Warning dont factory reset or recovery wipe or do nandroid on ics. Be on safe kernel first like speedmod or goku or notecore before doing anything.
If you flash a no wipe rom all apps will remain and all official ics rom is no wipe.

so i can directly flash my friends note with the notecore? is he gonna loose all his apps installed?
Yes, you can flash directly.
Flashing kernel won't erase data.
Just remember to reset counter with triangle away after flashing custom kernel with PC Odin.
Flashing kernel with Mobile Odin doesn't increase flash counter.

As far as I know the LPY was an issue and as long as you don't wipe data/factory reset in that one, than it shuouldn't be a problem either...I'm on LQ2 and have been on LP9 I think and I even accidently wiped data in LP9 and nothing happend. So you should be safe as long as you're not on LPY and like get the LQ2 or LQ3 version.
ICS is safe with a safe kernel i.e. CM9,franco kernel etc which are clear of any wipe bug present in the stock ICS kernels.Hence, the CM9 nightlies,ParanoidAndroid and other ROMs which utilize to CM9 kernels are safe.
Alteratively, you can also flash to GB and then flash a ROM with an unsafe kernel and then flash a safe kernel via PC Odin. It's recommended to go through flashing GB as it reduces risk. However,do this at your own risk

According to my understanding/knowledge none of available ICS official firmware/ROM is safe. Use safe kernels and ROMs mentioned by warfareonly.

Mostly right. Any AOSP kernel is safe - eg CM9. But then you don't get touchwiz, if you want that.
There are a few Samsung based kernels which have the brick bugs removed. They are probably safe - there have been no bricks with them that I know of.
NEVER wipe or format using stock ics kernel (whether from cwm or within android) if you are rooted.
To be completely safe, either use Odin or from a gb kernel. If you are rooted you don't have to flash a full gb rom - just flash abyss 4.2 and then reboot to recovery (do not reboot the device). Then wipe and flash a cwm flashable from from abyss recovery. There is no danger of the brick bug provided the wipes are done through the gb recovery.

Yes,you are right. The kernel must not be official, has to be custom(and not based on lpy) to be safe.

I am on stock DDLP8 with stock kernel. I am planning to flash paranoid android. Can anyone confirm if following steps would work properly:
1. I flash franco kernel via PC odin.
2. Flash Paranoid Android using CWM.
Or shall I resort to the longer & safer route of going back to GB first & then flashing paranoid android.
Read the instructions given on the Paranoid Android ROM thread. They clearly state to go back and flash from a GB rom...Here, I've posted the info for you
--->DON'T flash FROM ANY SAMSUNG ICS OR ROMS BASED ON SAMSUNG KERNELS
--->Flash any stock GB rom with odin / or any GB kernel ,root deviceand reboot into recovery once again before flashing this
--->Install Rom: http://d-h.st/agf 119.46 MB
--->Install HYBRID Gapps: http://tjohansson.is-a-geek.com/file...0511-fixed.zip
--->Wipe caches, factory reset is a must if you're coming from another rom than CM9
Next time, read.Safety always
The GN I bought recently was already rooted with official UK ICS and Franco kernal on it.
Without me trying to flash or do anything, a simple reboot now won't boot past the Samsung logo.
I've reflashed the UK official ICS rom in Odin, but that did not solve the problem.
I thought I'd try to flash the Franco kernal, but I think I need to put it on to an SDcard and flash via recovery.
The problem is, I don't have an SDcard.
So can a kernal be flashed via Odin? (Do you even think this is worth trying?)
You can only flash a kernel.tar via odin. If it is kernel.zip you have to flash it using CWM.
If you can get into CWM you can mount usb storage to PC and copy file to it.
Sometime CWM see sdcard as internal sdcard so you need to check both.

