Nice thanks, and a manual too..
So... do we not have to root for USB host capability anymore? Or did they just give us the drivers to tweak? (Srry, I'm new to Linux/Droid programming) -Ara

I could be completely wrong here, but aren't these the Nexus 7 specific drivers used by your PC for connecting to the tablet? This has nothing to do with the OTG capabilities.
Nah, you're right. Its a PC USB driver.
wow
the booklet is 100+ pages
giong to check it out
So what do we do with the download? Does it go on the PC or the Nexus 7?
What does this even do? Just a update or what?

That is true, but this one is a PDF, while the one in the play store is a google book (scanned). I think the readability of the PDF is better.

PC. This driver lets your PC recognize your N7 when you plug in the usb cable. Also should let you adb which would be helpful if you are trying to root.

Thanks for answering. I understood what it was for. But couldn't find an .exe file so was concerned in case it was to go on the Nexi to make it appear differently to the PC.
So do we install it through hardware devices under usb then?

Yes you would need to go through your device manager in windows while the N7 is plugged in, right click on the device and update driver. Click Have Disk and browse to the folder

Thanks for that, sorted it.
for me the driver updated the one under "android phone". My tablet is also listed under "portable media player".
Mine was browse-able when I plugged it in but I couldn't connect to it for rooting. Many people used Samsung drivers but it all seems to be about the same. This update wasn't needed but I did it anyway to have the official drivers. I've seen no change however.

I had "Android ADB Interface" appear under "Android Phone" but I have nothing listed as media player or tablet at all. It also doesn't show up under 'My Computer', is it meant to, I assumed it was?
I don't see what use this was now to be honest.
Try turning off debugging on N7, it should then show up as MTP in win exp.

I had the Android SDK installed previously to root a Kindle Fire so my results may be different because of that.
Which windows are you using?
On "my computer" I have three listings. First is hard drives, second row is removable storage (CD, usb etc..) now there is a third for "portable devices". That's where the Nexus is. If I click on it I see the SD card part of it (no root access). I could see in here just by plugging it in. It automatically downloaded and installed it's drivers.
Now in device manager I see
Android Phone > Android Composite ADB Interface
Portable Devices > Nexus 7
Do you have any unknown devices?

But if I go into shut a usb device before removing it from the PC on the task bar it shows up as Nexus 7 there. Weird.

Sorry, should have mentioned this. Yep. I have. I've not been able to see it in either environment (currently running win7 on the machine I'm typing on). The last time I was able to see it was on an XP machine. Never on Vista and now on this new 7 box. I have also factory reset this as well but still nothing.

Made me LOL...
Turned it off. Connected to PC. Selected mass storage, then the option to mount. Then got the USB device not recognized message again as well as the option to look at the USB device properties which indicated the unknown device and to "replace the device if windows is unable to recognize" it. I also opened kies express which I also downloaded to load the most current drivers (for US). Still nothing.
If the wifi didn't work on it, I'd probably take this thing skeet shooting and use it as a clay pigeon, I'm that frustrated...
Deinstall all program including drivers and kies. Reboot and in system/config look if their is all cleaned so no Usb installed
Now reinstall kies.
On your tab in system connect to kies on connect and not to Usb.
Now connect tab to windows and only when no connect is fossiele then install usbdrivers.

Ok...completely uninstalled everything and checked the registry for any instances of Samsung to make sure all drivers are removed. The only difference now is that I couldn't find the link to Kies Express, so I'm just going to install standard Kies. Crossing my fingers.
The tablet shows connected to Kies when that is opened but when I close that and try to connect as USB and mount. I get the same error message about USB device not recognized. I also try to update the driver in system properties but get the same error that the device driver is up to date "unknown device".
Windows 7 is automatic. On the dialer type *#7284# and set usb to pda.

I spent a couple of days trying to connect my Tab to a number of different OS's from XP up to Win7 on 3 different computers. Each time the dreaded message of "USB device not recognised" came up. The solution was so simple after all the frustration. Soon after purchasing the tablet, I bought a car charger which came with a connection cord. Looks the same as the original except without the the Samsung logo on the flat connector. As soon as I plugged in the original USB lead, voila! "Device is ready to use" message appeared.
Moral of the story. If you are having problems connecting your Tablet to a PC through USB..... make sure you are using the USB lead that came with the tablet.

