You should add tutorial for Linux Newbie that use other DE (XFCE / Xubuntu) cause different DE means different File Manager.
OR
You can add this line : "Use Nautilus File Manager if you don't have Nautilus, search it in Software Center then install it."
That's all i want to add, cause Linux newbie could confused if they install different DE.

You might want to try the applications I mentioned above. The bootanimation creator and bootanimation previewer.
if you're using CyanogenMod ROM, it's very recommended to try it first before really using it. You can try it via CyanogenMod Settings -> interface -> on boot animation choose preview then choose the bootanimation zip file.
if you want to do this manually, check this link. You would understand about the desc.txt. This is a vital part of the boot animation.

you can go to cyanogenmod settings -> interface -> look at boot animation tag -> preview. then you choose the bootanimation (the zip file) to see the preview. if the preview goes well, then you tap on 'Choose' and choose the bootanimation (the zip file).

You just need root explorer (must rooted first).
Go to /system/media. you'll find 'bootanimation.zip'. Make a backup of this file if you want.
Download the bootanimation you like, and rename the zip file to 'bootanimation.zip'.
Copy the new bootanimation.zip to /system/media. don't forget to mount r/w so you can change system folder.
Now, reboot. You'll see the new bootanimation.

I've found in somewhere said that the bootanimation may be in /data/local.
try to check it.
if you can't find it. try to Search it in Root Explorer.
Menu -> Search -> Type 'bootanimation'. gonna take some time because it search the whole place.

I've found that changing bootanimation on stock ROM kinda tricky.
but I found the trick, do it with your own risk.
try this:
1. Rename the downloaded file to 'bootanimation.zip'
2. Put on your SD Card
3. Open Root Explore go to system/bin
4. Find samsungloop, then move them to another folder
5. Copy bootanimation.zip to /system/media
6. In folder /system/media rename all files *.qmg to *.qm (bootsamsung.qmg & bootsamsungloop.qmg)
7. Reboot

Sorry but that is impossible... this mod is rom-specific thing so if you want to use this on your rom, you have to download your rom's source code and compile this mod for that rom.

I think so but you have to adjust overall layout in WaveView.java and re-draw(or just resize) resource png files.
about how to use this patch
Frankly speaking, I don't have any knowledge about linux so I don't want to write about that but...
Basically, the process is like this :
1) download android source code : there are so many great guides about this...
2) download my patch and put it to /frameworks/base
3) type this.
Code:
patch -p2 < (patchfile_name).patch
for example... (from my previous post)
Code:
[email protected]:~/patch_test/frameworks/base# [B][COLOR="Blue"]patch -p2 < Sense-4.0-Multitasking.patch[/COLOR][/B]
patching file core/res/res/values/dimens.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/res/drawable/nyandroid_anim.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/res/layout/status_bar_no_recent_apps.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/res/layout-land/status_bar_recent_panel.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/res/layout-port/status_bar_recent_item.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/res/layout-port/status_bar_recent_panel.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/res/values/colors.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/res/values/strings.xml
patching file packages/SystemUI/src/com/android/systemui/recent/RecentsPanelView.java
[email protected]:~/patch_test/frameworks/base#
4) download and extract resource files to destination folder.
- in this mod, /frameworks/base/core/res/res/drawable-xhdpi/
5) then compile.. if you have compiled your current rom before, use mmm to compile each files.
In this mod, you have to compile framework-res.apk, framework.jar (include framework2.jar in CM10) and android.policy.jar.
6) after using patch, you'd better revert all changes for future use..
Code:
patch -p2 -R < (patchfile_name).patch

He said in the post above that its impossible to make a flashable zip. I think by that he means its impossible to make a flashable zip that works for all devices since all devices are different. I believe it would be possible to make flashable zips for specific devices, but I have no idea how :/
can u make a flashable.zip for Galaxy Tab 7 Plus P6200?? im running ICS 4.0.3...pls pls...im too noob bout this all..n there currently sooo little dev on this devices..
This guide is written keeping in mind that the development of the i9100g stock roms is very slim and this guide will help in the development of it. I have tested this guide twice and both time it has worked like a charm. Suggestions are always welcome and appreciated.

