Laggy - Nexus 7 General

Anyone else experiencing lagginess? It's mainly in the home screen. Lag gets pretty bad. I've tried the stock launcher and Nova launcher and I still experience lag from time to time.
Widgets also constantly refresh often when coming back to the home screen from an app.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

The 500Mhz 5th core runs when you're doing simple tasks so that's probably why. My AT&T S3 is definitely snappier than my N7. The N7 completely destroys it while web browsing though.

If you have a bunch of active content widgets that update whenever you power up your device from sleep can cause the perception of lag.
I have no widgets on the stock launcher except weather and I have no lag.

I've had a few times where it straight up freezes for like 5 seconds.

MOst likely something you have installed, detecting wake and then pegging the CPU before all the other cores are upto speed.

No widgets here and no lag.

T3 doesn't work well with jelly bean,... cant believe Google didn't realized that. A dual core krait would have been a much better choice .
I wonder how the transformer infinity will do on jelly bean since it has a newer t3
Sent from my Jelly Beaned GNexus

I've got several widgets on my homescreens with no lag.

Background I/O operations (e.g. file downloads, app installs) can significantly slow down even a quad core device.

I have 6 widgets and no lag, you probably have widget that causes this lag, try removing one widget at a time, you will probably find which one is causing this issue. I have had similar problem with my xperia s, youtube widget causes the luncher to lag. I though this has been solved with the more powerful chip and JB in the nexus 7, but it seem that there are some sever badly built apps out there

LauncherPro performance :(

Hi,
I just got my Nexus S, and so far so good.
I installed LauncherPro and unlocked the Plus version as well.
But, it seems I don't see smooth buttery scrolling of the home screen.
My LauncherPro settings:
- Keep in memory = checked
- Enable scrollable widget = checked
- Number of home screen = 5
- Number of dock = 1
- Use 4 rows and 4 columns
- Memory profile = High
- Elastic scrolling = No
- High quality scrolling = No
- Minimum scrolling speed = 50
It is fast though, but it just not smooth ...
Am I expecting too much?
Update:
I don't know how to explain it, but something like this:
I can still see the "steps" when scrolling home screen (I am not using transition effect).
Horizontal scrolling movement by positioning the x coordinate of screen-image:
x := x + 10 ... this is fast, but not smooth as you can see the 10 pixels movement steps
x := x + 1 ... this is smooth, but might not be fast
I am hoping the LauncherPro re-write will greatly improve this, or utilizing the GPU if possible (NOT!).
Launcher pro kinda sucks now. The Guy hasn't supported it for a while now. I would stick with the stock or adw
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I would give ADW a try later.
How do you deactivate LauncherPro?
Just go into apps manager, go to LauncherPro app and "clear defaults". Once you hit the home button again you'll be given a choice of which home launcher to launch.
LP is buttery smooth for me.
The guy who coded it says he's rewriting it from scratch as the current version is based on Google's stock launcher and what he wants todo is inefficient with google's code. It's why I don't use it since gingerbread.

Lp plus is smooth as ever for me

Adw launcher ex to be exact. Its different from the original version
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
It's not as smooth as LP is on the Vibrant or Nexus One... that's a fact. It still is smoother than most launchers, but until he updates it for the Nexus S, it won't be as smooth. Although using an overclock kernel helps =)
LauncherPro+ had appalling stutter on my Nexus S (particularly during the leap animation), but I found it was fine after setting the Memory usage preset to Medium and changing the Homescreen cache type to Compressed.
Adjusting the ondemand CPU governor in SetCPU (Sampling rate 20000, Up Threshold 50) helped as well.
LauncherPro has always been very smooth for me. I prefer the features of ADW, but scrolling is a bit choppy on my nexus s (with cm7 rom). On LP, I use the 'low' memory usage setting with 5 homescreens & lots of Widgets
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
launcher pro vs adw ex
I tried to use ADW ex and loved it just found myself going back to launcher pro plus because of the sense like widgets (bookmarks, twitter, facebook, calendar, friends). I know that I can find widgets separately but none have looked as good as these and been scrollable too. I like the transitions of ADW and all the customizations but yeah just not enough to get me away from launcher pro.
The one thing that bothers me about LP is how the 3D app effect is laggy.
Same here, my LauncherPro on my Nexus S isn't nearly as smooth as it was on my Nexus One. I've switched to ADW Launcher EX and then wasn't happy with the app drawer performance and now I'm using Go Launcher. Pretty satisfied with Go Launcher and it's free so whatever. But I really hope the LauncherPro rewrite solves all the problems with it being slow and such.
Stock launcher is lightweight and easy
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
go launcher definitely feels smoother than LP.
Just be weary of GO Launcher's permission requests. Seems to be a whole lot.