When you plug into the PC, two extra notification icons should appear in the bottom status bar. If these do not appear then ignore the following, if they do appear then...
Pull the status bar up (with the round icon with the green up arrow or touch and drag up), then select the gray text that says "Select to copy files to/from your computer" You should see a little android guy with one button below him saying "click to turn on file transfer" or some such. Then it should show up as a drive on your PC.
there is no notification icons that appear in the status bar near clock and batt...
It says "No notifications" too in wifi bt crosshair volume bar...
I have the same problem with my nc not showing up...
Can not connect to PC with USB. Using SD to boot to the CM7.
Have not found anything regarding the USB mode.
Where is it?
on your OC... Nook NOT connected....
Go into device manager...
View... check "Show hidden devices"
Under Android Phone... delete "Android Composite ADB Interface"
Under Disk Drives.... delete any drives that are "B&N Ebook Disk USB Device"
Under Portable Devices... delete any drevices that are not currently connected
Under Universal Serial Bus controllers...
select each device that is not a "Universal Host Controller" or is not OBVIOUSLY not nook related (i.e. "Apple ...." or "Generic USB Hub" or "SAMSUNG..." etc...
Check the properties of the device... on the "Details" tab... select "Hardware Ids".... delete any that are "USB\VID_2080...."
Install the drivers then connect the Nook
I actually had this problem for quite a while. Check the microUSB connector on your cable, if it's even a little bit loose, you may need to replace it. Just call B&N up and ask for a replacement, they should give you a free one.

WalangA, are you still having problem or being solved? Let me know, I might able to help.
Also, pls tell us you're running CM7 from where? eMMC or uSD.
If you have home wifi, here's another option: go to the market and download WiFi File Transfer. Start Wifi File Transfer on your Nook and it will give you a number (something like 192.168.1.3:1234). Open a browser on your desktop and put whatever number shows on the NC into the location of your browser. You can then move files back and forth - no usb cable needed.

I am not sure when this started. I have used windows to install cymod several times but i went to download a update and install it and my computer will not recognize the touchpad. it says the device driver was not installed properly

it goes through the steps of looking for the device and then nothing.
i get a tone on the touchpad and then nothing on the computer
I do have the correct setting in the storage settings so i have no idea what to do

It sounds like driver problem to me. Search for HP touchpad driver and download and install the latest version you find, that should do it.. I'm assuming you have the MTP box checked in storage > settings > USB computer connection. Also, reboot both the tablet and the computer after installing the new driver.
Good luck.

on the android I have the MTp checked and have accessed it in the past but i upgraded to windows 8

Try using a different USB lead and plugging into different USB sockets on your PC sometimes I find my PC will recognize it with one socket but not another same thing occasionally happens with my USB sticks. Otherwise I would suggest trying a different PC if you still have a problem that would suggest a fault with the USB socket on your touchpad which I have had to have replaced once.
Fingers crossed that isn't your problem.

This will let TP be recognized on the PC
"If you want to transfer files back and forth from the CM9 touchpad you might have difficulty figuring out how exactly to do it.Here's how you pull it off:
First, tap on your app drawer in the top right of the screen (the little checkerboard). Now, select the "settings" icon.
Now tap on storage on the left-hand pane.
Finally, the tricky part - tap on the 3 squares at the VERY top right of your screen. It will bring down a little drop-down menu for USB computer connection. Tap it and put a checkmark in the "Media Device MTP" box.
Now you can plug your touchpad into the computer at will and transfer files back and forth from it. Easy as pie, I'm not sure why this isn't activated by default, but it's a simple fix if you know what to do."
Sorry I copied this from XDA a couple of weeks ago, so I can not take credit for this but it works great

Sounds like either windows is messed up or the USB connector of the Touchpad has gone .
same error on TP + his galaxy??
dam the luck..busted ports on both devices at the same time..
right after a fresh format of windows ; what a coinkadink
if on your very longest shot that win needs new drivers, the palm / novacom etc
process installs them and TP will get recognized and picked up..

Ok lets get a few things right
I do know how to root my device I did it a while ago and honestly haven't done it in a while so I am rusty
but that being said if you cant access the device at all even in usb mode then you cant root.
And yes now my galaxy s3 wont recognize either.
every time i try it tells me that there was a device error and windows doesn't recognize the device.
i formatted the cpu again and put windows 7 and no help
I have tried two diffrent touchpads one android and one web os
and my phone
to get things right you have to start at the beginning. Windows will not recognize TP w/o the drivers first. It's obvious you have been avoiding that step. you need to go back and do the whole nova com thing to install them before you attach TP to it.. look at the you tube videos. you will be finished in a few minutes. .
Hey all,
Is this possible with the Droid Turbo?
I'm used to plugging my phones in via USB, and having the file system mount as a mass storage device, allowing me to move files to and from my phone easily.
When I plug in the Droid Turbo, I have two choices, either MTP, which just brings up an installer of some sort, or camera mode, which only allows me access to pictures and videos.
Now granted, all of my past Android phones have been running third party images (mostly Cyanogenmod) and maybe this is the reason for the difference (though I thought I had file system access with stock image in the past, but maybe I am misremembering)
Any thoughts on anything I can do to get complete file system access?
Works for me. ES file manager does too.