Keep in mind that the process I have mentioned here works while porting 4.0.4 I9100 roms to 4.0.4 (German firmware-XXLPY only) I9100G
Read this process step by step without missing a single letter or word.
None the less here re the things that I have done that MIGHT be required during this:
1. First of all download this zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?b509zfhuniz92ry
2. This zip contains two folders and 4 files necessary for porting and flashing stuff
3. Download any of 4.0.4 based stock based roms for I9100G[/B] . This rom should be in zip format and serves as the base of all port. Good suggestion would be my rom for I9100g
4. Also download any 4.0.4 stock based roms for I9100
5. Now look into I9100g base roms zip and extract the system folder - This is where ll the work is done
6. Also extract the system folder from I9100 port rom zip
7. Go into I9100gbase rom's system/framework select all files and copy all files and paste into I9100 port rom's system/framework. When notified if you want to replace files then select no.
8. Now delete system/app, system/framework, system/media and system/fonts from I9100g base rom and copy system/app, system/framework, system/media and system/fonts from I9100 port rom to the system folder of I9100g base rom
9. Now go into system/lib of I9100 port rom and copy all the files (not folders- dont copy them) to I9100g base rom system/lib. When prompted if you want to replace files select no to all.
10. Also do same as step 9 for system/lib/bluez-plugin, system/lib/drm, system/lib/egl, system/lib/hw (important), system/libsound fx files. And always when prompted if you want to replace files always select no to all
11. Now go into system/etc of I9100 port rom and copy all the files (not folders- dont copy them) to I9100g base rom system/etc. Again when prompted if you want to replace files select no to all.
12. Now copy all files from system/etc/permissions from I9100 port rom to system/etc/permissions of I9100G base rom. When prompted if you want to replace files select yes to all
13. Now copy the modified system of I9100G base rom to the zip i have provided in step number 1. You cannot use other zip for this
14. You have ported your own rom.
15. Be sure to factory data reset first then flash the zip otherwise this will not work for sure. Do not do factory data after flashing the zip.
Here is a picture of what i have ported. Everything works fine and s intended except for some RILs and other minor stuff.

Happy porting
reserved for picture guide (probably)
Thx for this good guide...:laugh:
try to port new rom from i9100 next time :good::fingers-crossed:
In my option, the files in /system/lib should not be changed as it is hardware specific...for example, /system/lib/egl is GPU related (I9100 uses mali, we don't), /sysyem/lib/hw is audio and gps related (see the omap4 words behind each file?)
Same goes to /system/etc...not all files should be replaced...if you don't believe me, try out your gps, it won't function...
Edit: So my suggestion is, only replace everything in /system/app, then for the other folders, just add in the missing files from original folder to working folder (remember this: working folder -> for I9100G, original folder -> for I9100)...then, copy the META-INF folder (delete the 3 old signature files in META-INF: MANIFEST.MF, CERT.RSA, CERT.SF to avoid possible errors if you want to) from the original folder to your working folder, zip these up (usually you will have two folders in your zip: META-INF and system, but if the original ROM is using Aroma, the directories will be different)...signing is not necessary for cwm flashes...and there you go, an improved summary of your guide...
Anyway, good effort......keep it up!

see the line i have not told to replace but to merge. So u wont be replacing gps files or anything just adding them. U still need those libs files from the i9100 just as a mandatory files not as requirement by the hardware. I know what i am doing
ps the zip i provided conatins the meta-inf folder already ready for i9100g. So you wont need to deal with anything but the system folder. It easier and faster that way. This guide is self explanatory if u read it completely not partially. So read again and enjoy
I did read completely...maybe it's how you organised the words...made me confused...cause it's rows and rows of words...just a friendly advice, you might wanna add more colours or bold / underline the words...then more people will be able to understand it better...maybe this can even be a sticky..

modules are specific to kernel. Every modules should be integrated in the kernel source code. A single module cannot work in the same kernel for different versions. Bluetooth modules should be integrated to source code of i9100g to get Bluetooth working in 4.0.4

