[Q] S-ON? S-OFF? Radios? HBOOT? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HERC XC SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.47.0000 (HERO20000)
MICROP-0110
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-2.42.02.10.29
Mar 1 2010, 16:02:39
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 2.42.02.10.29
Kernel version: 2.6.29-ba77cf03
Software number: 2.32.651.2
- Rooted using z4root1.3.0
- BusyBox 1.20.2 installed
- Superuser 2.3.6.1 installed
I'm at a point where I tried to install "recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-heroc.img" using flash_image. Doing so generates the following:
# flash_image recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-heroc.img
flash_image recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-heroc.img
[1] + Stopped (signal) flash_image recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-heroc.img
[1] Illegal instruction flash_image recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-heroc.img
I'm assuming that this is due to the S-ON. I know that you might say that I should look at the Market and install the ROM Manager from there which would then allow me to flash ClockWork recovery mod, but the only ROM Manager that's available in the Market is the one that you have to pay for.
Anyway, this leads us to having to go to S-OFF through the unrevoked S-ON/S-OFF tool. The problem with that is that the current radio on the phone is not supported by the unrevoked tool... Finding an older radio version (2.42.01.04.27.zip) file, renaming it to HERCIMG.zip, placing it on the phone's sdcard (after formatting the card) and attempting to install the radio through HBOOT seems to fail miserably as HBOOT cycles through the HERCIMG.zip file and does not detect the radio.
Not sure what to do at this point. Any help would be appreciated...
1) Do I need to have the phone in S-OFF to install ClockWork Recovery Mod?
2) Why does HBOOT not detect a radio in the HERCIMG.zip file?
3) Why is flash_image recovery failing when trying to flash ClockWork Recovery Mod?

On a side note, I have been unable to find an older Rom Manager apk version for Android 2.1
C:\Users\User1\Desktop\HTC Hero>adb install RomManager.apk
1096 KB/s (2592477 bytes in 2.308s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/RomManager.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK]

ROM Manager does not require S-OFF to be set, so this shouldn't be the cause of your problem. A simple search of the Internet will turn up many sites that offer older versions, like filecrop. If you're not completely stock and might have done some tweaks, you might want to consider running an RUU ROM.

Correct, but, to the best of my knowledge, installing Clockwork mod does require S-OFF to be set...

You can have clockworkmod recovery and be s-on

So what is the purpose of having the phone S-OFF? I thought that with S-ON you will not be able to install any custom ROMs...

If you're S-off and screw something up, you can boot below recovery and flash a hercimg.zip to get you back up and running.
You can flash roms s-on til your heart's content.

ROM Manager runs at a level above the bootloader. S-OFF is not required. You need S-OFF to do system changes deeper than a ROM change.
I was running with S-ON for quite a while, switching among a few ROM's. When I wanted to get deeper access to the system, S-OFF was required so I flashed an S-OFF enabled bootloader.

I thought flashing ROM was the deepest. What is deeper than that that requires s-off?
And I think I read that without s-off, the changes won't stay after a reboot. Please correct me if I'm wrong. So if flash ROM with s-on, wouldn't that be very temporary?

3. Now you can install the stock firmware 3.08.405.3 (RUU or OTA), s-off
for downgrade use old eng s-off xttp://rghost.ru/34168821

adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 of=/sdcard/backup.img
dd if=/sdcard/hboot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

Yes these are vary obvious noob questions and the answers to both of these can be found in this forum by using the search functionality. Flashing CWM or EXT4 is the whole basis for customizing your IncS, so my suggestion to you is search, read and research to learn how to do.
is there and what is the advantage of updating old HBOOT (S-OFF) to new HBOOT (S-OFF)
You should flash the hboot back to ENG S-off if you want to go back to S-ON
For me it worked... thanks
I have updated the phone with the last firmware revision.
Now I have android 2.3.5 and sense 3.0.
Of course, hbtoot 2.0x too and the phone is s-on.
Now, what I have to do for Root my phone (set s-off and install clockwork mod)?

You won't be able to gain true S-OFF (as shown on the HBOOT screen), but you can unlock the bootloader by using the procedure at HTCDEV.com and then you can install ClockworkMod recovery and flash su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to root the ROM.
FreeWolF80, you can unlock the bootloader, downgrade to old hboot, s-off revolutionary and upgrade to 3.08.405.3
Superuser: http://goo-inside.me/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip
Clockworkmod: http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-vivo.img
P.S. The clockworkmod for above ^^, must flash through fastboot.

I'm running VIVO PVT SHIP S-OFF RL HBOOT-6.13.1002 (dated 1 april 2011) with rom ARHD 2.1.1, for what reasons should I upgrade to HBOOT-7.00.1000 (dated 1 november 2011)?
Are there advantages, like it will be possible easier to go back S-ON for warranty reasons?
Inferi0r , this hboot for stock 3.08.405.3
So we have only an advantage if we are still on one of the newest stock roms?
I'm curious to know too, following on from Inferi0r's question. If I'm running a custom ROM already, does this mean there's no benefit with a newer HBOOT?

