[HOWTO] Droid 4 on GSM / UMTS - Motorola Droid 4

The Droid 4, if running ICS or Jelly Bean, works fine on GSM/UMTS networks outside the USA. I have working voice, GPRS (2G), EDGE (2.5G), UMTS (3G), and HSPA (3.5G). 4G/LTE is unlikely to work at it appears this phone only supports 700MHz LTE wheras most countries are using higher frequencies.
This phone will not work on any GSM carriers in the USA, such as T-Mobile USA or AT&T. Verizon appear to have specifically blocked these carriers in the radio firmware. They only allow you to use your phone on GSM outside the USA. There is no unlock code to get around this. If you want to use this on a US GSM carrier then subscribe to this thread for the latest on efforts to unlock this. There are also reports of failures on B-Mobile in Japan. Post #3 contains a list of known working vs not-working carriers. Please update this thread, or PM me, with any results and I will keep it updated.
Back in 2012 the phone cost me £328 from a company called Devices Now, plus £35 in customs fees, bringing the total to £363, which really isn't bad compared to the prices that contract-free phones cost in the UK. It took just under a week to arrive, of which 4 days was stuck in UK customs!
Update: They're now selling it used for $99, which is probably about £60!
Devices Now offer this phone pre-flashed to ICS so you get GSM support out of the box! Some other suppliers appear to still be shipping Gingerbread based phones which will need to be upgraded as described a bit further down in this post.
Instructions for phones currently running ICS or JB
If you do not currently have a MicroSIM, get a stanley knife or sciscors and cut your SIM to size.
Insert your MicroSIM and Power the phone on.
Go through the Verizon activation process, which will fail.
Go to Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode.
Set mode to GSM/UMTS.
Go to Access Point Names and set up the APN for your carrier.
Congratulations your phone should now be working on GSM and you can stop reading at this point if you wish.
Upgrading or reinstalling ICS or JB (Required to support GSM) - also read this if you have bricked your phone!
>>> DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DOWNGRADE YOUR PHONE WITH THIS METHOD, UPGRADE OR SAME VERSION ONLY - BRICK RISK! <<<
Prerequisites: Windows PC, USB cable, at least 50% charge in the battery as the battery will not charge during this process!
If your phone is currently bricked to the point that it will not charge, you will need to flash using a factory cable. These can be bought on eBay etc. or you can make one. Read all about the factory cable here.
Download the fastboot files for the version of the OS you want. 4.0.4 = ICS, 4.1.2 = JB.
Download and install RSDLite 6.1.6.
Download and install the Motorola USB Drivers.
Power off your phone.
Hold the volume up, volume down, and power buttons at the same time until you see the bootloader menu.
Use the volume down button to navigate to "Recovery" then use the volume up button to select it.
When you see the android/triangle, press both volume buttons together.
Select "wipe data/factory reset" and on the next screen select "Yes -- delete all user data".
Once it's finished, select "reboot system now" then immediately press both volume buttons until you see the bootloader menu.
Connect your phone to your PC via USB.
Use the volume down button to navigate to "AP Fastboot" then use the volume up button to select it.
Open RSDLite, press the "..." button at the top, and select the fastboot image .zip file.
Select "Decompress And Start Flashing" and wait for the process to finish (it will take around 20-30 minutes).
Once the process is complete, reboot.
Go through the Verizon activation process which will fail.
Go to Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode..
Set mode to GSM/UMTS.
Go to Access Point Names and add the APN for your carrier
Upgrading to Jelly Bean from ICS using the OTA update
Prerequisites: Windows PC, USB cable, unmodified ICS installed.
Download the OTA here and save it to the root of your SD card
Power off your phone.
Hold the volume up, volume down, and power buttons at the same time until you see the bootloader menu.
Use the volume down button to navigate to "Recovery" then use the volume up button to select it.
When you see the android/triangle, press both volume buttons together.
Using the volume keys, navigate to "Apply update from external storage" and select it with the power button.
Select the OTA you downloaded at step 1 and press the power button.
After flashing, select "Reboot system now".
If the update failed, then use the fastboot method above instead.
Rooting and further modification
The first thing to do is go to Settings -> Developer Options -> Enable USB Debugging, then obtain root using Droid 4 Utility for ICS or the Razr Blade exploit for JB.
I strongly suggest installing Safestrap and dual-booting a custom ROM, even if it is just a debloated stock ROM, then removing the Verizon CDMA-related APK files as this fixes several annoyances with the phone such as the "This SIM is from an unknown source" message at every boot. You do not want to mess too much with the stock ROM as at best it will hamper your ability to get further updates at worst you could brick your phone.
Adding other languages to the stock ROM (or a stock-based ROM)
See this thread, or alternatively install Mentor's ROM for a stock-based ROM with all languages enabled.
Note that non-stock ROMs are typically based on CyanogenMod and will come with all languages already.
Installing a custom ROM.
At the time of writing there are several ICS and Jelly Bean based ROMs available. Unlike other phones these are loaded using Safestrap which interrupts the boot process shortly after the stock ROM's kernel is loaded and allows you to dual or multi-boot your phone.
Hashcode maintains ports of both AOKP and CyanogenMod 10, both of which use the same low level framework and come out of the box configured for CDMA use. Pick whichever of these ROMs you like best. Personally I'm an AOKP fangirl :3
Note that at the time of writing Hashcode's ROMs currently do not support HDMI, webtop or camera flash.
For all ROMs, use this GSM patch, unless the ROM specifies that it is a GSM ROM already.
Olegfusion has made a modified version of the stock ICS ROM. It is pre-configured for GSM use, including all the APNs, adds Russian language, and has most if not all of the bloatware removed.
MyFishBear has released a debloated stock ICS ROM. It is CDMA by default but there is an optional GSM patch by Olegfusion. It works fine, but you will need to manually remove the 5 VZW APKs.
Shameless plug, but I've made a debloated GSM-oriented version of the stock JB ROM.
There are lots of other ROMs available in the developer's forum. This list is almost certainly out of date as it's not feasible for me to keep this list up to date, I have only linked to ROMs I have personally tried. Note that stock-based ICS ROMs will not work if you have upgraded to JB. Kexec ROMs will work regardless of what your stock ROM is.
Prerequisites: Running ICS or JB.
Obtain root as described above.
Install Safestrap.
Download your chosen ROM and any patches necessary.
Download GApps 2012-04-29 for ICS roms and GApps 2012-07-29 for JB 4.1.
Place both on your SD card. Internal or external should work, though I have only tested external.
Run the Safestrap app and have it install it's bootloader.
Reboot, press Menu when prompted to enter Safestrap.
Select ROM Slot 1
Choose Install
Select your ROM, GApps and any other patches (GSM patch, cdrom patch etc.)
Wipe data and cache and reboot.
If you are using CDMA or the GSM patch above, stop here. For manually setting up GSM support in non-stock ROMs, read on:
Go through the Verizon activation process, which will hang for 5 minutes then fail.
Go through the rest of the usual setup process. You will need to connect to a wireless network.
Install Build.prop editor.
Use Build.prop editor to change the following and reboot:
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0
persist.ril.modem.mode =2
ro.telephony.default_network=3
ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1
persist.radio.vzw.cdma.mdn=deleted
ro.telephony.gsm-routes-us-smsc = 0
persist.radio.ap.phonetype=1
ro.mot.phonemode.vzw4gphone=0
You should now be able to access Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> More -> Mobile networks and set up the appropriate APNs for your carrier, if the phone does not already have them.
Fixing the "This SIM is from an unknown source" error in stock-based ROMs
If you're never intending to use the phone on Verizon, you can get rid of this error by opening terminal emulator and running:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
cd /system/app
mv VzwPhoneService.apk VzwPhoneService.bak
You may as well do the same with VzwController.apk VzwDeviceSetup.apk and vzwapnpermission.apk, but leave VzwEntitlementService.apk as it's needed for mobile hotspot to work.

