic... > and the way this game is played, there is always something just a little better just around the corner.

Does anyone here have or know someone who has the Thunderbolt? If so, what does the contract say about Verizon being able to to adjust your monthly rate? Or is it locked in?
Thanks
I traded in my Atrix for the thunderbolt.
I am on a family plan and the cost of the plan is the same as it was for my Dinc.
Unlimited data (soft capped still) and no special fees for 4g.
My other line has an upgrade in april i am saving for the Bionic. It will be locked down like the atrix - but the atrix is by far still the best phone i have ever used - just at&t network is atrocioius!
yes... well it took a little extra effort to unlock the tbolt... just as with the droidX I would guess the bionic will also get unlocked and rooted.. as for the OP I have not seen anything on the 4g modem for the bionic but I owned the tbolt and it does all the switching for you... infact that may have been the problem with the battery life...
I think there is at least two apps that allow you to manually turn on/off the lte modem though.

i'm sure this has been answered already in this thread but whats so bad about moto is the locked bootloaders. While that may be a non issue for the masses its a huge issue on XDA. let's not forget the masses take their queue from us!

Note on CDMA?

Just curious, does anyone else think a cmda version of the note will come? I've seen rumors of the galaxy journal, but nothing set in stone, just trying to gather some opinions
Sent from my ICS Droid 3!
That was a joke, right? CDMA is sooooo 20th century!
Seriously, in Oz it used to be the canines testicles. With a crap CDMA phone I managed to get a signal from 45 kms away, and that can save your life in the outback. The signal goes in and out, as you'd expect from longwave radio, but it was at least there. Nobody else had had anything for 30 kms or more.
I now have a sat phone as a life-saver, and that is better than CDMA any day.
Looks like Samsung is pushing the note now, what with the Super Bowl commercial, so it'll be a good chance it'll come to Sprint and Verizon. I'll stick with my GSM version.

That's a really good point. I'm hoping they'll release a cdma one. I have Verizon and sadly wouldn't be able to switch to at&t cause of my unlimited data.
Would love to be able to join the rest of you with the monstrously awesome phone!

Actually there is such a device. It's customized for China Telecom, and very strange I cannot find any specs on samsung site, only some news press articles.
Here in China the device is available right now and I'm going to get one

Disappointed it is not on VZW

I know VZW sucks when it comes to updates and everything. But I was hoping the nexus 4 would have 4G LTE...now that I have had LTE i can't go back.
I could see it "maybe" coming to vzw and other carriers like that down the road. Google playing it smart to roll unlocked first then go from there. In all aspects GSM is cheaper in many ways.
#Galaxy Nexus HSPA+
Google's relationship with Verizon has been strained to say the least. I doubt you'll ever see the two working together in the life time of the Nexus 4.
Honestly I'd be surprised if Google even bothered to support US CDMA carriers at all.

Same, left Verizon after the OG Droid to T-Mobile for all the nexus phones following it. So glad I did. Costs me less than 1/2 the cost I was paying at verizon monthly as well
Yeah what about sprint too. But sprint lte is taking forever it is a mile away from me and the speeds are not even that great. Don't think its fully launched but knowing sprint for 11 years speed has never been there thing. Switching to T-Mobile soon

[Q] Using Moto Maxx (the global version) in the USA

Hello,
I live in Brazil and purchased the Moto Maxx (the global version of the Droid Turbo) yesterday - awesome phone, I got the 64GB ballistic nylon one (only one released so far).
I´ll be going to the USA in january, and I´ll be staying there for 6 weeks, travelling a lot in this period, so I was thinking of getting a prepaid plan with at least 1GB of data. From what I read, the Verizon version would not work here, because in Brazil the whole country uses GSM. I´d like to know in which carrier I should get this prepaid plan. According to the brazilian motorola site, the network specs are as follows:
Networks:
4G / LTE (Cat 4)
UMTS / HSPA+
GSM / EDGE
Bands:
LTE Cat 4 (Bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 17)
UMTS / HSPA+ (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Thanks in advance!
That probably can run any network in US I think....you got band 4 and 17 which will work for at&t and T-mobile
4G LTE shouldn't be a problem
Go with straight talk. Easy peasy and no carrier BS. Also, buy me another Moto Maxx and I'll pay you $75 USD over your cost. PM for details. Seriously. =)
Those freqs are perfect for AT&T or straight talk, completely covered across the board. I was thinking of importing one myself.

That would be around $1000 USD, prices in Brazil are really high compared to other markets, I guess the best is to wait for the mexican version that costs the same as Verizon.

Just next week is the release here in Mexico, so I guess many people would be selling this also in eBay.
:fingers-crossed:
Yes, I was going to wait for the Mexican release. I was thinking of going south and getting some sun anyways so it wouldn't be a problem just to hop across and pick one up. I like Mexico so it would be win win for me.
Depending on where you are in the US, Cricket is now owned by AT&T and is using their network (including 4G LTE). They're also a pre-paid carrier and have a few tiers that offer different amounts of data (1GB for $40, 3GB for $50, or 6GB for $60). Technically the data is unlimited, but after you hit the cap it's throttled to 2G speeds. Straight Talk does the same thing, but they only offer 2.5GB for $45 last I checked. So you have a couple options.

Just so you know: the moto maxx does not come with the some of the droid features, like the command center or droid zap. Not that I miss those things.
Does this phone support the Moto Suite/Moto Voice like on the 2014 MotoX and Droid Turbo?

Yes, it does.
This would be an ideal phone for me, but I worry than there would be no warranty. Also, how fast will it get Android Updates?

Motorola is a company that works fast on updates, they already have the Lollipop for Moto X and Moto G, so probably the Turbo/Maxx also have the update already done, just waiting for the global release.
The warranty is something that you should ask, I mean, there are a lot of companies that now do their products as global warranty, meaning that it doesn't matter when you buy the device or where you are, you can always take it to their offices for any issue and they should resolve it; but again, is better to ask first.
I just put it on my credit card which will places a one year warranty on it no matter what the manufacturer might be.
Moto Maxx root?
Is rooting the Moto Maxx going to be the same exact situation for Droid Turbo since its the same phone? Or are the Moto Maxx's unlocked and easy to root and whatnot? This is the only reason I would get a Moto Maxx. Im thinking of purchasing one alongside a Nexus 6 to compare all 3 and develop some apps Ive been trying to get up and running for months.
Thanks a lot for all the replies. think I´ll be going with straight talk.
I´ve been running the moto max for 5 days now, I´ll be glad to answer any questions I can about this phone.

So when is the Moto Maxx out in Mexico? Anyone know any exporters or companies that would send from Brazil/Mexico to the Netherlands...
