[Q] Why is it taking so long for a proper recovery? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
as stated in the question, why is it taking so long for a proper recovery to come out?
is there a major road block or something? like bootloader sources etc?
Thanks.

The devs are probably very busy, lots of things happened in smartphones' world recently. I'm sure it'll be there soon enough.

Just tell me the bugs of TWRP and I'll try to fix them

Droid 3 source code

Motorola just released the source code for the Droid 3 on Sourceforge.
Source code
I was just going to start a thread on this edgan
Pardon my French but...
**** YEAH!
So does source mean we just don't have to find an exploit, and can create compatible, rootable ROMs without cracking the official one? Or does it mean we can get root, too?
It means neither. You'd still need signed keys to flash anything created from the released source code.
However, if there are any exploits, having the source might assist in finding them.
Hell yes!

Every single Android device must have the source code released. It's part of the AOSP license, these companies can't use Android without releasing this code.
Yay!
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Yeah I heard that the source code wont help much either.
BUT(not related to this)
I think we have a bigger chance of getting an official sbf now. Reason being is that there is an update that is being pushed to test and dev devices (I think it's 5.6.960 or something), hopefully somewhere between this road a moto employee or tester can give back to the community haha
So a few things of note, and I wanted to articulate this right, those of you in the IRC have heard this rambling.
1) Watchdog. Do NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES try to kill a Kernel process. That's another sure-fire way to trip the eFuse, and brick your phone, save you have a SMD compatible JTAG for the FPGA. (If that last part went over your head, DEFINITELY do not attempt)
2) Kernel file "pause_on_oops". If a kernel module is improperly loaded, modified, or unloaded, it will cause a lot of wonky stuff to happen in the kernel. On any kernel panic, the kernel halts instead of dropping to a debugger. It also sets a few flags that stop the kernel from booting, and that in turn sets more flags that stop booting, ad nauseum.
This still leaves bugs and stuff to explore. Race conditions, buffer overflows and the likes are still likely targets.
@royolpunk
Have to agree on that, i'm not too fussed tbo but i'd like to fix the blue camera tint.

Obviously, having source code once we root will be of enormous help in developing quality kernels and ROMs (like cyanogenmod!), but won't help rooting right now. All the doors are locked, but now we know who lives inside
So speaking of race conditions, is there any point to exploring the bootloader-to-recovery race condition (via messing with the sdcard slot) that allowed the Droid Incredible to be root (even before Unrevoked figured out a general HTC exploit kit), or are we talking apples to oranges?

You guys are all greedy!

I'm tired of people bashing on these devs hard work, they have given so much and all you all can do is say how unstable the ROM is, if you don't like it don't use it. Because of your greediness it appears camcory has left, he will not receive messages and his most popular ROM thread has been closed. From now on if you run into a problem with a ROM, state the problem, not you personal opinion about the ROM. Why do you all think jocala doesn't dev anymore?
I'm done ranting for now but you all need to start respecting these devs before we lose them!

That's fine what you're saying but again, this is where I have issues. If all people want to hear is how great they are or their work is always perfect they are doing it for the wrong reasons. People who do nothing but praise are called "fanboys" and don't contribute any useful info. If people are name calling or trashing somebody's work that's different. Anytime I mention issues I am always specific with what they are.
I have mentioned my gratitude many times but if that's all that people want to hear these forums are useless.

Like I said, state the issue nothing more. If people just stated the issue they have, then you wouldn't be hearing my rant. Its like going to McDonalds and complaining that the food isn't cooked the way you like it.

This has been a problem on XDA for as long as I have been a member. There are a lot of people who just complain, or constantly say " fix it, fix it, fix it." Not everyone does this, but many do. Too many people forget that the Dev's are not obligated to release a rom or to even update it publicly. They do this for many different reasons. I agree state an issue, but part of the problem comes when an issue is overstated because people refuse to read. There is no reason to mention an issue 30 + times. Same goes for the questions that get repeated. Too many people want someone to come running to their aid. We were all noobs at one time, we learn by reading posts and trying ourselves. I just recently reread the rules and all of this is talked about there. I always appreciate our Developers and the work they release, even if it never leaves Alfa stage. I also appreciate the members who take the time to help others and offer good suggestions on a fix, or workaround. We should all keep in mind this question, if I were a Dev, would I want to deal with this?
End rant.

You are dead on about people harping on the same old crap all the time or saying "when is it going to be fixed?" They should just be ignored and eventually they will go away hopefully. It also doesn't help when so many senior members who had good comments to offer most of the time are now gone.

It's true that a lot of people don't do their research before asking questions. But what I find even worse is when people respond with answers like 2 weeks or bashing the person asking the question. I find it would be easier to just ignore or direct them to q&a rather than cluttering the development threads.