Skylarmb for Droid4 utility.
Hashcode for Safestrap and for porting AOKP and CyanogenMod.
Olegfusion for his ROM, the cdrom patch and a lot of the info about GSM support and removing Verizon crud.
MyFishBear for the 217-based ROM and for hosting the JB OTA.
SGMD1 for the ICS flashing instructions.
Mentor.37 for the GSM patch, the build.prop settings and his multi-language ROM.
All I have really done is gathered the information and software produced by these people and put it in one place. Go and donate to them if you are currently enjoying using this phone in a GSM country.

Almost the same story here in Russia, I got Droid 4 (about $580).
All steps which you described totally correct, but I was flashing 208 leak before, and then move to 213. (separate story and a little bit harder than just update from sd card)

It should work for any GSM/3G country. I only made the thread because of how scattered the documentation is, and certain key information (such as the location of those Motorola USB drivers) is missing from some of the threads. Therefore I figured I'd document everything about the process to save others the hassle.
Moving to another build I'm sure will be more complicated, and one I figure that out, I'll do something similar in this thread, if nobody else does so first!
But first I need to figure out how to get rid of the spyware and Verizon bloat

I have working voice, GPRS and HSDPA (3.5G). I have not been able to test EDGE (2.5G) or UTMS (3G) but I see no reason why they won't work.
Prerequisites: Windows PC, USB Cable, SD Card, Wireless network
Install Motorola USB drivers from http://www.theandroidsoul.com/motorola-droid-4-utility-tool-install-root-safestrap-recovery-etc/ Do not download droid 4 utility from here!
Download and unzip Droid 4 Utility from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522911
Boot up your new phone. Skip the Verizon activation process by tapping in all 4 corners of the app (not whole screen, just the main black area), one after the other in a clockwise direction, starting from the top left. Keep going until the app force closes.
You will get a whole bunch of nag screens, about backups and stuff, cancel them all. One of them will hang trying to connect to a server so hit the back button to get rid of it.
Enable USB debugging: Apps -> Settings -> Applications -> Application development
Plug the phone into your PC and use Droid 4 utility to root it (option 3)
Install OTA Rootkeeper from the market (over wireless) and start it
Choose Protect Root, Temp Unroot, Root
Download the latest ICS leak from: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-4-roms/209130-how-install-leaked-android-4-0-4-ics-build-droi...
extract the zip to get another zip and put that on the root of your SD Card. At the time of writing this will be called: Blur_Version.6.13.219.XT894.Verizon.en.US.zip. Copy this to your SD card and insert the SD card into your phone.
Power down phone
Hold both volume buttons, press power
Press vol down then vol up to select recovery
When the ! triangle appears, press both volume buttons
Press vol down then power to select apply update from sdcard
Select the zip file you extracted and copied over in step 10. It will take a long time to flash
Select "reboot" using the power button. First boot will take a long time.
Go through the google setup process if necessary
Run OTA Rootkeeper, and restore root
Power down the phone
Insert your MicroSIM and power up the phone. If you do not currently have a MicroSIM, get a stanley knife and fix this.
Settings -> Wireless and Networks -> More -> Network Mode: Set mode to GSM/UMTS

Quick unrelated question. I am travelling to London in October for a week. Which network do you recommend for prepaid? Was thinking of giffgaff.

Giffgaff only do SIMs in the post and they are sometimes quite slow to arrive. It will be ok if you know in advance where you are staying (e.g. with friends of family)
It's also worth noting the reward scheme they do where if another member provides a SIM then both you and the new member get £5 credit. It makes a lot of people on the Giffgaff forum very keen to praise the network and help you get a SIM. I had one guy who has a stockpile of them offer to send me one in first class post when I posted complaining about delivery times.
I mention this because if you post up where you are staying, and ask if anyone is nearby who could pop a SIM around, you might get a few bites.
As for other pre-pay carriers, no idea sorry, I've always gone with contract until now. The big 3 networks (O2, Vodafone and Everything Everywhere*) all have high street shops where you can probably buy a SIM**. There are other networks you can try too. 3 are the independent one, but they're a bit crappy (almost certainly fine in London though) and any other mobile network you find will be piggybacking on one of the big 3 e.g. Giffgaff are really O2.
I'd probably go with one of the O2 based networks myself, but London will be well covered by all of them, so go with the cheapest!
*Created after the merger of T-Mobile and Orange.
**I really have no idea if this is possible, probably best to check in advance.

