Very cool! Great idea.
Great idea, glad I kept my box.
Same here I always knew that a box with magnets should be held on to....Magnets I tell ya!
Was I dense not to realize box was meant to become a stand??
Wish it could do landscape too tho.
Current project is a rubber flip cover with magnets to hold in place and when rolled back will stand Nook at downward angle to avoid glare when on gym treadmill ...
Sent from my Nook Color thanks to the contributors at XDA forums.
Wow, I can't believe I didn't put it together that it was a stand. Lame on me, awesome on you. Thanks
OMG....put the nook color box in the garbage just 2 days ago. Have my son out searching the trash bags right now!!!!!
Phew!!! He found it. Garbage would have gone out tomorrow morning.
Heh...go figure, free stand for our NC? Think I still have it around here somewhere....
I'm glad I saw this, that is a genius idea right there!
This is awsome. Thank god I still have my box. Thnx for the idea.
You have to wonder if B&N just assumed everyone would realize it was a stand. Maybe something for them to add in their ads?

Great i second everyone's posts, and will be transforming my box tonight.
If you want to make it so it can do landscape just cut notches the length of the foam rubber fingers on both sides of the box and cut the finger part off of the foam and your all set.

Yep exactly. The stand also works for ipads in case anyone was wondering.
How did I not think of this. B&N really needs to make a legit dock though. I would buy it ASAP.

Haha, its true. The nook was designed at a place called Fuze Project in the SF Bay Area. They're smart fellers down there.
Anyone know of an accessory that would help my Shift stand by itself, such as when taking a picture? Or maybe a DIY stand?
Thanks!
Never heard of one. Evo users always flaunt their stand like it's a big deal. Never seen the need for one.
The main use I see for the stand that Evo users use it (or any phone with a stand for that matter) for is for playing movies and music. (This is why I have an HP touchpad).
I actually went to breakfast with a friend today that has a Windows Phone 7 on T-Mobile with a stand and tried to start watching netflix.
I then started laughing at him because he couldn't get service and I said hold on let me turn on my "4g". Turned 4G on, got connected and then I said "Oh wait.. I cancelled netflix 3 months ago."
Moral of the story: It's useless. And there is only 1 camera on the phone and it's on the back. So I guess you could DIY a stand for the camera but honestly I just don't find it very practical or see a high demand for it.
Don't let me stop you from googling it further or creating a DIY tutorial though. Never really cared for this feature on my phone. More important than a stand to me is that lovely hardware keyboard.
i do enjoy my keyboard
thanks for the help!
If you look in amazon for tripods for cameras, there's one that comes with a clip that can hold your phone so you can user your camera with the timer mode.
It's been a long time since I got me one but it worked just right.

You could get a car dock that has a suction cup and one of those bean bag things that are used in cars for the gps. May be slightly bulky but would be a fine short stand.
I have a setup similar to this for my car and could use it as a tripod in a pinch.

If you just want it to standup like the Evo does with it's kickstand you can easily modify one of those little white plastic things that come in pizza boxes to do the trick.

Well that should give you an idea of how long I've been messing with phones . BTW still have an unopened pack of cassettes .

Mik Roms Since 3/13/11
i haven't seen one specifically for the Shift yet, and i'm surprised no one has created a case with one built in. hell, i'm just happy the MikShifted-G ROM lets me use the volume button to take a pic lol. pressing the button without looking at the screen was a pain in the ace.
I used an old cd and used a lighter to soften it up to bend it into shape I could work with, I only use it while listening to music.
Got the idea from some DIY site and it has worked fine for my needs.
I found that a PSP-1000 stand works great... unless the app has a fixed landscape and doesn't rotate. However I could just tilt the shift so the usb plug fit underneath and the stand still functioned (if at an odd angle). It doesn't hold the phone securely, so no carrying it around in the stand but it is good enough to withstand a table bump.

Used to find them cheap, used @ gamestop
Seidio also makes a desktop charging cradle that i'm sure could be modified slightly for just about any need while keeping the charge function. Just throwing that out there.

Are all those relatively strong rare earth magnets a good idea? Won't that mess with things like navigation and storage?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
No the magnets won't affect it that way. It's an innovative idea for sure but the way the N7 is held in place is plain ugly! Also there doesn't seem to be any way to fix or hold the top cover in place when it's closed.
I think it's a great idea but not ready for market quite yet, at least I wouldn't buy it as is.
Very clever but ugly. Not sure why you would want to stick your tablet to the fridge?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
i really want one and would get it if it was like 20 bucks but looks like it will be at least 70 which is a no go for me especially since it doesn't look like it protects the corners.
Nope. The front cover, a rather important part, looks like it's got several slits in it to facilitate all of that silly folding.
Ehh I wouldn't be too sure about the internal Compass. The Transformer TF101 had issues with this and magnets.
Pretty slick idea. Looks like a great case but not for me. I hope he sells a lot of them and does well.
Looks interesting but I'll be waiting for some real users review to see if it really works well
Pretty dope!
Clever, but ugly and probably overpriced. For $20, I'd take a second look.
Doesn't look like it adds any protection, but seems like a really nice idea.
Frankly, I would love to be able to stick it to the fridge for recipes when I am cooking.
I went ahead and per ordered it from http://flipsteady.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=5 for 55 bucks. Its not the prettiest case out there but I prefer function over style most days out of the week and I do love all the options with the stand.
I will probably try to put a thin tpu case on the nexus and then the flip steady on top of it for a little more protection. Will review when I receive it.

