Good Kernels? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
I don't consider myself a noob when it comes to android but I know near nothing with kernels! So I have a few questions;
1. How do you install them
2. Can I install one even when I'm running slimbean currently or will it replace it?
3 what is the best one to use?
I want to over clock
Thanks for your help

0. Wrong section of the forum to create a thread like this.
1. You flash it from recovery and you reboot.
2. You can flash any kernel on top of any rom, the current kernel you have will be replaced by the one you flash. Make sure the kernel is made for your ROM's Android version, so if the kernel is for Android 4.1, you can't make it work on Android 4.0 or 4.2, they must be compatible. Only a kernel that is made for Android 4.2 can be flashed on top of a Android 4.2 ROM.
3. There is no best one, the differences between the kernels available are small, so the best one is the one that every single person thinks is best and it suits them. My advice is read the OP of each kernel's topic to know what are their features and try them one by one. You can't break anything. If after experimenting you want to return to SlimBean's kernel , just flash the ROM again and everything will be the same as before as every ROM includes a kernel. Some kernels use LiveOC , others use direct steps to OC. Some can say that Devil kernel is the best, others can say Semaphore, CyanKernel, Mackay, Fishears and other kernels available, but the choice is yours, because they will say whatever they think is best because they like the features and are used to how the kernel reacts and feels when the user uses the phone. The same goes with ROMs.

Looking for rom opinions please.

Hi guys,
So ive reached the point where its time to put a rom other than the stock rom that im currently running. Now ive looked on the forums here and can see that there are several variations floating around. Really id like opinions on what is considered a stable rom to run. I dont use my phone for anything fancy, occasionally play a game, listen to music and all the obvious stuff. Any suggestions/ opinions would be most welcome.
Many thanks
Jim

Cyanogenmod 7.Just flash it and use it.
Emanon ROM would be suitable for you; it's the closest one to stock ROM.
CyanogenMod is a completely different ROM than stock ROM; and maybe you'll have some difficulties in adapting to its features and bugs (if any).
Sent from my GT-S5570 using Tapatalk
if u like the looks and interface of stock rom use emanon rom
and if u want a completely new rom with extra features go with cm7 rom
Thanks guys, have used cm rom in the past on my x10 mini pro. So it would seem the cm7 would be the way to go! Many thanks for the input guys. I am assuming odin is the best way forward with flashing a new rom?

custom ROMs for the galmin are not flashable via Odin. Only stock ROMs can be flashed through Odin. Mininum requirement for CM7 is 2.3.4.. If you have GB 2.3.4 then you can directly flash clockworkmod recovery.

Please do follow special instructions from the Devs.. Happy Flashing!

These kind of threads will be the death of me.
They crop up every other day: an inexperienced guy asks a question, and tons of 'users' jump at the chance to start waxing lyrical about their pet roms.
Let me ask you a question: what makes you think that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that your pet is the right one for the OP? It might be the right one for you because it suits your needs. Are you sure that the OP has the same needs?
Another thing: you have given all the roms a go, so you are informed enough to judge the merits of the particular rom compared to others? I'm as great a flashoholic as the next man here, and I haven't tried them all. I seriously doubt that you have.
The only answer to 'which is the best rom' would be something along these lines:
1. there are light roms, and there are full roms
2. light roms are light because (explanation)
3. full roms OTOH contain (explanation)
4. light GB roms are the following: (links - mind you, not one link, but links)
5. full GB roms (links)
6. repeat the above two steps for the ICS
And let the OP decide for himself.

Best Ice Cream Sandwich Rom ???

I am rooting the phone for the first time so I want to know which is the best available ICS rom which has least bugs. I need basic things to work such as wifi and bluetooth. I want all the steps to complete the procedure. It will be really helpful if any one could give me some links. I could have searched but I have no idea which one is the best so please help me.

I have not yet started I need links to begin the process right from the scratch.
All ICS roms have bugs. Look in Dev thread for CM9 or AOKP.
Spend at least 4 hours reading how to prepare and install, 2 hours reading what to do when unexpected things happen during/after flash, and 1 hour being sorry wasting your and others time on such impossible question usually followed by biased opinions.
Don't flash ICS. wait for stable JB rom

In terms of which ROM is best, unfortunately there is no answer.
Each rom is different (obviously) so people prefer different roms that fit their different needs.
I'd personally recommend something like SlimICS, TiramiSLIM, or DarkyROM Black Edition.
Slim ICS is a cut down version, no extravagant features.
TiramiSLIM has an easy installation process (if already rooted) and has lots of customization options.
DarkyROM is one of my favourites, but I just upgraded to Jellybean.
You want to know all the steps to installation?
One of the best guides I've found is for the Team 3xtr3me ICS333 rom.
Link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25722239#post25722239
It goes through installation of a rooted Gingerbead (2.3) rom via odin, which is the part most ROM installation guides assume you have already done.
From there you should be able to follow almost any ROM's guide for installation.
Hope this helped.
Don't flash another thing than Cyanogenmod nightlies.
Maybe AOKP. But prefer cyanogenmod. Accelerometer still broken on AOKP. No point of it. (Please don't comment temple runners.)

