Hi!
I need some Android phone that powers on and boots to OS automatically when external power is connected. I heard that HTC phones can do that.
For instance, HTC Mozart behaves this way, but it's not Android. iPhone is smarter than that and boots only if phone was not powered off intentionally (if phone turned off because of drained battery). Latter behavior is ok for my goal too.
Can someone check with Desire C, if it boots into Android OS, pleeese?

OK, you obviously need to know all the details. Here they are.
I will place this phone in the shuttle bus, which is often stuck in traffic jams. You leave the office, and not seeing the bus anywhere you call the driver and he says that he won’t be at the office in the next 20 minutes or so. The best solution is to call before leaving the office and then just read some news on the Internet or do some more work until the next slot in the bus schedule. But this means that bus driver will have to answer calls from 10 people 5 times every evening at least. It is not polite. People understand that and nobody calls beforehand, they just leave the office in hope that bus is there. If there is no bus, younger ones do some hiking, it’s about 20 minutes, and it is 14 degrees F in Moscow now. So some people return back and others wait until the bus eventually arrives, but bus leaves only on the next slot, so you lose 30 minutes.
If people could see in advance that bus is still far from the office and its average speed in last several minutes is not enough to get there on time, they would be happier.
The tracker app will turn off GPS over weekends and on nights to save battery. Still, the original assumptions was that there may be longer periods when sockets in the bus are not powered, so the battery will for sure die. The problem I am trying to solve is that bus driver is not paid for making sure that tracker app is up and running. It’s of course easier to talk him into doing that, but it’s not that interesting for a developer
I was told that some HTC and Sony smartphones can turn on upon connecting charger, I asked guys in the cell shop to test couple of Sony phones and they do not turn on. But people in the shops are not very happy to do these experiments for me, so I tried to ask here, with no luck
Anyways, the current decision is to use old Windows Phone 7 always connected to bus battery. Windows Phone OS seems to be rather stable so I hope I will not have to restart that app too often (unlike Android you cannot make Windows Phone OS to start your application after booting up, so its ability to boot up automatically upon connecting chager is of no use here).
my girlfriend's moto droidx2 boots to os when plugged in. not sure if it helps but good luck

But the bus can't swim
Well good luck at finding one that does boot up when plugged in.
There's very few that do since 99.9% of people plug phone in to only change and phones charge quite a bit quicker when turned off

My phone turns off by itself when it is charged ! 5-6 times a day, maybe even more
I can't turn it on after this. !!!
After this I can turn it back ON only I connect it to the USB cable !!!
(it dose not need time to charge, just to be connected to charger or USB. After this it may work for 2 hours and just go off again)
I searched the forum, and not only, but had not find any posts with the same problem
This phone is my "life" - I can't go to T-mobile or smthing, don't live in USA ... so relay don't know what to do... I will be glad if you give me some tips
P.S. the phone is not rooted or smthing, I even tried to delete all apps I installed to see if this will help.
Your battery is probably jacked up. Buy a new one. Then after that root that G1 and put CyanogenMod 5 or CyanogenMod 6
For sure your battery. There is a post on this same q&a section about this same issue.

I was thinking about the same thing, but:
I need to plug it in only to power up (I don't leave it a second for charging - it is all ready 80% or more or less dose not matter) - the battery is holding the charge, and the discharge rate is at a normal speed
The problem is that: it shuts down from time to time - and when this happens I need to plug it in order to turn it back on
If I turn it off myself - I will be able to power it up with no problem
I had the same problem until I actually took a look at my battery and saw how swollen/warped it had become. Take a look at yours and if your battery seems the least bit swollen, its time for a new one. I ordered mine today.
K thanks for your help going to look on ebay for a new battery...
Any tips on what to look for? I see some with 1400mha and even 2400 (but they are too bing for me - have to think about it)
I just picked up a standard battery off eBay for like $5 since I plan on switching phones this December but I saw phones with double the life for like $10

Hello guys, we recently got our first imac and the store threw in the cheap APC 350v UPS unit with the purchase. (the power went out and the imac was alive for around 15mins which is whats advertised on the box)
Now I want one for our windows desktop which has a 350 psu, I believe it consumes more power than the imac so I'm thinking of getting a bigger one for it, which do you guys recommend?
also I would like to ask something power related, before getting the mac I had a dell desktop (lasted 4 years and then had a mobo failure) and I remember that if I touched its case, I would receive a slight electric shock.
same thing happened with the imac yesterday, as I reached to plug my external hard drive in the back, I received a slight shock when my chin touched the aluminum. should I be concerned about this?
Sorry for asking too many questions
By UPS do you mean PSU?

