[DIY] Diy Nexus 7 smart case! - Nexus 7 Accessories

I've just made this very very very prototype case with a magnet to automatic turn off the screen. This is really simple, I only placed the magnet in the right position with a bit of adhesive tape. I will cut the cover and place the magnet inside it. I'll update this post! :good:
Update:
I placed the magnet inside the cover, I'll close it later. Now I'm trying to shield the magnet, I placed a bit of alluminium foil with some adhesive tape behind the case but I'll try with steel shim (thanks quocamole)

if you plan on folding the cover all the way back, you might need a steel shim to shield the magnet from turning off the n7 from the back. has to be steel; size of shim depends on strength of magnet. i found the magnets from cannibalized old cases (i.e. blackberry cases) have the perfect amount of magnetism.

In my opinion it might work but it looks like crap. Wouldn't want to show this diy solution to any of my clients, friends or family. It's not like those covers are very expensive. I have seen them on Amazon for like ten euros...

thirst of all thx to Tuxliri for bringing this idea into my mind :highfive:
i know its an old thread but who cares i just bought my nexus7 and was inspired by it (and of course other modders) to go for my first "hardware mod" :fingers-crossed:
and i must confess i really like it and i'm really satisfyed with the result! :victory:
it converted my asus std cover to a smartcase with materials i had at home and it was really easy :cyclops:
used materials:
- ring magnet from spare ear headphones (broken up - it looked like the magnet in Tuxliris pics)
- felt pads used to protect my parquet floor from scratches (see picture felt_pad.jpg)
felt pads work wonderfull for this purpose, i thought about using a large felt pad for the whole screen area on the cover
this would better hide the magnet and would also conserve the screen somehow
well, lets see whats the next devil that will ride me
so keep on modding folks! :good:

You are just asking for a broken screen doing that. Creating a pressure point is never a good idea.

thanks for bringing up this point mate :good:
you're right that it creates a pressure point
might be an issue when the nexus gets transported squeezed between other things in a bag
for a perfect result i would have to carve the magnet deeper into the cover
well i'll think about it

I purchased this case for £6.95 form AMazon yesterday and it came today. I wanted a thin case that offers as much protection as it could, and I believe this is that case. THis case is listed as $35 on thier website, I just wanted to say I dont think that it is worth that much.
The case has a hard, plastic structure with a layer of Brushed Aluminum on the back. This gives it a cool touch and a very nice texture. All cutouts are very well aligned and I have had no issues with audio or pressing the volume or power buttons. The pogo pins are also exposed which is nice as this is the only case I know where they have allowed them to be open. Overall the case is very good very slim and offers quite a lot of protection.
THe negatives come in the way of the design though. The huge poetic logo on the back of the case (see images) may put some people off as well as the bottom and top silver plastic being exposed on the device. Also the case is not that grippy to hold. Meaning it is very slippy to hold and may fall out of your hand.
Great case at a great price.

Here's my video:
Great review man... does it provide any protection to the front? What I mean is if you put the nexus face down does the glass touch the surface at all?
Thanks for putting up the review. That has got to be one ugly case though. I want my branding to be mostly invisible. That one screams LOOK AT ME!!!!! :silly:
Just recently got my nexus and I've been looking for a new case. I just recently dropped my nexus on concrete and the top right corner the I guess bezel or the silver gray material came off. Am wonder ok by if this case would provide decent protection against such a fall

[REVIEW] GMYLE (TM) Black PU Leather Cross Pattern Slim Sleeve

As someone that isn't a fan of cases for devices and prefers the naked feel of the device but still wants protection for their tablet I went looking for a sleeve that I thought looked good and would give me some protection. So as a result, I ordered this sleeve on the 22nd of September and received it today (October 2nd). And I must say it is nice quality. While it is not real looking leather (one that you would find on a jacket or sofa), the quality of the sleeve is still nice and it doesn't look cheap at all. If anything, I would just classify it as a nice quality looking and feeling felt. I also did some tests by bending it and twisting it and there was no cracking of the material.
As you may or not be able to see from the picture below the only part of the tablet that is visible is the centre part of the tablet where the camera is located but that is just for convience to slide in and pull out the tablet.

I would upload more pictures but I think the pictures up on amazon do showcase it quite well and accurately but I thought that a picture of the quality of the material deserved a more closely looked at picture.
Here is the url for the sleeve, although if you were to look up the product on ebay you would find it for about half the price. I only got it from amazon because I had a gift card that I wanted to use and since its free money then why not right?

So all in all I really do like this sleeve and I apologize on the crappy review (it isnt my speciality) but I just thought it be something that people might be interested as an alternative to getting a case for their tablet. If there is something that I didnt cover that you would like to know about more then ask away and I should be able to answer it for you.
Thanks. I have had this one on my shortlist as I want a simple sleeve. It doesn't have any kind of a sleep magnet in it though does it? Do you find any problems with the device turning on while in the sleeve?
I can't see that being a problem, with the recessed button and the fairly stiff looking material of the case it's not likely to happen.

No there isnt any magnets in the sleeve. And no it doesnt turn on accidentally while in it. Although after a bit of testing of it, it is possible to press the power button through the sleeve. But I was trying to do it intentionally just now. If you are to just carry it around normally then I wouldnt suspect the power button being turned on by accident since the material is somewhat stiff.
Thanks. What's the inside like? The pictures look like smooth tan PU but wondering if it any kind of a softer or microfiber material.

