Hi all devs,
We just released a blogpost http://developer.sonyericsson.com/wp/2011/12/15/ice-cream-sandwich-alpha-rom-available-for-unlocked-xperia-phones/ announcing that we have made an ICS alpha ROM available for users with very good tech skills. This means that you should have an unlocked boot loader http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com, and have the knowledge to switch between different ROMs (read our blog post for further disclaimers ; ) ). Also, please note that the released SW is only applicable for Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray. Xperia™ arc will not work, as it has different partition layouts.

This is the first time we have done an activity like this and I, and all others behind this really value your feedback https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/STRJKQF. The release of the ICS alpha ROM is our way of sharing where we are with the ICS upgrade project. My team at Developer World, also published an article last week outlining the different activities we have to pass before releasing an official ICS ROM http://developer.sonyericsson.com/wp/2011/12/07/ice-cream-sandwich-from-source-code-release-to-software-upgrade/. Looking at that article I would say that we are now in the Bringup phase. You will also quickly see that we have not passed certification and approval phase, since we were not allowed to have the radio module turned on. This means that you can’t make any phone calls or use Wi-Fi. However, I still thought that this will be valuable to the tech community. Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoIsNYR7XJ8
What you can do is to test ICS applications early on, and you can also give us feedback on this initiative, and what you think about the ICS alpha ROM. Did it meet your expectations? What things would you wish for. We have a link to a survey in the blog post, where you can submit your feedback. But hey, I can’t promise that we can take care of all requests, as I know you will have plenty… Lastly I believe this release will benefit the custom ROM developers so they can see where we are in our process and how we have solved different things.

This a great step from SE. We'll be happy to test and provide feedback.
Keep up the good work
That's awesome!
Thanks for releasing the alpha builds and supporting the modding community!

WOOOW, SE Development Team is fantastic!
Little question:
Xperia arc not yet?
WOW! This is seriously fantastic! When you first announced you were supporting FXP and made camera libs avaiable, I thought that was amazing. But letting the community try you guys have achieved is so cool! This is the most awesome thing, I have ever seen a company do, seriously!
I have seen something similair before, where devs. make an alpha-release, and already from there, want different oppinions and built from that. Keep involving with the community SE!
FreeXperia Team want to say thanks to SonyEricsson for the great Communitywork you are doing!
Best Regards
That's nice, but I have two questions.
The final ICS for Xperia will look different, fresh, right? Becuase this one looks just like Gingerbread.
I noticed on that video, that you have to long press home button to get the list of running apps. Isn't ICS supposed to get rid of the menu button, by making it to work like home long press used to in Gingerbread?
great move from SE!!!
Hmmm what will happen if i flash this to my Play? Not the best idea right?

I wouldn't think this would be a good idea lol.
Anyone read this its inside the "readme" Also, if you unlock the boot loader, you will not be able to download and install the final Ice Cream Sandwich software upgrade from Sony Ericsson.
For additional information on limitations and warranty, please see the Sony Ericsson Unlock boot loader service.
Spot on SE Dev team, you guys are leading the way these days when it comes to the support for the people that people ask what phone to get, as lets be honest everyone ask's there "Geek" friends what phone to get and the love that SE gives to us just goes to show you are a company that really does care what we the users want to see in the products we buy from you.
Great Work!!!

I already did mine through a comment on your blog post.
However, I will repost it here:
First of all, let me congratulate you for the effort and transparency you’re putting into this. This bridge Sony Ericsson is attempting to create in order to involve more experienced or curious consumers and developers is something that greatly makes me proud for picking your products in the first place.
Since you’ve already demonstrated to value our opinion, I hope you’ll consider mine:
Please, consider upgrading the kernel version to 3.0. The 2.6.32 you have on Gingerbread, and by looking at the demo you just posted it will also be on ICS, is severely outdated (October 2009). 2.6.32 was the official version for Froyo whereas 2.6.35 was for Gingerbread and 3.0 is for ICS. Anyone inside the kernel world knows that a great deal of optimizations separate these versions (RCU, CPU scaling, SLAB, MM, PM, …) which have a deep impact on the overall experience.
Sadly to say, Sony Ericsson competitors aren’t keeping themselves on 2.6.32 (all of them advanced to .35 on Gingerbread and probably 3.0 on ICS) and this may cause an undesirable discrepancy in experience not in favor of your products. I also know that this probably means rewriting a few libs or drivers there and there but you can’t deny it will be worth in the end.
In my opinion, the benefits of pushing the kernel version to 3.0 far outweigh the increased delay you may have on releasing ICS (1 month?). Do consider this.

