Hi,
I recently got an xperia z from my parents contract. They have filled out the unlock sim form. This was important as i will be travelling for a year next month.
I was just wondering if i will have problems updating the phone with a different non o2 sim card in the phone? I know nothing about mobile phones and my friend is telling me that even though the phone will be unlocked it will still be an o2 phone and i will need to get updates from o2. If this is true then will this mean i wont be able to get updates eg 4.2 when im in a different country using a non o2 sim?
Thanks,
Phil.
You won't have any problems, unless your bootloader is unlocked. Even so you can flash stock roms with flashtool or the new sony flash tool.
Unlocking the phone only deactivates the SIM lock - nothing else. Updating the phone will be exactly the same as before.

Sorry, but this is my first smart phone. I have never had an update. Will it just be using pc companion?
I ask because my friend says that i will have to wait for o2 to release updates for my phone as it will be running an o2 version of the software. He seems to think that this will cause be problems when abroad as i need to be in the UK to receive updates?. If this is the case, can i not just download the updates through o2 on my laptop when abroad? Tbh i just want my phone stock but up to date.
Until now i have not had the new update. Pc companion and the sony website both say that i am up to date, even though i am running .350.
Is this because i have to wait for an o2 release?

As far as i know sony doesn't do OTA, so yes only trough the companion
At the moment I am unable to get the new update via pc companion or through the sony website. They both say my phone is up to date.
Is this because i have to wait for an o2 branded update? If so, does anybody know how i will receive it?
I am a little worried now that I will be unable to receive updates to my phone when I am travelling whilst keeping it stock.

You could flash a FW from the country you will be travelling to (if it's available there yet) or you could flash a generic from the country of your choice, NL and DE seem to be the quickest to get updates. The updates in future will come over the internet via PC Companion irrespective of the SIM card you have. Just ring your original provider and ask them to remove the sim lock because you travel a lot.

I recently bought the Xz on the 3 network (uk) and straight away wanted to get on aosp but this was shortly lived when my bootloader unlock status said no!!! Arghhh!!!
After moving from the HTC one X this was a massive disappointment as I loved the IceColdJelly Rom from Lord.
So I started to look into how to get around this and came across a solution online saying you need to network unlock the device officially from your network operator this would then change the bootloader unlock allowed status to yes.
Great but I cannot get this yet as 3 state you need to be over 1 month into the contract witch I sadly am not.
I then done a bit of thinking and wondered if I managed to get onto the official unbranded software from Sony via an official method I may be able to get round it.
To do this I:
Rooted for locked bootloaders
Installed twrp for locked bootloaders
Installed one of the roms for locked bootloader (353?)
Then plugged my phone into the computer and started up the Sony update software and this gave me the option to update my phone to the latest 434? Software (something I couldn't get while on the branded stock rom)
So update done I reset the phone from within settings and preyed my bootloader unlock allowed status had been changed from no to yes. But no it hadn't .
So what's the point of this post?
Well I'm sharing my way of getting the latest update from Sony officially if anyone would ever want to do it that way.
But also I'm opening this thread to discuss if anyone had unlocked their network limitations and found that it changed the bootloader unlock allowed status.
Thank you for your time
Hi.
I renewed my contract with Three and got the XZ, and like you was hoping it had the unlockable bootloader. I knew I had the contract I needed anyway and was prepared to do whatever I had to do if the bootloader was properly locked. In the end the only thing I could do was get rid of the phone and buy one that was Sim free and bootloader unlockable. I bought it from Phones for you and checked the bootloader status before I handed over any money.
When I had my "old" XZ, I put it up for sale and in the hope of getting it sold easier I had it sim-unlocked by Three and I flashed UK unbranded firmware. As expected, unlocking the Sim and flashing unbranded firmware did not change the bootloader status.
In short, the only way to run something like CM is to sell your blower and buy one with a suitable bootloader.
Ah well that sucks surely it's not down to the carrier to impose these limitations apon the end user? There must be a way around this even if it is contacting Sony, surely if I the owner of my phone want to. Unlock my bootloader it's for me to decide, not the middle man.

yes this locked. What does service update sony?
It is official Sony software for your PC... it will help you repair your phone software.
Connect phone to computer using USB cable and follow on screen prompts.
Search Google for either sus or PC companion.

Hi. I am new on this forum and don't know much about rooting and the requirements of such high complex stuff. But I have an ATT unlocked phone which I use on t mobile. It's lacks WiFi calling, whxih I want, and the signal is probably 1 bar lower than it should. Not to mention I can't update my software since ATT servers for the update won't communicate with my phone since I'm no longer and ATT customer and they are generally very slow with their updates
Anyway is it possible to put a international ROM, say the new marshmallow ROM, or even a T-Mobile ROM on my phone? How would one do that? I am aware of odin as I use it to update my software from time to time. Do I just get the international or T-Mobile ROM and flash it?
Thanks.
No way , at&t have a locked bootloader, ):
international..any day..dont even think abt it
Been trying to do this forever. Still no luck.
Anyway to unlock the bootloader? Would my best bet to sell the phone and just get the unlocked one?
AT&T no way , yes get the 925f
Can this be done?
Does it work on all 4G bands.
Better still can it be flashed with a firmware to get rid of anything to do AT&T?
Ta
Been awhile since I posted this.
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to flash say a Cambodian ROM on an AT&T Note 5?

no idea. i believe i have an at&t note 5 based on what i've discovered after googling my bootloader / pda / csc / baseload version codes, although there's nothing on my hardware/software to suggest anything at&t related. whatever has been done to it means it's working ok for calls and data (except it always says '4g' in the notification bar, even when i'm in an area without 4g!)
I'm trying to find whether i can upgrade to MM (or Nougat when available) without destroying my phone
Does your note 5 have at&t branding on the back?
When you go in sotfware info what rom have you got?
have you ever had any ota updates?
what sim card are you using?
Thanks

Only got it about 2 weeks ago from HK via ebay. No reason to suspect anything until looking at updating to MM. My model type in 'about device' shows as SM-N920F which, after some searching around, doesn't exist. Then unearthed the phone is rooted and possibly from USA via a China unlock process etc etc. Anyway, in answer to your questions:
1. No AT&T logo
2. Software looks stock (i.e. no names that would suggest custom rom)
3. No OTA updates (but then I'm rooted so wouldn't expect any - I believe)
4. 3 (three)

Thanks for the reply.
I was looking on ebay at a 64gb but they all seem to be at&t refurbished. Whatever that means.
I was told an at&t wont update with their sim being in the phone. That's why I asked about yours.
Do you have a link to the one you got?

Hello, guys! I`m using my s6 at&t in Ukraine, and it works perfectly with my sim. Firmware is 5.1.1 Is it possible to install 6.x and it is possible to get my phone locked to at&t after installin it? thanks in advance
I doubt that if your phone is a unlocked phone also known as a sim unlock phone that is that it can be used with any carrier would get locked due to a software update. Since you mentioned that you are in Ukraine and if it works with the local sim that means that the phone is a sim unlocked phone and would probably not be affected by a software update.
Also just use odin to update the phone
