Google Nexus Phones Contain NSA Code - Nexus 4 General

I did a search and no one on here posted about this.
All Nexus owners should be aware of this.

I'm not a developer but I am a lover of individual liberties, freedom and privacy.

In a less worrisome way, the NSA has contributed to the AOSP. Many companies and agencies have. And individuals too. Keep in mind changes have to be reviewed, we can't just stick **** in there and get away with it. Nothing malicious has come out from this (yet).

I was under the impression that they contribute code to make it more secure. So that android devices can be used by NSA, government, employees.
But that's not to say they wouldn't spy on their own kind.

You realize how many knowledgeable people have combed through this stuff? I am pretty sure anything malicious would have been spotlighted by now.
I'm not saying we aren't monitored just that there's less transparent ways for them to do it.

So knowledgeable that they can't find anything. You really think the government will leave a trail that is discoverable to the user's? They are watching you 24/7, whether you like it or not.

And not enough.
Would they watch enough, Boston teract would not happen.

This thread is going to end well...

Is that why the Nexus speaker has that buzz? I suppose that is the NSA software attempting to intercept the audio, which would explain all the wakelocks the nexus has too. Very intriguing details indeed, I'll have the boys at the office investigate later.

You really think that government has some secret sauce that they can apply to open source code that the open source community couldn't read or detect?
Put the tinfoil hats away. This idea isn't even needed in the first place since they already have the capability to gather info.

Wouldn't say that really. The morons in Washington don't code. They hire people that do.
They wrote stuxnet for example. They know what they are doing. It's different for open source though.

Can't wait for selinux.

If I cover my nexus in tinfoil will the NSA still control my phone?

There is NSA code in Linux as well it's called SELinux. Govt agencies routinely add security enhancements to open source OS so it's safer for their own personal use.
Since Android is open source, you need not worry about this NSA code that's present. You need to actually be more careful about iOS and Windows. Even if the companies say they don't,
you have no way of knowing if they are speaking the truth. With Android you have a way to know it as the code is open.
There are lot of talented people looking at the Android code. If someone even tried to sneak a backdoor, it will be found easily and quickly.

Android. The theif.

Doesn't anyone find it odd that we are paying out huge sums of cash for a Linux based OS that is free to use?
Because the cost of the handset doesn't factor into it at all :face palms:
I mean they handed us a broken toy and we fixed it for them with no pay and they sold it back to us as an update, now we are fixing it up more. Hopefully when Android 114.6 rolls out some devs. will for a union of some kind and make some cash from big business instead of settling for the 2.99 that their brothers and sisters are downloading.
Next time put the bong down and think before posting.
Here's your basic argument in another context:
The internet is free so why do we spend so much money on computers to browse web pages?
You fail. Thanks for playing.

Compare prices for free vs paid OS on the same specs. Shouldn't there be a decent difference between the two?

But who is it that decides the devs have been screwed. Is it you? I think that honor goes to each individual who bought the phone. You don't get to determine that someone else has been screwed just because your panties are in a bunch over something related to your phone.
The cost of a non open source operating system on a phone is going to be so heavily subsidized, I'd be surprised if the additional cost was more than a couple of dollars/pounds/whatever. Bottom line is that you're just paying for the device whichever route you take.
Also consider how long android has been out, it is definitely the quickest maturing mobile platform around. Anyone remember the state wm was in at this age?
Edit: I think the developers would rather be "screwed" as you put it in order to bring about progress in a timely manner. That's what open source is all about!

First off, that's a toaster I want.
Second off, you're absolutely right. It's not about the money, it's about taking your phone to the next level and being able to say you were the one who got it there first. I and thousands of others have nothing but respect for these developers and a lot of us give them both props and donations for their work. I'm sure the donations are nice, but I doubt there are many devs on XDA who started writing ROMs and compiling kernels because they thought it would make them rich.
Don't understate the motivational power of random people coming into your thread to say "Your work is awesome, keep it up, and how cool would it be if it did this too?" For some people the respect is all they need, since genuine respect can't be bought, it can only be earned.

Thanks - anytime a source is posted is good. It may not be for the Inc, but there may be things in the code that a dev reads and says "Wow, I didn't think of that".