btw great work SE!
waiting for Xperia Arc
and i hope the final version looks different, because current one looks like gingerbread
this has to be a first!!!
brilliant work SE!
kudos to u guys!
Is it possible to download the complete source code that Sony used when they compiled the ROM for Xperia V. I know where to find the kernel source and of course Android is very easy to get but what about everything else. I'm especially interested in knowing if they made any changes to Android or if they only cluttered the phone with add-ons.
Since Sony did abuse the phone and broke it to badly to make a reinstall possible I'm mainly just interested in getting the sources for my own education and understanding of the system. Perhaps even to try some simple reverse engineering to fix some really absurd settings like NFC not working in lock screen and such before I sell the phone and never ever talk about or to Sony again.
please use search and/or google

Thank you for at least answering me however, I have goggled a lot about this and the link you posted to the best of my knowledge contains only the kernel source plus a few other system programs that are used on the host side when compiling. I'm honestly quite surprised that the answer to this is not well known. I have also since yesterday tried to find out what branch of android is used but that too seem to be obscured in darkness.

from what I am aware of those are the full sources used to compile the ROM, not just the kernel.
what do you mean by "What branch of android is used"

Well, look at the size. It is about 250MB, about the size of the kernel. The Android source is in the gigabyte range, I also have downloaded and compiled the kernel and the file you download contains a kernel folder and a external folder with the helper programs I mentioned.
Well I can't links since I'm to new here but if you do a search for "Codenames, Tags, and Build Numbers" on Google you will see that there are several branches for each version of Android. But now when I looked closer at that list it just so happens that 4.1.2 only has one branch so you can ignore that question, i was tired yesterday and was looking for 4.1.1 that has more like six branches. Still seems hard to find out what would be the right one in that case.
OK, I see what you want.
I am not sure where to find that info, but there will be some on here that will know.

Hi to everyone outhere. Just pulled out my 4x of the shipping box, thought i'd do a little introduction (hoping it won't disappoint anyone)
My name is Rudjgaard, 27 years old Italian...compiler (developer sounds too much for my level )
I come from the sony xperia's where i worked on miui v2 & 4 and currently maintain the ParanoidAndroid thread for sony mdpi line.
I'm unlocking bl now, then will dump system rom to give it a look (though i don't expect major differences) and hopefully by the end of the week will start working for the community.
I like working in tandem with other devs, i also offer my computer for remote compiling/programming if anyone needs decent specs.
Feel free to pm me anytime for anything regarding possible projects to personal help i'll do my best to help out.
I believe this should suffice for now, looking forward to this new part of community,
Best regards,
Rudj

Well....it's my daily and only rom, i bought new phone when halo source was released so.....who knows....maybe....
Dear devs and community,
Now that the xperia z has been out for a while, you might all be aware that there is the famous distinction between xperia z's with
(a) the non-unlockable bootloader
(b) the unlockable bootloader
Now the advantages on the latter one are that you could install custom firmware and benefit from the work of the xda community. To date I am not aware that there is any method to unlock the non-unlockable bootloader in any manner. I would really like to know if we could really do something for that portion of z users that would like to benefit from their phones completely.
Unlocking the bootloader does void the warranty but to this day and age, it's like as if phones are leased to the user and it is ridiculous that s/he does not own the phone completely. So please do not post anything like "it cannot be done etc etc".
What we require is some pointers in order to start from somewhere in the hope of removing this plague completely off the xperia's with locked bootloader. Hopefully this would be a thread that provides insight to other z models on how to resolve this issue.
The bloatware on the phones is incredible! A quick look through adb shell will instantly tell you what I mean. The only way of being safe is not to have a data / wifi connection on the phone. That is why custom firmware is a far better choice than official firmware.
I hope that something could be done. Thank you in advance.
Al
Here's some threads that might provide you with a better insight into the problem:

