So, AT&T kills you on a monthly data plan, unlimited for $40 a month are there any alternatives for getting a monthly data plan or do I specifically need to go through AT$T for that service?
Also, I use the "No Data" feature which is awesome by the way to essentially turn off the data to and from my phone, I use WIFI. Someone sent me a text message the other day that I did not receive I assume because I have the data turned off on my phone, as planned.
Is there a way to get around this, t receive messages when connected via WIFI or is that specific to the data plan associated with AT$T?
TW,
u do not need to turn off your connection when using wifi. when you have wifi turned on and properly connected, all data usage will be through wifi so no charges. your phone calls and txt will still come through normally. you can call/email att to confirm, i did. plus you can also check your usage online and it will show no charges for anytime you are using the internet through wifi.

I can get sms through my web connection? I thought SMS came directly from my provider?
Is there a way to use another provider for data service?
TW,
I use Unlimited MediaNet for only $19.95.
That would be the best choice if you want to have data wherever you go for less then the DataConnect plan.
Well if you're without an access point that is.
I've been using it for a while now, and I use quite a bit of bandwidth a month, (IMplus / Tethering pretty much all the time) and it works great.

I've heard this before, I pay $39.99 for MediaNet unlimilted...so how do you get it so cheaply? The tethering can be done with ease but getting caught could encurr the wrath of ATT $$$$$ !
I'm sorry about that.
I'm using MediaMax unlimited.
Its unlimited Data /w only 200 texts a month.
I shoulda mentioned that. =/
Slayer6234,
I know I have the option of downgrading to MediaMax Unlimited online (account access) but I've contacted AT&T and they told me this is not supported so I'm a little leary to change it and have it cost me in the end. How long have you been using this? If it works fine I'll just downgrade and see what happens.
Thanks.
I've been using it for about 2 years now since I got a flip phone with a browser.
I've talked to AT&T about it and they do "frown" upon not using a dataconnect plan with a PDA but I've been using it with the HTC for 3 months and nothing has happened, plus I would just say that I have a flip phone that I can only use medianet on, and that I switch my sim to that from time to time.
The tilt will automatically connect/work with MediaNet.
The PDAconnect / Dataconnect plans will still get you on edge/3g, its just a fancy, more costly way of getting you there.
MediaNet will do the same... and you dont need a tethering plan with the tilt because, well, you have a tilt.
Slayer6234,
Thanks for the info. I'll give it a whirl.
I think I might no longer be confused ... MediaMax is still a service offered through AT&T (https://www.wireless.att.com/media/cingular_video_purchase) at a reduced rate...
So, you can't get an external data plan from another vendor for your phone although @ $20 bones I think that falls in line with everyone else's plans.
TW,
I'm a complete noob at this, so bear with me.
I don't have a data plan with my Verizon xv6900, and I'd like to run Incubus Froyo from the SD card. How hard is it to disable any data apps in a full package like Incubus' so I don't get charged an arm and a leg for data usage? Is it just a matter of disabling wireless networks etc, or will some apps still try to use data without my permission?
I've successfully installed the stripped down version under the "How to use Android without a data plan" thread, but I'd like to use Incubus instead.
There is an option under Wireless & Network settings -> Mobile networks -> Data enabled.
If checked -> data works
If not checked -> data doesnt works
Simply like wifi -> checked, working / unchecked, not working
or you could use
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738612
it is incubus' froyo build just with out all the data using apps, you can also use and nbh editor to turn on ppp nostart this would turn off all data
Install android without simcard.
Then use wifi or sdcard to install apps that disable dataplan and delete all mobile networks, disable networks gernerally.

he has a problem there, he doesnt have a sim card or wifi
?? He does not have a data plan but no sim??? (didn read that ??? )
So the problem i see for him:
After first boot before he can change settings some apps try to use data connection which cost money on a "by call"-plan or smth like that. Apps like market widget etc....
So wouldnt it be enough to to make the first boot without simcard, so he can turn off all data settings?
If he needs an app he can try to download the .apk and install with the sdcard. (i know it works, but i dont know where to get apkĀ“s )

Ah okay.. its the first time i hear about this.. here in germany there are only simcards to use the phone, i think...
How does this work with cdma? How does the provider gets the information who you are?

basicly instead of a sim card all the phones have a serial # or ESN that is then tied to your phone number, this also means for switching phones you have to call and have the ESN changed instead of SIM switching
Incubus froyo without a data plan
thanks for the replies. I "think" i've got all the data disabled. I'll be watching my data usage for a bit just to make sure.

Sorry. I know this is old, but for anyone else reading this thread and trying to figure it out just call Verizon as ask for a "data block" for your line. It is free, and prevents their network from even allowing data to your device. This is a setting on your plan, so even if you flash/re-flash your phone a dozen times, data will not be sent and you won't get any charges - no need to change anything in the ROMs you flash. If you do not have a data plan then you should have this setting on your plan anyway.
Good news today from AT&T for all you data hogs out there:
http://www.slashgear.com/att-increases-unlimited-data-throttling-threshold-01216421/
3GB for HSPA+ and 5GB for LTE per all sources I've read.
Basically bad news for data hogs, good news for average users...

I couldn't help but notice the Sprint ads in the Slashgear article about AT&T's data caps, pushing their unlimited data service.
As to "data hogs," I've asked this before and did not get any good answers. What do people do with their phones to use 4+ Gigs of data a month?

I don't know about AT&T, but the Rogers version here in Canada comes with Netflix pre-installed. That'll make a dent.

AT&T doesn't have NetFlix pre-installed but we can add it. I get movies from the Android Market. But I'm next to a WiFi router when I do it. I don't have LTE yet and data service is just adequate where I live, so Wifi is faster. Plus with Wifi, I don't use any of my data alottment. Of course, for someone on the go or not near a Wifi hotspot, I guess you can use a lot of data downloading videos or streaming music.

The stock AT&T rom will not allow you to download a movie from the market unless you are on wifi... i havent tried the others ones though.
I call this a win. I have been throttled the last three months straight once I reached about 2.5gb, but I never knew where the ceiling is. Now that I know I have up to 5gb, I will be able to plan accordingly, to me, throttled is still much better than overages.
When throttled, I am able to browse, get emails, gchat, just no streaming movies or music, this is just the world we live in, you better get used to it.
And anyone who brags about Sprint's unlimited data, or threatens to leave ATT/VZW for a Sprint unlimited plan has clearly not actually tried to use data on their network.
Trust me, stay where you are.
So question: Would you be able to get say 5G on the AT&T LTE apn and then another 3G on the AT&T HSPA+ apn = 8Gs a billing cycle ?
a few questions.
1. what kinda data plan you have with your carrier?
2. who is your carrier?
3. how much data do you use per month? which apps consume most of your data usage?
4. do you go over your data limit? and does your carrier charge your for going over your limit?
5. how do you keep your data down? like you turn off your mobile when you don't need any network?
I have the P7320T with Telstra. It's a data only plan with only 1GB internet. I barely go over the 1GB mark (I use wifi mostly). IMHO, until ICS it's only good as an e-book reader. Even though I get data speeds up to 32Mb/s, I can't find a broswer that works flawlessly.
I'm currently on Verizon with unlimited data. I've been looking into Fi. The amount of data that I currently use wouldn't allow me to save much money with Fi. However, if through the Wi-Fi access points I could reduce mobile data usage it may save a decent amount of money. Has anyone noticed less mobile data usage after the switch?
