Steps for flashing kernel - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a question about flashing kernels, please help me a little bit
I have kernel semaphore in a JW5 stock ROM but I want to change this kernel for the last voodo's version. I want to know what steps I must follow to install this kernel correctly (i read about scrpits cleaning but I'm not sure how it works and if its neccesary). If it was posible, I don't want to reinstall the ROM or lose applications.
Thank you so much. I hope your answers.
P.D: Sorry for my english

if u have stock kernell you don't need to use cleaning scripts, so
1. turn off phone
2. turn on in download mode (vol down home power)
3. start odin and press reset
4. put your kernel .tar file in pda
5. connect phone via usb to pc (in odin you should have addedd!!)
6. in odin press stert
after reboot you'll have kernel installed

I don' t have stock kernel, I have semaphore
Enviado desde mi GT-I9000 usando Tapatalk 2

then go to cwm, and choose clear semaphore settings (or something like that) reboot, and flash new version.
also if you're changing from semaphore to semaphore you don't have to do it

Just flash the kernel. I've actually run into problems before because I used a cleaning script.

I've just flashing voodo kernel but I have some bugs. I don't understand why everytime I reboot my phone the SuperSU app needs to update. I update it, next I turn off the phone, I turn it on and the app needs again the update. How can I fix it?
Thanks again!

Try clearing data for superSU, if that doesn't work then uninstall and reinstall it.

Good, did just clearing the data not work?
If it comes back you could also try clearing market data, but hopefully it will be fine now.

No, first I cleared the data but when I rebooted the phone, the "bug" (if it could be called bug) persists. Then, I uninstalled the app using their own option and, without rebooting, I downloaded it from market. It seems that method worked against all odds xDD
Anyway, thanks for the advice of clearing data, if it petsists, I' ve already known what to do
Sorry again for my english

Must be a bug with supersu somehow. If you have cleared it's data, uninstalled and reinstalled it, and cleared market data then i can't see what else you could do.

Hi,
Congratulations for that fantastic work.
I ran this Nova Recovery and I selected "Wipe Data" option, to reset to default settings. Then I select the rebbot device option. (Later I wiil install the Nova Rom)
But now when on the boot device they stay on same black screen flashing the 4 below lights.
Can anyone help me?
Lol, when you wipe data it will take a bit more time to boot.
I'm waiting for more than 15 minutes
Is the phone bricked?
As I can't access to any application, is there any way to enter in recovery menu?

If you don't have Nova ROM and you can't boot directly into recovery and you're stuck in the boot whenever you power it on, then you'll have to flash a firmware.

If you haven't nova, you cannot directly boot to recovery. Two ways:
Remove the battery and try again. It will probably fix nothing and may be harmful.
Or go to the firmwares flashing tgread and use method 1 by modaco to reflash stock firmware and do from there.

No, I don't hava a Nova Rom (I have the original rom).
I try remove the batery and power on it again, but the problem keeps.
So, I will try this:
"go to the firmwares flashing tgread and use method 1 by modaco to reflash stock firmware and do from there"

Cannot post the link since I am using Tapatalk, but just Google "P970 firmwares flashing xda" go to it, and read post with calm. Meanwhile, plug in the phone so you don't run out of battery when booting or whatever.

Thank you all for the help
I already have the Nova rom, but I only can unbrick? the phone by the method 2 of the referencied thread.
Ups, I didn't know relax was using ext4 on /cache.
This will cause some problems since the recovery isn't ready for it.
I'll later upload a new version.
Thanks!!! Maybe you can find some time to fix the progress bar, too

If this is only partially functional too, whats the benefit of installing this?
Noejn it's impossible rewrite the bootloader for hardware combination key for enter to recovery for use with all rom?
It's very dangerous for bricking the phone?

Where is cut, copy, paste????

Some apps, stupendiously dont have that functionality, but when you press on word you want to copy paste, you get that box in top corner.
You will find ICS manual on Samsung website, on the note page. Handy for cross reference

Crap that sucks. Best I can suggest is revert to gb by pc odin, in gb do factory reset from dialer, wipe everything and then pc odin ics, again. And then perform the rooting instructions to the letter.
For install guide see dr ketans thread.