Some people respond with "2 weeks" when ETAs are asked by another user, which is considered a major faux pas. I do agree however that when ETAs come up no one should respond. I also don't think anyone should be bashed however it's hard when you get some who just flat demand things and act like a Dev is asleep at the wheel or negligent for not posting a fix or update. It's hard to believe people actually will say stuff like "when you gonna fix it, huh?" Yes, that kind of English too.
It's like a hundred dswaggz going around asking them to fix the problem (originally he asked for ports, hey just saying XD)
not all noobs are bad
I think this place is great! I haven't posted much because I'm not a dev. I have little to contribute other than my testing experiences and the occasional $5.
A year ago I would have told you rooting is pointless and custom ROMs are dangerous, but I've had a hugely positive experience with XDA and the roms these devs have released. Given the wide user appeal the site offers,(remember this is something for free, rare these days,) you can't hate on the people that don't get it.
It seems like XDA draws both those that have the open source mindset, and a very small minority of people that have no idea how a cell phone works, or could change a tire for that matter. They don't know what kind of time and effort goes into software and they don't care to know. These are people that can't help themselves. They see something cool and they want it.
Remember though, this is a small portion of people, so a better statement here, I think would be "occasionally, one of you is greedy."
Just my 2 cents.

And how hard can it be to click the thanks button? I do it for every OP when I use their ROM or their work or whatever. But when I have my own work viewed over 50 thousand times and downloaded over 1500 times, and receive 75 thanks, then have people ask if I can do this or that or fix this or that, most of THEM not clicking "thanks," I understand how frustrating it can be...

[Q] How to install mods on a new Xperia Z?

So yesterday I found out about this modification that allows me to take pictures with the volume key button (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266208). I really wanted this feature, but had no clue what "flash one of the MOD with CWM RECOVERY" meant.
It being my first time, I totally failed haha. I installed a bunch of apps including ROM manager, fastboot etc and I somehow got my phone rooted and CWM recovery working (I think), but update.zip was missing. Tried several ROMs on my SD card, which didn't work. Ultimately, I ended up putting my phone into the horrifying bootloop and I had to wipe the entire phone with software update.
My phone stats:
Model number: C6603
Android version: 4.1.2
Build number: 10.1.1.A.1.253
I have no clue if my phone is locked or unlocked.
My question: how do I install this modification, preferably with a step by step guide from a clean Xperia Z? Thanks in advance!

If you were on 253 from the beginning, you probably never rooted your device because there is no exploit for 253. To root 253 you have to downgrade to 434. Also use Check Root to confirm if your device is rooted before you go trigger happy with apps,

Listen dude. Just stop grasping at straws. The tool roots 253 just fine. The remount reboot problem is nothing to do with that. That problem is caused by the RIC service and is nothing to do with Doomlord's tool at all.
Do some research before embarrassing yourself further.
You are the one that decided to try and act clever by coming in here and questioning my post before you had even checked if I was correct or not, purely because I have corrected you for posting incorrect information in other threads. If you think that's "attacking" you, then feel free to report my posts and let a mod decide.

AOSP style roms are desperately needed on this phone., I love this device but hate the lack of development for it. I wish I was more talented with technology or I would try cooking something up myself. Anyway's I'm looking forward to your progress good man and I will be following your post's diligently.
What's the update here? It's cool with me if things are still "two weeks" away. But whether or not it's still actually happening would be nice to know. I'm just hoping that Zombienaut still wants to make this happen.
On a similar vein, if one were a complete newb, does anyone know how that person could learn enough to be able to tweak AOKP for addition to this phone? How much work would it take to learn, and how/where would one go about getting started?
It's been a long and frustrating ordeal. Trying to work on this while having a job and going to school is making it take longer then expected. Progress is seemingly well, however. The ROM boots, but without working data, WiFi, etc. So please keep patient.

[AOKP][4.4]Testers w/ADB Experience wanted

Okay folks... new Android means new AOSP versions and AOKP is no exception.
Team Kang, while continuing efforts on 4.3 is also hard at work trying to get even a booting build of 4.4.
This is where I need Sprint folks to come in and help.... since my other half will no longer give up the S4.
Until it's stable I'm keeping it on SXTP Developers:

I'm looking for folks with ADB experience primarily to help us catch things so we can keep grinding on with this.
As a reminder, you flash at your own risk - you've been warned!

Until you see it on XDA do not assume it's a daily/stable build!

Easiest way from ADB:

I'm asking because each variant has slight changes and I need to coordinate those with the dev spearheading the S4/S3 bringup for 4.4. Those logs, even if redundant, may help identify something. In short, I'd rather have too many logs than none.
I'll continue to share any updates on other variants as applicable with each build. Should give a close expectation of ours. And I got upset because a fair expectation was given on these builds... and yet it was still asked. I'll apologize for being excessive in my response, but my point still stands as detailed in this post.

I tried to download the newest one, but kept getting unsuccessful. Will try again. Very anxious to see what this performs like.
Edit1: I finally got it to download. Everything seems to work except camera and MMS. Camera will open when first booted but after first use it seems to not connect. And if you try to take a pic through SMS it does the same thing. I'll put logcat up after I finish installing windows onto my laptop. Also idk if anyone has been using a gapps. But I flashed one I found and it seemed to fix the su root issue.
Edit2: Just realized that SD card wont mount either. Don't know if its the card or not, but I do know it does mount with PAC man rom

New build up. May - emphasis on may - have voice/data now. This will confirm whether it does or not.

Removing the model check, got it booted on the SCH-R970C
3G/LTE seem unstable. But working
Selecting a Wallpaper is broken. Because after swiping around and click the wallpapers, it will reboot.
SMS only works with Wifi disabled.
Do we have any Gapps we can use on this?
Also pulled just a error log during a part of my testing. I don't think it will help much but its less junkfilled then verbose log. I could do a debug log if needed.
I'll PM it to you.