Yeah that's one of three reasons I've not tried our yet. I find it strange for it to need all of them
Agree, it is even slower than on my HTC Desire ...
And I don't have much widgets on it ...
Yeah, I think this is just Nexus S ... smoothness is not one of it's features.
I can live with it, and the "waiting game" for an update from Google is nice
Especially if I can walk into all my Android friend owners who still stuck in 2.2 or less

Nexus One Performance

Basic question here is will the performance of the nexus one ever compare to the Nexus S?
When I first bought my n1, I noticed that apps opened pretty quickly, but any scrolling seemed a bit sluggish. The app drawer, home screen swiping, and scrolling in any app didn't feel or look quite as smooth as I had hoped. I looked around for a way to improve this, but have yet to find anything. CyanogenMod was nice, but didn't really help the issue. And even Google commented on their own Nexus One forums about improving it at one point. But that never seemed to come about.
I went to a best buy the other day to check out the Nexus S and the difference was huge. Scrolling and all other animations, even with live wallpapers on was fantastically smooth and fluid.
Both phones have a 1ghz CPU and 512 MB of ram. Shouldn't the Nexus One be able to perform as well?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I played with the nexus s next to my nexus one 2 times for 45min each, and I couldn't find any difference between the two speeds, which made me happy with my nexus one. You sure you don't need a wipe or something.
The snap dragon out performs the hummingbird in many types of computational operations. The graphics is the only advantage the hummingbird really has.
I've noticed a lot of complaints in the Nexus S subforum about sluggishness/laggy stuff, just like people say the N1 has.
Yeah well the nexus s owners discovered that their phone does not yet have graphics acceleration for things like the web browser, so the nexus one murders the nexus s on many specific types of web pages. This will be fixed when the proper update comes out, just like it did on the galaxy phones. But still, how could Google release the nexus s like that. Insane.

i agree that the nexus one's scrolling seems a bit sluggish. Using launcher pro made a difference to me. you should try it. also CM now has the option for overshoot when scrolling in the menus (think iphone scrolling). My phone seems smoother now. live wallpapers still make the phone a little sluggish though
I tried with the nexus s & compared to my nexus one I didn't find any big speed/scrolling differences.
Yeah, I recently was changing my live wallpaper and decided to check out a couple of non-live to see what they looked like. I have had my N1 for about 9 months, and had a live wallpaper on the whole time. I couldn't believe the change when I moved to a static-WP. Boy do I feel dumb, but happy!

not only does a static wallpaper make an enormous difference in scrolling, but install launcher pro and the scrolling becomes even smoother, like 55 fps smooth. its butta.....
I do use LPP, and have for most of my phone ownership time. I also recently turned off 3d scrolling. Makes the app drawer pop up so nice, but I miss the 3D.

choppy background scrolling?