As kernel, flash latest devil kernel. Don't think another choice. Every kernel is nice. Semaphore is as nice as decil. But devil has more customization choices.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
When you're a bit into the flashing thing you coult try RemICS, which has best design for me and is very smoothe and fast as well.
CYANOGENMOD 9 !!! The best of all no bug no problem very fast and I use it for months with devil3.99 kernel
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592131
Hmm... to lazy to find out how to root, what's the difference (if significant) between roms, what to do when that pesky bootloop happen,.... so just start yet another thread for the bragging hordes?
"...... rom is smooth, bugfree, snapping fast, will make you breakfast? , has looongest bat. life,... "
Advice you to spend your time more wisely and enjoy the vast amount of knowledge already posted here at your disposal.
I prefer a plain vanilla ice cream
sandwich with maple syrup, the rum is an acquired taste, but captain Morgan is great for starters.
Using GT-I9000 my sent Tapatalk 2 from.
I use DarkKnight 5.5 with DevilKernel and I found it very stable and smooth. For me it is the best ICS ROM for SGS.

You can try AOKP. I've been using it since a month and I can say that it's quite smooth and well developed. Try it and u won't regret.
My personal favourite. Slim ICS
But look at this benchmark thread and decide for yourself.

I've tried several ICS roms and, for me, the better one is Remics. Version 1.3 is already out, but I'm in 1.2 and I don't feel any need of upgrading it!

[ROM] Helly Bean [4.1.1] (8/17/12) - Vibrant - DerTeufel1980

Please note! Due to certain issues, as of 08/26 I have moved on to the official CM10. If time permits, I'll update this OP, but not making promises.
WARNING: This ROM probably still has intermittent emergency dialing issues. Do not use it for a daily driver when you're out or could need 911 or any emergency number. If you STILL choose to use it at those times, it's your own fault!

Build 08/20 is showing as available. I don't recommend dl'ing it as its caused many to have baseband issues. I've contacted Der to look into this, which I'm sure he will when time permits.
(08/17)New build available.
This is md5 sum:
cd703c25d560ce4c3d33cbfcab724427
Changes:
- compiled from latest sources, but still using /datadata (going to be change probably soon)
- renamed the two navbar menus
- added Facebook sync (you have to install Facebook app before)
- added i9000b to supported devices
- (hopefully) fixed modem/baseband issue
- added possibility to install devil kernel apps to installer
- fixed mms for showcase
http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/Helly_Bean/rom/
Wipe not needed if flashing from a previous version, but is highly recommended. Be sure to flash the add-on also.
TF here.....I found, as often is the case, I had to flash the ROM and let it boot up, then go back in and flash the add-on. After that.....golden!
(08/15)New test build up now.
Why test build?
- Because I have added two new devices, for which I don't know if it is working well for them
- I have fixed the navbar not appearing, but now there a two menus in system which both are named the same. One is for enabling, the other for customization. I am working at integrating the two into one menu, but I did not get it yet.
- ffc support for Vibrant
Install process has not changed, but if you are coming from another ROM/kernel than mine, you should create a folder devil at your sdcard, place a file named device into it, and write your device name in it, valid names are:
i9000
cappy
vibrant
fascinate
mesmerize
showcase
users of mesmerize and showcase have to do this!
Other changes:
If devil app(s) are not installed, the menu is not displayed under system settings (many thanks to phillbring for coding me this).
md5sum is: 3b11a106529f10236d2e6139416bc346
http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/test/
Wipe not needed if flashing from a previous version, but is highly recommended. Be sure to flash the add-on also.
From TF: I love the Cid theme from Annex, but flashing his most recent version sent me into bootloops. I'm assuming he will update as soon as he has a chance.
(08/13) New instructions for flashing. Wipe not needed if flashing from a previous version, but is recommended. Be sure to flash the add-on also.
The files can be found at:
http://rootaxbox.no-ip.org/derteufel/Helly_Bean/
Install instructions:[/SIZE]
Coming from any other rom:
- make sure to have gingerbread bootloaders. (Remember, Google is your friend)
- wipe data/factory reset
- flash allinone.zip
- reboot recovery
- flash allinone.zip again
- flash Helly_Bean_AddOn or Helly_Bean inverted AddOn
coming from previous version:
- flash allinone.zip
- flash Helly_Bean_AddOn or Helly_Bean inverted AddOn
Attention: this is still a test. Don't flash it if you don't know what you are doing/how to get back!
For a new feature cherry-picked last night, go to settings --> system

You'll find download links and faq on this site.
The usual back-up, complete wipe (if this is the first time flashing this ROM), flashing of files and fix permissions applies.
***********
One thing I noticed is that if you follow the normal flash procedure, it can bootloop, or at least appears as though it is. One way to fix that is to flash the ROM only and boot up you phone. Then go back into recovery and flash the add-on. That has worked every time it happened to me.
You can find the changelog here:
http://hellybean.site11.com/changelogg.html
For mirrors, please take a look at the thread. if you don't find any, just ask in the thread.
I really didn't want to mention this, but lack of experience by some members seems to require it:
If you are unsure of ANYTHING that goes with flashing a ROM, do research first. If you honestly can't find the answer, ask questions. We are not responsible for any action that happens to your phone.

