Got the phone just over a year ago so it's just out of warranty.
The phone recently started turning off, forcing me to remove the battery in order to restart it. This occurred when I turned the screen off (power button) and left it off for more than about 20 seconds. This was obviously a massive pain in the ass, so I decided to s-off, root, then put custom firmware on it.
So I plugged it into the computer and was just downloading all the required bits, and I got a phone call. I picked up, talked for a bit, then when I hung up I instinctively turned the phone screen off. I then left it for about half an hour until the downloads were done (HTC Sync downloading at 40 kbps >.<) and then went to turn it back on. Of course it had offed itself.
So I went to pull the battery out and do the usual -- to no avail. I tried outing the battery, plugging it in, then putting the battery back in (as read from a random Google result) and nothing.
TL;DR:
Here's the status:
Phone began doing the seemingly standard random turn-offs that require a battery loop.
After a week or so of this, the phone stopped coming back on.
And it will not give any sign of life (No vibrates, no lights when plugged in, no PC response)
Phone has never been dropped / watered
Tried different leads / USB - power adapters
Battery was at about 80-90% at the time of offing forever.
Tried with SIM Card in and out
Tried with MicroSD card in and out
Is this **** bricked? I wanted to wait for the Edge to come out before I upgraded; I don't want to end up with a Sensation or something.
Any fixes?

Sounds like your phone just died.
Another explanation is you have something loose, you should open it and check .

I'll take it in the an Optus shop today and start yelling abuse, maybe that will get it fixed. Worked on my old Legend. If that doesn't work, I'll open it up and have a look.
Yelling didn't work, they just tried out the phone on all their chargers and it failed.
So I'll open it now.
OK here's a picture of the USB charger bit. I can't post external links, so I'll attach it.
It looks okay... is this what I should try replacing? The USB thingy?
BTW, I unplugged everything then plugged it all back in, so nothing's loose.
Hey Andrew, I sent you a PM.
Struggling with the same problem...
Just made a call from my phone. After the call the phone seemed to be stuck on the call screen. I didn't think anything of it and left the phone alone. When i tried to use the phone again, there was no screen and the phone was not responding. I tried to re-start the phone by pulling out the battery but it won't switch on. You people seem to have the same problem. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.
Just a suggestion, but have you tried removing the battery and powering on with the charger connected?
I guess this would help resolve whether it's a battery/charger issue.

I have Xperia T on official 7.0.A.3.195 firmware.
It is not rooted and boot loader is locked.
Problem is the phone won't charge when it is switched off and I guess that is not good because none of my previous Sony/Ericsson phones behaved like that.
I have read somewhere that this behavior is specific for some versions of CWM, but obviously that is not the issue with my phone.
Also I have found that problem could be related with chargemod file in phone/system/bin, which should be changed, so if someone can send me that file I can try to solve it that way.
Anyone else with xperia T experiencing this issue?
Any other idea how it can be solved (I have already tried factory reset)?
Thanks.

If you have not tampered with the phone I would be unhappy with it and take it back to the shop for a replacement.
Or you could repair in pccompanion.
Mine wouldn't charge properly when it was on and I just got it tonight and then when it was off charging was on and off like it was getting unplugged and plugged in again I pressed the power button and now I think it's charging but it didn't turn on I hadn't brotherd to press the power button again just yet

Charging on and off loop happened to me as well at first, then I unplugged and plugged the charger again, but nothing was happening.
After I switched the phone on it started to charge. Now it charges normally when phone is on, but still noting when phone is switched off.
I have also tried firmware repair in PCC and it didn't help, so I think I will return it to the shop and ask for replacement.

I had exactly the same problem. I got mine on 3rd Oct, and after about 7 days of use, I discharged the battery to 0% and it automatically turned off. Since then it refused to charge when power off, and as I have 0% battery, it cannot be turned on, making the phone totally unusable!
I finally managed to get it work again, here's the steps if you also find your phone dead.
When 0% battery and auto power off, if you press the power button, the LED light should flash quickly a few times and off.
Now press and hold the power button and when LED is still flashing, plug in the charger (use wall charger not USB on PC). You should remain holding the power button, otherwise the LED will turn off and no charging again.
After about 5 min, it will be charged to a minimum amount required to boot and the screen will be turned on. Now press the volume up key while still holding power button to reset the phone.
I saved my phone just like this, but even now it still cannot charge when power off. Searched this forum and some say it can be fixed by changing the chargemon file? It would be much appreciated if someone can share it.
Thread moved. Please ensure you post in the correct sections in future as all questions belong here in Q&A.

