[Q] Un installing Amazon Apps - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which amazon apps can we safely un install without risking unbootable device? I'm not into book reading and all and want to make this thing as close to a tablet as possible. I got it as a Christmas gift so I can't return it. There are a lot of Amazon apps that I will never use. All they do is take up space. I already rooted it and installed many apps so it works great so far.
Any information would be great.
Regards. Bart.

SKORPiO1975,
You can safely remove:
1. Amazon
2. Amazon GameCircle
3. Amazon Kindle
4. Amazon MP3
5. Amazon Video
6. Appstore
7. Exchange Services
8. Kindle Setup
9. Kindle Special Offers
10. Kindle Tutorial
11. KindleStoreWebApp
There are a few others that fall in the borderline category - I did not include these in the above list.
The above services can safely be removed from /system/app without fear of Bricking the Kindle.
Sorry for the delayed response.

So I can just go into system/app with ESfile and delete?

Thankyou i just wanted to make sure.

I think this is related to the topic so...
I accidentally uninstalled original kindle fire Calendar.apk (and all the related calendar services).
Can anyone please do a backup of all the system apps and send a link to me, or post it here?
Thanks in advance!

What is the purpose of removing these? Is it only for storage space or do they actively use memory?

fbarros,
No worries, we have attached a fresh copy of the Calendar.apk to this response. Please unzip it before
you install it. You need the entire /system/app folder too? - Well here it is, the entire fresh copy
of /system/app - you may download it from here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54456659/app.zip
Please unzip the app.zip to app prior to using any of the apk's.

charmangler,
Very good question charmangler. The primary reason for removing unneeded services or apk's from the /system/app
folder is to increase battery time and to free up memory. Every apk take up memory and resources. Resources
converts to heat, heat converts to energy, energy is battery time.

DVDYETI,
I have seen so many people accidentally delete a critical file like Launcher.apk and end up
with a Brick. I always recommend to either move the apk to /sdcard/Download or rename the
apk, thus disabling it. Try to only delete apk's after you test the Kindle for a few days to make
sure you have not lost a critical service.

Thanks for the advice.

RushNY,
We are in the process of building a custom Kindle Fire utility that would automatically remove (safely)
the Bloat on the Kindle. I know many people who feel uncomfortable working in the /system/app
folder which we understand. The utility is due to release in 3 weeks.

Hulu Plus for Android APK

I installed it on my Nexus One and then grabbed the APK with Titanium Backup. I can install it on my Xoom and run it, but it won't let me login, etc. because the device isn't supported. I thought I'd post it in case any of you know how to tinker with it to remove the device compatibility check.
They got hulu working in browser, Hope they can get this app working.
You would think netflix and hulu would have released a app for tablets by now. It would benefit on both partys as far as sales so why they havent yet is beyond me.... -_-

At a guess, because they're having to work with multiple vendors for hardware DRM because that's what the media holders require.
That, and JNI/C++/Android NDK developers with enough experience to do the necessary coding are extremely hard to find. We may be having to wait while each vendor ramps one of their developers up on the necessary technologies.

What was your problem, did anything error out? I'm the one who wrote the article.
I used sed to make it easier (cut and paste) I could tell you a more manual way of doing it.

I think you misunderstood the post (and I'm sorry if you did). This was just to make it show up in the Market. This wouldn't make the app itself allow playback if you got the error message.
Some devices do work that aren't supported (for example my Nook Color running CM7) so it makes me think that there has to be some way to get around the check, but unfortunately, that's beyond my skill set.
That makes more sense and I misunderstood your post.

I have no idea on how to use that script.
Could you guys back up the app with TB and re upload here?

