You need a USB Host to go cable - they are pretty cheap off of ebay.
USB hard drives don't always work - at minimum you will need a powered hub.

i know wht USB on the means but how do i enable it. i have tried connecting with a pendrive with the help of the USb on the cable but it does not show .
Once you plug your on the cable in the phone will inform you that usb connecter s connected. Whatever you plug in at the other end of otg cable work run unless it is not supported.

Just plug it in and look in My files. It will show as usbstorage.
I have an official samsung OTG cable, it works fine on the SGS2, but doesn't appear on the Galaxy Note under usbstorage.
Anyone else out there having similar problems?
i had grab some ebay OtG but after unmount and remove the OTG it causes wakelock which drain alot of juice.
I am also facing problems with OTG . when i plug in the cable thr is not msg nor anything happens in phone. please could any one tell me how to enable it may be with kernel or custom rom or may be anything else.
I also want to know this as well,I have spent considerable time yesterday trying to make this work but no luck at all,I would appreciate if someone could help,as I have seen a video in this forum where the guy was able to.connect a mouse to it stating that it is supported out of the box.
I was able to get it to work with a pendrive and a mouse with no problems, but I couldn't get a keyboard or my 2.5" external drive to mount.
Details:
My OTG cable was from DealExtreme for $2.30 or something.
My pendrive was FAT32 formatted.
My mouse was a basic $10 optical one.
My 2.5" external was NTFS, which probably goes some way to explaining why it didn't work even when I gave it some extra power from my desktop PC too.
My keyboard was a standard USB. I also tried a Logitech keyboard with a wireless USB dongle but that didn't work either.
I watched a whole film off my pendrive with no issues. I messed around with the mouse a bit, but the cursor moved too slowly for my taste and the scroll wheel didn't scroll webpages, which is half the reason I'd plug a mouse in anyway.

If you get no message when the cable is plugged in on it's own, chances are it is a problem with the cable. I bought a cable of Ebay which didn't work, so I bought a different one and that did.

Hi, I have just got a usb host cable and I works fine for my pen drive but had a few questions to ask.
Is it possible to connect (via usb) Another android phone and access the micro sd from it to transfer files. The HD2 in question charges itself via usb host but enabling mass storage does nothing on the note.
I have tried my gigabyte wireless mouse and logitech wireless keyboard and neither worked. I have a BT keyboard so only really bothered about the mouse tbh.
I'm on the. Latest rocketrom.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The Note has native support for HID's like keyboards and mice via both Bluetooth and USB. However, when it comes to USB, the more basic the device, basically, the closer to true plug-n-play a device is, the more likely it is to work. Also, with regard to wireless keyboards and mice, depending on the power requirements of the tranceiver, those may or may not work either.
An interesting thing to point out is that USB hub's work fine. So if you have a powered USB hub, you could theoretically plug in a USB keyboard and mouse, and an external HDD (as long as it's in a compatible format!).

Hi
Have red around somewhere: On Android 2.3.5 the USB host function worked, but it was taken away on version 2.3.6. This is for the extended USB host functions. I have an OBD-adapter to connect with my cars computer and it needs this extended function. Likewise, there are Apps that can remote control digital cameras and also see "live view" from the camera.
I have 2.3.6 and USB pens are working and my compact camera work (in PC modus), I can read and copy files. When I try my external hard drive it won't work. Haven't tried with external power to it. (An alternative could be to use an USB-hub with external power to it. Haven't tried this yet.
I have understood that when you get to version 3.1/3.2 the extended USB host functions will work again, and also the ICS version 4.0. I'm excitingly waiting for an upgrade...
I have the original USB-adapter from Samsung
Not all USB pens or hard drives will be supported, as earlier mentioned...
I don't know why anybody would want to do that. Experimentation for experimentation's sake, I guess. What would happen if you connected a computer/laptop via USB OTG to your Note? Would the power from the machine fry the Note? Is there even any application of this type of connection? I think not.
I have this urge to try it out, but I want to know if anybody has been brave enough to do it before
and how would you do this? where is the usb to plug into the ota device?