Just to inform you that in the end I have sent my phone to the service center and thay had to open it, remove battery and connect it again.
After that it was possible to charge the phone when switched off. I got it back now and it still works OK. Hopefully it will stay like that.
Shame on you SONY

I bought my XPERIA TX today, I have the same problem.the most issue is when your phone is off then it will not charge at all and LED charging will not work.
You have to switch on the phone and then it starts charging.
This is a big fault of SONY and now I understood why SONY is loosing reputation in mobile market.
I have the latest firmware of 7.0.A.3.220
Like 2 weeks ago my xperia t wouldnt charge too. Fix it then like they said here with a hard reset, volume up and reset. But yesterday i had the problem back. The charger was like on and off cause my notification was busy saying "unplug from socket to save energy". I unplugged the charger from my phone and like 3 seconds later it was BOOM, with a nice flash and my charger died taking out a fuse too. Luckely i just took out the charger, dont wanna know what could have happened if my phone was still on the charger when it short-circuited.
So if you have the same problems.. watch out!

How to open the TL?
I have been looking for a way to open my TL can have you any clue as how to so that? I need to remover the battery like you said to get the phone to start charging again.
Get It Replaced!
If your phone is doing this either call Sony +1-877-7XPERIA (1-877-797-3742) and explain what is going on. You're going to need the info from the pull-out tab found in the SIM/SD bay. It will take a few weeks and some Shipping money. OR your provider will probably replace it for free if you can get it to fail infront of them. (PROTIP: Let it die while using it and do not plug it in for a while)
Your phone will very likely get worse until it fails completely. My experience is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43383759#post43383759
Your phone SHOULD charge like every-other phone. If it is acting funny get it replaced ASAP
I keep coming back to these threads whenever my Experia T is acting up again. I finally bit the bullet and went the hardware way as described in other posts in this thread and also in a comment on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWox7kCygRE
"In the end I fixed this problem by removing the back cover (one screw in where the SIM card goes) and detaching the battery supply from the phone. After a minute or two I reattached the battery supply (its a little yellow tab beside where you plug in the charger) and put the cover back on, plugged into charger and it started charging as normal."
It's surprisingly simple, to be honest.
Did you manage to modify the chargecom file to enable charging while in sleep?
Cheers
My XZ died yesterday - I was not able to switch it on.
Pressing Vol+ and power helped and phone switched on again.
WTF? Anyone experienced similar issue?

Yep. It happens when you switch it off and try to turn it on too quickly. Can be fixed with a cold reset, power + vol up.
mines died this morning what was the cause of this
I had Qualcomm Battery tool installed.
Now I have removed it so will see if the problem will reoccur
It happened to me 2 times already. Both times when I was playing with some apps. It must be a software issue.
Mine SGS2 did that too, on some leaked firmware. Had to take out the battery, then.
I just encountered my 3rd instance of this problem... and it's bugging me!
The phone is "alive", but it does not notify you nor wake up. When you call it, there will be a ringing tone, but your phone will not sound nor wake up.
For my third instance, I had a message come in which I did not attend to. My phone died with the LED still blinking (via lightFlow).
So.. do you guys have lightFlow installed too?
I would return the device so Sony is aware of this issue.
Indeed does not sound normal.
Fooled around quite a bit with my Z and did not run into these problems.
Perhaps sending it back while you still can would not be a bad idea.
Just make sure it is not an app causing this before doing so.
Kind regards, Stefan.
Xperia Z Dead
Bought my Xperia Z a week ago and was thrilled with it until it just died yesterday for no reason. Symptoms: battery has drained withing 6-7 hours after full charging, phone was quite hot although no heavy apps running. After full battery discharge it just simply would not charge or react to any action: power button, power button + volume up key: both do not work however long I press them. Dont know what to do, so frustrating!!. Do not want to switch back to iPhone....
Any ideas except than just returning it back (got it in Moscow, while I was travelling for a short trip, would need to travel all the way there again and not sure if they accept returns or exchanges...) ??

I do not think you should discharge the battery 100%.
Infact, I always wait for it to go to 4% a 5% and then charge it.
Did so with my Xperia Play for almost 2 years and the battery seems to be ok still.
If you still can not turn on your phone:
- Plug in the AC adapter using the wall socket and wait for a while.
(I can remember reading somewhere that some devices refuse to charge via USB using your PC if the battery is 100% depleted.)
Hope this helps.
Kind regards, Stefan.

