Hello there,
I've tried Googling and searching these threads, and I can't seem to find anyone else with the same problems as me, so if anyone can help me I'd be really grateful!
Basically, I've had a rooted G1 for about 6 months now, started off using JesusFreke, went on to CM and now I'm running the latest ROM with an 8 gig class 6 SD card. Anyway, everything runs smoothly except for a few niggly things. As far as I can remember I've always had most of these problems since rooting, and now they're worse than ever and starting to grate. I don't think it's my particular handset, as this is the second G1 I've had - although as I said, I haven't read of these problems with other people, so I don't really know. The problems in question are:
1. Email isn't very 'pushy' anymore - when I first got my G1, and for a while after first rooting, I was amazed at the push Gmail...I loved it, and it often worked faster than my computer email client could retrieve emails with its 5-minute interval. However, now my G1 seemingly only downloads emails when it can be bothered, and more often than not I'll do a manual refresh to find about 6 emails waiting for me. It's somewhat annoying really.
2. This is another major thing: Locale just won't recognise where it is anymore. I'll go into Locale for a few seconds, it'll snap on to 'home' or 'work', I'll come out and after about five minutes, it'll jump straight onto the default settings again. I'll do this again, and it happens again, etc. My phone knows where it is, as the maps work perfectly, and I'll even tried leaving GPS on all day, but to no avail. This is a major annoying niggle, and it seems to get better/worse with different updates. Has anyone experienced this? At the moment, Locale is virtually unusable.
3. Since I'm asking for help, the other little niggle is that to add shortcuts to my desktop takes an age...I'll do the longpress, click 'shortcut'...and then wait. And wait. As far as I can remember my phone's always done this (even the old one), but if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong it'd be really good.
In fact, if anyone can help me with any of the problems I've described I'd be really happy...the email and Locale thing are starting to become a big nuisance, and I'm starting to think about changing my handset over it, despite my love of Android, the G1 and the excellent CM updates that Cyanogen tirelessly sends out.
Thanks so much in advance,
Mark
I've never had any of those issues the gmail issue is the only one that woulg get me... what rom did you go with this time around?
Hi, I've just got the standard CyanognMod ROM with the latest 4.2.9.1
I have the same Gmail problem.
No idea how to fix it.
I'm going to say it's probably two things together:
1. Low memory. Having had your G1 for a while, you've installed lots of apps. Each app uses RAM. Low RAM makes everything sluggish and buggy. Uninstall anything you don't use regularly. Doing a full wipe and reflash of the htc update image, and then the latest cyanogenmod, will give you a blazing fast phone again, with everything working beautifully (but you'll have lost ALL your installed apps, saved sms, settings, etc.).
2. Task-killing app. You probably use Taskiller, Close Everything, or something like that. It is killing Gmail so it doesn't refresh, killing locale's location service so it doesn't know where it is, etc. Make sure you exclude ANYTHING that runs in the background constantly to work. Basically, anything that does something automatically, or generates a notification, or anything. Email, gmail, messaging, etc.
Not cool
You can't say niggly, only we can say niggly.
gmail push
there is a way to 'Set download frequency' by default.

'Niggly' is a word of Scandinavian origin which in this context essentially means 'irritating'. It is in no way related to similarly spelt offensive words, which is what I think you're getting at.
Anyway, many thanks to all those who posted help, I deleted a load of programs and it helped greatly. I had no idea that having too many apps, even in an apps2sd setup, would impact performance that much.
Still can't get Locale to work properly though. I'll delete a few more apps and see if that helps.

