and it is still good! I was building a mount for it in my garage and it was resting on a mount for my cell phone on my work bench. I bumped it and it fell screen down on my concrete floor. I was scared to even look at it but when I picked it up all that was wrong was that there is a tiny nick in the corner of the screen and the back cover came loose. This thing can take a beating!!

Good news that it can take a drop.

I was ready to send condolences!!! Instead a big Congratulations!:highfive:
It's probably because the Ipad has a 10 inch screen but idk, it's nice knowing my Nexus 7 can survive!
You murderer!! congrats on the big scare

The Nexus 7 does remarkably well in these tests.
I'm actually kinda shock the N7 survived all those tests. IPad tho, not so good at all lol

dark @ nexus7
I would imagine that the iPad would fare worse, if for no other reason because it is heavier. In the two dry drops, the iPad also seemed to land badly (right on the corner). I'm not about to recreate those tests, but it's nice to know that if I do something stupid, there's a chance of survival
i found it kinda funny, the nexus 7 didnt look like it was doing well after the water test yet the guy still was like 'oh look how great it did"

Looked like the Nexus 7 was working as well to me after the water as it was performing before going into it. Screen on, sound working, touch screen fully functional, buttons working. What more do you want, auto-dry of the exterior :silly: ?

So yesterday I nearly destroyed my phone by placing it on my leather wallet. After doing so, I went to the kitchen and after around ten minutes I heard a loud noise of something smashing on the ground. It was my N4 that slowly slipped from my wallet. Luckily, it just hit the chair and not the ground and I only have a minor scratch in the metal bezel. After some testing I found that the glass back is stupidly slippery. It even starts to slide when the surface has quite a lot of grip. I think this is due to the coating of the glass. Funny enough, it feels really nonslip and safe holding it in the hand. So be careful where you place your phone!

This is why I'm gonna put best skins ever or zagg on the back for more grip
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda app-developers app
yea tilted surfaces do that
just playing couldn't pass that up
I played with 1 at TMO and it is very slippery. Im glad they picked a could side material for grip
We are all going to break this phone.

Yeah, I Put a case on mine.
Why the hell is Google putting glass on the back is beyond me. I guess none of them own an Iphone 4/4S or never heard of constant broken back glass from it. This is one slippery phone and a finger print magnet.
My iPhone 4S has slipped quite a few ties doing exactly that- sitting on my leather wallet. Luckily, I havent managed to crack it. I hope the Nexus 4 has a strong back.
Bummer... I have to get a case soon.
I put mine on my desk to charge, and the weight of the USB cable was enough to make the phone slither off the desk like a snake. Happened twice actually, I blamed the cats the first time. This phone is too smooth
Until you get a case or if you do not want to get a case then you could go to walmart, target or home depot etc. and get some of the small round rubber feet they put on boxes and vases to keep them from scratching tables and stick one in each corner of the back. They will keep the phone from sliding and help the speaker from getting so muffled when laying flat.

Same thing happened to me the very night I got it. Was watching a movie in my recliner and had the phone in the arm of my chair. Shifted slightly, heard a thump, jumped in horror.
The phone had slid down between the arm and seat of the chair, fell through, hit the wood frame on the way down. Nice big tick in my chrome bezel right next to the volume rocker to show for it.

Definitely very slippery - slipped from my hand as I was handing it to my wife to look at ~5min after unboxing. landed on the corner on our hardwood floor and spiderwebbed the back.
A case will cover it and the front is fine so it could have been much worse. I'll just wait until replacement glass backs are available

The glue used on those things like to slip, especially if they become warm like with the body temperature the phone will reach in someone's pocket. And then that glue leaves behind residue along the slippage path.
Did we really need a thread to tell people to be careful where they put their phone?

Yea I submerged it right into the bag of rice, for about 40 hours, but still wouldn't turn on. that's when I opened it up and rubbed it down with alcohol. Put it back together and voila

Thanks, I don't do this for a living nor did I follow a guide but it looks a lot more complicated than it is. I actually didn't know about the rubbing alcohol being a solution to water damage, my cousin told me, then i just bought the necessary tools to open it up made sure all excess water was dried, rubbed it down, blow dried it for a few minutes and put it back together.
And the screen wasn't trashed. That's good. Maybe that fused digitizer/LCD combo is a good thing after all
Did you see where the water sensor is?
Yea there are two of them basically within an inch of each other. One to the right of the rear camera in the center of the upper frame and the other just above the battery.
I used bleach and qtips on both stickers and they looked brand new in under a minute. Although if you look carefully you could see wrinkles. Wouldn't be noticeable with lighter water damage .

impressive, it looks like nowadays phones and circuits inside them survive better than the old small brick nokia phones in the past.
My sister washed her samsung corby in the washing machine, put it in rice and turned it back on it still works. Same I did with my Sony point and shoot camera.
For the OP this may be a sign. you should consider buying xperia Z
The rice trick is a common one. Works well.

