Things to do while waiting for my Nexus 7 to arrive - Nexus 7 General

I admit being a complete noob on the Android subject. I ordered my Nexus 7 16GB on july 9th and it will be (finally!) delivered tomorrow (the 30th). I live in Canada, and the wait has been agonizing. I ordered directly from Google Play.
So, what to do while I was waiting and impatiently checking my emails from Google? I've learned a lot from these forums. First, getting prepared for rooting this device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
I've read all the thread and since I'm using Windows 7 64-bits, I think I'm ready to cope with the driver issue some users have.
Secondly, I'm aware that I could get a N7 that has the screen separation issue so I also prepared myself to deal with it if it's the only problem and it's not too severe to return the device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800418
This fix seems to be the most promising one amidst the ton of threads and posts I've read.
I've also learned how to make a nandroid backup with the CWM recovery and I may spend a part of my $25 Google credit on Rom Manager Pro.
I plan to use the N7 mostly as an ebook reader, retrogaming through emulators, light surfing. Any other suggestions from you, Android experts?

Yup when I waited for my nexus 7. I got all the tools ready, rom, kernel, and root toolkit.
I ordered mine on the 7th and was able to pick it up on the 13th. From Gamestop

Speculation on source of certified pre-owned Nook Colors

I just finished watching the Home Shopping Network (HSN)'s pitch for the NC from back in late March, and then read through the comments on their page.
Comments started out strong with people receiving their units about April 2nd, but then soured about two weeks later as the 'mid April' update didn't materialize. The comments which were negative indicated that in order to return the NC within the 30 day deadline they had to begin that process around April 15th or so. The avalanche of disappointed HSN buyers just kept piling on starting about that time. The last week or so of reviews is decidedly negative and has many sharing the sentiment that they were returning their units, using the lack of an OTA update by 'Mid-April' as the reason (though I suspect that the $50 extra cost for an uSD card plus 100 classic books drove a lot of the anger).
Shortly after the avalanche on HSN's site, we began to see B&N offering 'certified pre-owned' units for about 10% OFF ($225 instead of $250).
I don't believe in coincidences - do we think that the Certified Pre-Owned units are HSN returns, which ironically might be bought by the very people who returned them in the first place?
That's some interesting thinking. I totally forgot about the HSN thing and haven't heard about the certified pre owned stuff. Sounds like something BN would do though.

they should offer 50$ off instead of 25$.. preowned kinda taints the unit for me and i wouldnt wanna risk it for that price

Could also be a small percentage of them are from idiots who "bricked" it an brought it back to B&N. I bet B&N has their own recovery SD or USB boot toolset.

I can go to a pawn shop and get one for $80.
Picked up one for my daughter two days ago, it's in perfect condition.
I would advise to check local pawn shops as people need money for the holidays.
Thanks for the heads up. I went ahead and bought one. It solved my problem of keeping my Kindle Fire vs. returning it for a Nook Tablet. Now I case use the Nook Color with its greater memory for video playback and use the Kindle Fire for everything else, including the pure consumption of Amazon kool-aid.
I'm not comfortable yet with the Nook Tablet and the potential for Barnes & Noble to lock things down with an unavoidable OTA. Maybe in two to three months.
well... ordered mine 10sec ago
Not shipping to Canada... sigh
they also don't ship to Israel... not that i stopped me, use 3rd party to ship it to Canada
How did you manage that? I don't use eBay that often
Missed the $119 but picked up 2 today at $129 for the kids.
May regret not getting a 3rd one for ME... LoL
Now on to learning the triple boot / boot menu tricks for this one.
Just when I got my I777 phone sorted here comes another toy (er.. tool) to research.
Has B and N updated any with shipping info. At order, it said it would arrive within 3-5 days. I'm on the 3rd business day and it still has not been marked as shipped on the ebay summary.
Anyone else or has anyone recievd their order?