Yes, you can buy SIMs in the store without issue. I bought Talkmobile ones from CarfoneWarehouse, which were the cheapest at the time (for calls to the US). At Heathrow, you can also buy SIMs from vending machines.

Hey guys you might wanted to check out the link in my signature. It's the original tool with some additions to jump from one leak to another, root ics and some other goodies.

On both the ICS leak AOKP and CM9 builds (tried 20120709 and 200120713), I get com.android.phone force closing if I try to make a call after setting that build.prop setting, and without that setting I don't get data. Earlier this morning I just got a call with no audio in either direction.
This is weird as it was working fine yesterday. Stock ROM also works fine.

Thanks for the guide Lum_UK I think this has persuaded me to switch up my Milestone 2 for a Droid 4. I'm UK based so it's nice to hear it'll work fine.
One question: Can you recommend a supplier if possible? I can see someone on ebay but obviously it would be nicer to buy from a tried and tested source.

So now we can use GSM on droid 4 by only upgrading to an ICS leak ? I've found on internet (i think it was on droidforums) that we have to change radiocom, but apparently you don't ... ?

VZW -> T-Mobile ?

Like most Droid 3 owners I'm sure, I'm tired of paying ~$105 a month for cellphone service through Verizon that I could be paying ~$70 a month for through T-Mobile.
I've read the other thread here associated with unlocking the GSM portion of the Droid 3, but a lot of it seems to be shrouded in maybes and varied successes with a limited pool of test devices to draw on.
From what I gather thus far, the following is true:
- You can unlock the GSM capability of the Droid 3
- You can operate it on T-Mobile
- If you do, you will only get "Edge" connection speeds - No T-Mobile HSPA+ or 3G speeds. "Edge" only, at 512 kb or something like that.
Can anyone confirm this? Is there a way to get a Droid 3 to operate on T-Mobile's network at full speed?
Is there a more reliable and easier to use method to convert a stock VZW Droid 3 to something operable on T-Mobile?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can accurately answer these questions.
The only thing I've seen that works is using the xt883 Chinese ROM and it only gets edge. Edge is fine for me, but I want a better ROM with access to Android market.
Im still learning how this device works; I just installed Safestrap and tried to flash the GSM CM7 ROM today, to no avail. I flashed a custom ROM on my Droid 2 last year, but it's been a while on the G2x which isn't as locked down.
I flashed the CM7 GSM ROM on the safe mode partition, thinking that was how to do it, but I got an error trying to back anything up because /system wouldn't back up. Then when I flashed the ROM it wouldn't boot. Im wondering if I was supposed to flash the ordinary CDMA CM7 first, then use the GSM one, since it's named 3gedit.zip. I haven't tried that yet though, and the fact that /system isn't backing up worries me. I didn't create a partition on internal with Safestrap, but I flashed the GSM CM7 ROM from coreless in safe mode and it wouldn't boot. Got back to non-safe mode and my stock ROM was fine, but I still want to see a good back up :-/
Any ideas from more experienced users would be great. I'm pretty much a blind guinea pig right now lol. I just really want to see CM7 on this D3, and have it work on T-Mobile so I can retire my G2x for a little while.
Thanks in advance

note: This is not tied to any specific rom, it is not using the chinese rom it is simply taking the radio off the chinese rom which is all we need. It hasn't changed anything to me in user space that I have noticed.
I would recommend unlocking, rooting, flashing the radio, and editing the build.prop.
1. Unlock or online sim card unlock code seller but less reliable.
a) Meet the following requirements:
* Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
* The phone being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
* The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
* The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
* Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
b) If you don't meet one or more of the above requirements, call anyway. You may still get lucky.
Call 1-800-711-8300 (Verizon Global Support) and ask the representative for a SIM unlock. Occasionally a representative may not know exactly what you are referring to; make sure you are not transferred to a different department. You are in the right place. Explain that they should have a walkthrough on how to do this, and that it allows for the use of local, non-Verizon SIM cards while traveling abroad.
c) Insert a foreign SIM into the SIM card slot on the side of your phone and then enter unlock code.

All you have to do is flash the radio.img from SOLANA_SLNCT-57.1.60_Fastboot in fastboot mode
Code:
moto-fastboot flash radio radio.img
then add the following lines to the build.prop
Code:
persist.ril.rssi.enable.param6 = 1
persist.ril.baudrate=230400
I can confirm this works with an AT&T sim in an unlocked phone, tested with stock and liberty 2.0.

Thanks for replying. That's where I wound up going on my own because I was trying to use his CM7 last night. Can't seem to get it to flash though. Backing up with Safestrap isn't working either...getting an error because /system won't backup for some reason.
I think I'm gonna flash everything back to stock, uninstall Safestrap, and try the above from the beginning. I'd like to see if I can at least get edge and below on T-Mobile using a US ROM.
Thanks again!

So, I have a couple of lines on VZW, but they are all used by family members on my account, and I don't have a VZW SIM. The guy who sold me the phone said he already unlocked it, and I believe him, but is the SIM an issue and is there any way to know if the phone is still unlocked? Can an unlock be undone after wiping internal sd?
I'm asking because I think I can just not worry about that step, but I want to double check. I put it back to stock 2.3.4, now showing 5.6.890 xt862 instead of whatever the xt883 was. I did this to get rid of the previous owner's Google account. Edge, calling and text were working on T-Mo when I bought the D3 a few days ago. When I put my SIM in now, however, and change it to GSM/UMTS mode, there are no operators available when I tap on the list and of course it doesn't work yet. I understand this is due to putting it back on stock lol, but I'm gonna go ahead and try flashing the radio and seeing what happens.
It's already rooted using zergrush. Has safestrap and I can boot into it by rebooting/pressing menu, but my /system folder won't back up. That's the only sign that something is wrong other than the fact that no ROMs will flash in safe mode. I've already left comments on Hash's site, so I'm waiting over there too. Figured I'd pop in here again real quick
Thanks.
UPDATE (from the other forum):
My Droid 3 is working on T-Mobile for voice and text. This is exactly what I wanted. Got some great in-depth help on this one, especially from @tspx23. Thanks a ton! This will be my daily driver now until we switch to VZW, at which point this will turn into a back up, unless I fail to find something else worth a contract at that point lol.
I might write a guide later on if anyone wants it. The process is easier than it seems, as long as you have it in plain english lol.
Thanks to anyone who contributed to this!
Is it possible to mix this with a current rom instead of flashing a random Chinese one, like infuse with cm7 or liberty?
Tmo has horrible coverage and awful customer service. Cs is all nice to you but lies about everything constantly. They did nothing but screw me. That's the whole reason I'm on verizon now. At least now I have coverage and won't be lied to whether or not I have it, or be told to get wifi and then u can make calls since u don't have service.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
I don't know of anyway besides a sim card to check if its unlocked and I am not sure a verizon one would ask for the sim unlock code even if it was locked but sim cards can be really cheap. If your phone was unlocked that will never be undone, if it was working on tmobile before you reverted to stock then it is unlocked, it would not have worked using tmobile otherwise.
are you using the latest version of safestrap, he released a bugfix version pretty recently? Could you be more descriptive of what you did while in safestrap?
It is not rom specific as far as I know, I am just using the stock one.
@Darksurf, I agree. I never had them but before I moved they didn't cover my old town. Verizon may be expensive but at least they tell you they will rape you at front and explain all charges.

