Hey Guys,
Blast me as I know you will --- I just got my n1 for ATT last week after converting from a BB9700;
Questions -
(1) After rooting what is the best mod to do --- everyone has something to say buy I am debating from Cynagen vs ModaCo..
(2) Radio upgrades, Is there a new n latest one for my verison of N1
!!
Try "Search"......and wrong section to post this...
I was in the same situation as you! Just got rid of my 9700 and got a N1
I've been playing with Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and more recently, 5.0.6.1-testing with the new .33.2 Undervolted/Overclocked/Extra RAM kernel. Everything is very snappy compared to stock and I couldn't be happier
I'm still looking around for radio roms

I'm going to recommend that you NOT ROOT YOUR N1.
Stick with the un-rooted phone for as long as you can.
First determine WHY you want to root.
Do you know shell scripting? You know much/little about Unix/Linux? Are you a power user? Are you an iPhone iBasher?
I've rooted and unlocked all of my HTC phones for the past few years, because I know what I'm doing. I read and read and read, searched searched searched these forums for reasons why I should or shouldn't do this or that.
You are new to these forums. New to Androidâ„¢.
I say you should play with your new phone for a few months.
Continue reading here about Cyanogen, Modaco, Enomther, apps2sd, rooting, radios, overclocking, etc.
If and when you learn ENOUGH by reading, searching, slimming, and searching and reading some more ... if you feel you want to root your Nexus One - by all means, DO It MAN!

I will tell you why 95% of people want to root on the Nexus One. No need to ask a prospect.
The reason is because they want cyanogenmod!
You advice is poor rooting is child play compared to 360 modding.
N1 modding is key to enjoying ones phone.
I have to admit, I rooted my Nexus right away.
Having said that, I spent almost a year on my G1 without rooting it. At first I didn't know it was an option. After I started reading about it, I started to realize that it was probably a wise thing to do. It then took me a few weeks of reading to figure out what I actually wanted to do to my phone before I took the leap and finally rooted it and installed CM which made my G1 experience exciting again.
I mention all this because I agree with OrganizedFellow. Spend some time getting to know how Android works before rooting and adding new features. It will help you appreciate the hard work of the devs even more when you do put custom ROMs on your phone.
If you can't wait, I recommend CM. As for the radio, if your phone doesn't lose 3G and stays connected like it should, don't worry about changing the radio. I "had" to change my radio to try getting rid of my 3G issues that the phone shipped with.

in contrast, if youre not super comfortable with going through the whole process just dip your toes in the water first by trolling forums and reading, you can after all brick your phone. I agree with organizedfellow, take your time and find out why and what benefits. i have not rooted yet but leaning closer as i read more and find that i really need the tethering in case im stuck with no wireless while out on a job (also the different color trackball would be sweet). Out side of those im pretty happy with everything stock, add to it with the rumors of himem coming in a future ota update i think i will be set....just that damn tethering...
You cant go wrong with any ROM available right now, but I highly suggest you try Enomther's ROM as well.

are you serious? nobody said anything about the comparison of rooting an android device (software) to modding an xbox 360 (hardware).
So by your logic, someone should jump right into modding their console because replacing the engine in a Boeing 747 is harder.
To the OP. Take the advice of those suggesting that you wait. For starters, you can see if your device has any hardware issues. Yes HTC is warrantying unlocked devices but why not avoid that hurdle and sit on your device for a week or three to just be sure. While you do that, you can read all that you can stomach in these forums and plan your best course of attack.
Welcome to the fray.

+1 that is some great advice, and I would take it. I was just like you and I last week I rooted my ATT N1. I love it, but I must say that I have put a lot more time into it than I expected. I spent a month before I got the N1 looking into this whole scene and I felt that I had the reasons to root. I would at least spend the time searching forums until all your questions that you have are answered. No body is going to be able to give you a perfect ROM that is for you because there are many different ones out there and what is good for one person may not be the best for another.
I would spend the time to get to know everything before you get going. I would say I know my way around technology pretty well, but if I didn't have the nice folks from this forum I would of had a very hard time with things. When people tell you to "search" they really aren't trying to be rude. To root your phone is a personal choice that only you can make. You are the one that spent the money and people spend a bunch of time making our HTC using lives that much greater.
I spent almost 4 hours last week rooting and unlocking and I have spent easily 30-40 since then learning all that I can learn and I must say that for me it was the right decision because I learned a bunch of things about my phone and now when I have a problem I am comfortable that I can find a way to fix it myself. If I don't then I know where to turn to "search" for help.
If you have any questions I would love to help you out although I am far from a master at this trade. I spent a bunch of time and I have a whole notebook of printouts that I have found in various places all over the web (especially this site) I would be more than happy to send them to you, but just do yourself a huge favor and research, research, research, research, and then when you feel you are done research some more. It will help you in the long run.
Have fun with your phone and good luck
By the way I am running the latest Cyanogen and a few other things. I am having a blast with .apk like the HTC keyboard, and I must say that for me wireless tethering is the greatest thing in the world. I have only touched the very end of this world, and I am so thankful for all the people out there that spend countless hours making our lives a lot easier. I had a bunch of help last week and people really didn't need to spend the time to help me out. I have also messed around with the latest Modaco Sense ROM and I like that a lot as well.
I am not anywhere near as sophisticated with the android software as most threads I have read which makes following normal instructions a bit difficult for someone like me.
I have a D1 that I want to be my test device and I am hoping that by "finding out the hard way" and potentially screwing things up, I might learn something.
That said, does anyone have easy to follow instructions on how I can root my original Motorola (Verizon) droid.
I need this from step one. I do not know what a kernel is other than in pop corn so please by kind with the vocabulary unless it is accompanied with a description.
Thanks for dealing/helping with my stupidity!