Actually there are not really benefit from newer hboot..just it will be harder to s-off only..if you are running custom rom already, then it is good enough.

If you succeed please share the PG32IMG.zip file with me. Thanks

OTA 2.3.5 update - can't install, can't downgrade HBoot

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me in my quest to install the OTA update for the Incredible S to 2.3.5, sense 3.0.
I have previously rooted, back in the Summer of this year so think it would have been Alpha or Revoked. Have tried a couple of things to restore S-On in order to run the stock update.
I have tried several methods to flash a new HBOOT, including flashing the OTA from Sense and the bootloader, and have tried to flash a new PG32IMG as well.
Most recently I have extracted a Rom.zip from a working Incredible S/Vivo RUU, and tried to put on the Hboot from this after running the Vivo Downgrade.img - for both of these I keep getting "Can not roll back hboot version" on the bootloader screen after pushing to the device with FASTBOOT.
Since installing the PG32IMG.zip I tried, I have changed to Vivo PVT SHP S-OFF RL on the bootloader. The other details are:
HBOOT - 700.1000
RADIO - 3805.04.03.22_M
eMMC - boot
Other than having S-Off and being rooted, I am running Stock 2.3.3 with Sense 2.1
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I'm going wrong, or what Hboot I can flash to overcome this please!
Is your Inc s locked to a network or did you get it sim free, that could be a problem you might be having. If you went from a custom rom to stock rom did you use the correct ruu to go to rom which is right for your country.
The phone itself is sim free. I used an RUU that was as similar to the OTA update naming as possible:
RUU_Vivo_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.30.405.1_Radio_20.2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03_M_release_199308_signed
elthrawno , i have the same problem?
have a solution??
plzz help...
thank you...

Since you are S-Off using Revolutionary, the Revolutionary HBOOT is preventing you from overwriting it so you won't lose S-Off. If you truly want to return to a stock ROM then you need to follow this procedure:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15732727&postcount=14
I've followed the method on there, but not convinced I have the full SDK suite installed, so might be worth me retrying once I have.

HTC Incredible S 2.3.5 most easiest root

Hello, Iam noob in rooting and there is sooo much information about that, so my head goes burn, my simple question is only - can you recommend me the most easiest way to root my Incredible S? I want to install new ROM. Version Hboot 2.00, android 2.3.5 and never S-OFF, rooted. I have to downgrade HBOOT? Thank you so much
Oh look it's first sticky on the forum! Just a simple read through the first page of the forum might help just sayin'.
Anyways, this seems to be the easiest way to root...it's definitely easy to understand even if you have few to minimum understanding of rooting and flashing.

Since you are already S-OFF, then you should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery in FASTBOOT USB mode. Once you have CWM installed, you can make a 'nandroid' backup of your current ROM, apps and settings. Then you can flash the latest and greatest version of su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.
This will leave your current ROM, apps and settings intact.

Since you have permanent S-OFF, you don't have to worry about whether to unlock HBOOT 2.00.0000 or downgrading to run Revolutionary, etc.
You should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery, you could flash HBOOT 1.13, flash a new radio, etc.
You just need to get familiar with using FASTBOOT USB mode and all of the options that fastboot.exe can do.
I am speaking from experience. I have a permanent S-OFF IncS and even after I run the Android 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 RUU and it upgraded my HBOOT to version 2.00.0000, I was able to flash ClockworkMod recovery and install su-3.0.x.zip and root the ROM. I have also since reflashed back to HBOOT 1.13.

With HBOOT 1.13, ClockworkMod recovery is able to flash a custom ROM in one step. With HBOOT 2.00.0000, after you flash a custom ROM in ClockworkMod, you manually have to extract and flash the boot.img file in the custom ROM's zip file. In other words it is easier to flash custom ROM's with CWM and HBOOT 1.13 than it is with HBOOT 2.00

The only option you have right now for ICS is to run a custom ROM from the Development section and all of those are already rooted.
If you are talking about the official ICS OTA/ROM from HTC, we will have to wait and see if it will be rootable or not.
Once again since you have a permanent S-OFF on your phone, you shouldn't have to worry about. If you install the official ICS ROM and you lose root, you should be able to reflash CWM and then install su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.

No a stupid question because the answer isn't very obvious, but the is a sticky post in the General forum that describes a process where you can downgrade the ROM and HBOOT to a version that Revolutionary does support.

Uninstall BlackRose?