you can also try with at&t in full3g. As they have the same bands the d3 has

Radio and build prop edit
I'm staying on T-Mo till they go under. They are cheap and I have unlimited Edge, which is all I can get on this phone anyway lol. Only ten bucks a month for data, since I have an older package from before they tried to hike their rates.
My D3 is having some issues after I reboot, and sometimes just randomly, it will lose all signal and tell me that my preferred operator cannot be found or error connecting. I have been just rebooting and sometimes wiggling my SIM around to see if it fixes, and it does.
Only other thing that is a little weird is my phone thinks it's an xt883, even though I'm on the stock VZW ROM. I'm wondering if this is causing some issues that I'm not qualified to really diagnose lol. Usually after I reboot, I have some of my google apps' names in Chinese, but I'm not sure if that is from radio.img, new build.prop, or from changing my bloatware to .bak.
Also, be advised that if you remove bloat, conversations.apk breaks incoming text if it isn't seen by the system. I added .bak to the end of it and could send texts to my wife, but couldn't get any messages. I changed it back and texting works fine. I use Chomp SMS, but that didn't seem to matter.
Have fun
P/S: also, when choosing operators in settings, you have the option for T-Mobile 2G, AT&T 2G or 3G. Just to confirm ;-) probably because AT&T's 3G bands are the international standard, right?
when you flashed the stock rom back onto it did you delete the /system partition and do a factory reset on your device before you did it?

I'd love to see someone put these mods into a ROM, but I'm not sure if any of it is compatible with existing ROMs. I also accomplished this on stock. When I get around to flashing CM7 again (or trying to at least lol), I'll post about how it goes.
I'm thinking that when I wiped my phone, the unlock remained but the radio.img that was on the Chinese ROM was undone or lost. Flashing it was easy though, using cmd mentioned earlier in this thread. I just needed help figuring out how to set it up, since I'm a noob at command line lol.
After that, I downloaded adb and tried to use other commands I've found (which claimed to work, but didn't for me somehow) to change out the build.prop. This failure was likely my fault lol but I found it easier to just use Root Browser lite to back up my original build.prop then replace it with the modified one.
I figure that if my SIM doesn't work after flashing some other ROM, I'll just try the two main steps again and see if it works then. If anyone really wants to do this, it isn't too hard or not worth it in my mind. I also figure this phone will be relevant enough for a while longer, considering I am cool with Edge speeds, I certainly won't mind being stuck with VZW's 3G whenever we change over. I am in no hurry to get LTE battery suck or bulkiness either. I'll wait for a little more refining to be done on that end before I upgrade from this phone
I am interested in making the phone compatible on T-Mobile / ATT by flashing XT883 radio. I have one question: Will the "unlocking" turn the phone completely GSM phone so it can no longer work on CDMA network?
Thanks.
Probably until you flash the Verizon ROM back I would assume.
Sent from my XT862 using XDA App
No. XT883 is also CDMA compatible, so the ability to use CDMA should stay. You might need to do *228 though.
You unlock the phone via carrier unlock code, e.g. they give you a code via email or over the phone allowing your gsm functions to work with foreign sim cards (other than the one they come with). After getting the unlock code and flashing the xt883 radio.img (and changing/replacing your build.prop) you can still choose to use cdma. Flashing this radio (which I'm currently using on T-Mobile) doesn't make your phone incompatible with cdma and is reversible. You would simply have to flash the original radio.img and change back your build.prop, or just flash a regular cdma ROM. I plan to do this some time next year if/when T-Mobile goes under and my wife and I switch to Verizon. In the mean time, I only get edge on T-Mobile (using it on AT&T will get 3g), but I have cheap and unlimited data (legacy data plan $10) and a great phone with keyboard. I'm using the stock ROM, rooted, but will eventually try CM7 with the gsm tweak. I will likely have to reflash the xt883 radio.img and change my build.prop (I think).

Potential Solution for Unlocking Bands on Droid 4 in US

Hi Everyone,
I'm not sure how to try this out, since I'm not in the US, and that RadioComm doesn't work for my Droid 4 (it's been upgraded to ICS)
1) Install latest Motorola drivers and RadioComm
2) Launch RadioComm
3) When it RadioComm launches, Click Main -> MA -> Common -> MDM 6x00
4) Click Settings -> USB -> PST USB
5) Click on FTM Common 1
6) Connect the phone to the PC and wait for it to go green
7) Under NVAccess, find the following values:
4870, NV_GSM_850_CARRIER_SUPPRESSION_I
4871, NV_GSM_DCS_CARRIER_SUPPRESSION_I
4872, NV_GSM_1900_CARRIER_SUPPRESSION_I
8) For each value, press Read, then replace all of the numbers with 0. Once done, press write. Repeat for all 3 values/
Let me know if this works!
Again, I mentioned a problem with RadioComm. I'm using Windows 8 x64, RadioComm worked fine with my Bionic on GB, maybe it's an ICS thing, maybe I need newer drivers, etc... Please let me know if this works!
I was able to get this going on my Droid Bionic (which also had a corrupted IMEI number) so if you want to see that post, view it here :

This looks awesome -- I saw your post in the Bionic forum. I was curious if this worked for anyone in the states on T-Mobile? I was looking to get a Droid 4 and use it on Straight Talk. Currently have an Epic, but loved my OG Droid. 3G is fine enough for me -- just curious if anyone is also able to get MMS working as well, along with APN settings?
What version of RadioComm do you recommend? I've tried 11.9.0 and I get the error when I try to open it:
"Error in getting the pointer to CommP2K and/or CommQC. Error number: Exception of type 'System.Exception' was thrown."
If you can help me get past this error, I'd love to try this out...