Purchased mine Saturday AM, got email yesterday (Wednesday) that it had shipped. No tracking number so, do not know when it will arrive. Hopefully soon!
Oh boy, spent 20 minutes on hold this morning trying to get through to B&N cust service. Then called on my break, spending my whole break on the phone. The rep couldn't find any info for me or refund my money. This is my first experience with B&N, are things generally difficult with them?
As I'm typing this I got an ebay message from B&N saying there has been a warehouse issue and they are shipping it at the fast method possible at no cost. They will email me tracking info once it ships. Fair enough.
This is my first tablet and I've been scouring this forum since the second I ordered it. Can't wait to root and install CM7 but none of the instructions say step one is getting the Nook
Yeah, this is my first tablet also, can't wait to get cm 7 on it! I have cm 7 on my Atrix and it's great!

It sounds as if ordering through Ebay is not as in synch with their normal supply chain as ordering through their website.
When I have ordered through their website the experience was more seamless.
I ordered one black Friday, received it today. It took maybe 15 minutes to get CM up and running for me. Loving it so far...best $119 I've spent in a while.

Mine arrive in excellent condition.
Took me a while to get CM7 installed...until thanks to this forum i realized I didn't have the latest CWM.
Should be a nice compliment to my Samsung Infuse 4g.
I'll be very happy with it.
Well worth $120
Hi all! Ordered mine the Saturday after thanksgiving, came in yesterday, running CM7 off the SD card, and am very pleased. Be sure to get a Sandisk class 4 card if running the OS off of it, there's a thread here on XDA about them and when I tested my new Sandisk 16G class 4 was many times faster at small block than my class 10 4G I bought a while back. Woohoo!
Looks like they are up to $150 now. Still not a bad deal.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOOK-Color-...US_Tablets&hash=item45ff2bc88b#ht_1932wt_1139
Hi mine also arrived yesterday, too. I would like to install CM7 rom. However I tried many ways to create boot SD card (and try on both 16GB and 4GB). I checked each SD card and they both contained 4 correct files (mlo, u-boot.bin, ulmage, uRamdisk)....
After I inserted the SD card and turned it on....it always directly boot from the BN default OS.....can't boot from the SD card. It can read these SD cards and generate some directories (My files, B&N Downloads, LOST.DIR) on it. Does it lock bootable SD card?
Would you guys show me how to set up NC to boot from SD card?
I got my $119 refurb Nook Color on Monday and had no problems getting CM7 onto the nook... so I don't think anyone locked the ability for the Nook to boot from SD.
Did you follow these instructions? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
If you can see those 4 files, it looks like winimage did its job. Did you then download a CM7 rom zip file from http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=encore and place it onto the SD card as well?

Should've waited for 2nd gen nexus 7!

Just want to get this off my chest. I purchased an 8 gig nexus 7 online immediately after it was released. Being an iPhone user and having little to no experience with android products I fell in love. Good bye iOS. A few weeks ago I forgot that my nexus 7 was in my back pocket and got into my truck and cracked the hell out of the screen. I was not a happy camper. $200 and a trip to Staples later and I replaced my 8 gig with a 16. Wonderful. With the exception of the fact that the same day I bought my replacement and I was flipping through flipboard I read that Google is probably releasing a second gen nexus 7 this summer. Now I wish I would have waited for the latest and greatest for the same price. Only question now is should I return this unit and then go back in couple months for the second gen?

Enjoy your 16GB Nexus. The 2nd gen will be improved but not greatly. Wait for gen 3.
I say hold onto it. If the new N7 seems like its worth the upgrade sell.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I think that you should keep it, 1st gen nexus 7 is a nice powerful device, off course 2nd gen will perform better, and I want to say that if you can live without it for 3 months, why not? But am afraid of the availability of the 2nd gen and also afraid of first batch...

