[Q] Battery Life While Running 3G Dongle Modem - Nexus 7 General

Hello,
Have anyone checked out the battery life of nexus 7 while running any 3G Dongle Modem via OTG cable (powered by n7)?
Just wanted user experiences regarding this.
Thank You.

I was using my N7 as a sat-nav for a 3 hour long journey connected up via my dongle and I had 40%ish battery life left when I arrived. That's my only experience so far. I was rather impressed.

Charging while in use

My battery percentage actually drops while I have the TP plugged in and I'm using it. I'm not talking heavy use... just browsing the web. Is this normal? Every other device I've ever owned will charge while it's in use.

Nope, its not normal
What version of Android are you running?
Make sure it is the latest version (CM9 Alpha 2) as the original release (0.5) had a problem with charging
Also are you using the original Charger/USB cable?
And finally, try a different wall outlet if possible?
I've been using the latest nightly but just switched to KANG. Its been the same with both ROMs. Original charger and the same result on a different outlet...

Also, it only does this in android, not in webos.

I bought mine used (off ebay) and the usb cable that came with it didn't work properly. I went to Fry's and bought a Belkin USB Cable to replace it. Works just fine. In fact, it charges faster now...
I purchased mine used as well. It charges perfectly in webos so I don't think the USB cord is the problem.
My battery actually goes down when its plugged in and I'm actively using android.

Same thing happens with me I am presently using cherrykang, switching to classic nerd butta tonight in hopes of fixing this
I think it's an android bug. Same problem here. I've noticed this is a ICS issue. GB roms roms were unaffected in this way.

Who keeps their N7 tethered all the time

Do you find you use way more data because the N7 is more powerful or the same as your phone? And anyone use Bluetooth tether or just foxfi?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Bluetooth tether is the way to go, it uses a lot less battery on your phone. Data usage should be the same, unless you're streaming movies etc.
I have mine Bluetooth tethered to my HTC Desire HD all the time while away from the house, at work, etc.
Great battery life outweighs some better connection speed while away from a charging source. Wifi works but drains the battery considerably faster, and broadcasts the fact that I'm using wifi to others.
I use the bluetooth to tether function all the time from my iPhone 4S (jailbroken Mywii bluetooth tether)
I'm keeping my N7 tethered (Bluetooth) to my Galaxy S III (SGH-i747) all the time when I'm not at home on Wifi...
Data usage is about the same as on my phone alone.
So bluetooth tether saves battery for which device? I've been WiFi tethering my S3 i9300 on my commute but found it really puts a toll on the S3 battery life. It would be great if bluetooth tethering is more efficient for battery on my S3 while still holding a relatively fast data connection.
What app are you guys using in order to bluetooth tether?

both really but i've noticed drastic improvement when using the bluetooth tether compared to wifi on my SGS3.
Since I got my s3 and n7 I've been using foxfi with wife and my battery is great. I have yet to try bluetooth but after reading some of the replies in this thread I'll have to try it out.

As soon as I step out the house I fire up hotspot tethering on my gnex and leave it like that until I come back home!

to tether bluetooth just get pdanet for tablets and foxfi. U will have to pair them and set it up.
You dont need an app from what i am aware, i just tried it upon hearing about it via this thread. But its in settings, under tethering &hotspot (on your phone). I just tried it and it works great!
I tether to a Samsung i777. Noticeably hits the battery life but not like wifi tether does. Can still get a full day out of the i777 doing this

Maybe for the folks who do not have the hotspot feature on their plan... I'm using the built in feature way easier like that!

For browsing needs, the data speeds are excellent. Bluetooth tethering really maintains the phone's battery life.
I took my phone off its charger at 6am, biked to work and tethered it at 8. My HTC Desire HD has considerably less battery power than your S3 does, however I've only used 10% of my total battery life.
I need to get a BT tether app then as the built in one on my bionic won't connect but will pair with my nexus.

