I'm attempting to replace my HTC HD2 that is running 2.3 and netbook. That is, I'm going to try using a tablet only. I'm a web surfer/emailer/texter and that's about it. How hard could this be? Here's what I want:
Android 2.3 (Honeycomb is fine, too.)
7" Screen (that doesn't totally suck)
3g
GPS
Bluetooth
I don't need speed. I just want to be able to use it like a normal phone, but with a bluetooth headset.
What's out there? I'll even consider made in China junk...if someone can convince me that it's not total junk. I'm sure others like myself (giant sized hands) would want this rather odd size for a daily use phone, no?
Right now, the closest thing that looks acceptable is the Viewsonic ViewPad 7". Mixed reviews, but I'm assuming at some point Gingerbread and overclocking will help it out.
please, please...dont consider china junk...
i totally agreed with viewpad 7" choice
hi
yes i agree..............
A non-USA Galaxy Tab?

7" phone? Wtf, you must be a giant for real...
Samsung Galaxy tab (P1000). I think it's by far the best 7" choice.
One other thing: if you want to use it as a phone, you can exclude Honeycomb tablets, since Honeycomb does not support phone functionality.
Thanks for the info!
Why non-US Galaxy Tab? I've got friends in England and Australia who visit here often, and could bring one over for me.
Its the one with the phone enabled modem.

Ouch! $600 USD for the UK version new. Yes the dollar become the peso?
I believe the 7" Asus MEMO tablet is supposed to be capable of voice calls, plus it should have better specs that the Galaxy Tab (720p screen and a dual-core CPU if memory serves).

The Dell Streak 7" does all that...
+1 on the Dell Streak, very good device indeed.
Isn't 7" a bit excessive for a phone?
I chose the Desire S over the Desire HD because 4.3" was too big, I couldn't imagine trying to take a call on a 7" screened handset =P

Exactly...
He said that he will use it with a headset so I don't see how the size is a big factor. I have the sensation with a 4.3 inch screen and while it is much better than the g1 I came from, I still wouldn't mind a bigger screen.
Hey guys, get whatever 3g tab you want, and install skype, use with a BT headset. all your problems solved.
samsung galaxy tab love it as my all in one
7" is fine for me, for a phone. I have big pockets. Non issue.
Soooooo...
I use google voice. I could use the standard phone and text, I suppose. To go to Skype would be a pain.
Does the Dell 7 really work as a phone?
Researching...researching.
I'm wondering if the Honeystreak rom here has a phone app. Couldn't find an answer.
well. i got my daughters a couple of no name tablets. or the brand ive never heard of. the description is

This is kindle fire hd thread, if you want to tweak it find how to root it with an universal root tool. Then edit build.prop and find how to enable init.d. there are a lot of threads about this. Search in google to but here is kindle fire hd

And dont throw gapps on it, first, Can you open market? Or there is an error with the google service. Tell me the problem, i had some problem with my super tweaked kindle fire hd. But now i solved all of them. The chinese tablets arent good. You could expend a bit more and bought a kindle fire, or a kindle fire hd, these two are good and the price is perfect for the specs. I wanted to bought a chinese tablet but it had a lot of problems. I bought my kindle fire hd on ebay because Im from argentina
I saw that tablet that you bought and it isnt the best. Never think that a chinese thing will be perfect. Ever spend a bit more and bought a good tablet $50 more and you could buy a kindle fire second generation that have a lot of tweaks, roms, for me $50 dollars are nothing

How can I tell which version of the Kindle Fire I have? I know its the Fire, rather than the HD, but how can I tell whether it's the v1 or v2?
I only got it a few weeks ago (was purchased 2 weeks before that as a christmas present) but it was purchased from a shop rather than from Amazon directly and so it may have been sat in a stock room for 6 months before that.
Any version numbers I can look out for?
Olly
If it's running 10.2.x it's a KF2.
If it's running 6.3.x it's a KF1.
Kindle Fire 7" First Generation or Second Generation

I've seen some leaked information that Amazon is preparing, and that they will release new Fire Tablets and also a New FireTV-Stick, next week!
Does anyone know if this information is true and what we can expect in these new Fire 7 tablets (2015) models?

Model released last fall [2015 Fire] can now be purchased w/16GB storage option. I'm hoping for something meatier like an HDX replacement. Current mid-range tablets are less than noteworthy given price points.
As you already said, the Fire7 can now be purchased with 16GB, which is really good, but I was also hoping for something better with some enhancements, like a New HDX.
I have also noticed that several weeks ago, some colors of the FireHD8 sometimes are unavailable, in very short supply or are also offered used-like-new/Used-Very-Good, what could be a sign that Amazon is preparing to launch some new models with some enhanced features.
Got the 3 Kindle Fire 7 (2015) tablets for $30 each from Amazon. They were open box returns. They are the 8gb (2015) models. I got these a couple of weeks ago and they came with 5.1.1 firmware. Amazon is still selling these open box returns.
Amazon has a department called WAREHOUSE DEALS, that sells their open box, damaged box, returns and old stock at a discount. Most items come with a warranty and are eligible for Prime shipping.
To find these deals on Amazon, go to the Amazon main page.
Select TODAY'S DEALS under the Amazon Search Bar.
Select OPEN BOX & USED on the menu below TODAY'S DEALS.
In the WAREHOUSE DEALS department, search for KINDLE FIRE.
They currently have a couple of Fire 7 (2015) tablets for around $30 (with no warranty).
These are exactly what I bought and they all worked great. These Kindle Fires arrive, shrink wrapped, with a charger and data cable. That's all that is in the plain brown box. No original packaging or printed material is included.
Amazon describes these discounted Kindle Fire 7's as having slight blemishes. My 3 tablets had similar descriptions but they were perfect. The screens were all perfect. At most there was a slight rub on the back of the tablet that you had to look at really closely to even see. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one again if I needed another one.
The new Kindle Fire Oasis eReader was released this week - maybe this leaked information was referring to that?
Also, there is this:
New version of the Kindle Fire HD 8 is apparently in the works at Amazon
Amazon Fire HD 8 sequel apparently on the way with 1.5GB RAM

Of accurate this is a good move by Amazon. The current HD8 is a rip IMHO; a used HDX offers far more at a better price point. Too much is made over max freq and other glossy specs. The MT8163/T720 is a responsive combo when properly tuned which is all that really matters in this segment. Rootability and FlashFire support will ultimately determine how interesting this device is to the XDA community. Hopefully Amazon equips it with a decent panel (beyond resolution specs) and keeps the price below a Benjamin USD.

Thank for this great news, about new Fire HD 8 Tablets!
Currently using a 5th Gen 7" Fire tablet I got from Prime Day. I haven't owned a Fire tablet since the very first Kindle Fire and it had the same problem with Amazon Video being broken after rooting the device. I remember the only way to fix it was to unroot the Fire again, but it's been years since I looked into this problem. Is unrooting still the only solution to fixing Amazon Video?

Can't speak to FireOS v5 but Amazon Video works fine with most/all custom roms via the Underground app (despite the ominous name it is an 'official' app distributed by Amazon). Not sure if the Underground app will behave differently on FireOS as it is intended for non-Amazon devices running other Android variants.
