So my wife was home alone when her new Moto X arrived. She read somewhere on the AT&T site that she needed a number off the battery, so - being used to her old Galaxy SII - she proceeded to pry off the back case. Obviously it came off all at once and tore a good amount of stuff off with it, and now I'm home early from work looking at a bit of a mess.
I'm a layman, but I can see that the following components are damaged:
Volume rocker / power button ribbon torn at the power button side
Antennae torn off completely (ribbon cable intact), square grey segments left behind on the battery
Camera ribbon detached from circuit board but seems to be intact
Random black tape torn off
Needless to say, with a busted phone, void warranty, and wife in tears... I need some help from XDA. What are my options? Repair it myself? Take it to a shop? Call it a loss and buy a Nexus off-contract? We don't have any upgrades left and can't really afford to buy a new smartphone at full price.
I uploaded photos of the damage to imgur, but I guess I don't have enough posts to supply the link. I uploaded them as attachments, hope that works.
Was what she read from the site from a att employee?

No, she found a YouTube video for disassembling a Moto... G.
Something about knowing enough to be dangerous.
Anyway, I got on the phone with Motorola support and (shockingly?) they're replacing the phone at no cost. Even paying for return shipping. Go Motorola!
This thread can be locked now, sorry for the disturbance.
You're probably gonna have to pay for a repair. Warranty is more than likely void. They will obviously know the back was taken off.
Sorry!

How awesome of Motorola. ?
Tell her not to do it again....or I'm sure they're not helping again. Lol

I thought I seen something on the tv a few months ago that HTC wasn't going to update the desire 510 to their lollipop because they'd rather you spend the money to buy another more expensive phone if you want lollipop... @r3pwn is in the process of building cm12.1 that's basically lollipop but better!
12.1 is not near stable enough for daily use. Anyways, I guess I need to get some money together and put this phone up on eBay because this is ridiculous. HTC just lost a customer. I'm very upset that I gave up a Nexus 4 for this. Oh well. Live and learn. From now on, I'm only buying Nexus/Motorola smartphones.

Apparently that page is wrong since it's past April.
Perhaps all should better learn reading and understaning, before you are going to spam threads in a forum like this.
1 year = 4xQuarters
1 Quarter `= 12/4 = 3 months
So.. when the web site tells HTC is doing Lollipop Update in Q4 it meant to be from Oktober till Decembre

The navigation bar stopped recognizing my touches. I had to use Pie Controls. But not having the bottom little section of my phone was really annoying and instead of having the digitizer replaced, I opted to get this phone instead of keeping a 3 year old phone. Plus the removable battery and expandable memory caught my attention as 8gb was hard to work with, especially with apps being bigger and lollipop using up more space on the N4. Also the GPU was supposedly better. I should've gone with the 2nd gen moto e.
Bad move. I'm heavily considering selling this phone and buying a new digitizer and LCD for the Nexus 4.

You won't get much money for the phone. It's not worth anything really cause once we all figured out that this isn't what HTC claimed no one really wants it now.

I say it's fake, build quality looks ****ty and the info about phone looks fake also.
On the same page mentions the phone as being N910F and few lines more down shows N9100 which is the Note 4 DUOS.
Also the official Samsung charger and accessories are white.

Samsung doesn't include black earbuds and a black charger with the note 4 as much as I know, also the bezel looks thicker than the one on the original. It's a fake.

I just bought a "unlocked" note 8 and everything was clean when I checked it and everything works and is activated but when I was scrolling though the settings I saw under "knox" there's a Rent-a-center profile with the contact number and everything on it and had no idea why, So I've been doing research about what it means and a looking for a solution when I found out that the phone is though them and if it's not paid off they can remotely lock you out of it and I want to prevent that from happening because I paid alot of money for this phone! I had another note 8 before this one that i broke the screen on and it was locked to AT&T(which I don't have) so I got help on here with rooting it and putting new firmware on it which worked. So I don't know if doing that again will take care of the issue or what I should do? If anyone has any advice or knows what I should do please let me know!! Thank you!
If you own the phone, ie, paid for it all then I'd go back to where you got it from and tell them to take it off.
Contact seller and possibly even rent-a-center to check what status of phone is. If issues do exist, demand a refund of the seller.
Wow, was curious how much they charge.