Early adopters gonna adopt... early
I ordered the Nexus 7 16gb from Google the day preorders became available and I was one of the lucky ones that received mine on time and didn't have any of the issues that came along with many of the first run of devices like the screen separation or bad flicker or screen washout. So with that being said, I wouldn't count on being that lucky again. I'm going to hold onto mine until I see what all is going to go wrong with the first runs of the 2nd gen N7's because if I had had as many problems as others had with theirs I would definitely not be a repeat customer.

Return it and wait!!!
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
I'd say return it and wait, if they do announce the 2nd gen Nexus 7 it is most likely to be released a month after it's announcement, therefore it would be out by next month, Google I/O is only a few days away now, if there's no such thing and it was all rumors you can just buy the Nexus 7 again.
Don't wait for any new generation models. Simply enjoy what you currently have. If you keep waiting for the next best device you will never end up enjoying anything.
Say the 2nd generation Nexus comes out, and just a month later a better tablet in the same price range comes out from another manufacturer. What then? Just buy what you want and enjoy it and stop worrying over products which don't even exist yet.

Here's a list of specs of the next N7. I wouldn't call that jaw-droping. It just isn't impressive enough for me to ditch my current N7. But if by some reasons you want a rear camera and a Qualcomm chip then you should wait for it.
I do believe in getting as much as you can for your dollar.
I would use the N7 as long as you can before your return period. The I/O conference is this Wednesday. Well know more then.
But for $200, do you want this years model or last years?
I have a N7 and its wonderful. Typically on Nexus devices, you can easy get 2 years out of them before wanting to upgrade.
If you own a current N7, upgrading doesn't make sense. But if you are new and have the option of one or the other, I'd say the new one.
Faster processor, rear camera (which is useless on a tab IMO), higher resolution screen, Qi wireless charging, newer Android, an extra year of official support, more ram, etc.
I'm picking one up for lots of reasons.
1. Support the Nexus project.
2. New toy
3. Pass off the first gen as a gift to family member
4. Above items

No, because you will never be happy. Technology moves on, the Nexus 7 has been around for a year, a refresh is possible (but still not confirmed), and Apple are no different in this respect.
Call it a Nexus7s and you see that there is NEVER a right time to buy. Be happy that you have a unit that has refined production process with none of the niggles that early units sometimes had...
The Nexus7 is a great device, worth every penny, and it holds it's resale value well. Enjoy it for what it is, and don't try and surf the bleeding edge way, you will always be frustrated...
If you always wait for the next model, you'll never buy anything.
Its worth the upgrade. The tegra 3 was just about a year old the time the N7 came out. The S4 Pro isn't nearly as old, so it has a more current gen CPU this time around. Its a relatively inexpensive device.. its not like its 500$ every year.. whats 200$ nowadays? I've had my N7 since launch.. and the Next gen is going to be a first day buy for me. Im currently selling my N7 and will use those funds for the next gen. As one brought out.. use it as long as your return period allows you and return it for full price.. save the money and get the next gen.
And please ignore all the , "Wait for next years!" crap.. with that logic.. you'll keep waiting.. Next year they'll say the same thing.
I guess it depends if you bought it because you really wanted to do something with it or because you just wanted to check it out. If you just need a toy and you feel like you can wait, then you should.
You know what renews an old device? A shiny new update software can only go so far though.

+1 THIS!
And now some new rumors suggest that the new gen of Nexus 7 will be revealed on June 10.
Even if you wait till then getting the hands on the device might add a few weeks more as i'm pretty sure the first shipment will be gone in a day.
In short, keep your Nexus 7 and wait until you see the specs and availability before deciding to sell your Nexus 7.
Well if it was anything like last year, Staples and other local outlets will have them. I didn't have a problem finding one at all locally. Eventually the 16gb's started to become rare but there were plenty of 8gbs. And the 32gb version I bought at OfficeMax before it was even supposed to be released and didn't have a problem. They had a "skid" of them, they said.
I agree that trying to order one on Google Play will be tight though... but I've always had relief in buying one locally so that if there was a problem, I could just take it back and get my money back or exchange it on the spot. Shipments through Google Play last year were pretty horrendous with shipments lasting weeks.