Oh, don't you start with nokia phones. You could throw one on concrete from 5th floor, then dump it into a glass of water, dry it out, put back together and it still works. Except for power button. But still!
Call me impressed with the way they tortured this phone and the minor damage it occurred.

I don't think the girl's case is odd at all. If you look carefully at Cnet's phone after the drop test, you'll notice that the panel actually came off the phone because of the dent. The force of the drop was lost in the denting and separating. i.e. The cnet phone got lucky. Not saying the One isn't tough. (It is slippery, though )
Thing took it like a champ. Pretty sure an s4 wouldn't have survived, and would have melted to the grill after the screen was shattered and the plastic destroyed from the previous tests.
I don't think the One's screen *glass* is particularly special, just the latest flavor of gorilla glass, right? So it shouldn't fare any better or worse than an iphone or other GG covered screen. I saw a youtube drop-to-pavement test that showed a similar shattery aftermath for both those devices.
Kudos to ASUS for producing such a robust product.
Last October (Halloween to be exact) my family and I went the local Science Center (my son's favorite destination) for the kid's Halloween party. I of course brought my N7 to stay occupied while he soaked up SCIENCE & FUN...
After a long day, we head home stopping for dinner. As I go to load my son into the car after dinner, I put my N7 on the roof....
As we travelled up the interstate we heard a weird whistling noise that lasted for 10 minutes or so before "going away"....
At home I realized what must have happened....:crying:
Flash forward to last week...I get a call.
The guy  on the other end asks "did you lose a tablet?" YES!....Holy Cow...you can't be serious....
Seems he plugged it in and a little while later it was able to boot to the lock screen where I had my contact info....
We set a time to meet and I got my N7 back. :highfive:
I plugged it in and what do you know, it seems to be fine.
N7 (no sleeve, no nothing) in a zippered 2-up CD case I had lying around...survived flying off the top a car at 70mph....almost 6 months outdoors....IOWA winter....sub-zero temps...snow....ice....rain...
Only damage: 1" piece of the silver trim on the bottom right corner is broken... WOW!
That's crazy man lol

Wet...I don't know... inside the zippered case was damp for sure as the ink bled on the couple of pages of paper I had kept with the N7.
You were Super Lucky.. Dealing with asus is NO FUN
I think you were just very lucky. There were including myself many thousands of people have major issues with the screen cracking and breaking on the nexus 7 when it came out.. The first one i bought. Came in the mail after waiting and waiting took it out of the box and the screen was not secure on the device. I held it in my hand and the screen crushed under my thumb. It took months to get my money back. at that time they were NOT Doing exchanges .
anyway Just my two pennies be careful next time your not likely to be so lucky. Mine is kept in a BOB J Gear case . i have seen all over about the same issue with the nexus 4 phones
Thanks for your story....

i wonder if 2013 version can do same things. honestly, i don't want to test my device in such way )
That is incredibly lucky.
Unfortunately mine fell off the sofa from less than 3 feet high on it's side and the screen cracked to such an extent that it no longer responded to touches.
That's luck nothing to do with build quality haha the original Nexus 7 didn't have too much of a great build quality especially with the screen coming out on some devices.

Yeah the Nexus 7 was a good device if you didn't have to RMA. But apart from the screen being faulty, there was a bad EMMC which cause slow crawl speeds on the tablet until 4.3 implemented FSTRIM automatically at a certain battery threshold. I just ran it via script and I didn't have any problems none the less.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I must have been extremely lucky too in that I never had any of the problems others seem to have had with the 2012 N7...
Needless to say I have been babying it since I got it back
I guess that really demonstrates the usefulness of a decent case for it.
Any device that falls you have a 50/50 chance of the screen cracking. I know my old thunderbolt I dropped it many times and the screen didn't crack. Then that one day it fell just right and the screen shattered. Maybe one day they can make a screen that's shatterproof but if they did we wouldn't buy new replacement devices lol. I wouldn't say I am very careful with my tablet but I have dropped it a few times and so far it hasn't cracked yet.
