[Q] Kindle Fire - Help Which Gen - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me how to tell if my Kindle Fire is a 1st or 2nd Gen model.
I would like to install Go Launcher as I'm not a fan of the carousel system, but I have read that this is not possible on the 2nd gen without rooting and unfortunately rooting is not something that I would like to do at the minute?
Thanks in advance

Ok this is what you can do.
The first gen has a unlocked bootloader so you can easily load custom roms.
The second gen has a locked version so you have to unlock it.
So try entering the bootloader which i believe when your device is turned off, hold your powner button and volume down key until device screen changes

Just look at your software version. Anything 6.3.2 and earlier is first generation.

Is my Kindle Fire HD (7.2.1) unuseful now?

Hi all, I'm posting after weeks lurking here how to make my Kindle Fire HD 2 a real table. I followed many steps but now I can't even switch on the kindle so I ask you if I can solve my problem.
The kindle I have is the Kindle Fire HD (I guess 2) with Microphone and Webcam. The Version is 7.2.1
At first I rooted the device using the instruction on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1891939
Eveything worked and not without any effort. I had to install the Android SDK and test many times the adb tools.
Before that I tried the KUF 0.9.6 but didn't work.
After the rooting I wanted to install TWRP, my purpose is to have a tablet with Android.
I followed the instruction on this page: http://finditmore.info/2012/09/19/install-team-win-recovery-project-kindle-fire/
I guess here is the mistake. I downloaded the twrp 2.3 and firefirefire 1.2 and installed as wrote in that page, but now I can't switch on the kindle. Really is like death.
Could anyone explain me what I did wrong? Could I still recover the tablet?
Thanks in advance

The post you linked explains a method for KINDLE FIRE 1ST GENERATION, there's no possibility for now to get a recovery working in our devices regardless of whether the device is a Kindle Fire HD or a Kindle Fire 2. So, you probably bricked your device. From my point of view you only have 2 choices: You can retUrn it to Amazon and pray, or you can try with this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254.
But please, read everything before doing anything.
Hope it helps

Thanks. I'm downloading the system from the thread you pointed me out. But what make me very disappointed is the fact that the kindle isn't switching on anymore. This is really odd.
I'll try to fix it if I can't I'll send to amazon and I'll pray.
Anyway, where are the instruction to flash the Kindle HD 7.2.1?
Thanks!
There is no way you can get your device working now. As far as we know, only Amazon has the ability to fix a second generation device that has an unsigned bootloader or recovery installed.

I suspect we are about 6 to 8 months away from seeing custom ROM's (if we use the past as an example). The utilities you mention FFF and TWRP were designed around a completely different bootloader - Kindle Fire (Original). There is a group working on a new Bootloader named "Safestrap" but the project is on "Hold" at the moment: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1965045
What we can do until that time is Root the Kindle, install Google Play and an assortment of Google Applications. You can also give your Kindle a facelift by installing a new Launcher like Go Launcher: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915493
Enjoy.

Kindle fire HD 7 7.4.7 newbie

Hi I just bought my first Kindle fire HD 7 7.4.7 from best buy, I do not like how amazon os lay out, I see peoples using android os , I do not know where to start, can any one show me where to go from here.
First you need to root it with binary's root method, do not even consider using kindle fire utility or you will hard brick. Next read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
That will get you where you want to go. Two notes I want to add, put the ROM you wanna use on your sdcard ahead of time because your kindle will boot loop after you install 2nd boot loader and twrp, and the only thing you can do is go into recovery. Second note, when flashing the second boot loader and twrp, make sure to check the first check box about downgrading the boot loader with the red text under it, if you don't you will have a red screen on boot that will only be fixable by using a fastboot cable.

So you tell me this kindle fire hd 7 with 7.4.7 running jelly bean os ? , btw what roms is best for play flash video, watch youtube.netflix and some gaming,
I read over thread, I wish there a video
Yes you can run jellybean based OS's like cm, 10.1, and cm 10.2, hashcode just released a kit at build of cm 11 though and technically that's the most up to date version of android, though it probably might have a few bugs that are being smoothed out since I think it was released less than a week ago.
There are videos on the net but some come with the files for specific devices, and if you use the strong filled you could end up with a hard brick. The fire flash method is pretty straight forward, as long as you follow the advice I mentioned I think you should be ok.

what roms version is most peoples is using ?
I would guess cm 10.2 and cm 10.2 based ROMs, but that's likely to change now with cm 11 out since it uses less ram. You can try more than one and see which one you like the most. I'm still sticking with a cm 10.1 build because of a tablet patch I made for it that I couldn't get to work on cm 10.2, but that's just me, I would be on one of the newer builds if it weren't for this.

Hi, Is this method confirmed working on the 3rd Gen KFHD7 (2013) on 7.4.7?
3rd gen's don't run 7.4.7... That would be a second gen if it's running that os version.

Kindle Model/Version identification problem

Good evening everyone,
I have recently bought (and bricked) a Kindle Fire HD from Amazon with the statement “Previous Generation” in the title.
Now, after spending a week reading this forum with guides, tutorials and referenced articles I have concluded that there is a “huge mess” out there in identifying and naming each Kindle version.
As far as I can tell my Kindle should be a 2nd Generation of the HD series, also called “2012 Version” in some threads but although an extensive reading I could not figure out if there is a way to clearly identify a model from its hardware serial number / features.
The next logical question would be “Which guide/tutorial should I follow in order to Root and customize my Kindle thus transforming it in a full-featured Android tablet?”
If I suppose that my model is correctly identified by the definition above, than I should follow this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848) although there is no mention about generation in the title.
I would be glad If anyone with a bit of “field experience” might help me clarifying this thoughts and avoiding bricking another device.
Thank you in advance for your time, your courtesy, and the great job you provide maintaining this board.
If it has a camera it is a 2012 model. If it was 2013 then all you could do is root it. Anyways if it is indeed the 2012 model then use this to root it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
And I suggest this to get recovery and 2nd boot loader installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
Just remember to check the first checlbox about downgrading the bootloader, I should be followed with a warning in red, if you don't do this you will need a fastboot cable to fix it afterwards. Oh and make sure to put a ROM and its corresponding gapps on ahead of time because it will boot loop and only let you go into recovery once you install 2nd bootloader + twrp.

Dear stunts513,
firstly thank you for your kind and complete answer!
My kindle has a front-facing camera, so thanks to your detailed description I can say It is a 2012 model.
Thank you for the tutorial links, especially for the tips about downgrading bootloader and correctly preparing for the 2nd bootloader + twrp.
Your help has been really precious.
