Question about "optimization" during CM10 update - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
When I upgrade CM10 from nigthly to nigthly after the 1st boot I got a message saying: "Android Upgrade, Optimizing Applications".
I had the same behavior on CM9. On CM9 I thought it was related on moving files into the /datadata partition app by app.
However on CM10 we don't nave /datadata anymore..
I am therefore curious to know what is this optimization and how can I found more about what happens during the upgrade process.
Thanks a lot
M

[Q] Phoenix ROM vs Cognition?

I'm currently using the latest Cognition rom on my captivate. I'm thinking of switching to phoenix rom because of the themes that are available. However, since I'm relatively new to roms, I cannot decide if I should switch. Can you guys give me some pros and cons of switching?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Well what kind of themes are you looking at? Cog has some cool ones.
I was thinking of a black theme
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Look up Darkness v2.5 in Themes and Apps.
I tried flashing that using CWM two days ago, but it made my phone freeze every time I unlock it. It then proceeds to automatically turn off the screen and back on again, repeating the freezing.

Go with firefly ... It was made by the same dev team that made phoenix but has an awesome app with a lot of themes (including a black ang white one) and mods that you can download directly from there. Super convenient.

Did you clear cache and Dalvik?
Also, look in the Torch thread at post #2. Monochrome theme there is all black and white and *SHOULD* work with Cognition, as both are KB1 based. Worst that can happen is you're put in an endless boot animation, but even that probably won't happen.
How do you clear the cache and Dalvik?

In recovery ... Cache is in the main menu. Dalvik is in the advanced menu.
Note: after doing this the next boot will take a LONG time. Don't panic it's normal it's rebuilding those caches you just wiped.
Ok thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Nope, still no luck. I cleared all the cache and Dalvik cache then reflashed the theme. However, it still did the same thing, which is freezing whenever I unlock the phone, then turning off the screen and repeats.
Any other themes that support cognition v4?

Upgrade from CM10 to 10.1...play store not working???

Hi everybody! Thanks a lot in advance for your support...really helpful!
Well, after a while eventually i tried installing C.M. 10.1 on my gorgeous CM10, for a boost of coolness and the sw improvements, but had some issues along the path.
It seems alla right on the first place, but then i tried and the play store (and some other app like waze) wouldn't work.
So i tried to replace the gapps:
Install them from CWM couple of wipe cache, couple of dalvik wipe...and a reboot.
But then the entire sistem stop working.
What did I screw up?
Did I miss the "Clear data factory reset" step? Was it necessary?
Grazie from Italy guys!!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
Usually clearing the data of the application in settings>apps solves the problem.
R: Upgrade from CM10 to 10.1...play store not working???
...so I was right? I did screw up the whole thing when I skipped the "clear data-factory reset" step?

The easiest solution is for you to reflash the ROM with all wipes its op suggests an make sure the gapps are for that ROM because they can be the cause of problems too

[Q] Stable CM 9.1 not really stable

Hi there. Does anyone else who flashed CM9.1 on their GT-P1000 experienced problems such as:
random reboots
random camera reboots
sometimes turning on wifi portable hotspots causes reboots
random shutoffs
CM9.1 is pretty much a daily driver for my tablet apart from the above unpredictability. camera works, gps works, gsm works, wireless hotspot works, accelerometer works,
what other stable ICS and above rom options would I have? I see some jellybean roms floating around but are any of them suitable as a daily driver?
I am AOKP JB 4.2.2 from Stimpz0r and it is stable as a rock. Everything working as expected.

thanks for the info priyana! such a confident sounding statement. thats it. im flashing that. thanks for the recommendation!
[+] Internal Storage mounting problems - people have reported issues with the internal SD card not being mounted at start-up, this is a bug in all SGT7 device builds, and can be helped by removing your external sdcard at bootup - it is caused by the external sdcard having too many files and delaying the mount at build.

Thisi doesn't look too promising. Does this happen to be a big hassle for you priyana?
I'm also reading cautions about making sure my device is MTD. How would one go about checking whether or not I have an MTD partitioned device? I'm going to flash from the official cyanogenmod 9.1 latest stable build if that is any helpful information
The MTD after April was the same for CM9 CM10and CM10.1
And so is AOKP.
So it should be no problem.
But you still need to perform the wipes, data, cache, dalvik.
If you want for good measure, go to cwm advanced menu, the mount portion, and choose to format the /system as well. This is optional.
Remember to use the latest gapps that is for 4.2.2
Then it is ok to restore all TiBackup of user apps and data.
You do remember how to restock if needed right? Just in case.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Very informative. I can't remember restocking because I haven't stocked my device before haha. I'll read up on restocking just in case. Thanks for the help!
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda app-developers app
Restocking is usually best with overcome method.

