Shell Shocker #3, starting 4PM PT 10/28/12.
I had an original Kindle Fire with CM10 JB and it was awesome. Got stolen in a burglary.
I've been browsing the dev section for news about CM10 for the streak. At $119, I might noodle with one just to play.
Any opinions as to whether this is a deal, or pass and wait?
EDIT: This is the 1GB RAM version, not 512.
Good deal. most places I see sell refurbs at $140
Get it while the getting is good...

Yeah, what I said was correct while the Shell Shocker was live. The $135 unit was $119 free ship.
However, after reading more on it, I decided not to grab one.

Afaik a 1gb ram version doesnt exist, there's only 2 mobos (known to exist):
a cellular enabled version and a wifi only version, with the only difference being the inclusion/removal of the mini PCI-E socket.
(The rest of the changes are on the chassis itself and not the mobo)
If anyone actually got one of these "1gb" ones, could they report back?
It's possible that dell secretly released an uprated 1gb ram version, or that it's simply a misprint.
There is no 1gb version. End of story, TheManii.

Its been a long, long time since we first clapped eyes on Acer's Iconia Tab A100 tablet. The company unveiled the slate last fall, at a special event in NYC, and showed it off again at CES. It was scheduled for launch in May but delayed due to compatibility issues with Honeycomb. Since then, Acer hasn't exactly been itching to tell us when the 7-inch A100 is going to hit stores.
Today, things changed. Engadget cites an anonymous tipster in reporting that an email sent out to Acer retail partners says the tablet will launch in August (which, in case you hadn't noticed, starts on Monday). The A100 boasts Nvidia's Tegra 2 chipset, a 7-inch 1024x600 display, 512MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage and Google's Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb) OS.
The A100 joins the A500, Acer's 10-inch offering that launched in April of this year. Word on the street is that the A100 will retail for $300. The A500 currently retails for $400 on Newegg.

Don't forget that this is the only unbrickable tabby.
I am still waiting to see what the battery life is on this thing. If the reported 1500 mah is correct, it would probably only last around 2-2.5 hours with wifi and everything else running. If this is the case, then why not just buy an Asus eeepc for around the same amount of money and more features and not have to be stuck to a power cord most of the time?
If this has a GPS built in it might be a good buy. GPS is the only thing I miss with the Nook.
Battery comparison:
Nook Color: 4000 mah, maybe 9-10 hours
Samsung Focus: 1500 mah, probably 5-6 hours because it is a phone.
Whats-its-face tablet with 1500 mah: 3 hours if lucky.
Honeycomb on a 7" screen? ver. 3.0 no less? I'm not sure that I buy that part. I do not think Google is promoting any version of Honeycomb on screens under 10".
Just my 2 cents worth....
The quality of the screen is going to be a big factor. That along with the battery life will determine how decent of a machine this is compared to the NC.
I think the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be the first one i consider upgrading too(now that the touchpad is out and less than stellar). Although the hardest part about moving past the nook is that i use the reader software as much as anything else.
Vizio VTab is Awesome
Had bought a Nook Color & rooted it, CM7, etc... Just took a chance on the Vizio ($329 at Costco). 8" of goodness with a Cortex A8 running at 1GHz, real buttons (they rotate as you turn from portrait to landscape) and three stereo speakers (also rotate as above), 1026 x 768 capacitive display
and I can't find much bloatware! Takes up to 32 GB SD Card
Tried to root with Gingerbreak and Z4Root - no joy yet. I may have to do it the old-fashioned way.
And it has the Nook app in ROM!

Wow these do look pretty cool... I have an omap4 pandaboard... will be neat to see these in tablets. The omap4 stuff going into cm7 will be pretty helpful for these things...
250 GB hard drive? Do they mean a real spinning hard drive? I can't imagine... must be an SSD-- but 250GB will be insanely expensive. [Update: Just checked, it uses the "momentus thin"]
Code:
5V start max current 1.0A
Average idle power 0.66W
Average operating power 1.30W
Average seek power 1.60W
So what will the battery life of those things be..?
Interesting. I really haven't paid any attention to what's coming...

Acer A100 Now in stock..
It's now in stock at Superbiiz.com and on eBay (If I had to guess, the sellers on eBay are in with the same bunch at Superbiiz). Between $345-350 shipped either way you go, but from what I understand it should be selling for $300 or less on the official release date, which is now moved back to sometime in October. Thinking seriously about jumping on one just to play with it, but it seems kinda silly as I have my NC and my Acer A500 already. I've been pretty impressed with my A500 so far, so I've got high hopes for the A100. I'm looking forward to seeing a review discussing the battery life, that's the only thing that concerns me. I'll probably get a 7"-9" tablet later on this year, looks like there are going to be multiple options out there.
You still can't beat the NC though... unbrickable, the perfect size, and you can pick one up for under $200 sometimes.