Awesome, I'll give it a shot when I get home. Out of curiosity -- I'm assuming this is similar to QPST. If I bork the modem, I should be able to go back to a prior group of settings, right?
SIM Card should be coming in on Saturday or Monday -- so should be able to get some news to everyone by then.

Shoot. I've read that you can get 3G on AT&T without any problems across forums -- did I misread and this was for international use -- not inside the US? I just want to get 3G on AT&T if possible...
Any thoughts? Or can you point me in the right direction?

Still trying to figure it out... I don't think we have a solution just yet.
I'm a developer outside of all of this (C# primarily these days, but have an extensive background in C/C++) -- and I've flashed phones to cricket with QPST -- so maybe I can help you guys out with this. If you're up for discussing any background that might catch me up to speed on this (already have my phone), would be up for trying to help break into it and enable this. Just send me a PM if you're up for this. Thank you!
Hey all,
I've only used this program for a little bit but I was able to change the values to what the OP suggested however, I used the Motorola Factory USB cable. I couldn't get the program to recognize my phone w/o it.
I'm using stock rooted ICS too.
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk 2
So, you updated it with that -- were you successful and does GSM now work in the US?
Did anything change?
Phone doesn't make calls now
I followed the steps above
Radio Comm v11.12.2
Motorola drivers 2.2.28
Whatever data card drivers came with radiocomm
This did not allow me to see t-mobile or at&t here in the states.
So, random question/thought... If we find another modem with similar chip in another phone -- say on AT&T -- would we be able to read some of these fields and stuff out -- and then push it into our modem?
it would be great if we can set the phone to just swap SIM cards very easily, especially in the US

Hmm, might be an idea. I don't think that there were many AT&T phones with this capability though. My idea is to compare an XT910 vs an XT912, since that was a worldwide release.
Best idea, get an XT910, put your SIM into it, grab a full radio dump, then put your SIM into the XT912 that doesn't work and grab another full radio dump and compare the two.
You'd need an internation XT910, since AT&T didn't ship them down there, but that would be a great starting place...

Only thing is that I'd have to go out of my way to do that and spend even more money. I just dropped some on the Droid 4 for an off-contract phone. I wonder if there's any way we could ping some of the other forums, i.e. the Razr and see if anyone can potentially get us full-reads, so that way we could compare/diff them?
In addition -- I wonder if it's possible (probably a long-shot) to potentially order a SIM card or something from another carrier in Europe or somewhere outside the US and get it into the phone, but then have it "added" or "roaming" on a US network or something -- if that might provide a workaround?
Just trying to take stabs at it. I figure I'll hold onto the D4 for another month and see if we have any exciting developments -- and if not -- just push it to Swappa.
So i could use this to unlock the radio for overseas teleco use?

Not sure what you a proposing in your second paragraph. I have a UK SIM card, and when I plug it in two other phones (Samsung Renown, a CMDA/GSM basic phone) and a Motorola quad-band GSM phone, it works fine in the US. When I move the SIM into my Droid 4, no signal, although it sometimes gives the Unrecognized SIM message. So it's not a matter of non-US sims.

I get the unrecognized SIM message also. That doesn't affect the phone one bit though, since I just press okay to the message and the phone connects to my carrier. Is your carrier one with a Verizon roaming agreement?

Workig Bionic on T-MO Running official ICS OTA update guide

Success!!!
This is a step by step that I used and it worked(Tmobile) for official release ICS:
01. Update to ICS
02. Power off phone and wipe data in Stock Recovery
03. Power on phone and edit the hex values with Radiocomm see: post 29/30 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297714&page=3
04. Power off phone
05. Remove sim card
06. Power phone back on
07. Connect to PC
08. Root
09. Delete STK.apk (edit: you no longer have to delete, just rename to stk.apk.bak)
10. Delete STK.odex (edit: you no longer have to delete, just rename to stk.odex.bak)
11. Modify Build.prop values as is:
ro.telephony.default_network=7
ro.mot.phonemode.vzw4gphone=0
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0
and add this to the bottom:
ro.telephony.ril.v3=signalstrength
12. Power off phone
13. Insert SIM
14. Power on!
15. Dial *#*#info#*#* switch to WCDMA Preferred
Should be good to go!
I'm sorry, but I need to ask a question that is probably frustratingly obvious,
When I go to use the RadioComm tool, the instructions says to put the phone in PC mode. I can't find PC mode on the phone, and whenever I try to use RadioComm, everything is red... the blood-red of failure...
How did you get around this? I've only had the phone for an afternoon (I'm enabling TMobile for a friend) so maybe I just don't know where the button for PC mode is!
Thanks for this. I was about to give up. I thought it was required to downgrade to the last GB rom (which is, apparently, impossible). I'm glad to give this a shot.