I already did that and they said it wasn't paid off fully and to contact the person I bought it from which I've already tried but nothing.. That's why I'm looking for a solution now before I get locked out because they said it's only a matter of time before it happens when the store it was rented from shuts it off and then I'm screwed. I didn't even know you could RENT A PHONE !

For $174/month you can get the phone in device installments and service from any carrier for less.
".....I got help on here with rooting it and putting new firmware on it which worked. So I don't know if doing that again will take care of the issue or what I should do?"
No. Root isn't an option in this scenario nor is flashing new firmware.
It appears that Rent-A-Center utilizes a Mobile Device Management solution which, in turn, is dependent on KNOX.
With the current root option for the Snapdragon 835 & Note 8, we don't the ability to alter or remove the partition in question.
However
There are services available ONLINE which MIGHT help you; look for yourself.
Even if you were able to remove the lock, they could still blacklist the device for non-payment.
This puts you back at square one.
Talk to Rent-A-Center directly and explain the situation.

Guaranteed OP bought an under contract RAC phone. Phone is gonna get locked and op will be SOL.
Sounds to me like the person you bought it from pulled a fast one, phone is probably not even close to being paid off & he sold it.
Like AHE said, even if you were able to remove that RAC lock on it, they can still blacklist if that's the case (phone not being paid off).

Most of Rent-a-Center's clientele couldn't borrow a buck for a soda. They don't have the credit rating to get a phone at a more mainstream price.
And before anyone screams about RAC's "predatory" business model, consider that most of their customers got into the credit mess they're in by getting stuff they couldn't afford or thought they were too slick to not pay and get away with it. They're a match made in heaven.

You have good points. But rent a center places are straight up predatory business. If customers credit not able to get phone on payment plan. Then straight out deny them. For the better off of person.
I would feel like I had no soul working and selling to people at places like that. Double price stepping over the line. Tripled price jesus christ that's insane! Those type of places and others should be banned.

OP I feel really bad for getting shafted
I've figured out how to make it work if you're interested
If you were able to root it, install Titanium backup, there is a file that is installed by Rent a center. It cannot be unistalled..I tried to and it vanishes for a few minutes but is reinstalled. Even after device is paid off you have to call rent a center and get their loss prevention department and they will remotely remove it. Even when I rooted and installed a rom the file was there. Trust me on this, I was silly enough to get a device from them yrs ago and even after the 90 days same as cash it took them over a month to take the file off my phone.

If you're still within the one year warranty, complain to samaung through "Samsung +" app and don't mention anything about burn in. Just say my screen doesnt look right. If you're out of the warranty then you're SOL.

I had the same issue a month ago. Samsung won't replace it but they will change the screen. They did that for me, but the issue is coming back again. People need to reach out to Samsung and bring this issue to light. Too many units are doing this now but not enough people are speaking up.
Check out the Note 9 screen burn in thread and you'll see other users, including myself, who have pics posted of the same issue.
Sorry about your phone... Reach out to Samsung asap and make sure to send them picture evidence of your issue when you send in your phone. The more people to complain, the more likely Samsung will probably decide to replace these defective units.

Talk to a rep on the app. They're very good. I'd get a new one for a replacement from them. Make sure it's not a refurb. O doubt they'd give you a refund. Burn ins dont happen that soon. You literally need at least two years of the same screen layout and same things done everyday. I've been using oleds since Samsung released them on their first note and I've never had any burn in. And yours actually doesnt even look like a burn in to be honest. It looks a screen uniformity issue.

Your phone has a screen problem, not a burn in. Burn ins are shadows of things you have on your home screen, like your status bar and icons. This is nothing like that. This is an issue with your screen and they'll give you a replacement. Just make sure to present your proof of purchase such as your receipt and all that jazz and you'll be fine.

I agree that it is a screen uniformity issue or something odd. I have every note since the note 2 and never seen this and all of those were used a year and never had a problem. My nav bar isn't "burnt in" which is weird because it is always up and dark

It's basically going to be a new phone. They will keep the mother board and camera from the old phone and put it in a new body.
So new body and new battery.
At least that is how they handled every report of burn in on the Note 8.
If they send you to a UBreakIFix it is about a two hour turn around..