Here is a picture attached. The material is white inside if the picture doesn't look white to you. And it feels a little more coarser and textured than a microfibre cloth I'm guessing to help from the tablet not slide out as easily. But with that said it is still smooth and won't scratch the screen if it doesn't have a screen protector on it.

I wish it had a magnet, but I impulsely bought this
for those wishing to buy off amazon.com (US) here's the ASIN: B008V9SJVO

This would be the perfect "thin case".

I have a Samsung flip case which I love but the lack of drop protection is disconcerting. What would be awesome would be if someone made little clear gel "corner bumpers" that you could just fit over each corner and not all the way around the phone. They could be small and thin with a little stickiness on the inside to hold them on. It would be the ultimate "thin" case as it only protected the corners (the trouble spots).
Does such a thing exist?

Sugru -Different colors, but no clear.

or make your own and don't put any coloring in it. I think it will be as clear as silicone gel.

Thanks but I am looking for something premade and clear. That would look pretty ghetto.

mine doesn't look perfect, but it's only as ghetto as your art skills. get someone else to do it for you. It's not just silicone so not sticky after it sets.
It's the best drop protection you'll get on anything thin. plastic just transfers energy to the screen, rubber on the sides just adds bulk and there doesn't need to be anything on the back in most cases.
In reality though, most cases look ghetto compared to the gorgeous phones we get new and then cover up. My brother's iPhone bumpers are 5th or 6th generation Sugru, so he's getting pretty good at shaping them and they are only raised about 1/16" on the ends but a bit more for the face.

Wouldn't those just fall off if you dropped it on one of those corners? What holds that stuff in place, can it be removed without damage to the device? Residue, adhesive?

[HowTo] Convert the original Asus Nexus 7 Case into a Smart Cover

Hi,
About 2 weeks ago i bought the original asus case for the nexus 7. Unfortunately it is not a smart cover. But with a few mods you can easily convert it into a smart cover which uses the sleep/wake function of the Nexus 7 tablet.
This article is a short tutorial how build such a case without spending a lot of money ...
So, first you should think about a small, thin magnet. I bought some cheap K315 AKG headphones ...

... and saw that the box has 4 magnets. You can see the small round black magnet in this picture.
This magnet is really thin but its still too big. So, just break it into small pieces and take the best one. Afterwards sand it (in german: abschleifen) and stick it on the case. You can see the right position on the following picture. Thats how it looks afterwards ....
... and ....
...and from the side...
So, now you have a working smart cover which activates the screen when the cover gets opened. Typically you fold the cover to the back which would deactive the screen again. To avoid that you need a thin piece of shim steel. I got mine from a beer coaster During drinking the beer i've worked on the coaster and made it as thin as possible. You can see the result on the follwing picture. Make sure that you put this piece of steel on the right place !! You can test it later with your magnet ...
Finally, after putting the Nexus 7 device back into the case, you can fold the cover to the back without deactivating the screen .....
So, thats it. From now on you just need to open the cover and your Nexus 7 turns on
If you've questions, don't hesitate to ask me
I like this. If I was to do it, I would paint the magnet with some rubber paint to match the colour of the case: http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip

Thanks, that's a good idea.
Currently, I am thinking about a more optimized version... The hight of the magnet is so low, that it would be possible to put it to the inner side of the cover in such a way that the magnet is completly absorbed and surrounded by the cover with no contact to the display of the tablet.
Therefore i would need to countersink the cover a little bit for the magnet so that it fits into it. With that solution the magnet would be hidden with no risk to scratch the display. The front cover itself has about twice the high of the magnet. Thats perfect.
But for now, at least the next days, i let it as it is with the solution which i've described in the tutorial. It's a solution with no risk and i could revert it if want to. And it works just perfectly

The Nillkin sounded interesting but as the quick cover, the G2's top and bottom are not protected.
This shell brand Araso is rather sympathetic, protects the phone all around.
This bumper portion surrounding the phone contains magnets to maintain the shell closed.
The window is pretty well thought: plastic rim seems well made and does not lead to the other side (causing streaks less) over there _like the samsung cover-s_ a plastic shield that protects the screen (2 therefore less risks of stripes ).
Because of thickness of bumper you must add a magnet (supplied) to lock the device, I find is not really serious huh: (causing streaks in more) I have a tempered glass so I would see to long, may be put a little round scotch part.
Magnet and the bumper creates space between screen and flap. That's why quick widgets use becomes a little labored, especially for the knock on. I think removing it soon.
Finally the hull is really ... fat lol. At least that is well protected.
So if I had to summarize.
Benefits
Well protected phone
LED apparent
Closing magnets
Good finishes
Plastic screen behind the window to protect the phone
Solid feel
Disadvantages
Locking magnet directly on the glass
Clearance between the screen and the window causing a rough tactile response
thickness
Now pictures!!
The quick widget seems smaller here, but I think it is because I am under G3 rom with 400dpi resolution instead of 480 (original resolution), If I remember with 480dpi the widget goes far beyond the borders
I hope this return will be helpful,
feel free to ask questions or post your feedback!
I am using this one: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HNI2LI6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Only $12 shipped, and it works great. The little wraparound tab keeps it from flapping around too much.
However, the carbon fiber design is the only one I can vouch for the appearance on. The blue one looks literally NOTHING like their picture (vastly different color and texture) so don't get it.
I'm using a cheap "brillant" white case for the g2 made by rock, a little light protection without glass and magnet but the video mode rox !!!
I was hesitating with nilkin fresh with magnet but i read that it was annoying the compass and no video mode & led on this one !
The magnet disturbs the compass? But not the gps?
