Rooting problem on latest firmware - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Brief of the problem:
Have updated to latest firmware (2.3.6) but unable to root.
Am using superoneclick for rooting as i am not fully clued up in the technical bits of all the rooting. When I press root, it goes through all the processes and gets stuck at step7.
I have rooted this device before and unrooted it back (If i remember correctly it may have corrupted halfway but phone still works and still has the superoneclick/superuser app in the phone)
Can anybody help me to root this device successfully as i need to remove some stock apps I hate.
Many thanks in advance

I guess you could use Z4root as well on Gingerbread Roms. Otherwise you can do a nandroid backup and flash a clean and pre-rooted GB Rom

Root it using CF-Root kernel.. Download this http://download.chainfire.eu/155/CF-Root/SGS/CF-Root-XX_OXA_JW4-v4.4-CWM3RFS.zip (I suppose you have updated to a value pack - jw4 or jw5), just put your device to DL mode, put the *.tar file in PDA field in Odin (repartition NOT ticked), press start... done.. and you have your phone fully rooted, with CWM, superuser etc.

i wan to root jw5 with out CWM .....
how to do it ?

problem is to root device not to flash a new rom ........:cyclops:

Thanks to all for your replies. Have tried a few of these methods but still no luck. Dont fancy going down the flashing new rom route just yet as just want to root the phone to remove root/factory apps to make the phone run smoother as it seems tolag everytime i open an app or text messege etc.
Any other ways to root simply? sound like the newest firmware makes it harder to root..

yup no simple way to root a device ....
flashing rooted kernel does not sound like anice idea .....
why not just root the official kernel of rom
its surely will be most secure and most stable ...

I know it might sound silly as im not clued up in all this.. but what is a kernal and what does it do?
Can you submit me with a link to official kernals? and possibly a simple way of how to do it.
Cheers

Help ! Kernel version shows 'Unavailable', not able to install even most basic apps

Today i observed a weird thing in 'Settings' > 'About Phone' . The kernel version shows 'Unavailable' !!
This was not the case when i bought the phone. When i bought the phone it was on 2.1 and the kernel version showed [email protected] .... # ... something (Don't remember exactly).
But i updated to 2.2 using kies before few days. Could this kies update be the reason for showing 'kernel version' as 'unavailable' ?? Is my installation corrupt ?? As i bought it used it is possible that he/she may have install lagfix or rooted the phone or anything which may have caused issue during the kies 2.2 update.
Could this corrupt kernel be the reason that i'm not able to install 99% of the .apk even manually ?? The installation always fails with most of the files. I have tried with droid explorer, adb via command line, directly from phone, apk installer app, etc. but I now able to install even simple apps like flash player, angry birds, asphalt 5, asphalt 6, etc.
If your kernel had listed as [email protected] when you bought the phone, then yes, it was a custom kernel, likely one of Chainfire's to root the device.
After the update, I assume you no longer have root?
You could try to flash a new root kernel as described in Chainfire's thread HERE, which would likely solve both the Market problem and the kernel problem.

Are you sure i would be a custom kernel ? I saw a new SGS i9003 on display at a Electronics mall before few days and even it had the Kernel version as root @ ...
And yeah, i don't have root currently.
I want to flash the phone, but the problem is that the 3 button combo is not working on my phone even though i officially updated it to 2.2 via kies. Build is FROYO.NEJP5. Maybe because it is 3 UK branded. I'm thinking of flashing this bootloader update but, just worried because if the bootloader update fails then my phone will brick, i suppose !! If the 3 button combo starts working then flashing kernel and firmware is a bit safe as i can still go back to download/recovery mode! Isn't it ? What do u suggest ?
first and foremost get the three button combo working or order a jig.
Or try 3 UK store .

What's the best way to root stock galaxy s with 2.3.4?
First of all you have to download a 2.3.4-firmware (I'd suggest JVS, it's 2.3.5) and then flash it with Odin (you know how? If no, just let me know and I'll explain it ).
After that just look for a kernel that fits your firmware and also flash it with Odin (PDA-filed) and you're done.

You could post the steps as it's for a friend and I can direct your post to him.
Hey guys I have a related question regarding kernels, posting here to save creating more threads.
I've come from Froyo 2.1.1 with Voodoo Kernel. Only reason I've updated to JVR 2.3.4 is because I've read this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225879 and realised I can have glorious Voodoo sound again on newer firmware.
So I've gone ahead and followed this guide to update firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139050
However I was unsuccesfuly in installing madrooster's kernel, through Odin I semi bricked and through CWM it gave an error. Perhaps because I am not rooted? However I was successful in installing Dark Core 2.6, I read that this had Voodoo sound but upon installing the Voodoo control plus and running it, no controls were available. It said phone needed to be rooted to load the driver....I'm really lost, I need help
Tried to flash kernel - Think I bricked phone
I tried to flash a dark core kernel using SGS kernel app. Phone rebooted and showed funny colours on the screen with a robotic voice giving commentary every now and again. Now just keeps rebooting and showing random colours on the screen. I have not backed up the phone, but contacts etc are on google. Can anyone help?