If I don't know something, I research. If I don't have something to contribute, I keep quiet. I don't pretend to know things when I don't. So jdk quit acting like the 12 year old we all know you are, and start acting like the 23 year old college student you pretend to be. I posted Z code with good intentions and not just to see myself speak. I have seen nothing but improved development when code is released. Look at kernels we all use by posters on xda. They are all updated with latest code from htc, and thus we reap stability and functionality benefits. Willing to bet the devs here utilize something from that code, and do it before official new sense comes to us.

Just read pm i did not see it before. I accept the apology. Let me add a few things. I think we can all agree your not being honest with your real identity and background. Just be real man. No one is gonna look down on you because your a younger. Why live a lie? Im sure im not the only one who thinks you have a lot of potential as far as developing goes. But your not there yet. Get educated, get experience, and just observe for a while. Its ok to sit on the sidelines while learning. You dont need to dev to be accepted. We can clearly see that you have no real developing or coding experience, and in reality dont have a highschool diploma yet. You are young, slow down. This doesnt mean you cant learn as you go, but i reiterate, be real. I no doubt speak for all of us when i say no one wants to hear your bold and inaccurate statements anymore. Your young and just dont have any qualification or justification for most of the things you do and say. Also i will point out that I could never do what you have done with computing at your age, so props to you. With this said, im sure the entire community forgives you for the past but show them that you deserve their forgiveness. No more bold statements, no more "factual opinions", no more relabeling others' roms and calling them your own (,even when credit is given), and lastly there is other ways of contributing to the community without making roms and themes. There would be no drama, bans, or threads like this that generally make this place counterproductive

Darn, there goes that sweet 30kbps "3G" download speed I have been enjoying lately.
My wife switched over to AT&T-mobile the other day and bought an iPhone. The OS runs very smoothly and sort of just 'works' like other Apple products. It's also a lot less clunky than the Evo.
Definitely a good phone for the masses.
I doubt many people accustomed to android would enjoy it though. I hate having to click on the settings icon and then search through all the sections of different settings options just to adjust my brightness.
With MIUI I just pull down my notifications bar and change all of that in an instant.
Also, widgets.
The operating systems are both absolutely fantastic after trying both of them in my opinion. It comes down to personal preference completely.
People don't give the iPhone enough credit... It's made so you know how to use it out of the box, which is what most people who have cell phones want.
We all, at xda, know about rooting and modifying our phones to make them do things they weren't originally intended to do... But you all have to realize... The majority of people with cell phones don't know how to do all of this modifying, and they probably don't care to...
Would I get an iPhone... Probably, if it had/gets a bigger screen. Am I dying to rush out and buy one... No. I like Android.
Agreed, I never thought about getting an eyephone because I don't like Fruitco. , but if I did it would need a much bigger screen, and 4g

Yeah that make sense.
anyway I posted it here so..
In my experience as a software developer I usually start with what would be useful to me that isn't exactly available yet. This way I would be motivated to do it. More like putting a user's hat, think of what you need and then putting your dev hat to create it. It's difficult for others to decide for you.

For my first "real" app, beyond book tutorials, I made a database to store my internship hours and activities. At first it was simple and I had to type in all the fields. Then I expanded it to allow for drop down lists, radio and check box selection and date picker type things. After that I learned how to export my database into both a comma delimited CSV and Excel format. After that I went a step further to allow that information to be uploaded to Dropbox as well as backup the database to Dropbox and the SD card. Lastly, I learned how to let me send the spreadsheets to apps like e-mail and Printershare so I could print straight from the device. Its ugly as hell, but I might clean it up, make it look pretty, and sell it on the Play store if I get time. Currently people in my field have two choices...pen and paper, or a reasonably priced but ultimately pain in the arse online website that charges like $60 a year and we need to track this info for 3-4 years.
So, in other words...as someone else noted...figure out something you need or could use and work on it. If you can do like I did and find something useful for your field, all the better because you could make some money off of it.
One app I would like to see is a decent invoice program that would allow me to store my invoices, backup my database, print invoices to wireless or cloud printers (even using 3rd party stuff like my app does) and have it not cost stupid amounts of money like most of the decent invoicing apps on the market now. I could probably figure it out, but the above app took me over a year of casual programming to figure out...but I work in the medical field...not a developer.