I thought I'd mention it. I have a USB male-to-male cable lying around. For what, you ask? I use it to connect two usb hubs together, though I can't think of any other use for it . No, it is not a USB link cable(usb male-to-male, but with some electronics in between to sort out the signals, mostly used for connecting two PCs together, AFAIK).
Nothing would happen, note won't detect the device, PC won't detect the note, nothing will get fried. Line voltage on USB is never above 5V (within tolerance) and the note expects that much while being charged as well.
Does the USB port have any other function other than power?
Don't think so, only power AFAIK.
I plugged it into my computer and even tried pressing and pressing/holding the button on the Chromecast but my computer didn't indicate any hardware plugged in.
I wonder if the data pins are even wired to anything internally.
UPDATE: The USB cable that comes with it may not work for data transfer, tried it with my phone and it didn't work. So I tried a normal microUSB cable but still nothing.

It has bluetooth... so in theory that could be a simple alternative... we just need to figure out how to access hidden menus.

I tried this with a self powered USB OTG cable, just to see if the Chromecast would blink, bing, or do anything to show recognition, no dice. Also tried booting with a USB drive in, no difference.

Examining board
Based on examining the photos of the motherboard on ifixit.com...
Component EM1 appears to be a USB Common Mode Choke. That goes on the D+/D- pair which you can see routed from the USB port, so it wouldn't be present if there wasn't some use for data communication over the USB port. (Cost sensitive equipment.) The flip side of the PCBA shows TP1-TP20 (Where TP19 and TP20 appear to be GND). My guess is in that mix you have a JTAG port for programming/testing the unit initially with a pogo pin rig (evidenced by the dimples observed in each of those locations), and there might be more high/low GPIO pins where one might allow the unit to enter its USB data mode.

Looks like its already been rooted. With what looks like a dual usb otg. They don't go deep into what specific cable but, I would guess it is a generic dual usb one off ebay, or amazon, heres a quick one i pulled from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-P...8&qid=1375052489&sr=8-3&keywords=Dual+Usb+otg
But if you read into it, they say you can root, but unless your a developer you probably wont get any benefit of rooting....yet, if at all.

Please correct me if Im wrong, but the cable you linked only charges the thumbdrive/keyboard/mice/etc NOT the Chromecast so how would one root it since it does need power from usb plug? I've been searching for correct cable and cant find it; link to correct cable would be greatly appreciated!!!
This cable wouldnt work, right? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Usb-type-A-..._USB_Cables_Hubs_Adapters&hash=item4857e3608e

I own that cable from Amazon and it should work. It brings in +5v from a charger connected to the female microUSB port and then splits it to the female full size USB port and the the male microUSB port so both the USB host device and the USB peripheral device are getting power.

I also bought that powered OTG cable off Amazon and it will power the Chromecast as well as provide the means to flash the Chromecast via a USB thumbdrive. When you apply power to the Chromecast, it automatically flashed the bin from the USB drive. There was no interaction required (or even possible). Of course this was on the original firmware - if your Chromecast updated itself, you have lost the ability to root the device at this time.
Clearly the Chromecast does sense the USB drive and pulls data from it during the initial boot sequence. However I'm not sure if it would ever work for other devices such as keyboards or storage devices, etc.
I'm not sure why anyone would want to hook those types of devices up to the Chromecast however. Once you have root, you can telnet into the device, so adding a keyboard doesn't seem that important. The whole idea of the device is that you send it media from other devices and control it via that other device. Adding storage for example doesn't seem important since it can pull media off the network already (ie a NAS or another computer).
Anyway. That has been my experience with it so far. It's a long winded answer to more than just your question about the OTG plug.
I would personally love the ability to send audio out without having an hdmi TV be on through the usb somehow...

USB Tethering not working - SGH-i997
Hi all,
i have install Avatar 7.0 to my Samsung SGH-i997 from "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174227". it's look cool.
But when i am trying to USB Tethering, the massage shows as "Unfortunately,Setting has Stopped".
how to Fix this issue.
does the note 8 support usb otg natively? I can't find anything through google, as everything all I can find is for the tablet.
If I need to use an app, can anyone recomend a good app.
No problem for me. Been connecting usb flash drives using the adapter without any problem.
Both the default file manager and solid explorer detected it correctly. Also able to stream music directly from my usb flash drive.