+10 pts for being spot on.
This is work in progress and I will update it for 7 days. Original posting can be found here
I'm sure you have heard someone telling you would spend way too much time with your smart phone. As if one could spend time with or without a tool. My phone, besides some rare occasions, is always with or near me. Yet it doesn't mean I spend time with it! I spend time with people, and I might spend my time spending time with using my smart phone to write an email. An if I spend time adjusting it to my needs or the latest desire aroused reading some blogs, so what? I do this for the sake of communication!
How come nobody understands that find difference in concept?
Day 1
25/05/2011, 11 a.m.:
Been checking my emails on the go twice, surfing on xda forum, chatting with the HTC support, writing an email to a friend, again checking my mails but also the market updates - what a pain to see there are no updates available for my installed apps. I check if it is not Sunday. No it’s not Sunday!
I discover how handy Evernotes can be. Copied an address out of the chat conversation and send it straight off to Evernotes. Must admit it was a little fight until I had marked the exact text line I wanted to have copied as it did not recognize it on its own. It would have blown me away had it read my thoughts.
I’m really thinking about one of those tables all the time. I’m kind of pissed somehow about the unfortunate fact there is no real handwriting recognition function on phones or tablets yet that really works - would be mind-blowing! I read the HTC Flyer does make advanced use of the stylus pen for note-taking somehow. I’ve seen some handwritten notes and compared them to the scribbling I am producing this very moment on real paper and there doesn’t seem to be that much of a difference.
However, I will have to type that later and I question this concept of me thoroughly doing it without giving up after a couple of minutes.
I’ve had way too many thoughts die due to the lack of an adequate and effective tool to digitalize my thoughts. I’m way much more impressed by my analogue brain-eye-arm-paper-to-key motion sequence I’ve happily produced as I realize I have really typed and added almost everything I wanted to say.
25/05/2011, 5.51 p.m.:
I wonder if I should give cyanogen latest night builds #87 a try again and get rid of my perfectly working Android Revolution ROM setup. I’m downloading, charging and backing up my phone for every eventuality...
Day 2
26/05/2011, 5.33 a.m.:
I have CyanogenMod Nightly Build #87 setup & running. Will see how it gets through the day. Fingers crossed the battery will not drain exaustingly.
26/05/2011,5.45p.m.:
In the mood for taking some screenshots and willing to do a brief review of my cyanogenmod 7 experiences...
Day 4
28/05/20011, 7.55.a.m.:
Can't hardly believe I haven't changed that much. Phone is working pretty fine, except there seems to be a problem between Fullscreen Caller ID and the call recorder that came with the modified kernel I flashed yesterday. I just won't use FSCI, instead, when I make a phone call it will try to use both the default dialer as well as the full screen dialer as the same time. The result is devastating: it will dial the number twice.
Day 6
30/05/2011, 1.53 p.m.:
Left home at 7.30 pm, battery went down to 51% by 12 a.m. and 32% by 2 p.m., whilst all I did were a few twitter & google mail updates, no phone calls, watching videos or other heavy-consuming processes.
Seems like the un-official CM7 nightly ROM I have flashed (Chezbell-cm7-20110529) is a battery killer! SetCPU is enabled, with a powersave governor profile activated when display is off, undervolted –25mA script running and I am nevertheless more than half-way out of battery within not even 7 hours – not really a full working-day yet!
Feeling unhappy and unsatisfied, after that the phone had been running so smoothly during the weekends ( some heavy 3G and EDGE-surfing in bad reception areas, gps navigation etc etc without a problem and far less battery drain). Phone was way more responsive with CM7 #87. Will switch to LORDmodUE 2.1 kernel tonight and see if it helps.
Day 7
31/05/2011, 3.13 p.m.:
I did it! I ruined it all! My sd card is totally erased! Holy frigging s’#!§t! What happened I still can’t recall exactly but I guess in any case I should learn to be more careful and most important: read and think before I act! I flashed a kernel while surfing the xda on my way home and now I don’t even find that stupid thread.
I guess it is a good point to stop my documentation now and draw my conclusions of my 7 days with cyanogenmod nightlies now.
Admins: please delete this thread. I've posted it to HTC DesireHD thread as I think it is more suitable...
I should have done a bit more research before encrypting my phone + 16GB SDCard!
There has been many complaints on the web about their devices showing noticeable slow down after they've encrypted their device. On top of this, some paid apps stopped working. Even more, some phones needed 3+ days to encrypt!
The phone has been running the encryption set up for over 4 hours now. And I'm feeling real uneasy about this...
Has anyone noticed any sluggishness after encryption? Also, how long did it take you to encrypt your phone?

So have you encrypted your phone? What are your thoughts and results? I'm very interested
Okay, so I'm new to the N6 but not XDA and device tweaking. I've been doing a lot of reading on the argument of performance increase on 5.1.1 unencrypted vs encrypted. Being as I have my device all set up as I like it I'd like some input from people experienced with the N6 on whether I would see a decent enough improvement to warrant unencrypting my device. Also, if the general census is pro unencrypting, is there a way to do a nandroid and then restore it after unencrypting so all I have to do is move my media folder files from my pc back to my device. Thanks in advance to anyone that helps me out with this query.

The slight benefit you probably wouldn't even notice is not worth the time and effort.

In order to decrypt, you must flash a kernel that doesn't force encrypt. Then you have to format data, resulting in a complete wipe of all data. The main, noticeable difference, is in download speed of large files. Otherwise, you won't see a difference. FWIW, I'm encrypted since launch.

