Hi, never really use the Gallery app for anything other than setting wallpaper but whilst playing around with it & using certain functions I've noticed it crashes on two specific effects, Face Tan & Face Glow, I've installed a log capturing app & think I've located both errors but don't really know much about reading logcat stuff to resolve (if it can be)
I've already tried copying in all the lib/so files it mentions from a recent ICS GApps zip as well as all the xml files from the permissions folder but it still force closes on both those effects..
Anyone know the exact problem & a fix?
I've used external links as the forum attachment resizes/blurs the images.

Somehow I messed up setting up my wife's new Moto X. In the past I had some tasker tasks to transfer all the photos off our phones and onto our NAS every night. In setting up the task on her new phone I deleted a slew of pictures. I know the original photos are gone and I'll face the music on that one. However, if I go to camera and swipe to the left I can scroll through all the photos. I can't email or share any because the file is gone, but if I can see the photos there must be a low res image someplace on the phone still. Anyone know how to access these and possibly get me out of the doghouse? They're not in the DCIM folder at all. I poked around in the Android/Data folder a bit, but did not find them.
On the same note, is there a way to clean these out over time? Seems to me if I have a thumbnail of every photo ever taken it would eventually fill up the storage.
Thanks
Get an app like astro file manager, or root Explorer and go to storage then DCIM and your thumbnail pics should be there.

Those are probably all cached. As for recovering them, I'm sure you can find them in the cache -- I don't know where they'd be saved (I believe there is a /cache partition but then there's also the possibility that the gallery caches those previews somewhere in /data/). It may be easier to to screen shot the ones you want.
EDIT: see above post - that's probably what you want
As for the cache growing, I'd imaging that the gallery app has some sort of maintenance. But there is always the option of using apps (I have SD Maid, personally) and/or periodically clearing the cache partition via a custom recovery
Thanks all. This was good info also. I ended up finding the files on my NAS which leads me to a whole other question which I will post seperately from this as it only related by symptoms.
So this issue has persisted for a few weeks now and I'm not sure how to resolve it, short of doing a full factory restore (which I consider last resort, but I'll probably do this over Xmas if I don't resolve it soon).
The issue : Gallery app seems to have "lost" a whole load of my images.
I can see photos/videos I've taken, screenshots/recordings and my Download folder, but all "other" folders are gone.
I had this problem before and I managed to fix it by removing a .nomedia file which was in the same folder as a whole load of images that the Gallery app decided to ignore. The .nomedia file isn't there now.
If I use a file exploring app I can see all my images in various folders on my phone (images saved from reddit/VSCO/facebook etc). Other apps such as Google Photos can see all my images. If I go to share an image from the Facebook app then I can see all my images (although they are always mixed up and not sorted by date/name or anything like that. also very frustrating) so I know 100% that all my images are there, but the stock Gallery app has decided to ignore them.
It's not like the problem is confined to one folder and sub folders either as I'm missing my "reddit_sync" and "prisma" folders which are located EVA-L09\Internal storage\Pictures but the "Screenshot" folder saved in that location is accessible in the Gallery app. Same with EVA-L09\Internal storage\DCIM: \Camera\ is accessible as I can see all the photos and videos I've shot with the phone but the folders \Facebook\ and \Photoscan\ are not showing up at all in Gallery.
If I long press a folder (i.e Download) in the Gallery app from my phone and select "Add to Others" then the folder just disappears. The "Others" folder has totally gone.
Things I've tried
Settings > Apps > Gallery > Storage > Clear Data and Clear Cache : This restores any folders that I've put in "others" but "others" is still missing
Created a new folder and cut and pasted images into this folder on the phone. Reboot phone to see if Gallery now sees images. It doesn't
Moved a whole load of images off my phone as I thought maybe I had too many images stored on it or something. Made no difference.
Searched for all .nomedia files on the phone. None of which were stored in any of the effected folders.
Checked to make sure there's no folders selected in "Hide Albums" from the Gallery.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling I may just need to clear the data/cache on some other app or something, but I don't want to start dropping mini-nukes on apps in the hope that I get a direct hit on the one thing that's causing "Others" to disappear.
Thanks in advance.
Did you try settings>apps>media storage>storage and clear data for this? I guess this will solve your issue
Edit: probably you need to either reboot afterwards or wait some minutes for the media library to be rebuilt.

