[Q] Razr i - Downgrade JB to ICS - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Could someone in the know please provide a simple step by step to downgrade from
[ROM] Moto JB 4.1.2 with a heavy touch of AOSP - Optimized/4.2 Goodies (Jun-09-2013)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174731
back to the Orange UK Stock ROM (ICS)
I decided to flash the above ROM thinking it'd be OK but realised that GPS isn't working at all on it now and really necessary for me. And can't notice any significant improvement for what I need from ICS to JB.
Can I downloaded the stock Orange UK rom and downgrade by following method:
Fastboot > Select Recovery > Install Zip from SD Card > External SD Card and select the Orange rom zip file?
Not sure if I have to use RDLite to downgrade or whether it's safe to to above.
I have unlocked bootloader but not sure what version.
Appreciate any help before I proceed. Thanks

He can do anything he wants. But he'll permanently brick his phone.
I heard that if you haven't updated to Jelly Bean, you can back to ICS. (Like ICS > Pi-Llama/Omar) you can do it fine, but I really discourage to do this. It's too much risk.
I would back to stock JB, but never flash ICS.

Thanks sky0165
Can you please advise where a stock JB is available for download?
Just the ROM (mentioned in OP) has problems with GPS etc. so anything really that will just take it back to stock JB and make it work will do fine for me.
And do I just flash the stock via Recovery method?
Thanks

Yes I made a backup of ICS prior to flashing to JB via CWM Recovery (via backup and restore option)
Do you mean transfer from JB to ICS?

You update to jb officialy? (Whit OTA) or just install the Omars rom directly from ics?
Of its the second, you can go back to ics using your backup, i do it a lot of times and work
Just remember to format system, data and cache before install the backup

From what I can remember I used "RAZR i Root" Fastboot and ADB commands to flash with CWM Recovery
After doing so I made up backup via CWM Backup & Restore option. Then I just loaded Omar's rom .zip directly over/from ICS
Not sure of OTA update - is that the official Motorola update via their update system, if yes then no I haven't done that.
I did read few posts that there was likelihood of bricking the phone going from JB to ICS - but if that only applies if you have performed update to JB via OTA then that's great news and welcome relief for those who have not done so.
As you say I just reload the backup after wiping system/data/cache without any possibility of (soft) bricking? And if my original ICS backup is broken for any reason can I load up any of the stock ICS zip (e.g. Orange UK)?
Please can you, or anyone else who has tried above, reconfirm it is safe to do so once more. Thanks.

Yes bootloader is unlocked (code received via Motorola site, as a result of which you void the warranty etc.)
I will wipe and attempt restore from backup later today and report back
Nervous, but optimistic that it will work as you have already tried same method.

Done,
It's reloaded the original backup/rom successfully and GPS is working again, yay!
Thanks Marco for your help and encouragement

( but if someone gives me a link where there is a Nandroid backup ics after I did the factory reset I can do a restore via CWM? so I will not risk the brick ..)

I doubt an unlocked bootloader is all you need to un-brick the phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2218273
That wasn't all the threads I found. I got bored after about 20 links or so. Unlocked bootloader didn't save them.
I think it is possible but the success-to-brick ratio means I would recommend, like others here have said, not to do it.

Easy Root Official V30B Stock

OK, based on the previous topic on rooting V30A, here is the updated package for those people who want to just root V30B, while keeping the stock bootloader and recovery. It's an image of /system directory (taken from the new V30B) which includes su and superuser.apk.
http://d-h.st/nzI
http://depositfiles.com/files/zdnn68vt4
(filesize: 286,931,373 bytes, MD5: c787ef960b18e222b23327eaa34db0f5)
Just connect your phone in NVflash mode, and run the batch file. Successfully tested by me. Enjoy! I take no credit for the method; I am just providing an updated system.img.
As noted above, this rooting method does NOT install unlocked bootloader or CWM! If you want unlocked BL and CWM, the P990 AIO Tool is the easiest way to do it (it also does many other things -- if you haven't tried it, give it a go, it's wonderful!).

This is for rooting V30B, so you need to flash this ROM first.
Flashed SmartFlash' able ICS V30B (FLS+BIN) from this post thanks to trocopassu
and then NVFlashed this V30B root....
ROOTING WORKED FLAWLSSLY, NO DATA LOST. Amazing Rooting Tool. Works 100%.
Thanks a lot @kt-Froggy True surprises and happy moments on this Merry Christmas.