UPS - Uninterruptable Power Supply (i.e battery backup that takes over when mains power goes down)
I'm not sure about the shock.. but I use this UPS in my office, and I've never had an issue.. Then again my power has only gone out a few times, for no more than 10 minutes.
CyberPower Standby CP550.
I'd post a link, but I can't yet.
Never had any issues though, and neither have any of the other properties using it. (Which is why I bought it..)

IF you're looking for a UPS with more run time - look into the volt amp (VA) rating of the UPS. Some of the best value UPS's out there are the CyberPower Adaptive Sine Wave UPS - CP1350PFCLCD UPS 1350VA or CP1500PFCLCD UPS 1500VA. There are a couple reasons why these are superior - 2 usb charging ports which are battery powered, automatic voltage regulation (over/under regulation) and they produce pure sine wave which is compatible with the higher efficiency power supplies (PSU) (ie 80+bronze,gold, or platinum) which means you don't have to worry in the future about if your psu will work with your UPS. I use them with my home built PC's as they were not compatible with the cheap 1500VA APC I had previously (black friday deal from a couple years back).

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I'm pretty sure you have no freakin idea what you're talking about... There's no such thing as a voltamp, it's called a watt.
Then again, not sure. Maybe UPS companies made up something to pawn off their crap that has no valid use in this day and age.

There is a slight difference
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volt-ampere
UPSs are only meant to keep power running until the hardware has safely shut down, not run instead of the mains.
I have one for my PC upstairs, it's an APC750 if memory serves.
I use them in a professional capacity with work, and unfortunately many people who install them don't know how to configure them or connect them up.
So many client sites I've been to where they have things like monitors plugged in, or don't have the switch connected to a network controlled UPS so it can't then tell the servers to start shutting down.
Basic ones will just have a serial or USB connection to control one computer, telling it "power's out, start shutting down now"
You want to time how long your computer takes to shut down, then set the UPS to take a few minutes longer before killing the power to it's socket.
If you're prone to minor power outages, where it cuts out for a few minutes and then comes back on, then with the decent UPSs you can configure them to delay the shutdown message for longer.
I was using my Nexus 7, playing a game. It then static-screened and hissed for 2 secs and then died! It was charging through PC USB.
It won't power up anymore.
WTH?

You may have overheated it. Wait a few hours and try again. also, depending on the USB charging, the charger may not have been able to keep up with the battery drain of the game and it shut down for a low battery. Use the OEM charger whenever possible.

If the device actually made a "fizzle" sound then I recommend sending it in for a replacement. Sounds like a battery leak. Was it overclocked?

I had the same problem yesterday, my battery was very low and I was using it while plugged-in a PC USB.
I was playing reckless racing, i left it on the desk for awhile when I went back to my PC. the device was on, but all of a sudden it fizzled and static screened.
I freaked out and unplugged the USB. then the device shut-down(turns black) immediately. The device was a bit hot on the back bottom. I tried to turn it on, NO GO. I plugged it in the OEM charger, NO charging screen. tried turning on, still no go.
then i look in xda. and found out someone said to hold the power button for 30s.
So, the device was plugged in OEM charger. I sat it there for like 5 mins first. then try to do the 30s.
It boot up again on like 35, or 36 second i counted.
I bet it was a low battery problem, since charging it from a PC doesn't provide enough power.
The method solved mine, and i hope it solved yours too.
Gd luck!!

I meant to say a I heard a fizzling sound when it static screened. Almost like the sound you hear with TV static but more... fizzy? :silly:
lol
If you heard a fizzle I'd definitely still send it back in for RMA, better safe than sorry down the road.
just looping the sound file from the game before shutting down not a issue. watch that battery icon in the future.
playing nova 3 on full 1600mhz oc N7 did the same on a freeze and reset. (; have to find the settings that work right. nova 3 1500mhz with the gpu oc at 500 screams and is stable on my N7. spiderman became a fun game after the kernel flash.
Just to say it again - plugging the Nexus 7 into a PC USB port will not keep it charged during high current usage.
If you drain the battery completely - don't expect any display until you have charged it for probably an hour.
Funky noises from your game when you flatline the battery is no cause to return it.
Use a dedicated charger for game play, preferably the one that came with it.
Didn't fizzle here, just turned off and no matter how long I held power button or left charging on mains connector or on PC, the tablet was completely dead. Returned to Argos and got refund and now waiting on another Nexus 7 to be delivered but via Tesco direct this time.
Fingers crossed this one lasts a lot longer than the hour the first one did