Haha that did it! Thanks so much, it's been driving me mad!
Just FYI I didn't have to reboot, the library started to rebuild almost instantly after opening up the Gallery app..
For anyone else who has this problem and has stumbled across this post: When in Settings > Apps make sure you select "Show System Processes" from the menu. I couldn't find Media Storage until I had done that.
Thanks again, FadeFX
Sry, forgot to mention that...

I've been here so many times, hoping I must of done something wrong but I followed it right, I've cleared the date enough to lose count hoping that the albums that I put in "others" would show up, even restarting my phone after I've cleared it, they still don't show up at all.. and can't move them to another gallery folder on "files" due to it.
Albums don't show in photos
All albums appear correctly in albums tab, but the photos tab (where all pictures are shown) only includes camera photo and video and screenshot albums, tried the solutions above didn't work
Missing video Huawei

I have a Huawei Nova and 4 days after transferring videos from my PC to phone , discovered that they were ''gone''. Inspired by your suggestions , I tried: Settings, then Apps, then Gallery, then Storage, then clean data ....rebooted and videos ......are back.
Very much wonder if this issue wil come back in the future or is this a permanent ''cure''.:fingers-crossed:
Thanks a million for your suggestions
*completely reworked and improved app in the post immediately following*
I created a little one-touch app to utilize the native screencap capability of the NST. As noted a long time ago in another thread, this capability is a little odd, as it results in a blue or green-scale image. This app corrects that issue, converting to 256-greyscale.
But....what about Screenshot Easy or any of several other PlayStore apps? Actually, I have used Screenshot Easy for some time, and I do like it. What I really wanted, however, was a capability reminiscent of the power-button option in CyanogenMod ROMs where one touch can give you a screenshot of any screen, right while you are looking at it. While adding that function to the power button on the NST is beyond my pay grade, I was able to do this much. To get the most out of this app, you need to have a hardware button available. Using NTMM, assign that button to the app and you can then take a screenshot at any time (except on the sleep screensaver--yeah, I had to try!). I included a few examples below.
Install
1. Download the apk file (below)
2. Transfer to your NST [probably also NSTG--can someone confirm?]
3. Touch on icon from your file manager and choose to install.
4. In the root of your SD card, create a folder called "Pictures". Within that folder, create another folder called "Screenshots". Folder names and locations must be exact. Sorry.
*This app requires root access because it is executing shell commands. The first time you try to use it you will likely get a screenshot of your SuperUser app permission screen*
Screenshots are saved with names like "screenshot_7-29-2017_13.57.jpg" (yup, that's the date and time). When a shot is taken, a notification appears as a confirmation.
To assign a hardware button to the app, use Nook Touch Mod Manager (NTMM), or just tap on the app icon to take a screenshot.
Edit: I have recently discovered that these apps--and all Tasker-generated apps--have a dependency on two library files normally installed with GApps. If you do not have GApps installed on your device, you can still use these apps by copying the two attached files into the locations shown below (the xml file is zipped so you can download it rather than view it):
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Set permissions for both files to rw-r--r-- and reboot.
Version 2!
6-21-23: updated to 2.2
--removed dependency on Screenshot Easy app (you can uninstall it)
--added small binary file, fb2png, which "replaces" malfunctioning device screenshot routine
This is a completely re-worked approach to a one-touch screenshot which is now part of my Alternate Power Menu app, here as a stand-alone.
Install
1. Unzip the attached file
2. Copy over Google maps library files as described in post #1 above (if not already present)
3. Copy the file "fb2png" to /data/local, set permissions to rwx rx rx
4. Create the folders /sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots
5. Install the Screenshot app
Use
You can take a screenshot by tapping on the app icon, but the best use is to assign the app to a hardware button using NookTouch ModManager. When you take a shot, there is a brief pause and then eventually a "flash" of a smaller image of the screen (see attached image below), followed by a notification. Because the app now requires root in order to determine whether the device is in portrait or landscape orientation, your first screenshot might be of the SuperUser permission screen. That won't happen a second time.
something could be wrong with the Screenshot version2_1 you reproduced.