I have file system access from the phone using ES no problem, and can mount usb storage using one of those adapters.
I'm talking about access to the phones file system from the computer using USB.
Worked perfectly on my old phone, doesn't with the Turbo.
OIC, not that I know of.
Sounds like it might be a driver issue. I plugged my phone into my computer (Windows 7) shortly after I got home with the turbo and moved a bunch of backed up files onto the turbo without any issues at all.

But I guess that would just make too much sense...

Same Problem Here...
I had the same issue when plugging my Droid Turbo into my Windows 7 machine. I'm afraid I don't have any advice for those of you on Linux, but if you have problems on windows where it's only showing you something about "Motorola Device Manager", here are the steps I took that fixed the problem for me:
On Windows 7 go to Start Menu > Devices and Printers. Under Devices you should see XT1254. Right click on this and select Troubleshoot. If the issue you are experiencing is like mine, then the problem was simply that the drivers didn't auto-install when the Droid was first connected to your PC and the troubleshooter should install them properly for you.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the cause is that Moto Device Manager software. When you first attach the phone via USB the computer treats it as an install disc rather than as a storage device. Perhaps those of you on linux might be having a similar issue, I hope this helps and I apologize if it doesn't.
My wife just purchased a Turbo. I can not get the storage to mount on Ubuntu. This is the only phone that I don't have access to the storage. I do have access to the PMP. I am also receiving an "no permissions" when using adb. I search for adb devices, and no permissions? I have developer options enabled, USB debugging checked. I just tried 2 other phones with adb, all functions?
To clear up some things:
Different OSes treat MTP differently. Windows gives access to the storage area, OS X requires Android File Transfer App, and GNU/Linux I have no idea.

mattlach: It makes perfect sense why they do not use USB Mass Storage. Mass storage requires exclusivity to the OS, and that means the phone cannot use it. Which means, the phone crashes because the OS resides on the NAND you would want to mount and read. MTP is the compromise. Phone in the past that had access as mass storage had SD cards as well, either internally or added on. For example, the old school Droid Incredible had both an internal sd card and an external slot.
Probably already answered but yes you can. Just gotto my computer as yyou'd lookfor a uUSB device. And sorry aboutmiss sspells. Swift key sucks so much...... Omfg.
Looks like they want us to use MTP or PTP. Mass storage is not an option. I found this from Verizon:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-117349/
"USB Mass Storage feature is currently not available, however, files can be transferred to/from a computer utilizing Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)"
Not to jack the thread, but when using Windows Explorer to access my turbo, almost all of the folders (music, pictures, dcim, etc.) show up as files. Anyone else have this issue?

Well, Windows 7 doesn't solve the problem. The main reason I didn't switch to an iPhone from Android was lack of access to the file system. There are other things on my phone I would like to transfer or backup to my PC besides the media that appears when connecting the device. I had no idea when I got this new Droid Turbo I would be pushed back into the stone age. No sd card, no removable battery and no access to the file system. Arrgh
And no manual sound off switch that can't be overridden by software.
Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but Google brought it up. haha
I was messing with this and I turned off the "Software Installation" option and all of the sudden drivers installed and everything seems to be working. I guess the software installer was overriding the normal driver installation or something.
Not sure it's a universal fix but maybe it'll help someone.

If it is, plug the phone into ur PC, then turn off USB debugging, and turn it back on. Your phone should prompt you to enable connection to the PC. Check the box to accept and you should b goof to go. (That's what worked for me)
did u install the right drivers? its kinda picky on windows 8

I had this and it drove me crazy. My laptop was also playing up so in the end I re-installed Windows (8 Pro) on that which solved a host of things and now it sees my Nexus 6.

wow you did this really ? this is my office computer so i cannot risk it. I use airdroid work very good and fast
Go to Device Manager and check if you can change the Nexus from ADB drivers to MTP. If it doesn't show MTP driver as an option, I had to switch off USB Debugging under Developer Options for the Nexus before Windows gave the MTP options. Otherwise, I'd try installing one of those Universal Android Driver tools.