Haha... It turned out to be just as stupid an error as I thought it would be... I didn't have the correct drivers installed -.- . I installed MotoCast, rebooted, tried again, and it worked! Yay.
Thank you!
Also, more notes for people who are as moto-clueless as me:

Do you have it working on T-Mobile? I gave it back to him this morning, but I sent him idiot-quality instructions to replace the build.prop. He says it doesn't work. He's on prepaid, so he as decided to just switch to Verizon. (This is a great idea where we live, T-Mobile has 2G and Verizon has 4G...) I hope this is an isolated instance rather than a generic problem with T-Mobile on the Bionic.
If I'm walking with him past an ATT store, I'll see if they'll let me try a SIM, so see if it was just me or if it's locked (or something?)... Unfortunately, there aren't many ATT stores for hours of where we live

Yes I have it working on T-Mobile here's a screenshot. The reason 3g/hspa+(4g) doesn't work for T-Mo everywhere with the Bionic is because they are in the process of switching bands to the standard 1900mhz band in the US. ATT users get full use of their band and 3g/hspa+(4g)

Yes they have the same type of network but they work on different bands. ATT=1900mhz T-Mo=1700mhz(switching to 1900mhz by end of year) The reason SMS/MMS isnt working is because you need to modify the build.prop file in your root folder. Ive attached the 1 click root program for the Bionic, use this to root your phone. After you root your phone you will need to download some type of root explorer so that you can access the root folder. You no longer have to delete the STK files just rename them with .bak extensions. They are located in /system/app. Then access /system and switch to R/W mode. You have to edit build.prop with the values in the guide.

Thank you VERY much. But i've got some information and a question...
I was too excited to try what you said to do so i didn't go back and read the instructions on post #1.
My phone had the SIM already still in it.
WCDMA was selected
Hex was still set to AT&T/Tmobile.
Then...
-- I Root it.
-- I edit files as given above.
NOTHING CHANGED! CANT SEND SMS STILL!!!
-- Powercycle.
NOTHING CHANGED! CANT SEND SMS STILL!!!
-- Reboot, wipe cache, wipe data/factory reset.
turn phone on: FULL BARS! (had to wait 1-2 minutes. and input SIM password)
Had Voice, but the calls kept failing
--Input APN for ST(att)
SMS/MMS work!!
Voice works
DATA works! ( Shows Edge2 )
My question is, Booted up on: GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL)
GSM = -80dBm
Network: home. ( i have never heard of this.)
IMEI: unknown
my phone number shows on *#*#info, and under phone information -unlikebefore it did not. Yet my IMEI isn't showing... It did before.
The network i had before i made these changes phone displayed ATT as network, not it is 'home'
network type before was HSPA/HSPA+/Edge, not it is just EDGE2.
So i'm not on ATT like before, i am on GSM?
When I send SMS/MMS to my other phone it takes 20 seconds to 5 minutes to show up on her phone.
When I am sent SMS/MMS it takes just as much time to show up on mine.
after about 20 minutes of running the phone SMS send normal speed.
I never did do the "then access /system and switch to R/W mode." Because I don't know what you mean.
when i switch to WCDMA preferred, it took about 3 minutes to load up a signal, The network type is still 'home' before all this it used to be 'ATT'

T-Mobile is in the process of a complete "re-farm" mainly to make their network iphone compatiple. This means that everything on the network should be operating on the 1900mhz band by spring/summer 2013 which is when they are rumored to be getting the iphone. Regardless, if they still don't offer the iphone this refarm allows any unlocked iphone to be used on their network and get full HSPA+. You can bring an unlocked iphone into their store now and they'll put it on their network but if you don't live in an area where the re-farm is complete you'll only get EDGE access.
This update also applies to any other phone that operates on the 1900mhz band, not just the iCrap. T-Mo also just bought MetroPCS which, in itself, is not a huge deal as far as coverage goes BUT they also get all of Metro's spectrum (plus the spectrum they got from ATT and the failed merger) so they are actually lining themselves up to be the carrier with the most available spectrum as the FCC only has so much to auction off. I am seriously considering jumping ship for them even with my grandfathered unlimited data. They've got unlimited everything for cheaper but I have to see how service is.
I honestly was not aware the Bionic was HSPA+... probably just from not researching it as I have VZW anyway right now... My contract is up in March and even though I am grandfathered unlimited I might give them a shot. They actually charge less for "bring your own phone" and their deals are pretty good. Wife wants iphone and with the re-farm she could have one on T-Mo but her contract is not up till March 2014 so the ETF plus unlocked iphone... $1k... um no... Maybe when she sees how awesome ICS is vs GB she'll change her mind...

can I ask what you mean when you say you input sim password? Im trying to get it to work on t-mobile... Well I have 2 bionics, one is mine and I got t-mobile working fine using the radiocomm edit, removing the apk/ and odex file listed by DBoyFresh954 and doing the build prop edit listed by him in the same first post. but the 2nd bionic is my friends and I cant get t-mobile working on it. The only thing thats not the same on the two bionics is my friends is HW B 43/11 while mine is HW A 34/11. If anyone might have a fix or can explane the sim unlock that scarocean was talking about please do post or pm me would be most thankful
HELP!!
Okay, so I got my T-Mobile SIM card in today. Followed everything perfectly and still nothing. No service or anything. I double checked my area for coverage and confirmed that T-Mobile does have service here. I'm on stock 246. I rooted, applied the gsm unlock zip, re-named the stk files, edited the build.prop settings, and switched to WCDMA Preferred. I have the HW B version if that matters. I've been looking everywhere and can't seem to find an answer. Could somebody help please?!
Edit: My phone is now showing AT&T as the network. Also noticed that my Signal is reading -81 dBm and 16 asu. Isn't that a good signal?

I followed post #1 exactly and my Bionic works on T-Mobile.
What do you mean where you said "applied the gsm unlock zip" --- Either I missed this part or do not understand what you are referring to.
Running rooted Bionic on Synergy ROM on T-Mobile.
I do have a question though....
How to prevent phone from going back to LTE when rebooting. Not the worst thing but have to modify the radio each time phone is rebooted???
Also the ones who got it to work as well, are you getting 3G??? I feel as though I am not....
Thanks again to the person who started Post #1 --- Saved me $$ from buying a new phone from T-Mobile.

I flashed a zip that does what you did in Radiocomm. I finally got fed up with the problems and went to AT&T and got a SIM with prepaid. Works great! I just could never get the T-Mobile SIM card to work. Didn't go to waste though. Unlocked my wife's Torch and used it for that.
I have no idea how to make the settings stick for reboots. Odd, that your settings don't stay on WCDMA Preferred. Mine stays after reboot.
I think the Bionic can only get 2G until T-Mobile has finished their refarm. I think there's only a couple that have been set. Don't quote me on that though. Haven't really looked into it a whole lot.