Hey Everyone,
I've been trying to figure this out for a while.
Is anyone seeing choppy scrolling on their Note?
I was just watching the HD demo movie for 'townsmen premium'.
When you get halfway through the movie, to the gameplay section, the movie pans slowly to the left, and it is noticibly choppy.
I experience the same problem on backgrounds of 2d scroller games sometimes, like broken sword, or garfield's revenge.
Is this happening to you? I always believed it's just that the CPU/GPU are underpowered for the Note's resolution (which is why i keep pushing against a resolution bump). It's my biggest reason for considering the Note 2.
It only really glaring when the entire background is scrolling - most of the time it's just fine. I sometime wonder if there's just not enough frame memory or something to scroll the entire screen. (yes, I made that up).
If it's NOT happening to you, can you post:
1) What ROM you are using
2) Are you overclocked, if so to what
3) Are you using any relevant settings (i.e. force GPU rendering)
4) Anything else possibly relevant.
- Frank
I have no stutter or scrolling issues, even with live wallpapers. Here is my current setup:
ROM: Clean Note 4.00 (LRK)
Kernel: Note Core V12
Launcher: Nova Launcher Prime 1.2.2, 7 pages filled with 5x5 widgets.
No overclock, Force GPU Rendering is turned on.
I use to experience lag and stutter on GB, but ICS helped much to improve that and this current Clean Note/Note Core/Nova setup that I'm using feels very smooth. Some poorly coded live wallpapers will still stutter and I get occasional launcher redraw when the web browser has eaten up tons of RAM, but all in all I'm very pleased.
Hope that helps.
The smoothest combination I've found is:
CleaNote v5 ROM (v4 was just as good) plus
Notecore v12 OC (this runs at 1.6ghz and is a little smoother when navigating around, opening and closing apps, playing games etc.)
I have force gpu rendering off. I think Gavin said in his kernel thread that with the optimizations in his kernel it's not necessary, and may even impede performance, or negate the benefits of the kernel.
I don't watch a lot of video, but hd YouTube clips work fine for me.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
smoothest I found is cm9 and aokp
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
I'm using the same as richlam, the scrolling performance is improved when running a good overclocked Kernel with a lightweight ROM.
I'd lie if I said I never see the odd judder, but I'm hoping we get to butter up on the TW roms real soon

Games lag so much. any ideas why?

So far to test it further more I played some THD-games/tegra3 optimized games like DeadTrigger and Shadowgun and the lag is unbearable. Ive had the device for a while now(pre-ordered) but I didnt really have the time to try some games so Im not sure if its been like this or if its the update. Pretty much all fps game lags to hell. Its unplayable. Ive looked at vids on youtube of people playing similar games and theyre device seems to do well. Not mine though.
Heres some info that could help:
Nexus 7:
Not-Rooted
4gb space used( its the 16gb version)
OTA updates so Im guessing its the 4.2 ver.( google currents and all...)
You've probably got some app that is bringing your performance down.

The only people who don't have lag while gaming is those that don't have anything installed in their nexus 7. I mean literally nothing, except the stock apps. Those type of people are the so called "geeks" and most of xda folks in nexus scenes are geeks. No use asking your question to these folks because they'll give the same answers: uninstall all apps. IMO what you can do now is root and install a custom kernel then over clock your cpu and gpu. I was having the same issue as you OP, but after a few tweaks here and there, the lags are reduced (but still visible somewhere). 4.2.1 is making our nexus 7 slow, that's a fact. Hopefully Google will fix this issue soon..

i know that feeling, having to uninstall something to install something else
One thing I did notice that I found unusual is that I'm always at 450-600mb of ram usage. I tried terminating every task and I only got it down to 400+mb. There's no way that the OS uses that much.... Or does it?

So your saying you only had minimal lag during the prev versions? If that's true then it can work if I flashed a ROM from the previous JB updates?

That is nonsense. I have loads of apps loaded, and the device is full of media, and I have no lag whatsoever. Either on 4.2 or 4.1 (which I have moved back to to fix Bluetooth issues).
The lag is a myth.