I had this exact same problem except mine wasn't plugged into anything and my battery was not near empty. When I finally got it booted back up it was at 27% so for me it wasn't low battery. I only ever use the charger that came with it - unless I'm connecting it to my laptop for a few minutes to transfer files, etc.
This is my second Nexus 7. The first one got returned because it had problems with the touchscreen on occasion. It actually did do this static/fizzle/crash once or twice as well.
I wonder if the static/fizzle/crash issue is being addressed in hardware and/or software with a newer version of either one?
Pls tell me Asus representatives are reading these threads in xda. I can see lots of problems with the device. Google should take serious actions on this

Maybe, but I had more than a quarter of my battery left and had very similar symptoms. I think it might be related to heat generated by gaming. Maybe with low (but not out of) battery, maybe not. The touchscreen issues I experienced on my first N7 seemed to only occur after hard gaming. Maybe there's a heat dissipation issue? (Wild speculation)
Mine did exactly the same last week, thought it had died altogether but holding the power for 45 seconds sorted it.
I need help too.
My N7 turned off when the battery ran out. So i plugged to charge through PC USB and immediately when that great charger icon apear in the screen i pressed the button power, and so it go black. No more signals. Dead... No charge, no turn on anymore.
I tried to hold the power button for 30s a lot.
I opened the N7, unpluged e pluged again the battery. Nothing.
I let it charging, in the OEM charger, with OEM cable, all the night, for more than 12 hours. Nothing.
And it has a "fizzle" sound. It can be heard better when its open.
When i disconnect the battery the sound stop. If i connect the charger, even without the battery, the sound come back.
When i hold the power button for 30s the sound stop for about 3 seconds, and then restarts.
The Windows manager device recognizes the N7 as a weird "APX" (image attach).
In from Brazil, so for now will not be easy to return to google.
Any ideas?
Thx in advance
---------------------------------------
Update:
I discovered that the unit does not appear to be charging.
Before, the OEM charger became a little hot, and now nothing.
I instaled today the program "Asus AI charger" that lets you charge a ipad in USB, and the icon charging do not apear when i connect the N7, only when i connect other devices.
So mine just fizzled and died not connected to any power source. I was at 9%. It was running a bit warm but no where near relatively hot. Will update...

Alright, I noticed about 3-4 days ago that I was waking up in the morning to almost no charge gained on my phone. I figured my computer turned off or something and my phone just didn't get charged via the USB port. I've now realized that when using specific USB cords (Only one out of 5 that I have works without this issue at the moment), my phone charges for about 5 minutes and then goes into this weird mode where it displays the clock time as a screensaver sort of screen and it stops charging my phone WHILE being plugged in.
As soon as I unlock my phone, I see a steering wheel icon at the top left in my notifications that says my phone is in car mode. Before I can pull down to see what it is or go into the menu settings to see if I can disable it, it turns off and disables again. I went through my ROM toolbox and found no signs of "Car" or "Car Mode" applications installed since I remember seeing "Car" in most rom installations.
It's becoming very frustrating because most times, I plug in my USB cord and my phone begins to charge and then 2-3 minutes later it just stops and goes into that mode. Sometimes it's instant and sometimes it won't work at all. I don't think it's an internal phone problem though because I have a cheap USB cord I found in my closet that is flawless and doesn't bring me this issue.
What could this be? Is my HTC One on it's last legs or what? I don't have my upgrade for another year so I'm really hoping this isn't too serious. The USB cords I do own are in great condition and wouldn't all suddenly stop working at once, so I see no reason to blame those. If anyone is wondering, I'm using CyanogenMod 11 right now, but this is a fresh installation and previously was using a very stable ARHD 6.1 GPe ROM. I also don't think the rom's I'm using have anything to do with it.
I don't know much about this stuff so I'll just leave some other information if it's needed. I have the SuperCID thing done, my phone is rooted and my bootloader is unlocked obviously along with having S-Off. I'm also using TWRP's latest version.
Any help would be really, really appreciated...
Also, to add onto what I said about the screensaver/car mode:
When I unlock my phone while being plugged in and the car mode turns off, my phone doesn't go back to charging unless I un-plug the USB cord and re-plug it in. This is when it usually begins to stop charging seconds after putting it in.

It may be a kernel problem, try a different ROM.
Also try cleaning the USB port with compressed air.

I've been researching it and found a few similar issues and apparently there's no fixes for it. I'm more or less stuck with this for another year until my upgrade. There's a small fix for it but it's a pain in butt to remember:
I have to turn my HTC One off, plug it into the USB for charging and then turn it on and it'll charge correctly.
I've also noticed a major decline in battery life as well. I went from 78% to 71% in 10 minutes a bit ago. Really disappointing seeing as how I've already done so much to this phone I probably couldn't even sell it let alone have a conversation with HTC about it since I've killed any kind of warranty for it so badly.
Damn damn damn damn damn.

Well, if u still got warrany and the phone is working, u can still claim warranty by going back to full stock.