EDIT: Seems CWM not included. Try Install ROM Manager from GooglePlay and CWM from it.

[Q] CWM, custom roms and warranty

Hello, i've just bought a stock SGS+, with stock rom and recovery. I'd like to install 4.2.2, and my problem is that the phone is still on warranty. Will my warranty be void if I install CWM (I know it will if i install custom roms, but that can be easily reverted to stock), and if it will, can i return to the stock recovery in any way later? Thanks for help and sorry for my bad english

Type *#1234# and write down what you seen in screen. Inorder to claim the warranty you must need that to return to the exact stock Rom which your phone was shipped with. Also take precautions before you start flashing. Take backup of efs and persist. Once you lost these files you can't get them back.
Always be prepared to face an unexpected brick/bootloop/freeze/random reboots etc. Get ready with all the informations to overcome these situations. Happy flashing..
Edit : Flashing stock Rom will overwrite all the previous custom installations. And revert to the stock. Don't worry. There will be stock recovery.

Yea you can install. But don't forget to wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvic cache before installing the zip.
I am using CWM 6.0.3.2 and not facing an issue with it. Haven't used TWRP yet... so can't comment about it. Those who are using says its good.

Hey, once again I have a question. I want to be fully prepared, so i found a tutorial as illustrated as possible, and I would like to ask if it's a good one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776095
Also, is the stockification process the same, but with stock ROM package, or is something different?

It;s a brilliant tutorial. Explained there is a method installing CWM, Rooting and Deodexing of untouched stock ROM users.
You can use the same method as explained in CWM installation using Odin to revert back to stock. Only one difference, instead of that recovery image you have to select the stock ROM image.
Give a Big thanks to Broodplank1337 for such a wonderful tutorial.:good:
Thanks for all the support man ^^
In the tutorial i see CWM v5.5.0.4, and you have 6.0.1.3, and on one thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843825) I've seen that there is 6.0.2.6 already, but they're .zip, not .tar. I should flash 5.5.0.4 with Odin first and then install new CWM .zip through CWM, am I right? And when i'm revering to stock, do i have to download the right firmare, or can i just backup my own? Or if I backup it with CWM will it lose the stock recovery?
And also, I can't find any /efs /persist backup tutorial :C Sorry for all your time taken, but perhaps you have any link? Thanks again
Recovery
Well when i need waranty i just need to restore the rom but what about recovery ? can i leave it on CWM 6

Yes you can install CWM 5.5.0.4. If you are looking for a newer version, you can use Alireza7991's CWM 6.0.3.2(thanks to him). you can find both .tar and .zip files there.
When reverting to stock, you have to download any stock. If it's for warranty purposes, you need to download the one for your region.
In order to flash the stock rom, you have to use odin, not CWM.
Here is how you can backup your /efs and /persist
Good luck.

As i said before, when you flash the stock, all your previous customizations will also lost. After that there will be only stock recovery.
Thanks again for all the answers, still got one question - when is the possibility of losing efs or persist? During rom flash or CWM flash? Can i flash the CWM without the risk of losing esf?

Risks will be there all the time. No one can assure you that any step or method is 100% fool proof. That's why all the developers in here underlying that "Try it your own"., they take no responsibility of any damages.

Hi, Sijav sir,
I used your prerooted C5503 4.3 version on my C5502. Worked well. Really thanks for your hard work.
You are simply great that you made it for 4.4 also.
I have few questions. Pl answer.
1. There is one more prerooted 4.4 available in forum. But install procedure is different. I am confused now. Pl clear my doubt.
2. Is there any problem to install C5503 on C5502. (I am now on C5503 4.4 already. No problem). But fear in mind.
3. Somewhere on Google, I read anyone can enable LTE by change in build.prop. Is it true? LTE is software base or hardware base?. (In India, presently no 4G, but in near future it will be available)
Advance Thanks for your patience for my questions.

