Noob here! and I need help!
I had to go back to my old phone while my new one is being repaired...
It is the Sprint HTC Hero which used to rely on google market. Well Market is gone so now I need google play, but have no way to install it,'
Can someone help me determine how to get it installed?
I think that I need to root and update to a newer Android version, but I am not sure how to do that either.
Thanks.

Root using z4root and then install cwm and cm7. You can install cwm through rom manager.

Thanks. But I do not have an installer on this phone. It has been factory reset.
How do I run an .apk file without an installer on the phone? I would put one on...but I cannot get to google play and market is gone.
UPDATE: I don't know how I did it, but I managed to get google play to work and I am now able to install apps again. I believe the IAPK program that allowed me to install the .apk from my computer to the phone was the key. Thanks everyone that offered help.
Hi,
I recently got a 2. Generation Kindle Fire and would like to turn it into an ICS Android Tablet. However, I am not quite sure where to look for a suitable tutorial / whether I could possibly run into troubles when rooting my Kindle and using a clean version of Android instead.
I am posting in here because I do not have access to the Kindle 2 development forum and there is no Q&A Board for my particular device.
So, I'm not totally unexperienced in regards to computers and stuff, but completely new to tablets and regarding operating systems.
I did read this and this, but people kept running into technical problems. On one hand, the boot screen would always have to remain or some particular apps won't probably or on the other hand the kindle would keep updating itself to prevent the foreign os from working probably - or not not working at all.
I would like to just spend one afternoon reconfiguring my kindle 2 (not HD) and then not run into technical issues every few weeks. Is that even possible or is the developement regarding my advice not advanced enough, yet?
Sorry for the inconvenience; I read some general advice on rooting beforehand, but can't quite figure out whether it also applies to my particular device or not. (For example, will Kindle 7 HD stuff also work with my device?)
Thanks in advance!
I used the first link provided to root and install play store.
Once play store was installed I bought kindlefree for 1.99 which allowed me to install a custom launcher and remove ads from the lock screen.
AFAIK we cannot use anything from the HD 7"... but I just got this device today and haven't a clue yet.
Once I have more of a clue... watch out!!
Edit: using custom launcher is not quite perfect.. some apps don't notify my unless I start them (Google+).

pretty much correct.
I ran into an issue...
I tried the first method as suggested, but when I try to run "runme.bat" from Qemu, it hangs at "* daemon started successfully *"
I downloaded the ADB drivers from the link. When those failed to install properly (repeatedly, giving me the exact same issue as linked above), I uninstalled, downloaded the Android SDK, got the proper files for the KF2, made sure I killed the ADB process before I started, I ran cmd as admin, I basically followed every instruction from the original post to the letter. I'm working with a KF2 (not HD) running 10.2.4. Any ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks so much!

You will have to install the drivers manually through the device manager on windows.

That did it. My fault--I assumed that, when I installed through the Android SDK, it had taken care of installing the drivers as necessary.
Thanks!

Lol. 99.999999% of the time that would be correct. If i hadn't had the same issue i wouldn't have known how to fix it. Mine kept picking up the adb drivers for my samsung phone. Needless to say- that didn't work

Hi all,
Im new to Android but I have done a fair bit of developing with Windows phones. I have recently bought a LG Optimus 4X HD and the first thing I want to do is install PhoneLocator Pro for security.
In Windows I used to install security software to the extended ROM so if it was factory reset the software would stay. PhoneLocator Pro says it can do this if the phone is rooted. I have read the guide to rooting and im ready to give it a go.
My question is after I have rooted it, installed the software and removed the bloatware is it then possible to unroot the phone to protect it from accidental deletion and also to increase the security by not allowing deletion of PhoneLocator Pro when it is installed to the ROM.
I have done a lot of reading up on rooting but cant find anything on unrooting. I have also searched but when you search for "ROOT" a lot comes up.
Thanks

"5th. Automatically turns on the GPS giving you greater accuracy. Available only on phones with ROOT"
Soo, if you unroot the phone, the app won't work...
Stock apps can be uninstalled from the phone, and if you unroot there is no problem.
We can't have everything...
Thanks for your help.
If I leave the GPS activate all the time it should still work though shouldnt it?
How do I unroot and then i can try it?

