Hi XDA,
Following History:
Started ICS Stock 4.0.3
I tried to play around with Stock-Email and ActiveSync.
Policies dangled me to encrypt everything.
Encrypted Phone and SD
Experienced it to be too slow
Decrypted Phone and SD
Deleted ActiveSync account
Tried to run a script to remove Policy handling
didn't work
Kies update to ICS Stock 4.0.4
Email icon disappeared from Applist, no way to start
Deleted email.apk and .odex and exchange.apk and .odex + reboot
replaced with modified email.apk from A500+ reboot
didn't fit to screen, so removed + reboot
Tried to reinstall apks from friend -> No icon + reboot
fetched stockrom-image and took those email and exchange + reboot
still no icon available
How to restore the original Email and Exchange application without full wipe?
Where to look for errors?
Would be great if you can help.
Fixed it. Took from wrong rom build

I upgraded to the leaked OS 2.2 Froyo and now I am getting the below issue when I reply to emails. Doesn't happen to EVERY email but several to cause me issues at work.
I am using Exchange only.
I reply to an email and it is recieved but all text I typed is missing and it actually looks as if I forwarded the email back to the sender.
I saw on another forum some other were experiencing this issue but none had a clue how to resolve it.
Anyone know how to fix this? Others seeing this?
Any help would be appreciated!!
???
Is no one else having this issue? Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve it? Do I need to wipe the deivce?
I've had this issue as well when using my exchange.

I had the same issue with email after cognition2.2BETA5.5. It seems that designgears had installed the AOSP email app but removed it in later versions due to too many complaints. I find that the AOSP app is much better then then TW Email apk. I performed the steps below to install the AOSP Email.apk. Replies work everytime without issue.
1.) Get the Email AOSP app from a different rom or make a request and I will happily provide a link to download the apk.
2.) Connect your phone to the computer and move the Email.apk to the root of your sdcard.
3.) Backup your current Email.apk with Titanium or manually copy it to another location on your phone.
NOTE: You may need to backup your phone settings so you can restore your launcher after clearing cache in the final step to avoid having to replace all of your home screen icons.
4.) Using Root Explorer or Astro, copy the Email.apk copied to your sdcard into the folder /system/app/ to replace the current app.
5.) Return to the home screen. At this point you should no longer see an email icon on your dock.
6.) Go to Applications->Settings->Applications->Manage Applications
7.) Clear the cache on the TWLauncher Application.
8.) Return to the home screen and you should now see the email icon has returned to the dock.
9.) Restore TWLauncher settings with Titanium to restore home screen icons that were removed in the cache.
Please let me know if you need the email.apk from cognition2.2beta5.5
Aosp email.API link request
Is there a copy of the email.API that doesn't have the blank reply issue yet has all the features of cognition latest release?
I have attached a working Email apk to this post. Down load it and follow the steps in the post above to resolve the blank email reply issue. Let me know if you have any issues.
I followed the instructions, however, I did not have a backup of twlauncher, so now I don't have an email icon on my home bar
So put the icon back on your launch bar. It is configurable. (doing this from memory, so i may miss a step). Go to your list of apps -> menu -> edit and you can configure 3 of the 4 icons on the touchwiz launcer (you can't get rid of the apps shortcut).

Alright, hopefully you all are still willing to help somebody else out on this issue, as I am in the same boat as gibgib3. I have followed the steps above using the attached email.apk from f13nd0.
The issue I get is that launching email cause an immediate crash of the application, as well as attempting to add a new "Corporate" email account.
I am not an Android development power user myself, although I've used adb in the past sparingly. I really just am clinging to the leaked Froyo build from October, and just want working email (TouchDown is crazy slow and expensive) until Samsung finally pushes out an official Froyo build.
Any ideas here?
Flash a new ROM that has the email bugs fixed.

That is the "nuclear option" that I'd like to avoid. While I have everything backed up with titanium, I already am planning to flash back to stock when the official update comes out, so I'm looking to minimize the necessity to flash a ROM again.
I'm hoping that there is some "tried and true" way to swap out my email.apk with a working version, as the previous steps just result in a "Force Close" whenever I try and run it.
So the solution here, for anybody having this issue, is to remove the existing email.odex file from the /system/app directory, which was associated with the original Samsung email app.
All systems go here.
How do you remove the email.odex file? As it is in the system folder, the file permission is ready only and I cannot delete it. Is there a util in the market that you can download to change file permissions?
Root Explorer did the trick for me.

