When you place the HTC One into the car cradle it automatically launches car mode. If you click on navigation, it takes you to Google navigation.
I have Co-Pilot navigation software installed on my phone. Is there anyway to change car mode, so that when I touch navigation, it launches Co-Pilot.

I have hTC Locations, Google navigation, and Naviking.
The last one is a navigation app in Taiwan
When I get into the setting of car mode, I can change the default navigation app between hTC Locations and Google navigation.
No Naviking for me to choose.
I think maybe it can only change to navigation apps which it supports.
That, or maybe you can contact the support people for Co-Pilot and see if they can add their app to the settings screen to be able to be selected. it could be something easy that we don't know about, or they can tell you that it's not possible.
Ok, I figured it out. Just hadn't spent enough time playing with it.
At the bottom of the apps on the car mode is a + icon. Just click it, and add your app. Then drag it to the top, so it can be easily accessed once in car mode.

Hello,
I live in Belgium and can't use Google Maps for navigation. Is there a possibility to change the shortcut in the Car Home app instead of using Google Maps for Navigation that it starts Sygic Mobile maps or an other turn by turn navigation program?
Greetings
Im also interested in an answer for this, I live in the UK and use CoPilot for satnav as google maps doesnt work
Hope somebody can think of this!
Hello
I used a little workaround. I removed the Car Home app from google and installed "Car Dock" ( androlib.com/android.application.net-cwfk-ig88-carhome-iFqp.aspx )
This program starts when i put my Nexus One in the Car Dock. The application Car Dock comes up and there you can make an shortcut to 6 applications.
I recently bought a Nexus One and have been in love with it from day one - Its been 3 weeks and am still exploring the android and the phone.... I had couple of questions on the maps...
1) Is there a way to cache maps of particular region so that we don't need a data connection while using navigation?
2) Is there any way to make the maps app act like the regular GPS devices - i mean the arrow to always remain straight and the maps to turn instead of the arrow moving and map staying put..... I hope all understand what I mean...

1. Google maps supposedly caches the route you set. True offline navigation support is apparently in the works.
2. Use the Car Home app/Navigation app (Maps 4.2) to start navigation.
Alternatively, you could try true offline navigation apps like Copilot (paid) or AndNav2 (free)...
So here's my conundrum:
I use aa on a rooted phone with aamirror.
I do this because I use overlays to display obd2 gauges and my music widget overlaid on Waze.
However, if android auto is running, and my default nav app is set to Waze, Waze won't run in phone mode. If my default map app is Google maps and I use Waze in phone mode, maps refuses to stop running, and slows the phone down because it's a bloated pile of ****.
So my options are:
A) find a way to make Waze run in phone mode when android auto is running and it's my default map app.
2) find a way to break maps so it appears installed to android auto, but won't actually run because I hate it.
iii) find some other app that will behave as a "map" android app placeholder that either does nothing, or at least has the decency to piss off when I'm not using it.
Any suggestions?
Hi guys!
I'm about to switch from iOS to Android and had a few hochkippst and roadblocks. Besides losing iMessage (I will try airdroid) I was also not able to get my smartphone running as the second screen in Android Auto as it was connected to my cars headunit.
I'm used to this because it's a no brainer with CarPlay. Google Maps and Waze are showing the direction arrows on the smartphone screen while the headunit shows the map.
Don't worry my smartphone is in sight height and I use this only for quick orientations.
When I want to start Google Maps while AA is running I get the message that open GMaps is not possible.
Is there a way to get my directions anyhow?
Thanks for your help!

You can try to use it in the way that on the car system screen you can use Google Maps or Waze but on the smartphone screen you can use some 3rd party app (not supported by AA) for navigation purposes. There are many such tools. Maybe there are some supporting big arrows on the screen as you expected. This 3rd party app will not disturb for AA navigation. I personally use Yanosik on my smartphone while running Google Maps on car system screen.

Thanks. That's an Idea but not the solution I'm looking for. Makes no sense to enter the destination twice.
Discovered that Android or at Lear's the S10 is showing the directions also on the Lockscreen. I didn't find any setting where I can set that the lockscreen will be steady on when it's connected to the car. Do you guys have an idea how to realize that?
Hi,
I just switched from iPhone to Android (S21) to my surprise when I connect my phone to my car and use google maps on android auto, I can not open the google maps app on phone, it is not letting me open it.
While on iPhone google maps can be opened on both screen and while using navigation we get very useful turn directions on phone screen.
Why can't I do this on android ? why Google made better product for apple phone then their own system.
Is there any way to fix this ? even if I want to search an address I have to disconnect the phone from car in order to use the app on phone, this is just ridiculous.
Thanks for your help
i second this. I shouldn't have to find a workaround
I travel every weekend and as a passenger it's nice to be able to look for new spots then send it to android auto
@Netuser i use a workaround and
- use google maps within google chrome (or what ever browser you use).
- For address' i open in chrome.
- lastly, i hit directions and it sends it to the android auto where i can press start or add stop.
I use here maps, maps.me, citymapper, waze as a workaround as well then copy the address into google chrome then press directions.
Pro tip: if you are traveling in europe running waze in the background while running google maps for speed traps is 100% needed. Speed cameras are all over the place in europe not allowing you to go more than 5km over the limit.

This is indeed true, any navigation app currently running on Android Auto cannot be opened on the phone. That's not a Google Maps limitation but it's part of Android Auto intended behaviour.
If you have a rooted phone you can try out "Multi Display" mode in AA AIO TWEAKER. With this mode, Google Maps will also be shown on phone with a map of where you're going and indications. If you have a widescreen car, it will also enable a split view mode which is kinda neat
See examples below.