Overwrite it with revolutionary hboot andrun the vivo downgrade on that?
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
And how would I overwrite it with revolutionary hboot? Just install revolutionary?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using xda premium
You can make the uninstall.bat work if you replace this line :
Code:
fastboot flash hboot_1.13.0000_CRC_8a731c6e_0401.img
with
Code:
fastboot flash hboot hboot_1.13.0000_CRC_8a731c6e_0401.img
If you can't boot to a ROM, you can just uninstall via fastboot :
Code:
fastboot oem mb 469010a0 16 0
fastboot oem mb 8d09fa58 1 30
fastboot flash hboot <path to any hboot.img>
fastboot reboot-bootloader
I would also recommend to use another new hboot because the one that is used when uninstalling is 1.13.0000 S-ON. Inferi0r posted some There. You can extract hboot.img from PG32IMG.zip
I haven't found how to uninstall directly the new version of BlackRose but I found that old version can overwrite new version.
So if you want to uninstall new version, install old version and then uninstall like explained before
nonverbose wrote a short guide for it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26909973&postcount=13
Files here.
You can overwrite HBOOT-2.00.0000 S-OFF Blackrose and HBOOT-2.02.0002 S-OFF Blackrose with HBOOT-6.13.1002 S-OFF Revolutionary. You can overwrite that HBOOT with HBOOT-6.13.1002 Revolutionary [Overwrite Protection REMOVAL] and then you can flash any stock HBOOT you want.
So there is always a way back.
Why are there threads everywhere of people wanting to uninstall it? I installed it a few days ago and everything seems to work just like it did previously with 6.13.1002. Am I missing something??

Bricked after uninstall?
Hi!
After uninstalling the Blackrose I got hboot 1.13 s-on.
The fact is that I can't launch the recovery and boot into the ROM.
Not sure what's happened. Everything was fine before that (4ext, s-off, custom rom).
Most of methods require adb (so the phone has to be booted to ROM).
Fastboot also fails to flash anything, obviously, cause it's s-on now.
Let me know if I can provide any useful info.
Any advice? Do I really own a brick now?

Now that you have lost S-OFF, you will not be able to use an unsigned PG32IMG.zip to update the radio and mainver.
You will have to wait until the official 4.10.405.x RUU for ICS/Sense 3.6 is available to download. At this point you will only be able to flash an official, signed HTC RUU/ROM and it needs to be version 4.10 or higher.
Thank you guys!

Nothing special. Please find details below.
I got Nik Aura Rebitth 3.0, 4ext recovery classic 2.2.7 rc5, s-off via Revolutionary (had to downgrade).
Then God knows why I decided to install blackrose (was not really going to install official ROM). Installed with no errors in log. After the reboot the phone displayed 4ext, and it was reinitializing again and again, weird. Then I hit blackrose_IS.exe /uninstall. And that's all. No ROM, no Recovery, hboot 1.13 s-on, mainver 4.10....

Hboot 2.02.0002 downgrade.

Did you read posts 2 & 3 in this thread?
Post 2 tells you where to find the procedure to use. Search in the Development section and also check out the sticky posts that are in this General section.
Downgrade from 2.02.0002 not 2.00

Original poster, did you get this to work ?
I am trying to downgrade from 2.02.0002 and get the following when running the RUU process:-
"THE ROM UPDATE UTILITY CANNOT UPDATE YOUR ANDROID PHONE"
"PLEASE GET THE CORRECT ROM UPDATE UTILITY AND TRY AGAIN"
I notice you are on 2.02.0002 the same, but the link to 'All in One Noob Guide For Downgrade and S Off' actually says 2.00 and not 2.02.
Just wondering if you got the same issue as me and the poster who mentioned the link didnt see you said 2.02.
Thanks
Regards
Nigel

I was working with a user this week that was trying to use the script to downgrade HBOOT 2.02.0002 and it appears that the tacoroot exploit to get temp root does not work on HBOOT 2.02.0002, so the script is unable to run misc_version to change the mainver value to 2.00.0000, so therefore it will not work at the moment for a stock, unrooted phone.
You would have to resort to unlocking the bootloader at HTCDEV.com, install a custom recovery and then root the ROM in order to use the downgrade and gain S-OFF.

Next step: I have used this post to flash the recovery and install the
su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to gain the root access but S- remains ON

To flash recovery from 4ext recovery control, you need s-off. You will have to do the manual way, by entering this command 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'.

If you have HBOOT 2.02.0002 and you unlock using HTCDEV.com you will be able to:
1. Flash a custom recovery.
2. Once you have a custom recovery you will be able to:
A. Root your current ROM by installing SU-3.1.3.zip
B. Flash a custom, rooted ROM.
So I believe that should answer your questions. You may now exit the maze.

Yes, I install the WE WANT ICS v4 ROM and now I have the root permission
At this point, what mean S-ON / S-OFF and what permits?

S-ON/S-OFF is used to reference the Security flag setting in the phone. If you have Security Off, then you can flash almost everything to your phone, including a new radio.
With an unlocked bootloader like you have, you can flash some of the same items as S-OFF with the 2 biggest exceptions being:
1. You cannot flash a new radio.
2. The boot partition is not mounted as R/W when in Recovery mode, thus the reason you manually have to flash the boot.img while in FASTBOOT USB mode.