In "SuperSU" you have the option "Remove root completly".
About the app... I don't know if only needs root for that option or to work normally. I never tried that app.
Thanks RuedasLocas.
In your opinion what freeze app software do you consider the best. Im thinking of trying App Quarantine and AntTek App Manager. From what I can see a few havent been updated for a while and therefore dont run so well on ICS.

Sorry if I steal the answer to this question but you can use the free app SDmaid. It also has an App management menu where you can freeze apps.
Or use Titanium Backup Pro Root.

Well... I use Root Uninstall Pro and AntTek Explorer, now, if they are the best or not...
They're very easy to work with and very effective.
RU allow to uninstall or freeze, give the app file location and directory thru AntTek Explorer.
AntTek Explorer allow to see and manage hidden files on the device.
If you plan to do some more Android stuff (especially flash roms what might be possible soon), I'd recommend you to buy Ti Backup. It's great for backups and can freeze, root uninstall, fix market links and more. I have never regretted buying it because you can do so much with it.

u have to drop it in your system apps folder and then reboot your phone. Use Root Explore or I think ES file explorer does it to with root enabled
if u need the apk again, here it is:

I don't think that this .apk works with rooted HTC One because my One with CyanogenMod 10 -m7 Nightly can't run the apk. It says that TV has stopped. Solutions?

I'm sure the issue here is that CM hasn't been able to implement the IR sensor yet, but I could be wrong.

Ah that would probably be it. They haven't even made the LTE network default so that might show they still have work to do on the Nightly.

Thanks for the info.
but this means i'm gonna have to root my phone to get access to that folder...is there any other way u may know how without having to root it?
can i just put the apk file on my phone and enable installation of "apps from unknown sources"...then using astro file manager open the app which would allow installation of the file?like described on this site on how to install apk files to my phone without google play:
https://jiffy.zendesk.com/entries/2...l-APK-files-to-my-Android-without-Google-Play
was hoping not to root my phone until after i get the OTA 4.2.2 update and even then still wait a while cuz i'm quite happy with stock sense 5.0 for now.
if rooting is the only way guess i'll just live without it not really missing it but still would have liked to have it.
thanks for the info

No because this is a system app, not a regular app. U must have root. And my question is, why don't u just root? I've been on 4.2.2 for a long time now because I have root. I'm s off now and gonna upgrade my firmware right away as well. Waiting for ota updates takes way to long and u miss out on the goodies
I strongly recommend getting the all-in-one toolkit by hasoon and flashing the venom rom to get the most positive experience outta your phone

Was able to put the app on the /system/app folder but app keeps crashing.
Just in case, I converted an AT&T HTC One to a Google Play Edition using the rooted 4.3 RUU

Ive had my phone rooted since the first day I got it and i have elemental x. What next? It doesn't ask for root when I open the app. Is there some way to make it ask?

After I rooted my nook hd+ I was able to install a lot of the apps that I could not before. There were still some that I couldn't but the majority of them I was able too.

Thanks for the reply. I did root my Nook HD + but still get the same reply "not compatible" the apps I want are Bank of America and Wells Fargo. It's looking like I'll have to do without.
On another note, I also tried CyanogenMod 10.1 at one point and those apps did install but I found CyanogenMod 10.1 to be to unstable and went back to stock. Guess I will have to stay with plain old Nook HD + Stock.
You can try sideloading the apps that works in a lot of cases where the app says it is not compatible.

I don't know how others do it but what I do is download the app I want to my phone and then use Titanium backup to make a copy. Then depending on size I either email it to myself or transfer it to a PC and then to the Nook.

I GOT IT! Thanks for the info...
I used a slightly different method, I downloaded "APK Fetcher" from google play to my non rooted android phone. It copied the apps that I had wanted and that were already installed on my phone. It placed them on my phones SD card and then I transferred them to my pc. I transferred them to my rooted/with extras Nook HD Plus. Then simply installed them. They work perfectly!
Thanks for everyone's help and many thanks to XDA.

Rooting my Nook HD Plus
I am able to download some apps that were not compatible previously by sideloading them. This is my first post, you can find instructions for sideloading in numerous threads that have way more expierence than I do.