Does the phone needs to be rooted (my phone has the leaked froyo but do not think it is rooted) for the root explorer to be able to change the permission?
I download other free utils that has access to the file but cannot change the permission in order to delete it.
Yes, it does.

Rooting is the key to doing all "magic" stuff like this. What good is a wizard (user) without his magic wand (root access) to work on any magic (his captivate)?

Okay, I finally learn how to root the phone and was finally able to remove the existing email.odex file. Now I don't have the email icon anymore. I must assume you have replaced this email.odex file as well as the apk file??? I tried clearing the cache and everything on the twlauncher and it's a no go.
My captivate is running CyanogenMod - 7 - 06032011. Few issues until today. After using my phone early this morning, the phone has become inaccessible. My exchange email requires a passcode, and it will not accept my input. I know for a fact that the code is correct--it is the same I have always used, and the same as many other passcodes as well. After much frustration I restored the phone to defaults and attempted to restore device from back-up, hoping it would replace the issue. However, the same issue occurs. Any solutions? Is there any back door into the phone? Also, does anyone know of a way to disable the exchange required passcode?? Thank you!
I found email.apk that disables the security requirement. Now, is there anyway to install that .apk from clockwork? I'd really like to get this phone working, and recover my information. Please help!
If you can allow non market apps just put the apk in your sd card tap the file on your phone and install it

Back up the email.apk using TiBu then delete it using whatever file explorer program you have. After that, restore the email.apk from TiBu.

I know how to install apps. But I cannot get in to the phone bc of the passcode malfunction. I need a way to install the .apk from recovery.
I rooted my samsung galaxy note and then installed RocketRom V7. I then installed Kalagas Mixed theme for better looks.
I wanted to change the contacts and the phone looks, so I downloaded these apks from galaxy note apps and themes forum
and copied them in /system/app using root explorer in ROM Toolbox utility.
I made copies of Contacts.apk and Phone.apk before overwriting them.
Unfortunately, now I dont see anything for contacts and phone icon at the bottom of the screen and google search app
is not searching any of my contacts. I changed the permissions of these apps to 644 also, but nothing has changed.
Fortunately I have GO Dialer installed and I can make cals.
I tried replacing contacts.apk and phone.apk with the backup, reflashed RR V7 ROM after cleaning cache and dalvik chache. Nothing has worked.
How should I go about it?
any suggestion would be greatly appreciated
Afaik, from experience of trying alternative diallers and contacts and having the same problem, there is no way to restore dialler and contacts apps without doing factory reset. Don't know why. Maybe its integrated thoroughly with the framework or something.
Better get clarification on this though.

I've just been notified that you can copy the apks back to original location if you're rooted although it never worked for me...

I had the same problem until someone posted this apk (can't remember the name unfortunately).
If you are rooted, copy the attached 2 files to /system/app (backup the original 2 files in that folder before copying) and also delete Email.odex and Echange.odex (back them up too if you want to revert to stock again). Change permissions after copying the 2 apk files. Reboot and enjoy!
if i'm not rooted, is there anyway to reinstall the two stock services/apk?

Well, you have to be rooted anyway to replace the stock ones with the above 2 files.

I tried to install the new GMail apk. basically the installation worked, but when the app starts a screen comes up the account isn't synchronized. both options (sync now and change sync settings) wont work.. any ideas?
I am having the same problem. I tried to install GoogleLoginService.apk but I got "app not installed “ error message.

Are you rooted? Do you have googleframeworks installed? Gmail isn't going to run without the proper google services.
What version of GoogleLoginService are you running? 4.0.3 - 4.0.4 or earlier?
also, googleloginservice.apk will not work properly unless put in system/app folder with perm. Rw-r--r--

I'm rooted for sure, everything else works fine. Seems like I missed to download and install the googleloginservice.apk (I got the framework already running because I installed the gapps as described by stopxwatch). tried to install it by moving it into the system/app folder but the installation wont work at all. it starts but leaves it unfinished after some seconds.
ok, finally I got the googleloginservice running by using the one form the caynogen 9 gapps zip. it's version 4.0.3. the gmail sync probs are still there. maybe the device wont work with this 4.2 version at all.

ok, moved back one step and uninstalled the 4.2, rebvootet and installed the 4.1.x via play store. seems to ork perfectly.
Yes, you needed to use all the files provided by stopxwatch and complete the process before you can upgrade to 4.0.3-4; otherwise everything will break. I tried it before.