Just ignore things like that. There are a lot of rude people on the internet and they love visiting forums.
Personally I used Eclipse. Most development books focus their tutorials on this and its free!

So if I say "Wow, you must really be dumb, huh?" Which is also sarcastic, that's OK? It's not rude? I'm just checking because you are, obviously, saying that all things sarcastic are not rude...making you some kind of expert, right? Wait, that's not rude either because its sarcastic! I'm going to love this, because now I can put down or talk down to anyone, as long as I do it sarcastically, and not be considered rude, condescending, or an ass! Awesome!
Listen, rude by any other name is still rude and by the OP's response it is easy to see he was offended. I would be as well. Perhaps you are comfortable being told to use Google every time you ask a question, but some people prefer talking about things. Maybe hearing about stuff directly from those who have experience with it, etc. Oh, and please, before you respond, don't even go down the road of how the OP could have asked this or said something that way or another. That's just semantic bullsh¡t and I have no desire to hear it.

Please guys, back to the topic.
ExploreMN, you seems to be an expert with this stuff,
Do I need to be very advanced with Java to develop a simple app?
Or it's ok if I'm a begginer?
Sorry if I'm bothering

Nah, not a bother. I don't think you need to be am expert. Hell, I learned what I did while in graduate school (nothing computer related), while working full time and raising a newborn baby. I started with two books...Android Programming for Dummies and Android Development is 24 Hours. Those two books alone gave me the basics I needed to do everything and I would guess if you really sat down and worked it, you could chew through them in a few weeks. I was doing about a chapter every 1-2 weeks and had to reread a lot because I would forget things between reading and practice. At your age it probably wouldn't be the same experience. At 42 I've already started the natural cognitive decline that makes learning new and not familiar material more difficult on top of being incredibly busy. LOL

Would you break up online

Ok I was wondering if aanyone wwould consider breaking up online, There is a site where you can do this now.
nyce2knowyajust google it.
I think I would! lol
I've cleaned the trolling out of the thread so please keep it clean. If you don't like the question, as I don't, then just don't post.
It's easy
I think it's worth considering, what about someone in a abusive relattionship...what if they can't do it face to face?

In an abusive relationship you would consider how to get away with it.... not how you can break up, I think.... And online is a bit ridicolous I think... Even if its abusive

do you think making it public would benefit someone else from entering a relationship with the abuser

Alternatively, what if your GF ended it with you and out of pure bitterness did it online, accusing you of being abusive when you hadn't? I personally think it's a horrendous idea and only emotionally unstable people would take it seriously.
By the "lol" at the end of your 1st post I assume you don't actually mean it.
emotionally unstable?
as i experienced breaking up is nearly as difficult as coming together, crying, shouting, leeching...
Breaking up online (or sms) is only for cowards and degrading against the partner as you show him how important the relationship was for you.

not all relationships are serious though.
what if it was just a casual thing?

There is no such thing as a casual, non-serious relationship. That's just a friends with benefits or you're lying to yourself. Breaking up online, text, email, snail mail, phone is just being a coward. Even telling someone you don't want to be there friend anymore is just sad & low. The other person is probably going to want to slash your tires as it is, but to breakup with them online, that's how you create bad karma for yourself & make matters even worse.
I'm not sure it will make matters worse since you are breaking up anyways.
as for bad karma, what does that mean...someone will break up with you online too?

It does make it worse, if you care about how people see you - as cowardy little fcker or an honest man. For me at least I was always sorry and a sms or post or anything would have caused that I feel bad.
And Karma means it is not moral. At least I think so...
so no, I would never break up online.

how does morality come into breaking up

I dont wanna discuss about moral and karma
but karma is for me (as christian) like a "currency" for moral.... if you do something immoral (whereas moral is of course related to your type of view) you get karma...
so it is agaiinst my moral to break up via anything non-personal.

It's one of those things you only do if you're incredibly shallow.
I'm a sociopath, and even I think it's pathetic, cowardly and low. So what does that say about them.....