It has been left there with charger for a couple of days now, used both original sony charger and some other mini-USB i have for a different phone - nothing happens unfortunately
That is a serious bummer!
- Does the RED charging led go on when plugging in charger using wall socket?
- Sounds stupid, but did you try another wall socket and leave it to charge?
- Did you try to remove the USB cable from the wallsocket adapter and plug it back in?
(If the USB bit is not plugged in correctly it will not charge aswell, had this with my phone yesterday.)
Kind regards, Stefan.

No, no lights go on, neither RED or any other colors. Charger is 100% fine - it charges a different phone (Samsung S8300) no problem. So it is defenately a problem with the phone.
Same problem. No charging, Hard reset doesn't work.
My girlfriend XZ white died today "power + vol up" helped. My XZ black didn't have this issue yet.
The Xperia U of my girlfriend had this same issue, and it's related to software. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is return your phone and get another.
Because on this state, the phone doesn't even connect in flashmode or fastboot mode.
It seems to be some Sony problem, so my advice is that you don't leave your phone get 0℅ battery for the first months.
I seriously doubt this is related to the battery level being low.
Mine died 3 times and battery was close to full.
Hell.. the last time it died (this morning) was while it was charging in the dock!!
Sony ought to do something about this!
Here's a related post in Sony's post. Maybe make some noise there as well..?

Mine died 2 times within 2 days I got it. The sleeping error which can be solved by holding all buttons for 3 seconds. I then took it off stamina mode and hadn't had a problem so far 2 days later.

I don't think you have to go to Moscow. Go to the nearest Sony service center, and they'll repair or replace it. if it's unbranded you shouldn't have a problem at all. (Unless you've voided the warranty - box and papers are probably needed.
I did the same with my Arc S which I bought in Poland. (I live in sweden)

How do you know it's a solution? Not seeing the problem for the next 2 days doesn't mean much. I saw the problem after a gap of over 3 days.
And to revive it, just VolUp and Power button is enough.
Stamina? I've never used stamina before.. so you can rule that out.
hi, im new here so please be nice with me and bare with me, right my problem is ive just purchased a second hand sony xperia z the phone was working fully with no faults and I usually put and keep on charge over night to last me all day and this time I woke up in the morning and the phone was switched off with no response only a red led light I have tried all methods to fix this issue such as, volume+ and power buttons no response still then I was goin to try upgrade via flashtool or pc companion but for some unknown reason my laptop wont recognise my phone so im really stuck on what to do next its been nowhere near any water either 100%!! my very last option would be to take it into service repair but that could take upto 2 weeks and need my phone for work, ive also been told it could be hard bricked or have been diagnosed with sudden death but cant get into flash mode at all oh and I have also tried the charge the phone for 24 hours trick but still no response at all when this first happened it even took a good few hours for the red led light to come on when charging but now takes around 5 mins
can someone please help I would be very grateful for you time please take your time to read my post as full as possible
thanks in advance, I NEED HELP FAST, FAST, FAST!!!!!!

Aside from what suggested by juDGEY2k10 above (which should work), did you also check if your charger is working properly?
Try charging it with different usb source (...or another Z's charger if you can find one) with stable and reliable output (~ 1,500mA), let it charged for half an hour then see if you can turn on your phone. Please be reminder that the usb ports of some laptops may fail to charge since their power output may not be stable and sufficient enough.
Sounds very much like what happened with my first Nexus 4. Odds are the battery has decided to completely discharge itself to the point where nothing can revive it. How it happened for you, I've no clue, but the only remedy that can work is simply sending it in for replacement/repair, since you've already tried everything else.
i suggest changing another power source or charger. It does look like its out of juice and not able to to power on.
Maybe use your computer USB with the different cables to single out the problem.
do note that the phone needs about 5% battery to power up. So give it some time, maybe 30 mins to 45 mins and try to power it on again.

Hi guys, I got an Xperia Z of one of my friends to try to boot it up, same boat as OP, black screen, red led, not recognized by pc (no fastboot, no adb shell, no FlashTool).
I tryed to charge also with my Motorola USB cable, no way.
Can we only send back to official assistance?
Try to dissconnect the batery then reconnect it, put it on charge and after a few minutes try to turn it on.
I hope it helps.
One thing to check: does the led come on when plugged in, then disappear when unplugged? If so its probably that the battery isnt charging. If the led stays on (red or other color) for some time after unplugging than it may be something else, the phone is holding power but not booting.
Youve tried hard resetting /shutting down I presume?
This is why I hate phones with sealed batteries, it was almost a dealbreaker in buying this but i gave it a go.
If its the battery and you dont have warranty or insurance (or its too expensive) you can replace it yourself with a little time and research.
I have the same issue, it's because the battery isn't able to hold a charge. This happened to me the day after the recent 4.2 update, I have yet to figure out how to get a warranty replacement as there are no sony stores where I live. However, it turned on briefly when I pressed the volume up and power button together. I saw that the battery was at 1%, I put it on standby to conserve battery but it just won't take a charge.
Same issue here with a family members phone, they want to give it to a friend but can't yet because it isn't working.
They got a new phone and left the Z just sitting on a desk. It eventually discharged but now they can't get it going.
I'm trying to fix it for them.
Red LED, no boot, connect to charger and just get a solid red LED. See how it goes I guess. Can't get it to show up when connecting to PC at this stage. Will try with the official Sony tool though.

