First, are you sure it's even network locked? Aren't Talktalk associated with Carphone Warehouse? If so, CPW always supply unbranded unlocked handsets in my experience.
Enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialler then look in Service Info -> Sim lock. If the boxes to the left of the text are empty, then your phone is not network locked.
Edit: It seems Talktalk and CPW parted ways a while back, but I did find this in reference to network locking handsets on their forums - http://talktalkmembers.net/forums/showthread.php?t=100547

Also, if they just bought the phone recently, unlocking it without AT&T's permission is a punishable offence (unlocking a phone without the carrier's consent, that is).

Thats ridiculus, if you buy the phone its yours!
Not if you buy it in contract and get a discount because you bought the phone with it. Then it is part of your agreement, and thus they can make it illegal to unlock without there consent

But not if it's on a tariff, if it's subsidised it belongs to the network until the term is complete, you cannot sell or modify. Same applies in UK, never heard of it being enforced, usually the just blacklist the device if you breach the contract.

I dont believe the phone does belong to the company. And I am sure its not illegal to modify it, otherwise why would Sony allow unlocking at all, they would be party to illegal activities...
Sony provide the service for developers who own outright, this is why bootloader locked on subsidised handset.

Not true, Sony provide the sevice for all people, you do not need to be a "developer"
Also, my handset was free from vodafone and I have unlocked it....
All T's come locked, and you dont have to be special to unlock them, just have one that is allowed to be unlocked by your provider

Actually it does belong to the company until the end of your term.
Sony provides the service, but its targeted at non branded devices, which are not sold/subsidized by service providers. Most service providers even lock the bootloader to prevent you from unlocking it, and thus performing illegal operations without you knowing it.
That said, I don't think service providers who let you unlock it, have big problems with it, it's just that you lose warranty from that moment on.
I don't know if the same applies for the U.K., but it does for the U.S.

I cant remember any of that being said in my contract and I am sure the phone belongs to me.
The break of warrenty comes from Sony, thats why providers also cancel warrenty. Vodafone let you unlock, other providers dont for their own reasons, I dont believe its "illegal" in any sense in the UK.
So good on Vodafone, if only more networks where like that, they are the exception though, all other network supplied ones are locked and unlockable (unless sourced through a third party ie cpw phones4u etc) .
Although they will still lock the handset if you breech, so it's not yours till the contract is complete?
Otherwise anyone could order a handset and tariff and default on it keeping the handset.
"developers" was used as a loose tag, yes anyone can use the service with an eligible handset.

So I pick up my new XZ on saturday.
The first thing I'm going to do is route this bad boy. I have read lots of info regarding the various methods used.
My question is can the bootloader be unlocked on a T-mobile uk XZ??
Enter service menu and Check uself. No need to make another tread about it.

They supplied me with an unbranded, sim free phone. The bootloader is unlockable.

Direct from T Mobile it will be locked, if through third party but with SIM, should be unlockable...

Wrong. I upgraded direct from T-Mobile via their upgrade line. I have an unbranded device as I already stated.
T-Mobile UK branded Zs do not even exist.

I stand corrected then by saying it is as standard, I remarked because a friend of mine got one after seeingmine and his is not unlockable.
Xperia Z
Coming from HTC Desire HD, I was thrilled when I laid my hands on the Sony Xperia Z. But when I played around and wanted to tinker, I was utterly disappointed that my Xperia bootlaoder has a permanently locked bootloader. To my knowledge and spending hours on the net trying to figure out that there are no free or paid ways to get it unlocked I feel really disappointed that this powerful beast cannot be unlocked to run custom roms.
Thinking of selling my Xperia Z but it is such and elegant device. I wonder whether any developers are working on a solution for this or weather theres any prospect of finding a solution.

What on earth are you on about, the Sony XZ is one of the ONLY phones you can get permanently UNLOCKED, you simply go to the Sony site and you sign away your warranty and bam in return you get a bootloader that is permanently unlocked that you "officially" cannot re lock.
I think OP means carrier branded phones that come with an unlockable bootloader. Even Sony can't unlock such devices.

Some phones (usually carrier subsidised handsets) have non unlockable bootloaders.
The OP is asking if anyone is working on a way to bypass that restriction.

It's simple to understand, if your Phone comes from a carrier then there's a 99% chance the bootloader can't be unlocked. I've SIM unlocked mine but the bootloader is a no go.

I don't have a z but I remember my xperia arc had same bootloader problem. To fix it you paid for a program (setool) or something...it was like a test point and you had to plug it into computer while holding tweezers to the SIM slot. Maybe someone can get that to work with the z?

The only problem with XZ is that its sealed to ensure its water resistant and theres no way you can get access to tinker with internals
My question to developer community is...Is it a no go forever or will someone at some point invest their precious time and energy on developing an unlock solution or should i get rid of this permanently locked XZ? Coming from HTC, I have little or less experience with Sony. Has it been an issue before eg Xperia series and some where down the line, developers at XDA found a solution? If so i want to wait. XZ is damn good phone and i really love it!!
There are some workaround for it to unlock at the Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 forum, and there were some discussion in the qna thread about this. Better u check it out.
Looking to get myself a Sony Xperia Z at the shops tomorrow.
I've found one thats locked to the 3 network (UK).
Just wanted to check that it should be simple anouph to unlock it to any network
Thanks
Ben
You will be able to buy an unlock code to network unlock it.
However, as it is a carrier branded handset, the bootloader will be permanently locked, which means you will be unable to flash CM/PAC/AOSP based roms. I don't know if that's important to you or not, but you should be aware of that.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 4
Just a word of caution. I tried to have mine unlocked from 3 and they point blank refused. High street shops won't touch it either. I had to do some dodgy dealings to get mine unlocked.
But yes it will be bootloader locked whatever you do.

Dodgy dealings? There are many unlocking services online (on eBay especially) that will send an unlock code for a fee. Nothing dodgy about that.