I stand corrected. I had thought it was this month too, then read a article that came out this weekend that said, "Acer's press release page has officially announced availability of the Acer A100 beginning in October...", then gave a link to the press release. When you open the link the Acer release says "4 Aug 2011 - Acer’s ICONIA TAB A100 - The 7” tablet based on Android 3.2 now available!
The wait is over! The 7” Acer ICONIA TAB A100, built on Android 3.2, is now available on the shelves..."
So I guess it's officially released.
But I'm looking at one of the Vizios now to keep on the coffee table, I can use the excuse that it makes for a bad-ass remote to justify spending the money.
Just saw one at the local Target o.0

Get the Nexus 7. I love my Nook Color but sadly it's Specs have officially been labeled outdated by the Nexus 7. For $200/250 You get a Quad-Core CPU, 12core GPU, 8/16gb of Storage, 1gb RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth(With an actual Antenna), NFC, $25 Google Play credit, Tons of Preloaded Apps, Android 4.1 Jellybean. The list is just pure beauty. If you have $200 to burn then this is THE Tablet to get now. Amazon and B&N just got one-upped Big Time. Nexus 7 ships Mid-July and is available for PreOrder from the Google Play store: HERE

Well, you said full-size. There is the (discontinued) TouchPad, which is 10" or so, and you can get those pretty cheap.
They run CM9 pretty well, I have to say. (full disclosure: I helped port it). My big issue with the touchpad is I'm not a fan of the size, and it's a little thick/heavy.
If by full size, you mean a 10.1" tablet, then your options are very limited. The really good 10inch tablets start at about $350 (the 16GB Asus TF300 can be had for a twenty bucks more than that).
Alternatively, if you're not looking for something cutting edge, then there are plenty of refurbished last-year models going around for less than $300. Acer is selling refurbished A500 units for as little as $229 on its eBay store, and if you keep an eye open on sites like techbargains.com for similar deals that come and go.
(Refurbished might be a bit of a gamble, but it's paid off handsomely for me in the past -- bought my Nook Color that way too. Buying direct from the manufacturer helps though. Just make sure they really are refurbished and not "pre-owned".)
Finally (at the risk of raising the ire of the Android gods, you can also get a refurbished iPad 2 for $319 from Apple, which isn't a bad price either.
But if you could stretch a little beyond $300, and want something new, then I think the Asus TF300 is probably your best bet at the moment. There might be some downward pressure on 10-inch prices with the introduction of the HD models (the Acer A700 is only $450, which is the same price as the lower-def A510, so that has to drop) but I haven't seen anything yet.
I would definitely go with the Nexus 7. I planned on selling my Nook and HP Touchpad to get one.
Nexus 7 would be stunning if Google included a mSD slot. Looks gr8 as is, not stunning though.
Which one would you prefer, the nexus 7 or a galaxy tab plus 16gb wifi only? The last ones are at $237.90 refurbished at amazon. The GT+ will receive a software upgrade, so the only differences will be the ir blaster, back camera, sd slot, screen resolution, NFC (don't know what it is ) and the chipset. Which one would you prefer?

umm...Nexus 7...
quad core Tegra 3 processor, 12 core GPU, NFC (wireless data transfer that is more secure than bluetooth) and a whole bunch more goodies...
plus it comes with 4.1 installed...
all at a low low price of $199...
can't beat it
Several sources say Google doesn't take any margin on the product, so you are basically paying the manufacturer price for the Nexus 7 (and any required warranty by law). There won't be anyone beating that for a while.
Oh, and it weighs the same as the Nook Color/Tablet
The only bummer I see is that adobe flash won't be officially supported (if I didn't misunderstood), but since the N7 may be the next developers tab I think it will be somehow updated by devs.
The lack of sd slot almost made me not to be interested on it but when I reviewed the GT+ vs Transformer Prime reviews and benchmarks I got convinced, the Prime is just to fast. If I get the N7 I will buy the 16gb version, 8gb it's just to little (like the Nook Color's memory).