I use Wifi Tether on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus. It already gets poor battery life so I have it plugged in every chance I get. I also don't have Internet at my apartment so it's the only way I can get connected other than when I'm at work.
I use my Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 (t-mo) at work (we don't have wifi since all our computers are wired) for my Nexus 7. I use about the same amount of data as of yet.

So which apps are you using?
I am having problems to connect my rooted t989 with my n7 via bt.
Bluetooth or WiFi and if Bluetooth, how'd you set it up? I'm on Tmo as well.

Longer Power cord

Any suggestions on this? It seems my nexus is very picky about only using the stock cord. I couldn't even get it to charge with my galaxy S2 cord. Charge icon was on but didn't charge.
Thoughts?

I use a USB 3.0 Cable extender that I got for like $3 off eBay. Charge time is the same and the cord is 6ft longer
Search and you will find a great thread on cables and chargers and what works and doesn't and why.
I picked up a couple of these when they were on discount ($9.95 at the time). LONG 6ft cables and they work great for not only the Nexus 7 but other devices as well (Raspberry Pi)...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OZMWUS
Even at the current price of $16.31 I would not hesitate to buy one.
Thanks guys, I will try that. I hate this little cord.

I used $random cable in the house, works fine. Just make sure you use the OEM charger, unless the cable is super crap it should just work.
Im using my old charger from my blackberry curve 8300 with a mini usb to micro usb adapter on it because it was the longest charger I have. It worked to charge my original evo 4g, it charges my evo lte, and it charges my nexus 7 as well.
Here: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5458&seq=1&format=2
I paid $3.94 total. Should have been smart and ordered two (other half wants one) but I wanted to be sure it works. It's great and plenty long enough.

I've got a couple of 2mtr cables with right angle micro usb plugs, cheap as chips off eBay and they work fine.

Battery issue on cm10.1

I know everyone is starting to use 10.2 but I'm enjoying the rock hard stability of 10.1 at the moment. My only issue is that the battery charges sooooo slow its ridiculous. Is there any way to fix this? Even if I have to edit some random file myself? Its so slow if I'm playing a game it will actually discharge faster than it can charge it. And before you ask yes I'm using the stock charger. I'm tempted however to use the charger from my o.g. transformer as I think it has a higher output rating but I'm concerned about frying my battery.
Sent from my MB886 using xda premium
I heard that if you charge phones in airplane mode that it will charge faster. I don't know if it will solve your problem but it is worth a shot.
Sent from my Atrix HD using Tapatalk 4
So I decided to use the transformer charger. Seems to be helping a little. At least its still charging while I play rr3. Any further input would be appreciated tho. Also charging in airplane mode is not an option. I need to be able to receive texts and phone calls.

Does anyone use this phone with LTE?

I hear battery life is excellent... On 3g. Usually using LTE makes the phone take a nose dive on battery life when using it because that is exactly what happened to me with my note 2.
So is anyone using it with LTE? And if yes, what is the battery life like?
I'm seriously considering getting it day 1 but I need to know!
I'm using LTE at the moment. No root, using T-mobile, and my battery life is amazing. I have my bluetooth headset connected to it all day and I can easily go 24 hours without needing to recharge it while streaming music for most of the day and watching videos randomly while browsing the web and light gaming.
I never use wi-fi either.

Using LTE the whole time as I got 7GB of data, I can say that this phone is just beastly, can't ask for more from LG, just updates!

I'm on T-Mobile LTE in Oregon. No issues here. Definitely the best phone I've had. I dropped it in the toilet last night too (accidentally) and it's still going without issue. I did turn it off and put it in rice overnight. The only thing I could see giving this up for is the G Pro 2.

I was worried when I changed from Sprint to Tmo last night, but after testing lte from my house is the SW burbs of chicago, I am getting 30 megs down and 10 up!!!
the best ever on Sprint and ATT for me was about 10 down and 3 up..
Tmo for the win:good::good:

I use LTE constantly as a T-Mobile rep on this phone, demoing with speedtest as well as surfing and streaming music in downtime, and this thing outlasts my lumia 1520 on battery.