1. about the procedures: all procedure is the same it's just my rom is some kind of backup of the current state of my own system folder compressed on tar which saves the permission on every file on itself, which will flash on your phone, as I didn't had any meta-info and somehow I couldn't get one by code and I'm too lazy to build it I did this just to be sure that all permission in your system folder are set to right amount, however using an old meta-info (which currently most dev do) is somehow workable and rom will boot but some problems and malfunctioning may occur later. So I just played it safe.
2. Network vendors (BT and WIFI) are different in C5502 and C5503, I have saw many C5502 broken BT and WiFi, they had also flashed C5503 on C5502!
Flashing another phones rom on yours will result malfunctioning or bricking your phone! So I suggest under any circumstances please Flash a ROM specifically build for your phone just to be safe! (better safe than sorry right? )
3. LTE is hardware base! you can disable it in build.prop, you can enable it too. but if your hardware does not supported then it's nonsense!
OOUPS I flashed the the ROM with PHILZ TOUCH 6 - I did not know that it PHILZ until I saw it on screen at the end....what is the risk and the consequences?
By vanilla recovery...

No consequences,
nothing will flashed or else if flashed without problems then you're good to go. it's either capable of flash it or not!

You mean CWM Recovery, yes?

yes CWM recovery, or even TWRP if you have it.
when you install dual recovery you can even change the philz name to cwm and vice versa. or use NDRUtil to go to cwm.
it's easy

Thank for info.
I rooted and installed dual recovery from desktop.
But now I can not boot into recovery by hardware key or NDRUtil also.
I have installed Xperia Xposed module and then I can boot into recovery (But in Philz. by default)
But is it safe?? I have to install prerooted rom.
In case any problem, how to boot into recovery without hardware key.

Strange, if you have installed adb by pressing up you will go to philz touch or pressing down button you will go to twrp.
you might not installed it correctly!
anyways if you have adb you can pass this command > adb reboot recovery, this will let you to go to recovery but ONLY to philz touch.

It was safe or not, I dont know.
Anyway working perfect as of now. Future dont know.
I dare to do this, because you devs are there for any big problem.
Thanks to you and Thibou for hard work & such a fantastic prerooted rom.

yeah that old philz recovery might works but the newer by NUT have lots and lots of bugs in flashing anything with metadata and some other binary including the CM! which won't flash at all!!
Mate. Can you guide me?
I'm currently on CM11 and I want to flash and see if stock ROM works better for me than CM11, for testing sake and also 'cuz I miss the camera terribly.
Should I follow the instructions in the OP, or is there another long method? I don't want to brick my phone so a li'l guidance could do me.
Thanks en avance.

[Q] Upgrade from 4.3 rooted to 4.4.2 doesn't work on my XZ

Hello,
I have installed a 4.3 stock-rom with root (10.4.1.B.0.101) on my C6603.
Now I want to update to 4.4.2 (10.5.A.0.230), but it doesn't work!
I can not install the original rom from Sony, OTA doesn't work and via companion it tells me I have a other software installed and upgrade is not possible!
Can anyone help me with this? Where can I get the original 4.4.2 rom to install?
Is there a way to upgrade and keep the root?
Best regards

Thanks a lot for the quick feedback, but now I have some more questions:
I have Clockworkmod 6.0.4.6 installed, is there a way to flash it via this recovery?
And is there also a german/austrian rom-version available, or is it the same with the US version?
Actually I wanted to upgrade it according to the description from doomlord here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/development/cwm-based-recovery-6-0-4-6-root-xperia-t2167381 since I'm already familar with the process, but all what is missing there is the stock rom... so would it also work if I use the rom from your description and flash it via the recovery?
And will I always loose my settings and data with the update or is there a way without loosing it?
Thanks again for your support,
best regards

Okay, actually there are two questions from my side:
1. Is ist possible upgrade my existing rooted Android 4.3 to a rooted 4.4.2 without loosing my settings and data on the phone?
2. Can I achieve this by updating the stock rom and then the kernel according to the description of doomlord?
=> If yes, where can I get a german version of the Android 4.4.2 (stock rom) and how can I install it (keep point 1 in mind)?
I hope this makes my question more clear, thanks for your help again!

Okay, so that means I:
1. Flash stock Rom from your link via flashtool
and
2. Flash doomlord-kernel via recovery
and then I should have the the 4.4.2 rooted, did I understand that correct?