Download ES File Explorer. Hit the menu button once you open it and go to settings. Scroll down to root settings and select all options. Go back to the main menu and hit the Up button at the very top. Scroll down and click on "System." Once in you'll see the "App" folder immediately. Click on that and scroll down to the STK apk's. Once your done renaming go back once and scroll down till you find the build.prop. Click it and use the ES note editor to edit the settings.
As far as adding the signal strength to the build.prop goes just scroll all the way down and add it there.

Unlocking Sprint G Flex to Cricket/AIO/ATT Wireless

This tutorial is my method for successfully unlocking the G flex to Cricket/AIO/ATT wireless with data/MMS, No battery drain, no Wifi calling drain.
1. Pros. Use Cricket/AIO/ATT sim.
2. Cons. Must dial International code +1 ( or whatever country code you're in) before every 10 digit number.
********Before we start you need to be on stock 4.4.2 sprint rom with Network Mode LTE/CDMA enabled************
(The roaming option does not appear when on GSM)
Next, change theme from "FLEX" to "LG". For some reason FLEX bugs out after the phone unlocks and causes crashes. (May be an isolated incident)
*Now we need to add the APN from AIO wireless into the Apn list by going into settings>roaming>Access point names
*The APN list will be blank and state "NO APNS" this is normal. Hit the menu button and add the AIO wireless APN settings from
http://buzzmobile.us/aio-wireless-apn-settings-internet-mms/
When completed you will need to press the back button and once again you will be greeted with a blank APN screen. Don't worry it's there.
Follow the instructions for root + unlocking the phone here. Total commander doesn't work on 4.4.2, don't use it, do it all with Root Browser (Get from Play Store).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50477852
After you are finished you should be rooted, successfully finished removing bloatware and left with a half unlocked phone.
Now navigate to settings/tethering and networks/mobile networks/Network Mode and change to GSM/WCDMA
**********************You are finished with this portion of the Tutorial***********************
*Fun Part*
1. Download Rom toolbox on your phone, the free/lite version is fine.
2. Navigate to build.prop editor
3. Find and change the settings listed..
ro.carrier=spr (spr to lowercase)
ro.build.target_operator=spr (spr to lowercase)
persist.service.crash.enable=1
Lets keep something in mind here... Once you change these settings you will need to restart your phone and you will be unlocked for Cricket/AIO/ATT networks, however, at this time you should know that if you venture back into network mode and happen to change your settings back to LTE/CDMA, you will lose the ability to change your network mode back to GSM UNLESS you revert the build.prop changes listed above. You can actively switch from LTE/CDMA and GSM by this method although I don't see why anyone would..
At this point you should have Talk/Text/Data/MMS...If not, you may have done something wrong.
**More funner part***
At this point in the tutorial your phone is doing two things.
1. It lies when it says its only on GSM/WCDMA
2. Rapidly draining the S#$% out of your battery.
We need the MSL Code so we may dial ##DATA# in your phone and access LTE settings.
Follow this Tutorial for retrieving your MSL code.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47324060
After you obtain the MSL pull up the phone application and dial ##DATA#(3282) Navigate into LTE and disable LTE/Band 26/Band 41
When you back out of the menu your phone will restart and stop continuously looking for LTE Radio.
**Final touches**
Remove all and I mean ALL sprint and preloaded wifi calling applications if you experience wifi calling battery draining. For some reason wifi calling spazzes out.
I'm not going to list the apk's because it may be an isolated incident and if you find out wifi calling is draining your battery just long press it in battery stats and go to "APP INFO" and find out what it is named and remove it with root browser...
I have been on Cricket/AIO wireless for two weeks now with HSPA+ and enjoying it.
This method may work with other carriers who knows.
**Food for thought**
1. When I change the ro.carrier settings from lowercase spr to ndo like in the APN i got a cool h+ instead of GSM.
2. I have not been able to wifi tether yet with cricket and I'm actively looking for a way now..
3. Think anyone else has issues with the FLEX theme crashing?
thanks.

If you don't mind how much do you pay? Will this work with a T-Mobile Flex? I'm pretty happy with T-Mobile since I got my discount back. I have 4 lines so it's around 25 bucks in savings a month.

It should work with t-mobile, i don't see why not, instead of ATT/AIO apn's just add a Tmobile apn and make sure that you have some time to play with the build.prop settings for example...
ro.carrier = spr can be changed to ndo and still work because "in theory" it matches the APN.
After adding the tmobile apn setting, changing ro.carrier to " t-mobile" to match the apn might work .
Try it out and see!
p.s i would leave ro.build.target_operator=spr alone, if all else fails you can change this too.
Thanks for the guide . I picked up a sprint g flex and lg g2 cheap, used your guide on both. Enjoying them on NET10 in the states.
patiently waiting for a custom recovery for kitkat on the flex.
interesting thread. i keep running into an issue though. as soon as i reboot after changing the stuff it reverts to where i was before and nothing saved. any suggestions? root is fine...
awesome stuff here i really want to see this happen on my flex!
Wont allow apn change
so i got stuck with a simple issue. when i go into the apn list there is an apn there already.
cinet.spcs
and when i press the menu key it is not showing the add feature to be able to add the new apn as described in the thread.
after doing these I noticed when opening Wifi it force closes and says "Unfortunantley, Settings has stopped"
only wifi that works is the one i used before doing these mods wont allow adding others
also have tried various wifi repair apps
working for me but getting tons of systemui crashes
Concerning the errors that appear often but I came out I did this : I returned and change in the build prop, spr for SPR capitalized and not returned to me the problem also remove the option to persist crash : 0 , take into GSM mode UMTS network selection mobile. I'm in version 4.4
Not working for me.
I tried this 3 times. Once with stock 4.4.2. Once downgraded to 4.2.2 and another time after updating back to 4.4.2 from OTA. All failed. Could not get any sim to be recognized. I am a smart guy and have done much more complicated methods of flashing, rooting, etc. for Android phones. But this just does not work. The phone states no SIM when I put my Cricket SIM in it. But when I put the Sprint SIM back, it reads it.
Any help would be GREATLY accepted. Thank you.
PS: I called Sprint because this is a clean phone. When I asked for the unlock code they gave me the MSL. I have a feeling that is incorrect but I could be wrong. After an hour on the phone, they said that is the unlock code. No matter how much I tried to tell them it's not.