Ever tried cooking?
I use my tablet when cooking brunch on Sundays, fixing a batch of cheese dip up, etc. Good for all kinds of uses.
Awesome case, too bad its $55 prob get in around $35 or lower ($29.99 would be sweet spot)
Hi guys,
I wanted to buy a tablet stand for a while, but they're either bad or way too expensive, which means that if I want crap, I better do it myself.
The UPS carton from the Nexus 7 was hanging out next to my desk for weeks so I decided to just take it, cut a piece, and make it look like a stand. I did it pretty randomly and it turns out not bad at all. This definitely solves my stand issue. I'll probably improve it a little more by adding some duct tape so it can last a bit more that 2 weeks.
This will literally take 2 minute of your time if you wanna give it a try. I love it so far.

Not bad if you don't have spare DVD cases laying around (that stand is a little more stable and longer-lasting), but edit your pictures and downsize them, they're too big for the forum!
-Ara
Woops, replaced it by an imgur album, thanks
I made one from a dvd case. Thing works awesome. It holds my N7 while in a case too. I often use it at night to charge.
I used a spare Xbox 360 case so mine is neon green.

Cool...I saw that stand at Walgreens and thought it was pretty cool. But they want over $10 for it, and I've already got a $30 stand ( bought for my old ex-Prime ) and another simple silicone stand. But the one you have does tempt me every time I see it
What about this?
I got this for my nexus 7:

Gawd I never thought i'd be shilling for gamestop but for $5 you really can't go wrong.
Sorry for the (gnex) crappy pic but you get the idea, the slots that the tablet fit into are super soft rubber (coated) and it folds completely flat.
Just go around your house and look for an unused picture frame prop.
I just thought I'd share mine.
I still need to trim off the glue, cut off the excess cardboard and paint it.
That's a cool idea. I make one for my kids.

just need some a joystick and buttons and your rockin' a hobo arcade!
Lol this is dorky but its actually something i wish someone had brough to my attention.
While you're sitting at your pc, or hunkered down watching a movie I found that putting my wallet on top of my nexus acts like those fancy smart cases. then i don't ever have to push a button, i just lift my wallet... SCREEN ON.... put my wallet down.... SCREEN OFF!!! obviously its the built in magnetic sensors meant for their cases, but i hate cases, and so if you have anything you carry around regularly that has a magnet, it just slightly more convenient
Hmm this seems to be interesting. I remember seeing those "surfaces" of slim magnets in a shop few days ago. If you buy those, then you just need some deco on the top if you'd like (I'm thinking of using an old T-shirt with some cool pic or writing on it), glue it on the top = custom smart case
Great find! I will try and find those
Edit: This is what I mean, but a little thinner, and of course bigger to fit the tablet. This is a magnet I have on a fridge. I can't test it however since my N7 hasn't arrived yet (expecting it in a few days).

Considering you're not using a case... I'm going to be blunt and say what you are doing is incredibly stupid. There is NOTHING convenient about that, instead of SIMPLY pressing the button on the side you now have another object which isn't even attached to the tablet to keep track of and move around, instead of SIMPLY pressing a button.
HOLY CRAP WHY!
Yes I know that, but what is wrong with keeping it covered? Protecting from dust, or for deco? I don't think anything is that useless, especially these DIY creative stuff, and yes I'm going to be blunt and say that your post is incredibly stupid and pointless
Why don't you take your nexus 7 and look at it... compare the amount of physical buttons to your phone 3 years ago. Heck compare the amount of physical buttons to the galaxy s3 that came out mere months ago. you're being narrow minded if you honestly can't see the value of anything that would be an effective alternative to a hardware button.

The sensor is under the glass... you can't see it. What are you protecting it from?
How is putting a magnet or a magnet in your wallet on your phone creative? How is that any better than pressing a button on the side of the phone? How?
Taking full advantage of the sensor is using an actual case or cover instead of having to take a i
magnet off and on it. Hey guys! I put a Apple sticker on the back of my N7, that is creative!

I have a Blurex case for my htc flyer. The nexus version is a "smart" case (has a magnet) . You can pick it up for $15. Check amazon.
You can find reviews on amazon and in xda nexus accessories forum. If you want something high end, use smart case as your search terms in the forum.
PS Blurex has at least 2 models. I prefer the slim case.

I'm failing to see why everyone is attacking the OP. If you don't think its convenient, don't do it. If you think it's a stupid idea, don't do it. We all live in free countries, right? OP was sharing some information, and a button- sized magnet sounds like a pretty cool idea for people who don't use cases
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk 2
This was fun lol. I'd like to refer all aformentioned haters to the 4th word of my post "dorky". I knew full well this would only be helpful to a very small few people who carried a money clip with a magnet in it, or i guess those who just carry magnets out of habit. But i'd like to explain the physics behind why i though this was easier.
physical button method:
as we all know a force applied mandates an opposing force, especially to remain static. so what it comes down to is you having to pick up your nexus 7 because the button is slightly underneath the bezel, and if you have big enough hands squeezing it, thus applying equal and opposing forces to turn on your screen.
Wallet/button magnet method:
picking up your small wallet, which weights less than your tablet by many times, this reduces overall work required, is accomplished in a bit shorter time, and probably leaves a smaller CO2 footprint on our environment (i just watched a ted talk).
Thanks for all you who could just enjoy a friendly tip and not lose your heads over it. There are litterally thousands of threads just in this nexus 7 forum that are even more useless than what i poted
Also i have a strong dislike for cases on my devices, but I will admit i've never been more tempted than by some of the ones you guys shared, much thanks for the heads up!