You cannot flash any kernel through Recovery, because you are unrooted after flashing a stock ICS Rom.
However, you could flash a custom ICS kernel via PC Odin (CF-Root or Speedmod tar). You will get the triangle, but that is easily removed by using new Triangle Away.
OK, I flashed Speedmod, and now I have the warning triangle (Dont care!), and I can get into CWM recovery.
It's still not booting past the Samsung logo. Is it now safe to wipe data/Factory reset?
OK, thanks for your help, guys!!
I'm now unstuck.
(A wipe data/Factory reset from CWM fixed)

Using franco kernal / CWM
I read in the franco kernal thread that is was safe to do so. is this not the case? It seems OK, but have I actually damaged something?
I tried REALLY hard not to screw this up.
Am having a strange error when i try flashing any Kernel on my Stock ICS 4.0.4 Kernel...
steps followed
1. CF Root v5.6 Kernel, Abyss Red Kernel copied to External SD card,
2. Reboot recovery
3. Select Abyss Red Kernel

Finding Update package
Opening Update package

Did not go to PC Odin yet .. I wanted to flash a safe Kernel .. then wipe stuff.. then install Paranoid Android v0.5 (ICS)...
Wanted to understand why i can not flash a kernel ...
You can't flash a kernel in recovery without being rooted. In fact you shouldn't be messing with recovery if you are running ICS. just flash the kernel with ODIN PC and then use triangle away to reset counter. Stock recovery just flashes official updates and files.

humm.. I though i can flash a Kernel without problem... and then Wipe and flash a Custom ROM
i do know that I should not do a wipe while I am on stock ICS Kernel (will be BRICK)
Best and Safest Way to Flash Paranoid Android
Flash Stock GB via Odin Pc
Wipe Cache/Dalvik
Root Device/Install CWM
Reboot Recovery
Flash PA
Flash Gapps
Do All 3 Wipes
Reboot
This method is for a clean install and with this you can be sure of the quality and performance of ROM you are installing, No FC's / SOD's
Shortcut :-
CWM Recovery
Flash Abyss 4.2
Reboot Recovery
Flash PA
Flash Gapps
Do All 3 Wipes
Reboot System
Hope it helps

you will need a custom recovery first...that is why u usually flash the custom Kernel (that includes CWM) in ODIN PC. then, when u are rooted you can use mobile Odin...
Thanks guys.. I did not want to go the full process hence wanted to try this method..
anyway I waited and then went through the know .. Foolproof safe method .. The GB way...
Am on PA 0.5 now ..

Hi harris,
Can you flash gb thru stock odin? of course you can... is it safe? yes it is.
I think the rule of law in flashing any custom roms, just to be in a safe side, is to always downgrade first to stock GB and work your way up in flashing whatever custom rom you would like to flash your phone to.
By the way, don't forget to wipe data once your already in stock GB (before upgrading again to whatever custom rom your going to flash)

sounds like you just need to flash a kernel, i have had this issue before something with the kernel screws up and doesnt boot
Just put your phone in download mode and flash a custom kernel via pcodin. That will be okay. or if its not you have to flash a GB rom using PC Odin. Remember to do wipes after flash

after flashing a safe kernel or after you gone to GB (whichever is the case),yes you can go to CWM and wipe data from there.
Flash prerooted gb rom and wipe cache, delvic cache n data
Not necessary immidiately wipe, most probably you will face force closes on bootup.after flash, nothing to worrt, it will b solved with wipes.
Once evrything fine.after wipe, you can proceed to next step with cwm if you want to flash.custom rom, or with mobile odin if you want to flash stock ROM.

thank you guys i will tell you after the flashing.
Hi,
I have now rooted stock rom 4.0.3 with stock kernel and would like to flash 4.0.4 via Mobile Odin with keeping root and not changing kernel to custom.
I've heard that wiping in stock recovery with stock kernel is dangerous but does it also include wiping via Mobile Odin (all wipes, i.e. wipe data, wipe cache and delvic cache)?
Regards,
Michael.

DO NOT WIPE ON ICS STOCK KERNEL
Just flash it. it will reboot. Now open Mobile Odin again and select kernel (.tar) version of Speedmod or Notecore ICS kernels and flash it. After that you can make wipes as it is safe wiping on these kernels
Cheers
How is it possible that a stock kernel (directly from Samsung) is more dangerous than the custom ones ?
Mobile ODIN's wipe is safe regardless of kernel.