[Q] Unable to get Superuser Permission for CWM on Galaxy Note

hie all...
i have done all the steps to root + CWM using the CF-Root method using the 'not-rooted-yet.bat'
manage to get CWM and superuser installed but everytime i go in to CWM. i get this message:
'This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-Root v5.0 or newer. It appears you are running a different kernel. Various features have been disabled.'
My purpose is to flash to a custom ROM but i cant seem to get past this rooting part. tried most of the method suggested in forums but kept on getting the same error again and again.

I think this shud have solve your issue, it seems, your kernel updated now. But you didn't do it with PC Odin?
otherwise you may have lose Root
Edit : Oh read you have used kies, I think your device no more have Root.

Yes you are on nonrootable rom.
I giving u guideline here follow it.
1. If you have already any older rom on your hand, then just flash it with pc odin
Then get root + cwm,
After that, you can update to newer rom with cwm.
2. If you dont hav older rom handy, just find last link on my signature 'when other method fail.....' Follow that link, then you will have rooted rom.
After that u can get cwm/ mobile odin and update newr rom with it.

easy question CWM and ROOT

I installed an old firmware [N7000XXKKA], applied ROOT and CWM to it.
now I upgraded my firmware to a new one [N7000XXLA4], by using the CWM manager, and choose KEEP CF-ROOT.
my question is:
did the firmware get completely upgraded? or did the kernel remained the same and I just did nothing
Your kernel will be same old.
You can update it to new LA4 with this
Download , extract n Run I am already Rooted. it will take few seconds

Ok I was afraid staying with the older kernel meant I was giving up performance enhancements (or other enhancements) in the later kernels.

[Q] Downgrading to rootable ROM in order to install custom ROM?

Hi all,
Seems like ICS will be delayed and instead of waiting for it, I've decided to install custom ROM. But before doing so, I would like a few comments from XDA SIFUs...
1.Am currently on:
Baseband ver: N7000DXKL2
Kernel ver: 2.6.35.7-N7000DXLA1
Does that means I'm now on LA1 ROM?
2.If so, i understood that it's not directly rootable, thus needed to be downgraded. Referring to Dr Ketan's information, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997, i would like to downgrade to:
N7000DXKL3 ------ -------2011 December-------- N7000OLBKL2
Will that be...KL3 or KL2?
3.Once downgraded using Odin, will it increase the flash counter?
4.After downgraded, can I just use Zergrush exploit method to root my phone?
5.Which custom ROM is recommended?
Thanks in advance...

1.You hav not mentioned build version, basically that is your ROM
2.You have showned is KL3, but i recommend this to downgrade
N7000XXKL3 ------ 2.3.6 2011 December-------- N7000ODDKL1 --------------------India
3. this stock ROM, which won't raise counter
4.yes, n if you downgrade to above said ROM (which i hav recommend), select ' I have kernel KL1' N follow procedure from thread 'How to Root..."
5.Sorry here, I never tried any custom ROM

Hi ketan,
I received my SGN yesterday and right away the phone updated itself to LB2 (India).
I felt the need to root immediately to shift my apps from my older custom romed galaxy ace to SGN.
I read up your guide and rooted through odin (PC) which rooted my kernel down to the KJ1 version. After the customary reboot everything seemed ok - it showed superuser+CWM in app list. Then the pixellated screen began appearing after the screen off. I could only come out of it by removing battery.
On searching these forums i found some posts on pixellated screen caused by certain custom kernels in SGN. I thought that may be the kernel was being incompatiable with my SGN hardware . Then i downloaded the latest stock rom (LC1 - open europe) and tried flashing the new rom using CWM - but surprisingly the CWM prompted for the CSC file only in the firmware folder. It didnt ask for code and modem files. Still i went ahead with the installation and the CWM installed the new rom with apparently no problems - still the kernel is showing KJ1 after this and again the pixxelation problem is still there.
Iam no expert but i think the kernel KJ1 is the problem
(my baseband version is XXLB2)
Present status
Android version 2.3.6
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7 - ....KJ1 -CL627135
Build number GB.XXLC1
Can i retain my root and upgrade my kernel and get rid of this pixxelation problem ?
Is there an good way to do this ?

If you need a full stock rom you must flash through odin.Flashing through CWM will keep the kernel the same so you have the problem continuing.Flash the rom using PC odin and the problem will be solved