Now, from TFordham (you can just call me TF):
I've been using this ROM for some time now, and really happy with it. Personally, I think this is the best JB ROM out there. I find it very smooth, and for an early release, quite stable.
I do want to point out that I'm not a dev at all. The Helly Bean ROM is from DerTeufel1980 and his team. I put this up since his ROM is being mentioned in another ROM forum, but figured it might as well have its own home
Something else I want to be clear about is that I have no technical knowledge on creating ROMs, kernels or other things of this nature. I simply wanted to let other Vibrant owners know this ROM is out there. This fantastic XDA community is the place to ask, as there are plenty who know FAR more than I. In addition, DerTeufel1980 is active in this forum, ago if there are issues, he will help address them. While I appreciate the "thanks" button being hit, it is his comments in this thread that should be thanked.

HellyBean 0801 is definitely the fastest JB ROM for the Vibrant because of the included Devil 1.1.0 kernel and the use of the faster datadata partition. All Vibrant users should donate to Derteufel1980 for his amazing kernel and now ROM support. He is the only ICS/JB kernel developer we have right now so we must treat him right.
How does this differ from the CM10 v8? Other than the kernel of course.

Keeping in mind I'm far from the most tech savvy flasher out there, like I mentioned, I don't see a huge difference in most of the JB ROMs. I just happen to like this one a lot. Others may be able to get into far more detail on why it's good compared to other (or vice versa, for that matter, if they feel that's the case).

I think that DerTeufel has to be the OP.
Did you ask him before put this?
Are you able to answer questions about Kernel, ROM, Modems, UV, NL etc?
Update the proper content of our device?
This is why the "leader team" or the Dev has to be the OP.
Not trolling, just saying: If we want a better Topic it has to be created by DerTeufel.

Can someone quickly summarize how to get here from Stock? I had done it a long time ago to the ics roms and can't do it again... I"m missing some major step.
So far:
heimdall to stock
root update.zip
install rommanager and then cwm install and re-boot to flash update.zip -> cwm recovery.
Flash this rom
-> results in boot loop.
What am I missing?

Some questions before burn again my phone XD

Well,
Rigth now i have android 4.0 in my captivate, but it has a lot of bugs, with the audio, music, and sometimes just close the app just because!!
I decided to change the rom for another newer, but i don't know a lot of this world, and i have some questions that somebody experiment can easily answer.
When i dont know a lot of what the kernel do for the phone, but do i really need change the kernel?? Because the last time i tried with semaphore but i briked my phone.
If i need to change the kernel, could some body tell me te more stable for android 4.1 or 4.2
Second question.
I want another ROM which one is the more stable and with better performance, i dont want any spectacular, but with a good performance and all working its enougth for me.
And the last one.
How can i save my apps to reinstall all again, i mean i'm working bad piggies and where is may water, and i dont want to lose my levels jaja.
Thanks again for your time its really a lot of help for me.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
No need to change kernel.
CM10.0 stable rom. It is 4.1.2 os.
You can read other threads on how to use Titanium backup or other tools to preserve your user data and user apps. Don't try to restore system apps to a new rom, though. if you have given google permission to backup your data, it may already be restored when you reinstall the app from google play.
You will still want to do a full factory wipe, followed by flashing the correct gapps package. you can find all the instructions and links in the CM10.0 thread in the captivate development forum.
If you want to go to 4.2, I've found the CM10.1 nightlies to be very stable. There's a separate thread for it with links, etc.
Thanks for your answer, and thanks for the extra of read my post because my english is too bad jaja.
Another question, why the developers create new kernels if we can work with the same for a lot of roms, i mean what things make better some kernel from another??

or less stable . .
driving new features or higher performance is often, but not always, accompanied by a loss of stability, at least for a few revs.
imho, the base kernel in cm is excellent for someone whose chief concern is simplicity and stability, without a burning desire to be at the bleeding edge.
that said, the semaphore and others do have some added tweaks that can do just what you said.

When you flash cm10, you will be flashing a new rom that includes a new kernel that is different than the one you have now.
I thought you were asking about flashing a kernel as a standalone, such as semaphore kernel, rather than a complete rom.
When I said you do not need to change the kernel, I meant that once you flash a complete cm10 rom, you do not need to change the kernel.
For a ROM, I highly reccomend sephhi's captivating (4.2.2 with xperia theming and very much aimed at performance and battery life) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2057574
This is the answer!!!