You should get a C type connector, adapter, with the phone (in the Note 8 box,) that you can use with a USB flash drive.
OTG not required for type C USB drives
I have a USB flash drive with type C connector, i can attach it to the Note 8 directly no OTG cable or converter needed, though it gives a rather worrying notification that says that is is now charging the USB attached device (or something similar) but i guess that just means it's supplying power to the device

if you tap on the USB notification,
in Notification it should open a pop-up message
asking if you want to transfer files, charge another device
etc. Select what you want to do.
Otherwise it will charge the other device.
Good luck
post note
Otherwise yiu can set your preference
in Developers Option /USB configuration
eg to charge, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)
PTP, RNDIS, Audio source etc.

I tried that and selecting transfer files but after a little bit of shuffling the charging USB device notification comes back, i am guessing it is required to supply power to the device (no idea just guessing)

i have already set the developer option to default to MTP (i hate having to do that each time i attach it to a pc), still same behavior, im pretty sure that it just means it's supplying juice to the flash drive, seeing as the flash drive has no way of powering itself
edit: Just to clarify, there are two USB notifications, one for "USB file transfer" and one stating that it is charging the attached USB device (not the standard "cable charging" notification you get when attaching a USB cable)

Okay, I tried that with two different drives. Someone else mentions some USB setting in Developer settings. I will look into those.
Okay, I forgot about the adapter that came with the phone. I tried that but the phone doesn't recognize most of my thumb drives. I have one that was formatted fat that worked. Others ONLY seem to work if I format with the phone first. That's crazy and severely limits what I can do with OTG. Am I missing something or is this right. I would love to be able to use ntfs or ext2/3 formatted drives.
My USB is formatted as exFAT, note 8 recognizes and allows read and write to it.

For the note 5 I used the "total commander" app with the NTFS plugin enabled - perhaps useful for your use case.
If anyone is having issues with not being able to change the USB option or not having their phone recognize a card reader, someone else had posted something about this for their Note 5: in MyFiles->settings->File Management make sure Manage files over Wi-Fi only is off and you may wish to also show hidden files
I was having fits with intermittent card reader functionality because of these settings. It still shows as charging the USB device, but it now shows the USB memory card in the list of file locations.
My Verizon Note 8 has a 256GB Samsung MicroSD card installed. Not sure if that makes any difference, however using the default file manager it does not show anything changing when I insert any USB OTG. However, I installed ES File Explorer - and it does find the storage but does not actually mount it, although it is readable. I prefer this type of access to the storage, since there is nothing to unmount. Removing storage that has been mounted causes that storage to become corrupted and useless if it is removed without unmounting. I did not know this type of storage connection was possible - I thought everything had to be mounted... Note the circled item in the screen shot - so this is what I have been using...

I can add that I bought a USB C to USB 2.0 type A OTG adapter and it did not work with anything, and sometimes would say that moisture had been detected whenever I plugged it in.
So... I bought a different adapter that is USB C to 3.1 type A and this one works fine with everything I've tested (usb flash drives both 2.0 and 3.x, usb mouse, usb ethernet adapter).
I'll pick up the pendrive and plug it into the usb c adapter on the phone and nothing happens.
The phone does not do anything to plug in.
It does not say anything, does not write anything on the display.
It's silent.
It's like my usb c adapter is not good either.
In the developer settings, I looked at what the usb was about.
Someone's got any ideas.
Thanks

You my friend are an absolutely wonderful human being. I have tried countless times and never figured it on my note 8. Factory resettled multiple times as well. I have a tab s3 and it always pops up but the note 8 not. Changing the option to off seemed to do the trick. Thanks
Seeing as the Note 8 comes with a OTG adapter. I think it is safe to say that the Note 8 does support USB OTG.

Yes but I believe they really meant for people to use that for smartswitch with the cable. I used it and only had to make a minor tweak with a couple of widgets.