Several programs can accomplish this, z4root, Universal Androot, and SUPEROneClick. Look them up on these forums or Google.
what ever you do, do not use the methods the guy suggested above.
i recently was looking for the same info to root my new moto droid1. and the best i could come up with was the guide provided by the unlockr
HERE
here it is in plain text also if needed:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/23/how-to-root-the-motorola-droid/
follow the written step by step instructions and watch the video and this will be finished in like 30 mins tops. it hella easy this way and you know for sure youre rooted and ready for the next step.
superoneclick worked worked great!!!
I am not sure what the second guy was talking about. But superone click works like a charm just follow the instructions. Head over to xda dev and search for super one click

So I've done some poking around and I can't seem to find anything.
Full disclosure: this whole process is a little bit over my head. I'm reasonably savvy with technology, but just have next to zero experience with phones and I feel like I'm in a little bit over my head.
When I first got my Captivate about a year ago, a friend online walked me through getting ClockWork Recovery and FireFly installed. It's been running great but I'm really bored with the phone and thought flashing an ICS ROM might spice up the experience a little bit for me.
It's been suggested that I flash back to stock before I start mucking around - there is a lot of clutter on the phone and whatnot so I figure this wouldn't be a bad idea to just reset EVERYTHING back to the way it was before root and start from scratch.
I've got all of these random forum posts on XDA open (ODIN, CWR, ROM Images, etc) and an old IRC log open and trying to piece the puzzle together but I'm getting a bit nervous that I'm going to miss something or do something out of order.
I'm hoping that there is something out there somewhere that puts all of this in to a nice step by step, or at least into noob english so that I can understand it all easier.
Help please!!

Stickies are your friend. From here you can find the basics on how to use anyting. Most roms have instructions on how to flash. If you understand the basics everything falls in place. As always search, read, read, READ, and please understand what you are doing. As a slip up might soft brick or at worst case hard brick your phone.
I have owned and rooted and installed ROMS on several devices. But I must say this device is crazy. I wish I would have done some research before hand. It seems HTC has to be by far the worst android phones out. First to unlock a bootloader is stupid long and way too long of a process. Then in order to get a recovery or flash a ROM seems to be bricking peoples phone left and right..I mean really? And to top it off Cant find a straight forward guide anywhere. Bout to just take a sledgehammer to this POS..sorry for venting..
Get the hansoon 2000 toolkit its way easy and don't take long to do anything imo .

Wow, return prick mode on!!!!!
If you had rooted before and understood what you are doing you would have done the research FIRST
3rd sticky in the development section is:
[SUPERGUIDE] ICS-Root-Flash-Stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836 since you might have trouble finding a sticky at the top of the list.
and to prevent some further issues here are other related stickies:
[INDEX]HTC Vivid / Velocity / Raider [ROM's/Kernel's/Recovery's/Guide's](September12)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486024
[TOOL] HTC Vivid All-In-One Toolkit V2.2 [6-7-2012] [PERM ROOT] [Noob-Proof]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003
Lastly, as I am sure you have noticed the Noob-proof tag. If people make something idiot proof, the world must produce a bigger idiot to keep the balance.
Number 1 cause of bricked phones, afaik, is insufficient research, preparation, failure to RTFM and user error. so far htc has the easiest method I have come across, what is so hard about pasting a code into a website, then pasting what it put out into the phone?
Sorry man, probably wouldnt have been a prick but there is a sticky with SUPERGUIDE in caps just like that.
Are there easier devices out there to root & ROM? Sure. Is this one THAT bad? I don't think so. In less that one hour you can go from out of the box to custom everything (hboot, recovery, ROM, kernel, splash screen) and S-OFF.
Read the guide linked above and see what steps you need to do. Really, if you're used to working with other devices (and thus are familiar with flashing and adb, fastboot etc) the only off-putting part IMO is the wire trick, and even that only took me 1--15 minutes, and that was screwing it up at least a dozen times first.
It seems to me that a lot of the experienced users out there have trouble with this phone just because it's not exactly the same procedure as their last one... Take a few minutes to read the guides (at least to establish the flow and ORDER of the steps you need to pull off... I mean you don't need to read every step about using fastboot if you already know how) and you should be fine.
All the tools used on this phone as mentioned in these threads work fine, as many many other people have made them work. The only variable is the user.
I had the same feelings about this phone (was an impulse buy on Kijiji at $150)... and I was quite put off by the S-OFF process, until I actually did it and realized a shaved monkey could figure it out.
All, please direct me to the right thread if there is a newbie forum/sticky that I did not see.
I linked here from the XDA article re: best rooting methods (https://www.xda-developers.com/best-one-click-root-2018/). I am likely to leave behind the Pixel line after a few years and and thinking about a Samsung Note later this year. Other than an easy root on my daughter's old Fire tablet so I could access the Google Play store, I have no experience rooting phones, and want to know exactly what I'm in for if I buy a Samsung phone, as I intend to root it. This will be a big part of my decision as I don't want to be stuck with Samsung's UI. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction in terms of a step by step or a beginner's guide to make it easier?

Choose the fone you want to get and join the forum for it on XDA. Look thru the different threads and you should get a feeling for how easy/hard it is to achieve what you want.