Flashed it successfully but some things I notice, first is laughably minor which is the lack of the CRT off lock animation.
Second is that setting APN wasn't possible to be added manually as I was not able to find the "save" button. I had to use a 3rd party app called HiAPN which automatically set the APN for me.
General sluggishness compared to cm9.1 where frame rate issues are apparent when in cm9.1 there was none. Such as scrolling pages in the home screens and navigating google maps. am I doing something wrong? But overall really stable ROM.

Homescreen lags on 20a

Hello everyone, plesase share your expierience of using stock 20x firmware.
I'm using it for over a month and Im tired of homescreen lags, after installing apps, after browsing web, after playng games.
The homescreen lags enormously.
I even tride to rollback on 4.0.3, but ICS misses some features that I used to use on 4.1.2. So, I back on 20A.
I hate homescreen lags!

I did factory data reset from phone menu (not hard reset). Is it enough?
No..Do a hard reset, wipe cache, wipe data and try no to backup anything but contacts rather install apps one by one!(its a boring proces but just to be sure because some apps dont work he same on ICS and JB so you might encounter problems)

Yes it lags I noticed this on stock 20a after doing something and presing home button, the browsing throught home screens, there is a lag any way
After update you MUST do a hard reset! If you do that there will be no lagg... So just do a hard reset and you`ll be fine..

Could lag spikes in games also occur when updating without a reset?

Just for the record, and hoping this may help others,
I upgraded to Euro Open V20A when it came out, at the beginning of april. Did the factory reset/data wipe from the recovery menu, but DID NOT clear the dalvik-cache at that time. The upgrade worked fine but homescreen was extremely laggy.
Now, almost two months later, I tried clearing the dalvik-cache to see if that made any improvement (did not perform a factory reset/data wipe this time, only cleared dalvik-cache); I've been using the phone for two full days afterwards, and it really feels like a completely different device! The homescreen has not lagged once since clearing the cache. Of course, I didn't lose anything (apps, data, configuration) this time.
So, from my experience, after installing the upgrade you absolutely *must* wipe all contents of the phone, including the dalvik-cache. But if you didn't, and like me, did a data wipe but not the dalvik-cache, you can do it afterwards with no bad consequences and still fix the homescreen lagginess. Feels like a new, great phone to me!
Best regards!

Nook HD Restarting or Freezing at Random.

I have a Nook HD running CM 10.1 - 20130801 UNOFFICIAL -hummingbird ROM and [email protected] kernal. For the last month or so I have been getting random freezes and restarts. I keep downloading updates but they won't install.
Is it worth staying with this ROM or should I move to something else at this point? Is there one out there with Nightlies? I have attempted to go through the ROMs section but there are so many different ones there its very confusing.

Is there a particular way to factory reset? Or do I just go into the settings on the tablet and do it from there? I am familiar with phones but not with tablets of this nature.
Also, are there no Nightly ROMS for the HD?

A full wipe generally means a factory reset with CWM. That wipes /data, /cache, and dalvik. But it leaves intact your /sdcard that has your media files. And yes, that is usually done before rebooting from CWM either before or after flashing the nightly and gapps. But remember, if moving to CM11 and associated gapps you must use CWM v6045 or higher.

I think I have a hardware problem. Mine started freezing and rebooting on 10.1.3. I did a factory reset with CWM and installed 10.2.1. After less than a day, it started doing the same thing. If it's not hardware then I've got a very poorly behaving app but tracing that down would be difficult.

Why not;
-wipe/factory reset
-install the latest nightly (No Gapps)
-No extra apps just bare bones vanilla cm
-use it for a day browsing, checking out vids
-all goes well after one day start installing your apps one at a time
Narrow the issue down...I would figure if its having those issues even with a bare bones install then perhaps you do have a hardware issue but I doubt you do

During the initial setup, after you've entered your gmail account info, there is an option for you to Restore from Google servers or something (can't remember the exact wording, sorry)? Uncheck the box and that should stop the auto download.
sometimes when I forget to untick that I immediately go into the play store and cancel all of the installs one by one manually and usually catch most of them