How-To change Apps in the S-PEN Shortcuts toolbar
I found, after a long time, a solution for change the Apps in the S-Pen Shortcuts toolbar. The toolbar pops up if you pushed out the S-Pen.
I don´t like and use some Apps like this stupid Game "crayon_physics" or Polaris Office...... first i have delete the Game but how i can get a new App in this Toolbar?!?
Now i have found a solution!!! And i want to teach you how you can do this!!!
First a few Screenshoots before and ofter the modding:
before (without the game):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
after modding:
So .... how can you change the toolbar? I have tested it only on a deodexed ROM!!
What do you need?
any APK Tool Manager for decombile and recombile, like this LINK
a Text Editor like Notepad++ (free)
your SystemUI.apk from your ROM
a cup cake and a coffee :laugh:
First you decombile the SystemUI.apk
Go to the folder systemui\res\values
open the arrays.xml with the Text Editor
Here you find this lines
Code:
com.diotek.mini_penmemo,com.diotek.mini_penmemo.Mini_PenMemo_Service
com.sec.android.app.snotebook,com.infraware.filemanager.FmFileTreeListActivity
com.android.calendar,com.android.calendar.AllInOneActivity
com.acrodea.crayonphysics,com.acrodea.crayonphysics.crayonphysics
air.com.adobe.pstouch.oem1,air.com.adobe.pstouch.oem1.AppEntry
com.infraware.PolarisOfficeStdForTablet,com.infraware.splash.SplashActivity
Now you need the packageName and the className of the App that you want to make in the Toolbar.
An example:
com.acrodea.crayonphysics,com.acrodea.crayonphysics.crayonphysics
packageName = com.acrodea.crayonphysics
className = com.acrodea.crayonphysics.crayonphysics
or
air.com.adobe.pstouch.oem1,air.com.adobe.pstouch.oem1.AppEntry
packageName = air.com.adobe.pstouch.oem1
className =com.adobe.pstouch.oem1.AppEntry
Now you can change the packageName & className with your wanted Apps and recombile the SystemUI.apk
Pushed the SystemUI.apk in a flash able ZIP or changed it in your ROM.
Here are a List of Apps that i have allready tested! If you have an other App please post the packageName and the className and i added it on this List!!!
Or install the ClassFinder App
Code:
[B]Contacts[/B]
packageName=com.android.contacts
className=com.android.contacts.activities.DialtactsActivity
or
[B]Contacts[/B]
packageName=com.android.contacts
className=com.android.contacts.activities.PeopleActivity
[B]ChatOn[/B]
packageName=com.sec.chaton
className=com.sec.chaton.HomeActivity

packageName=com.sec.android.app.camera
className=com.sec.android.app.camera.Camera
[B]Galerie[/B]
packageName=com.sec.android.gallery3d
className=com.sec.android.gallery3d.app.Gallery
[B]Dropbox[/B]
packageName=com.dropbox.android
className=com.dropbox.android.activity.DropboxBrowser
[B]Youtube[/B]
packageName=com.google.android.youtube
className=com.google.android.youtube.app.honeycomb.Shell$HomeActivity
[B]Settings[/B]

packageName=com.android.browser
className=com.android.browser.BrowserActivity

packageName=com.google.android.apps.maps
className=com.google.android.maps.MapsActivity
[B]Calender[/B]
packageName=com.android.calendar
className=com.android.calendar.AllInOneActivity
[B]PSTouch[/B]
packageName=air.com.adobe.pstouch.oem1
className=air.com.adobe.pstouch.oem1.AppEntry
[B]Contacts[/B]
packageName=com.infraware.PolarisOfficeStdForTablet
className=com.infraware.splash.SplashActivity
[B]E-Mail[/B]
packageName=com.android.email
className=com.android.email.activity.Welcome
[B]Samsung Video Player[/B]
packageName=com.sec.android.app.videoplayer

That is the best entry I have seen on this forum, today!
Thank you
I have been looking for something like this.
Now, if we can just get it to be modified, on the fly (as an app and not required to be flashed in recovery), by specifying the apps you want to put in there....THAT will be cool and very, VERY useful.
Thanks for you hard work - appreciated.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work properly for me. I do get it to work, but then the systeui.apk crashes every few seconds. Do you have an indication of what could go wrong, or at least where do you think a mistake is made?
This is the noob-proof multiuser enabler guide for the CM10.1 - GS3 only!!
Want to enable multiuser on your galaxy S3 under CM10.1?? This is the easiest way to do it.
Updates - based on cm-10.1-2013XXXX-NIGHTLY-i9300.zip:
Multi_20130306
Multi_20130303
Multi_20130302
Multi_20130222
This is very simple: just flash the zip file and you're done!! just need to create the users under settings!! Can create up to 8 users!!
P.S. You need to reflash it for every new nightly installed!!!!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!
I just found out a way to reduce FC in secondary user. Create 2 other users... delete the second, reboot and the third user should now be the second but without the FCs... well it should, it worked for me...