Whatever you do, do not perform factory reset unless you have safe ICS kernel.
BTW, double tapping words or tapping and holding on text for a couple of seconds pops out cut/copy/paste menu.
In certain applications for example - Gmail, there's even search option.
Hope this helps.
Corrected if double tab doesnt work.

If stock kernel is the safe kernel, then I'm the CEO of Samsung and I'm going to give away S3 to every Note owner for free...kidding.
Please read the PSA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633943
All stock ICS kernels including CF-Root kernels for ICS have superbrick bug.
Your device would get bricked if you perform data wipe/nand restore using those affected kernels.
DAFUQ, Franco R3, SpeedMod 3-3 are safe kernels.
Kernel used in official cyanogenmod is also safe kernel.
All known Gingerbread kernels are safe kernels.
Before you start flashing custom ICS roms make sure you read the respective OPs throughly.

I need your support that i was trying to flash CM10 ROM and i used CWM touch to wipe and reset factory setting but the recovery mod got freezed and after that it kept restarting with showing only the startup Screen and i couldn't open the recovery mode but the download mode working fine
i tried to flash the GB or the ICS stock ROM but both freezed nearly at the end of the flashing
I also tried to flash CF-Root-SGN_XX_XEU_LQ2-v5.6-CWM5 and AbyssNotekerne both were flashed normaly
can any one help me plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
you have bricked your phone, likely cause you didn't follow instal instructions and performed wipes on unsafe cwm.zip, or unsafe kernel in unsafe recovery.
Best case is flash safe kernel, reboot in safe recovery, then do wipes.
Check if you can flash gb rom throught pc odin and it doesn't get stuck on factorysys longer then an hour. See dr ketans thread on that in sticky section development.
all at own risk.

It's very clear and well documented that cwm.zip its a dangerous recovery... Now Wich kernel were you using when performing the wipes with cwm? If your answer its stock ICS, pack your phone for deliveries and send it to samsung for repairs.. As you just got super bricked..
Some other kernel then explain further

Phone bricked ..Quick boot factory reset

Hello
i first flashed v 30b then wanted to switch with that IGIO 2.0.2 phone bricked then i used smart flash and now im on v 10A then i rooted my phone with Blackjack .. then i installed Quickboot to get in recovery..but everytime i try this ..it gives me a Factory reset and dont get me in recovery
Any ideas what to do ?!
and any recommendations for a highly customize rom and somehow stable ?
thanks inadvance
I guess you installed a rom that has a locked bootloader.
1. DOWNLOAD THIS ROM
2. FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL
3. THANK TO N00BY0815
You`ll get Gingerbread rooted.
After you do these steps just copy rom manager to your sd card or download it through Google Play, then download the rom you want to install, copy to sd card and reboot into recovery .
Before installing quickboot you must install ROM manager and CWM, then you can install quickboot and go to custom recovery.

If you install rom manager there`s no sense to install quickboot.
You can go to recovery from rom manager by option "reboot into recovery" .

[Q] Mackay 4.4

Hey there, I registered because i recently bought a used galaxy i9000.
It came with the 2.3.6, so I wanted to upgraded it, so I had to use this custom rom's, which I've never heard about before.
After some research i decided to use the Mackay_ROM_4.1.7 to upgrade my phone, but after i did it, some problems appeared:
-The Play Store disapeared; (Meanwhile I was able to fix this error)
-It's always appearing this message on the screen "Unfortunately, the process android.process.media has stopped."
Is there a way to change to another ROM?
If yes, is there any way to fix these problems without need to change the ROM?
I would appreciate your help and opinion.
Thanks!
And sorry for my bad english and all my questions, I am kind of a noob in these things
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile I was able to fix both errors.
1- I fixed the google play store problem by trying with another "gapps" file, the first one maybe was corrupt.
2- The other error I fixed it by doing a factory reset
Hey
If u are new to things then i would recommend using cyanogen mod..
get.cm
Download from that link and also install gapps from goo.im/gapps
Steps:
1. TAKE EFS FOLDER BACKUP
2. Boot recovery
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. Wipe cache & dalvik cache (under advance)
5. Install zip from sdcard
6. Choose zip
7. Install gapps
8. Reboot, first boot will b about 5-10 mins..
Done..

Clear data of Camera and Gallery (they're seperate on Kitkat), or push another apk from another rom to see kf there is any difference. Also try apps from the market like Focal