Thank you all for your support, I now made it!
Short summary for all who have the same problem like I had:
1. I installed the stock-rom via flashtool according first feedback from androidfreak70 in this thread and unchecked all "wipe" boxes in flashtool for that all data and settings are kept.
(Additional info: if you want to use the stock-rom supplied via sony companion, and you can like me not install it due to previous rooted ROM, follow this thread.)
As androidtweaker1 mentioned, custom recovery and root was lost, but all other data/settings are kept.
Therfore I then
2. Installed Towelroot according to this description and there we go, everything works perfect!
So thank you once again,
best regards

Lenovo´s latest 4.4.2
Thx for the info, I also have A3500-FL, rooted but still on 4.2.2.
Can you compare how 4.4.2 works for you?
I read a couple of posts where people are complaining about it.

It was actually risky to try this root method for my aunt's A3500 HV as I had just bought it for her on 24 Sep 2014.
Originally I bought the tablet with android 4.2.2 and it was get rooted by RootGenius__lenovohome v 1.9.6. When I found this thread, I updated the tablet into FW version A3500hv_a442_01_32_140805 (android 4.4.2) by flashing tool. When it was successful updated to this version, I was noticed via OTA a newer version, FW A3500-HV_A442_01_35_140911 immediately after the first boot. I went ahead with downloading and updating the newer version by OTA. I felt it was so much better with the latest version with rapid lock GPS, better screen display quality and better sound quality as well.
As I was afraid to get brick the tablet in this thread, I tried to root the tablet again with RootGenius__lenovohome v 1.9.6 again but no lucky. As the result I decided to give me a chance to try the root method in this thread for A3500 HV with my own risk as I thought it can be unbrick by re-flashing a FW. Luckily it was rooted successfully with the instruction in this thread. It was a magic. :good::good::good:

Thanks for the reply well I new that they had put some extra security in the new kitkat version so that you can not root but when you use the recovery then you are installing the su file when android OS is is off so the security can't catch you
All right one last question have you tried making a nandroid backup and restoring it up until now if so and successfully please say so
Also if you do not know what a nandroid backup is it is just a backup of an entire operating system and can be used if the system gets bricked and it is totally harmless all it takes is 5 min since you had done the dangerous part and if that works can you check out nandroid restore because if the backup worked in success then there is a 97% chance that clockworkmod restore works o and there won't be any loss of data because you are doing a restore of all the data you backed up seconds ago
If there is a single error message after even after the backup and restore is finished please report it
The backup is totally harmless so if you can just check that I and all the HV version around the world would be very great full thanks in advance.......:fingers-crossed:

Actually I'm pretty sure that KK FW of A3500H does work on A3500HV then I think that the root method will work on A3500HV either. The only different thing between A3500H and A3500HV is call function, I think so.
I did try a Nandroid backup on FW 4.2.2 actually by using the recovery in this thread before upgrading to KK FW. It took about 10 minutes less for the backup procedure to be done without any error and it was written on CMW/BACKUP folder on external SD card (16GB was used). I noticed that the backup steps were similar to any Nandroid backup on CWM recovery: backup boot, recovery, system then data... later generating MD5 checksum. I haven't tried to restore this backup as the update KK FW works really great.
I also tried to flash zip FW (the latest one with build number A3500-HV_A442_01_35_140911) which was found on this link https://yadi.sk/d/KY44k2XDba5Mw from the Russian Lenovo Forum when the tablet was on FW 4.2.2. However, it was not successfull as the recovery said that there was nothing found on the zip to flash. I had no idea about it. Maybe we cannot upgrade to KK by this way when on JB FW or this CWM recovery (which is customized for A3500) can't be used to flash rom. Then I have to upgrade it by flashing tool and FW found on this link: http://lenovo-forums.ru/topic/7809-прошивка-lenovo-a7-a3500hv-a442-01-32-140805-row-call/
Link to the forum: http://lenovo-forums.ru/forum/289-прошивки-lenovo-a7-a3500/
The tablet is not with me now as I just bought it for my aunt so I don't have a chance to try Nandorid backup when it is on KK FW. If there is a chance to do so, I will report it shortly.
I think it would be great if we could have flashable custom rom for Lenovo A3500HV via offical custom recovery.
Good luck!
Cheers,