White Nexus 4 now available in US Google Play Store With Free Bumper

It's just a new hue for a seven-month-old phone, but there are still a few Nexus 4 enthusiasts who are ecstatic that a white version has finally been released. It officially launched two days ago in Hong Kong, but it's now hitting the US Google Play Store, as well as T-Mobile's website "for a limited time." If the $299 / $349 Play Store price is above your budget, the UnCarrier's financing plan will be your best option: it's offering the alabaster Android device for $20 down with 24 monthly payments of $17. If your country's Play Store isn't selling the new color yet, be patient -- its rollout over the rest of North America, Asia and Europe will continue over the next few weeks.

Where's my free bumper? I just bought my Nexus 2 months ago
Oh well. Even had I had the knowledge of all of this two months ago, I wouldn't have waited.
Ugh I just received my Nexus 4 in the mail yesterday and found out about the free bumper promotion. Called Google today, they told me to return the phone and reorder it for the free bumper, I asked them if i could just get my order refunded $20. They said no, It's ****ing backwards how they want to do this. I already got my screen protector applied and my phone rooted and custom rom installed; I'm just gonna cut my losses and take the $20 hit.
Edit: Might as well try emailing them, I got nothing to lose.
T-Mobile posted on Facebook saying the white one is available through them too in limited quantities. But it says online "Note: This item is not eligible for a monthly payment plan." So you would be paying $427 99 from T-Mobile up front.
Ordered the white one today... Time to sell the black one

I am thinking of getting the Nexus 4 now since it will be my first smartphone and this promotion is too hard to pass up. Any suggestions on which storage option I should pick? I plan to root, install custom rom and just experiment a lot with it. Have the occasional videos and music and some games/apps too.
8gb or 16gb, thoughts? Thanks.

I don't store any media on my device and I have 6.32GB left. All the space is taken by nandroids and apps and stuff. I guess if you're really going to get into flashing ROMs and experimenting with your phone, I'd go 16gb, just so you have to shuffle things from your device to the computer way less.

Okay makes sense, but in regards to flashing ROMS, wouldn't I have to factory reset after each flash and as a result all data would be deleted?

I will buy you a 2015 Amazon Fire tablet if you can root it.

If you are a developer and believe you can root this tablet, I will purchase one for you to do so. My only requirement is some sort of proof of your previous exploits.
I'd really like to get this device into the hands of people who have the skills necessary to get us on the road to root access and possibly custom bootloaders and firmware.
Post or PM me if you're interested and capable.
i love your spirit
and hopefully it works
here are a few things to consider
1) a developer might have allready ordered it
as the second wave of Fire's begins "In stock on October 24, 2015"
2) Fire sales will blow up from now till Dec. 25
so a dev might get one for his wife and kids, and keep the $200 plus tablets for himself
so my final thought is
i personally believe this device will be rooted and unlocked between oct 24th and January 2016
we are the early adopters, and as such we have to wait
Dev's wont be able to ignore this device, it's going to be too popular
the above is just my 2 cents
Peace
Ricci
I'm a software developer at a software engineering firm of all places. Luckily, I just got one of these today from one of our other employees. He ordered 12 of them or something crazy like that.
So we're all running around with them. Unfortunately, I've never done any real android system development, but I think I may start looking into it a bit.
I also cant wait until this device is rooted. A few days ago in best buy i just couldnt say no to a $50 tablet. I knew it wasnt going to be the latest and greatest, but perfect for my planned usage. However, this is my first amazon device, and right out the gate i dislike the amazon launcher.
Also, i couldnt wait to use it, so right to the wifi and update i did, (i fear i cannot get google services anymore, but still trying)
So all you smart guys, lets get it rooted!! Would like to get a CM on here.