None of them have succeded fully at loading a custom kernel on a non-unlockable device, or unlocking the device's bootloader.
An alternative would be hijacking ramdisk and loading a non-stock-based ROM on a stock kernel, as they did on the Xperia SP:
XperiaSP Locked Bootloader (LBL) Cyanogenmod 11.0 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735975
I've tried porting the solution they used on the Xperia SP, but I have nowhere near the amount of knowledge to get something like that working. Though, if some experienced dev would look into this solutions, maybe we would have some results
Even if Z's bootloader is unlockable, i think you can still flash custom roms with it. there are custom roms which support locked bootloaders, but of course they use stock kernel. hehe
Thing is we have to look further. There must be a solution. Nothing is impossible to this community. Thing is even as has been posted above. Only stock kernel can be flashed. Rooting is cumbersome as well which is mandatory on such a phone. At least as of the kitkat update u got to play about a lot to root it. Wondering why there was no rooting exploit lile cfroot for z out yet.
Rooting the z is simple, even on kk with locked boot loader - see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783863
Making permanently locked bootloader unlockable is a different story. The devs with the know how would have little incentive to pursue such a task. They would have bought z's with an unlockable bootloader, and unlocked it almost immediately.

True. I was hoping that the Xperia T bounty thread (I mentioned it above) would be of some motivation to devs, and help us fix the problem. But it seems that even 400$ wasn't a big enough motivation (or it's just impossible to do)

Nothing is impossible for this community. There are many people out there who could not buy an unlockable z and hopefully we could make such hardware more usable.

NOTHING is 100% IMPOSSIBLE anywhere. The creator of the universe COULD be a flying spaghetti monster, and Santa Claus MIGHT be real. LOL.
But some things are just VERY improbable.
Never mind sacharine images of "community". What we have is LOTS of people who want things but can't do them themselves, and relatively few people who can actually do those things.
A company developed an unlock for One M8 and NOBODY else can figure it out. They bricked FIVE M8's getting it working. They charge $20 and get LOTS of grief from people whining that it should be cheaper, or free.
BL locks these days are often VERY hard to crack. Each time crackers attacked in the last few years, the OEMs got smarter and put in more safeguards. Gone are the days when ANYTHING could be unlocked.
In the grand scheme of things, $400 is almost nothing to a high caliber cracker, and pledges are often MUCH bigger than real life payouts. A good SW engineer can make $100k per year in the first world, $400 might pay for 4 hours, once all sorts of common sense deductions are made.
I made SURE to buy my Z, Z1 and Z2 tab from non-carrier sources that leave BL unlockable. Others should do the same, or at least learn for next phone.
Remember the time...!
Guys,
I owned a Xperia x8 ho, this old phone has its glory, rip x8...
I tought there was an unnoficial way to unlock it's BL, by the Windows console,
Why not look in there and see if something can be done for the Z?
With the x8 we only had to verify the volttage/date (correct me if I'm wrong)
to see if the exploit was possible, why not try to do the same on the Z?

I can't find back the original thread but I can assure you that my X8 is UB unfortunately it dates:S
I think our best bet is to try and get CM (or AOSP/PA) working on a locked bootloader, using the ramdisk hijack method. It's been done before on the Xperia SP (and open-sourced), so I think it should be possible for the Xperia Z too (just my personal opinion, I'm in no way sure that that would actually work but considering the similarities of Sony products, it might be highly possible).
I'm just too unexperienced to do it myself atm, but I'll still try when I find the time.
This should be of interest.

If you didnt know yesterday the FXP team announced that it would begin lollipop nightlies for 12 Xperia devices, in which our SP isnt included. While reading the list with the 12 devices i realised that devices that are WAY less powerfull like the E3 will get support, and our device which in my expierience seems to run lollipop with ease doesnt get support.
This really frustrated me, as i dont understand why would they do that. Does anyone have an explanation ???
Btw happy holidays everyone
Different phones = different problems. Some phones are more easy to make ports. And other fact is what the XSP developer community is not too big, we don't have much developers working on our phone. More popular phones have more developers, bringing ports more quickly. We have some devs working to bring Lollipop to us, already have a almost fully working build of 5.0 for LBL, which is more harder to port. Unlocked BL only maybe is coming soon. What rest for us is only wait. If someone can't wait is easy: just learn how to develop a ROM and build it for yourself.

Newer devices first.Even XZ is not listed,so there is no way SP could make up in the list.