I have about 2gb free on my 32gb nexus. Full of games and media. Got a little lag before I disabled currents now the only games that get a little stutter are gameloft games but that's nothing new

I have a 16GB I bought back in September and it had the lag problem and I had about 600mb free. I kept doing the Forever Gone trick (filling up alll the free space and then deleting it) and it helped in the short term, but the lag would always return eventually. So I decided to bite the bullet and made a Nandroid to an external USB flash drive through the latest version of TWRP, copied /data/media to it too and then formatted /system, /data and /cache. Simply doing a factory reset wasn't enough; it had to be a fresh re-format of ext4. Then I restored my Nandroid and copied back /data/media and even with 600mb free, I have had no lag ever since.
I think a re-format on all the N7 partitions using a recovery built on the latest Google kernel (I.e. a kernel based on 4.1.2 or newer) is the only way to properly reset the internal map of the 16gb's flash controller for those that shipped with plain 4.1. A simple factory reset won't do it because it only deletes files via rm, rather than re-format with mkefs.ext4 (verified because after a factory reset, the files on /data/media (which lives on the main /data partition) were still there).
I suspect that newer N7s that shipped with 4.1.2 or newer probably don't have this problem, even if they have the same flash controller.

I also have experienced lags in NFS most wanted. I think that problem is connected with multiuser accounts, because when the game started lagging, i have switched to second user account and killed apps running in background. IT helped and game was again smooth. IT was not once, I had this problem several times.

Really? That's weird. Because I have 77 apps installed including the stock system apps (27 of them are games, quite a few are very large like GTA 3 & Vice City) and I have no lag whatsoever.
So no, it's not "fact". Stock 4.2.1 16GB unrooted.
I love it when people use their own tiny experience to create "fact" for the rest of the world.

Memory management and multitasking

One of my biggest issues with the OneX was the overly aggressive memory management that made multitasking impossible and plain broke some stuff. Even on my GS3 AT&T with 2GB of RAM the memory management is quite aggressive probably to help battery life or something. On my Nexus 4 however I can choose to leave apps running non stop for days at a time and they remain that way. Especially handy for Maps or Ingress BTW.
Anybody with one have a sense on how it is on the One? I'm hoping the extra 1GB of RAM helps but then Sense was always overly bloated and the whole blink feed thing can't have a small footprint.
Looking for thoughts since the phone is useless to me if it will continuously kill apps in the background.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Well I dont know if the apps remain days after launching them but I got to tell You that its faaaar better than One X. The other day I opened 10tabs in the browser at the same time and no reloading. When it comes to new sense its like a night and day. Normally on my OneX ram usage was about 800MB without any app runnig. With The One I have 550MB from 1.5GB that is usable so that indicates that Sense 5 is a lot lighter and believe me... Its really fast. They got rid of most widgets, animations are more simple etc. Blinkfeed is kinda nice but it needs extended functionality.
Multitasking isn't an issue.
I've come from phones with 512Mb RAM - the dialer in particular used to get shut down all the time, leading to lag when someone rang, or when I wanted to boot the dialer up again to ring someone. I rooted those phones just so I could lock the dialer in memory.
The HTC One appears to do the same (well, the dialer eventually disappears from the recent apps list anyway), but even so, it is no problem. Using the dialer as an example, whether I have used it 5 minutes ago or six hours ago, when I press the dialer button it comes up straight away, i.e no laggy delay like previous phones. And the dialer comes up and the phone rings pretty much straight away when someone rings me (well, me ringing myself from my other phones to test the response time).
So more than enough RAM (and processing power) on the HTC One to not make it an issue any more, everything flies and all apps come straight up when you want them to. More than happy.
I know what u mean coming from the HTC one x and one x+ myself . HTC have solved the problem finally.. this baby can multitask properly.. and very quickly I might add

Can u pls tell me how much memory is free when u boot it up and let it settle...