Next is the tool I used to create the flashable mod zip. In case you wanna try for yourself or need to remake the mod for futures nightlies just download and follow the steps:
Links:
. JDK and JRE for windows 32bits - (are you under windows x64? Install the 32bits javas anyway)
. FrameworkFlasher Adapted from the wesf90 Original Thread and Updated from iBotPeaches Original Thread to run on CM10.1
1) Install JDK and JRE and Unzip FrameworkFlasher
2) copy your phone's framework-res.apk to the folder "place-framework-res-here"
3) run "RunMe.bat"
4) press 1 to decompile
5) Make the necessary changes under the folder "files-to-edit" ****
6) run 2 to recompile
7) run 3 and 4 to sign and zip the apk
8) Just flash your new zip and be happy!
**** In order to enable multiuser, it's necessery to change some xml file inside framework-res.apk and this is only possible by doing this decompile/compile process...
The files you need to change are:
. framework-res.apk\res\values\integers.xml
look for config_multiuserMaximumUsers and change the number of users (min 2)
Code:
<integer name="config_multiuserMaximumUsers">8</integer>
. framework-res.apk\res\layout-port\keyguard_host_view.xml
need to add this after the second </FrameLayout>
Code:
<FrameLayout androidprv:paddingTop="7.0dip" androidprv:layout_width="fill_parent" androidprv:layout_height="wrap_content">
<include androidprv:layout_gravity="top|center" androidprv:layout_width="fill_parent" androidprv:layout_height="fill_parent" layout="@layout/keyguard_multi_user_selector" />
</FrameLayout>
I made more changes than this so I advice to use mine own keyguard_host_view.xml

Unfortunetly multiuser feature still very limited and buggy... not my fault, it's Android/Cm10.1 fault... you also cant make/receive calls and themes cause fc in a secundary user...

help with decompile
I get the following failure when trying to decomile my apk. I am on the Sprint GS3 and d2spr CM10.1 2013-01-31 nightly. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I am making the leap that the same technique here works for any SG3 framework-res.apk and not just for the i9300. If that is an invalide assumption, then please set me straight. Yes... probably works for your phone too....
The compile/decompile process can cause several erros when one or more conditions are not satisfied, so make sure:
1. Latest Java JDK/JRE 32 bits are installed
2. FrameworkFlasher is updated (the one I posted is updated, so use mine)
3. The folder name where FrameworkFlasher is running should not have spaces
4. framework-res.apk is not corrupted (I use WIFI file explorer to download framework-res.apk to my PC)
5. Wrong changes in framework-res files also ruins the process

Yes... probably works for your phone too....

Thx. It was the version I had. Same version number but from the original forum.
bootlooping when after flashing the zip!
@ varund7726
according to your signature you're running AOKP ROM with a custom kernel Syiah... my mod is made for official CM10.1 ROM only...

This is the noob-proof multiuser enabler guide for the CM10.1 - GS3 only!!
Want to enable multiuser on your galaxy S3 under CM10.1?? This is the easiest way to do it.
Update 1 (based on build cm-10.1-20130204-NIGHTLY-i9300.zip)
1. Multi_user
This is very simple: just flash the zip file and you're done!! just need to create the users under settings!! Can create up to 5 users!!
P.S. You need to reflash these zips for every new nightly installed!!!!
Screenshots:
Next is the tool I used to create these flashable mods zips. In case you wanna try for yourself or need to remake the mods for futures nightlies just download and follow the steps:
Links:
2. JDK and JRE for windows 32bits - (are you under windows x64? Install the 32bits javas anyway)
The files you need to change are:
. framework-res.apk\res\values\integers.xml
look for config_multiuserMaximumUsers and change the number of users (min 2)
. framework-res.apk\res\layout-port\keyguard_host_view.xml
need to add <include layout="@layout/keyguard_multi_user_selector" /> before the second </FrameLayout> ---in my mods there are more changes than this so I advice to copy and paste this file from my mod to this new one---

My S3 (CM10.1 updated, stock kernel) is having FC with everything with a new user. The "Setup Wizard" can't start.

some native apps crash a lot but apps from play should work as I installed several games and facebook at my secondary user... so try removing second user and create it again...

but i can't use anything with the new user: i can't configure it and i can't do anything 'cause the FC window appear for Wizard Setup, Contacts, Apollo, and it never stops. The only thing I can do is tap ok for FCs (no one app starts, neither launcher) and go to lockscreen to switch to original user.
Maybe the latest nightly release is not compatible with the old mod... so I have updated it to match 20130206... remove your secondary user under settings and reflash the new mod... create the new user and then you tell me if it works

tried wiping cache, fixing permissions, reflashing ROM AND MOD, deleting and recreating the user, but nothing works. the same FC problem. even the new 07/02's ROM and MOD.
it can be the gapps? the new user can't open the Wizard Setup (and I think it's part of gapps). I really want the multi user on my S3, so thanks for your work on it.
SOLVED! The problem is with the system theme. With the default theme, it worked!.
We can't apply themes to the system with multi user
Yes... themes cause FCs on secondary users... great to know it worked for you