Maybe this is a better guide for you:
http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-sim-unlock-sprint-lg-g2-ls980/
The Sim unlock does work, I've been using my sprint g flex on cricket for 6 months or so , but only with H+ .
You don't really need the msl or have the phone in good standing (blacklisted is OK).
If the Sim isn't being recognized that means you didn't do the folder replacement right. I had trouble at this part, which was solved by using the app "ROM toolbox". It took a few tries.
As far as changing the APN , just use any shortcut app on the playstore.
For switching bands, use the app " network" from the playstore. No msl needed.

Did you use the files from my link? Flex specific?
Don't use total commander.
What software version are you on?
Even after the FC, does it recognize your Sim?
You must also change the build prop, just realize the guide doesn't have that. Probably why your getting FCs.
Save a copy before making changes:
ro.carrier=spr
ro.build.target_operator=spr
persist.service.crash.enable=1

Sweet. Glad you got it.
The only trouble I have had with this method is if the phone shuts off or I restart, I have to switch the bands back to GSM.
would this work on LS995ZVB? thanks.

CDMA Workshop alternatives and can I get data on other carriers?

So, I've recently rooted and unlocked my device and I wanted to know if I can bring it to another carrier and still get data.? I'm using the LS991 Sprint version. I also wanted to know if there are any good CDMA Workshop alternatives; it's really expensive and I'm only gonna be using on a few devices.
Dfs
So you rooted (doesn't really matter with respect to carrier support) and you unlocked it (that's what matters with respect to carrier support) - so you put in a SIM card for the carrier you want, set the APN data (use Shortcut Master if needed, there's a version specifically modded for the LS991 directly available in my post HERE - might be a good idea to read that post as well since that's what I did myself.
Worse comes to worse if you have no luck because you unlocked your LS991, consider installing the global LS991 ROM (whether it's Lollipop ZV6 or Marshmallow ZV9 or ZVA - if you install ZVB you can never go back to anything prior so be aware of that) which will work much better for other carriers than using the unlock mod so many of us have done in the past.
Hindsight being what it is, if I knew about the global ROM when I got this G4 recently I wouldn't have mucked around with all the unlocking crap and the carrier partition at all for any reason because just installing the global ROM (or modifying build.prop to allow for global unlocked operation) is way more useful and less damaging to the phone. Modifying the build.prop isn't necessarily a cakewalk but, since someone else has already done it for others and posted the global ROM(s) for Lollipop and Marshmallow (as .img files you flash using the Send_Command.exe/dd method) it's really not a big thing anymore.
If you muck up flashing an .img file you can typically just use LGUP and a TOT file to get things working again so it's relatively safe overall, but if you muck up the unlock and trash the carrier partition content the phone will end up being pretty much useless unless you have that information safely backed up someplace (I'd say multiple backups in multiple locations, to be honest).
Anyway, if you truly want the phone to be capable of working on other carriers, my suggestion is go for the global ROM but that's just my own personal opinion on the matter. I'm using tabp0le's MellowMallow ZVB global ROM on my LS991 and T-Mobile LTE works just fine for me, for the record. It did take a little work - I wrote about how I got the full phone/data working in that post with Shortcut Master - but it does work.
Thanks for the help!
One last question, how did you get other carriers to let you activate the phone? Everytime I try they ask me imei then tell me my phone won't work on their network.
Well I've had service with T-Mobile in the past (not currently but will again soon), I have a bunch of T-Mobile microSIM cards because whenever they put the SIM card activation kits on sale for $.99 or sometimes even free (rare but it happens) I usually grab 3 at a time so I have 'em around for testing purposes. T-Mobile doesn't require me to provide any info to them, and even if I go to their website right now and input my IMEI number it'll say it's not recognized, etc but it's not relevant: it works, and that's what matters.
Most carriers don't actually require you to provide the IMEI for any reason as long as you can get one of their microSIM cards (or nanoSIM with adapter) and then get service without having to contact them. T-Mobile is somewhat unique in that process I suppose. With this SIM card I have (it's never been activated) I can go to their website and sign up for service right now and it'll be active in 10 minutes or less, sometimes when I've activated service (it's prepaid so I don't necessarily keep it month to month, sometimes I choose some other service for testing) it's done before I even sign out of their website, like 30 seconds or less and wham, the phone beeps telling me service is working.
So, the advice is: get a SIM card for the phone from the carrier you're interested in and go from there, not sure what else to suggest honestly.

glad it worked for you. MY experiences with ls991, i am using it nvmode. zv6 rooted works for me with cdma data. but data doesnt work with zv9 or zva. global rom doesnt work unless, I edit build.prop target carrier to SPR . it is open to use it as global mode. I am using it in cdma nv mode.. not with any sim..

Ruim is basically used when it comes to cdma sim card.
"Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) is a card developed for cdmaOne/CDMA2000 ("CDMA") handsets that extends the GSM SIM card to CDMA phones and networks. To work in CDMA networks, the R-UIM contains an early version of the CSIM application."
Your is at&t 4g gsm card. [emoji4]
Check your build.prop and search for
ro.build.target_operator: OPEN
Most probably for global mode open works
For making it work on cdma nv, i have set it to SPR
You can tweak with it by changing to options, it will also change signal bar and 4g symbol like at&t
These will show a Standered international 4G data icon for 3G/HSPA+ and LTE for LTE.
ro.build.target_county: CA
ro.build.target_operator: TLS
These will show a standered international 3G data Icon for 3G/HSPA+ and 4G for LTE (Messes up settings menu pretty bad)
ro.build.target_county: SK
ro.build.target_operator: SKT
If you want the AT&T 4G and 4G LTE Icons.
ro.build.target_county: US
ro.build.target_operator: ATT

My fav cdma tools are qpst, cdma workshop, dfs, revskill and bit advance is qxdm All are freely available. I cant say which one is best hahah. Trust me for me, all of them worked at some instance when i was stuck. Revskill is great with htc finding spc. Though i used dfs mostly.