Yea, I read up on the process, mainly I'm just looking for opinions on differences in performance. If I can get good enough results just tweaking my kernel like I have been then I don't really want to waste the little time I have outside of work having to wipe and setup my device all over again. On a side note, this thing hasn't had a bit of lag for me and has great battery with my current kernel settings using benzocore kernel.
Thanks for your input.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. I agree with the statement that you only really see it on large data transfers. And then it isn't that big a deal.
i havent decrypted. sure, read/write is a bit faster when decrypted. but i dont own a computer, and am not transferring much, ever. anyways, when it comes to performance, decryption has nothing to do with anything. my n6 is encrypted, and its one of the fastest n6 out there
Thanks guys, I assumed there wasn't much of a boost but I wanted to get some feedback from the forum. So far I've had nothing lag this thing, games, 4k video playback, excessive multitasking, nothing, not so much as a hiccup. I'm loving my N6.
Hey all,
I hope someone can help as I've searched this issue here and on Reddit and found various answers to the problem but no solutions. My brother has a Pixel 5 and the "media storage app" hogged around 50 gb of storage (same issue as Oneplus, however Oneplus solved it with an update) and filled the device. In my searches I found 3 answers; it's the media on the phone just displayed incorrectly, it is a wrong reading from the phone, or it is duplicated media which doubles the used storage (makes more sense as you'll see below).
Another Issue was Android System taking only 2 gb of space when normally it should be around 11-12 (as on my Pixel 2 and Pixel 4a), but this was solved with a wipe.
Due to various software issues with the phone I convinced him to do a complete wipe and reflashing of the stock firmware through Android flash tool. Also knowing Whatsapp caused weird issues in the past (with his Pixel 1) I also made him delete all previous backups from the phone and Google drive and clean his media (deleted only a few hundred mb) then back up again. The backup was 27 gb (not around 50 as media storage showed).
We did the wipe and flashing and everything worked well. But when we started restoring the data again and Whatsapp started restoring media then the Media Storage app started growing again, I am yet to determine if it is duplicating or not, but I am 100% convinced that there is something wrong because I checked my Pixel 2 with Android 11 and my Pixel 4a with Android 12 beta and in both cases this app barely takes a few mb of storage, all the other "media" is properly organized as it should be in it's respective category, on his phone though its all in "other".
I am really out of solutions other than wiping Whatsapp completely clean without media, only backing up chats, but this doesn't guarantee that all the media won't duplicate or fill up in Media storage again. At this point I'm thinking of waiting until Android 12 official but it also doesn't guarantee anything since it's not clear where the issue is coming from exactly.
Jeeeesze... Deep Six WhatsApp asap.
The trouble it's causing is the least of it's damage potential. No social media app should ever be allowed to run as an app on the phone, period!!!
WhatsApp itself is a high risk liability just like FB, Twitter etc. A proven destroyer of worlds.
You aren't the customer, you're are the product.
Censored and molded by someone else's twisted vision, and end game.
For a few dollars more... power/money is their only motivation. Mining and weaponing your data Inc.

I totally understand the risks of using whatsapp but we can't just stop using it when everyone else is. Also I'm not 100% sure it's ONLY whatsapp causing this, there might be other apps as well.

Hi,
I'm having the same issue on my Pixel 5 on Android 12. Tried downgrading to 11, factory resetting, etc.
The media storage process keeps increasing while I add files to the memory - let's say that I create a 4GB video, the media storage process is going to be almost as big in the apps section. It decreases equally when I delete something.
As a consequence the space occupied is nearly doubled (media + apps).
It seems to happen especially with media files such as pictures, audio and video files.
I reported the issue in the android 12 beta program feedback. However it sounds like it's not an urgent matter since it's been there for many releases and it is not clear how many people are affected.
I hoped that the last beta release - which is supposedly a mature one - would correct this bug and nope.
You can check out this article from Android central for a similar subject named "I couldn't stop this Android bug from eating up all of my phone's storage" Link here
I regret that I'm not bringing a solution yet.

Hey, the last beta update, march 22 solved the issue. I had submitted the bug in August 21 and the ticket status turned to "fixed" in February.
A bit long but I guess issues are sorted by priority. Still really happy with the outcome.
Maybe you can spread the word on threads you've checked out so people can try the last beta release or wait for the next stable one.
That's great to know we can rely on such a support from the beta team, props to them !

Hi, I'm presently having this Media Storage expansion issue with Op 9RT. Just to be clear, as you said, the Media Storage issue is now solved in your Pixel 5, right? Asking it now because if Google can solve it, then there is a feint chance that someday OnePlus will also solve it!!!

Hello, yes I confirm that the media storage problem has been solved for the Pixel 5 in the latest version, here is an article written about it after I contacted android central in April.
This pesky Android storage bug was finally fixed and we almost didn't know
"Ghost storage" that can't be freed up will no longer haunt users.

Hopefully it will be resolved for your OnePlus very soon.
Cheers

Nice!!! Pixel isn't officially sold in our country as yet, the few we have are actually unlocked devices from US and they are so damn expensive! So, I'm stuck with my 9RT for now....... Hopefully, OP resolves this, may be with Android 13!

You might be able to find one that's reasonably priced on Swappa. It's affiliated with XDA and is a reputable site. It's mostly peer to peer sales.

Thanks!!! Will look it up! But anything that comes from outside my country is a strict No for me as our Customs is notorious and they will tax me almost the same price of the handset if I import it!!!