HI,any update???
I have the same issue too...
I read.somewhere in other thread that putting in the usb then press the volume and volume up for 8 swcond, wait for an hour then try restarting.would work.
This had happen to me twice already, and the only remedy seems sending it to sony. Where they would charge it. But it took weeks though.

Hello, just about to pull the trigger on a new xperia ZU, but i wanted to see if anyone had any tricks for me to try on my Xperia Z. I was running near the latest CM 10.2 without issues for awhile now. Last night while i was bowling the battery died( nothing new happens all the time to me ). When i returned home i hooked it up to the wall charger for about 30 minutes, came back and still no life. I have tried multiple chargers and multiple cables with no luck. Device has been plugged into power all night and all day so far. When i attempt to power on with it unplugged i get the 3 pulse red led. When i hit the power button with it plugged in all i get is a solid red LED. Nothing more, nothing less. Cant get into recovery or anything. Most of the time a hard brick involves a mis flash or something along those lines....any idea what could have happened to mine?

It might be the battery...
Its not advisable to full discharge the battery but it seems that u did it a few times..
The battery might not take any charge as the red indicator means low battery...
Tried a new battery,i know after removing the rear panel n say good bye to water resistance but is worth a try...
Or u can send it to me for free if u wanted to throw it away...
hope this helps...
Had the same thing happen
I had the same thing happen to me. From what I read trying to troubleshoot it seems like the Xperia phones in general can take 30 minutes + after a full battery drain to even register that a charger is connected. I would try just connecting it to the Sony charger for a few hours and see if that works.
There is also a tip about holding down the power button when plugging in the USB charger and continuing to hold the power button until the phone turns on. Unfortunately, can not find the original post right now. EDIT: Found it. http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-T-TX/Xperia-T-Wont-Charge-Turn-On/td-p/252686/page/4
In my case the red light would not even come on when the charger was connected but would come on if I held the power button down while connecting the charger. After I did this for a couple minutes the phone booted and has charged normally ever since.
So its a mixed bag. Try just charging it for a while on the Sony charger or wall charger (not USB). Or try the power button trick.
Lesson I learned is I will not let the battery completely drain again.
Ahhahha it came back alive! I had tried pretty much every trick that has been suggested and it just wouldn't charge or start to boot. Left it on the main charger again last night and still no luck this morning. Again I decided to plug it into my computer's usb port( I did this multiple times already ) and I hit the power button, a backlight came on!!! and then sure enough there was the free xperia logo! I have no idea why it finally decided to power on, but its showing 1% battery so it was truly not charging any of the times it was left on a charger, computer or mains. Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate it!
I know this thread is pretty old. But I'm having the same trouble. Xperia Z got bricked after battery drain. It wont recognize charging, i kept it on charge two nights in a row now. It did show a red LED while charging for some time and nothing else, but now its back to being stone dead. tried holding down the power button trick, didnt budge. I thought you can only hardbrick it by doing a wrong flash/update. dont know what happened in this case. is there anything else I should try or just take it to a shop and ask to change the battery?

man, try with a new battery, here in my country cost 14 euro . Or go in a service or buy a multimeter and measure the current of ur battery. Normal they from service will give u electrosock to bring it to life. And if will dont work i think u must sell it on piece and buy another
Same problem with my Z3 Compact: one day phone became hot and started to discharge rapidly and when battery became empty, cannot charge and cannot boot, only red LED is ON. I changed the battery and phone booted again. BUT when battery was discharged completely, phone cannot boot again, only red LED is on when trying to charge.
Looks like something wrong with motherboard is happening...
Xperia ZL battery completely drained, not starting up
I know this thread is old one, but I am having issue with my Xperia ZL. Its battery drained to zero and then whenever I plug in my charger, screen starts, Xperia Logo pops up, red light also starts and suddenly everything goes off. This goes on and on infinite number of times. Phone heats up but it doesn't turn on. I had issue with my battery, a couple of months back, so I replaced it with new one. If anybody has any solution about this, please let me know.