Regarding free RAM, out of the box there was about 1GB RAM free (1.5GB showing as available in the 'running apps' screen, with about 550MB used, or as it is displayed in Sense 5, '550MB/1.5GB').
I've now disabled all the stuff I don't need, and loaded Novalauncher, with six home screens full of widgets and app icons, and also Widgetlocker, i.e. quite a lot of stuff loaded - now it shows '825MB/1.5GB' (the range is about 775MB to 875MB from what I observe), which means roughly 600-700MB free RAM still, allegedly. That's without any specialist tweaking from me.
No slowdown or lag at all since I have loaded everything up.
Coming from the Nexus 4, multi tasking is a bit disappointing for me; it’s not a deal breaker but with the N4 I’d switch to an app I’d not touched in a week and it would be up, responsive and exactly where I’d left off a week later no matter what I’d done in the mean time. On the One however, apps sometimes have to reopen and - for me a more annoying behaviour- sometimes relatively recently used apps do a sort of ‘refresh’ when they first load up. The app seems to load up, but then it fades out and then back again, which means that although they usually pick up where they left off, they’re unresponsive for a second. It’s not all the time and it may sound like nit-picking but it feels like a fairly significant delay when everything else is so fast.
It’s also frustrating using certain apps where the refresh can lead to you losing progress; I was using a run tracker for example, stopped my run, multi tasked to music and stopped that, jumped in the shower and then switched back to the run log to sort out the details, but instead of loading my stats where I’d left it, or even reopening the app entirely, it showed an image of my runs stats just as i'd left it but then refreshed and loaded up a new run. Because i'd not pressed 'continue' in the app the run was lost. It's poor that the app didn't autosave before that point but it’s not unique behaviour either as I’ve had the same happen with office documents, games and other apps - seems very odd behaviour to me and not something i've seen in other phones where an app is either ready where it was left, or needs reopening.
If I’d gone straight from the SGS2 to this it wouldn’t be an issue but with the N4 showing me what can be done, I do feel that the One could use some improvement.
It also depends on the app, some apps for me dont save their state at all.
As soon as I switch app it reloads when I go back to it, however on my Senny with edited memory management the same app could be opened again at same state without reloads.
For me, every single app on the 9 recent apps grid will load instantly with no refresh.
Even the stock browser? That's the biggest culpit for me in terms of seemingly needless refreshing. Hopefully what im experiencing will be fixed either by HTC or a third party as if this phone had the N4's multitasking prowess - and there's no reason it can't imo - it would feel much, much better to me.
Yeah the browser is fine; are you on stock rom? Not sure if ARHD has any tweaks in regards to multitasking but it's good for me.

Yep completely stock - usually like to wait a few weeks before going down the custom rom route so i can get a good guage of the otb experience. If it fixes the muti-tasking i'll switch over to ARHD once i've fixed my N4 though
So some people are actually having the refresh problems again?

I don’t know what the last generation HTC One’s were like but this isn’t terrible, it’s better at multi tasking than my S2 in general - just not as good as the N4 and the strange refreshing/redrawing behaviour seems totally pointless and counterintuitive.
At least it does that because of the battery !

It isn't pointless it helps save battery because it essentially freezes apps in the background so they don't use CPU. When you go back to them they then resume and have to refresh. So in the end it will help with battery - on a stock One X I used to easily get 5h screen on time. Never got close on a SGS3 or any other phone.

Not going to lie but my Note 2 has never refreshed an app yet. If the One is plagued with refreshing and aggressive memory management its a deal breaker. Im just confused because some people say yes and others no to the problem. Which is it?

As always it depends entirely on what apps you use and what state they report. The memory management on the One won't be for RAM reasons but CPU and battery reasons. The worse news is even after rooting and changing system settings some of the aggressive management on the One X was at the kernel level.
Given the extra memory on the One. I'm guessing it won't be as bad but you'll have to use it yourself to know for sure.
I'm currently on a Nexus 4 and this is the best Android multitasking I've ever seen on a phone ever.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I think it also depends what phone you came from and how you use it. I constantly switch out between a dozen or so apps and am used to the nexus 4 which is pretty much flawless for multi tasking, but having used a one x+ side by side (literally 5 minutes ago) the one is massively improved, and it's also a lot better than my s2.
It's a damn fast phone and most of the time there's no issue, but it could still be improved slightly - I'll check out a custom rom this week and see if that does it.
I'm still very happy with my purchase - particularly since the battery life has improved significantly and now trounces what I got with the n4 in the same situation.