Maybe, but I've installed the app on two NST devices without problems. However, it's not been tested on older firmwares, only 1.2.1 and 1.2.2. I don't see any reason why it should not work on the older firmware.
Check the Screenshot Easy configuration and make sure the image format is set correctly and that the path for saving the images is correct.
I'm out of the country now and don't have my NST with me, but I'll be back in a week and double check the uploaded apk. Could have been corrupted I guess.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to copy your settings 100%ly.
However, it can't take shots if I set the settings exactly the same as yours(it 'flashed' but create nothing in the folder)
Screenshots will only be taken when I turned on those two options(see in the attachment).'Start capture' and 'Notification icon' have to be turned if I want to take shots on my NST.
Also, I have updated my previous post to show how different the picture quality was by using 2 screenshot methods

I'm sitting in an airport lounge thinking about this problem. Did you try assigning the 2.1 version screenshot app to some other hardware key? Something about the timing on the long-press "n" might be causing an issue?
OK, I downloaded the posted 2.1 apk file and installed it on my NST running FW 1.2.1 and also a second one running 1.2.2. I didn't have the app installed previously because I use the Alternative Power Menu app and that includes the same screenshot routine.
To be brief: it works perfectly on both devices.
I can't emphasize enough the importance of having the two Maps files properly installed prior to the installation of the Screenshot app (if you do not have a prior GApps installation). That includes the reboot once the two files have been copied into the correct folders and their permissions set properly.
If you have done that and the app still refuses to function then there must be something about the older FW you are running, although I can't imagine what because the app really doesn't interact with the B&N stuff, but I suppose they could have found some Android 2.1 issues and corrected them in later FW versions.
I am using X-Rom 2.3.1 and have issues trying to do anything in the Gallery or Google Photos app. Trying to copy, move, and sometimes view pictures throws an error saying it has stopped responding. This happens about 3 or 4 times for every picture moved, and it is frustrating. I've tried clearing Media Storage and Download Manager's , restarting the phone, and even disabling Media Storage. Disabling Media Storage worked, but I could no longer access the Gallery (which defeats the point of even trying to solve the error to begin with.) What should I do about this issue?
Edit: So I've gotten the error to stop appearing by using Simple Gallery instead of the Samsung Gallery. Simple Gallery is a better app anyway, so I don't mind using it. However, the thought that I am putting a band-aid on the problem doesn't sit well with me. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I've tried basically everything a Google Search will find and no amount of cache clearing, app preference resetting has been able to fix it.
Edit 2: I apparently had some file in my downloads folder that was refusing to be read. I backed up the folder and deleted it and it works now.
So I've noticed using files by Google in all images, there are loads of random Korean pictures and emojis etc that I don't remember viewing at all. They are all thumbnails which are being shown but all added up to 445mb at 2051 files. How do I prevent Google files showing these thumbnails as I'm sure Android cleans those regularly doesn't it?
Ive been browsing ali express and using chrome alot lately so maybe the thumbnails are from there.
You are right. These (cached) files are indeed from the browser and other apps.
I've found in settings I had "show hidden files" show files that are used to run Android and apps ticked. Will keep an eye out and see if these cache files are shown anymore or not.

You can delete them, but it would be pointless because the apps will regenerate them everytime you use the app.