This method may be a little easier for you. I tested it and it seemed to work just fine.
Directions:
1. Delete Hulu Plus if you have it installed already.
2. Delete any backups you may have of it in Titanium Backup.
3. Get Titanium Backup if you don't already have it.
4. Download this file and unzip it, there will be 3 folders in it.
5. Place all 3 folders in the sdcard/TitaniumBackup folder
6. Launch Titanium Backup and restore the backup.
7. Enjoy?
And of course I'm not responsible for anything that goes wrong and blah blah blah.
PLEASE NOTE: You can't use "Ad Free" or anything that modifies hosts for this, or the videos won't load.

Bruh, that worked perfectly. Thanks
Can we get hbogo the same way?

I just tried this and still got the "Device is not supported..." message. I'm running rooted stock 3.2. Did I do something wrong?
Did you make sure you removed all instances of previous hulu plus installs? I am running Tiamat 2.1 and it is working for me but I used Root Explorer to delete all hulu plus data before attempting the steps.

[Q] App not installed

Some apps just won't install. Tried multiple sources, releases etc. Rooted, not rooted. Always the same message: "application not installed"
My only guess is permission conflicts may be blocking complete installation?
Anyone found a work around for this?

What apps are you trying to install?
I've found a few that wouldn't install & it was because of missing .jar files & libs that the Kindle doesn't ship with, after finding out what an app needed I added them required files & it installed OK but many still have compatibility issues & just stop working, mainly those that rely on Google Maps & location services, not much can be done I don't think.

[Q] App crashing with CM10.2

Hi, guys.
Sorry about the topic, I'm not allowed to post this bug at the right section....
Anyway. Since I've upgraded to CM10.2, Aldiko Premium has stop working. The free version seens to bo Ok.
Is there a way to completely uninstall an App and all of it's references?
Thanks in advance.

This is the correct section. To uninstall an app, open settings, go to apps, click the one you want then you can uninstall from there.

Well, I've already did that.
I guess I'll just have to 'wait'.
Thanks, man.:good:
Not sure if this is a real solution or I just got lucky, but I used Titanium Backup to convert the app to a system app (select the app from the list, special features, convert to system app) then converted it back to a user app (same process). SwiftKey kept crashing on me after the update and this fixed it for me. My guess is it forces the app to be reloaded, but like I said, it may have just been lucky button pushing.

[Q] Kindle fire 2014 launcher??

Hello guys,
I'm looking for the new kindle fire 2014 launcher apk.
I searched everywhere but i can't find it...can you help me?
I'm running the latest kinology Rom so i'm rooted and i have the latest TWRP.
Do you mean the 2013? If so, I can almost assure you that just downloading the launcher and installing it will not work. You will need to find any other libraries needed and install those as well.

No, just editing permissions won't work. You could start a new thread entitled "[REQUEST] 2013 KFHD7 Launcher APK". You'd probably get more attention and someone to upload the file that way.
EDIT: Or just download the update directly from Amazon's servers, extract it, and get the apk from /system/app

[Q] Anyone know a way to bypass the Amazon Appstore External Market Link popup?

NO Amazon, I do not want to open the link/app with your App Store!
So, does anyone know a way to bypass that popup? It's not a big deal, just annoying that I have to back out of what I'm doing, open Google Play, search for the app, find the right one, then finally download it. Thanks to anyone who can help me be even lazier than I am
In case it matters: I'm on a -rooted- Kindle Fire HD 7", running Amazon Firmware version 7.4.8, Root Android 4.0.3, with ADW Launcher EX version 1.3.3.9,

Nope there's a trick, rename a system app called something like marketintentproxy.apk, it will stop the redirects. Not positive on the filename but it is something like that, I had it disabled myself back before i stopped using amazon os.

How did you get to the .apk file to change it to .bak? Did you use something like ES Explorer? If so, where do I look?
Yes you can use es file explorer, look in /system/app
You have to enable root mode and mount system as read-write, though for some reason on the latest Google play store released version of es file explorer i cant find a option to remount system as RW, only root access. Have to remount it from a terminal on the newer version. Don't let what I said confuse you, I am just rambling.