I personally cant wait for this, because i dont have 500$ to get a sgs3 or htc one x, because i am on contract. I have an old samsung vibrant and it is going on sale for the nexus 7. I have a hp touchpad, but i damaged the processor somehow from overclocking, and now it lags like crazy when trying to use it. I think from people that dont use android, this could be their first android device. I think the phone ui is much better on tablet like this than the tablet ui, i hope i can use the homescreen in landscape though.
I now have a galaxy s3 and a htc x one and now a nexus 7 tablet soon 16gb.

might as well. only $50 more dollars for double the storage space. most other tabs charging $100+ for double the storage space. I'd rather have to much memory and not use some vs. not have enough and finding yourself constantly deleting stuff to make room(it gets tedious fast).

imho, if you can afford the extra cash to get the 16gb you should get the 16gb. Having no expandable storage you will be stuck with what you buy now. (I do have the (16gb on pre-order).
Pre ordered the 16gb model. Nice to go with my nexus s and galaxy nexus
I don't see why people are complaining so much about it. Its a great tab for the money. No hack a rounds to get software you want on it, good screen, good battery size, good tablet processor. Would have liked the SD card slot but I didn't expect it. 7 inches is fine for movies and reading. I spend almost all my time online on my phone, even at home. This will at least let me read PDF files and web pages and whatnot a bit more comfortably.

Well to me if you did not like or did not have a use for the Galaxy Tab 7 the Nexus 7 will be the same aside from the better processor.
But only time will tell really as we cant really tell you what YOU will like
what makes you turn away from the tablets your buy? Is it that your phone is so much easier to use or is it that bezel :silly:

If you do not mind relying on cloud storage, or mainly stream media, read books and browse the Web, the N7 is solid. I will stick with the View 32gb with a 64gb card, since still a nice tab.
I have the TF300 too, so less compelled. Must admit I would have bought one though if had micro sd.

$200 for a wifi tab with only 8gb.I can justify the no camera, the no LTE or even
HSPA+, the 7" form factor, and the no super ips I really want one. But the no SD is a deal breaker and seriously, **** Tegra. I want a quad core krait or even an exynos. And Google's developer device gunning for the kindle fire is a quiet acknowledgment that iPad owns the 10" segment.
I have a 15 " MacBook pro (for school) my old laptop running Windows 8 just for fun, then I have a Asus transformer tf101 with dock for portable productivity, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" , and Samsung Galaxy s II . I will probably sell the 7"Samsung since its only dual core and has the 10" tablet UI which really is not great on a smaller tablet. So I am really excited about the "hybrid UI" as Google called on the nexus 7.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using XDA Premium HD app
What the OS needs is a TON of installed user base, so that developers get rewarded for the time, in a way close to the iOS. Selling a lot of quad core systems for $199 will hopefully show numbers of installed base that wake some people up. If it sells as well as it should, your going to want a Tegra3 device at that resolution because that is what everything will target.
For example, I saw a post that one of the game dev's who have ignored TFP compatibility is now saying they will be developing for the N7.
I expect my TFP 201 to benefit somewhat from the sales numbers this should do, given the hardware is basically the same. Also given ASUS made the thing, I would imagine getting JB faster than most on the prime will be a near sure thing.

So i have the old nexus 7, no issues. Ive had it since launch and am currently running PA.
Now im thinking of upgrading just on a whim. My nexus 7 again is very very smooth atm and works perfectly. Anyone see any reason to even consider upgrading to the new one? If theres one thing i would think about it would be the expanded memory since i have the 8 gig version of the original, i find that my storage is very lacking and i cant install like multi-rom/linux very easily with out deleting everything on my tablet. You guys think it would be worth it just for the better resolution, faster processor and larger storage capacity (64 gigs) to upgrade or should i just wait and see how things fair? I know i can use Usb on the go with the old one, but im still considering upgrading just because 8 gigs really isnt alot dispite the fact that i usually am streaming media to my tablet rather then putting it directly onto it.

Asus Fonepad is already a 7" phone. The Samsung Mega specs and quality is low compared to the Xperia Z Ultra.

There we are then, the end of 7" tablets!
I had a 16gb v1 that I replaced with a 32gb v2 for the increased storage, faster storage, and faster CPU. Both units perfect out of the box. I gave the v1 to my son and he loves it. Best upgrade I have ever done. I find qi charging is actually great, and the back camera is handy. I love the Panasonic wireless charger.

My N7LTE arrived just yesterday. It's a nice upgrade to tilapia. Now if only I had source and drivers.

I'm thinking about the new pulled pork sub at Subway. Should I get it, or a classic pizza sub.....or go get a Burger somewhere?

My Nexus 7 is my phone. Just use T-mobile 4G Hotspot when I am out. I am looking at the 4 or 5 for a bit more privacy.
The Pulled Pork looks a little better on the new N7, but buy it from Google, not Subway.

Dude if I was you I would wait until the 2014 Gen. 3 comes out B/C everything that I'm seeing on the Gen. 2 is not that great but to eaches own I'm hoping that the NEXUS 10 Gen. 2 is going to be a home run for us and if it is I might get it G.B.Y.

The gen 2 Nexus 7 is way better than the gen 1 in every way. Period.
The next generation will probably be better than the gen 2 again. That's how it works.
If you want something better than your current gen1, buy the gen 2. It's a decent deal.
