[Q] Roms evaluation - Speed, buttery feel, battery usage, temperature - LG Optimus 4X HD

I'm now in V20a stock, and i must say that, for me, this is a wonderfull rom. All around very fast and buttery (menus, launcher, app drawer, gaming, etc). But im getting battery drain. For exemple from 11.30 pm to 8.00 am drains 14/15% of the battery with 3G, wi-fi, NFC,etc all off.
Tried the iodak kernel with stock v20a but the O4x heated to much playing games (very, very hot).
I tryed CarbonRom-Hello Halo! and it had good battery usage (2/3% overnight in same conditions), but it wasnt quite as fast and not as buttery as stock, no matter what launcher i used (tryed rom stock, apex, nova, Holo).
So i would like to know your opinion on roms you are using, in terms of:
- Battery usage
- Speed and buttery feel
- Temperature when playing

This sort of question isn't allowed. Iodak and werewolf kernels have many tunables that can help with battery. Get yourself a copy of tegra overclock, you can lock to less cores or the low power core, you can also use trickster mod kernel settings to reduce voltages. Unfortunately our battery life is just bad in use. Werewolf kernel has a baseband wake lock removed which should solve some of the drain whilst phone is idle. Have a look round and read up on the different offerings available, and gather your own opinion. Personally I think stock with iodak or werewolf kernel is a winner

Thats what i would like to get. Maybe sometime i try to do a clean v20a instalation. My present instalation was an upgrade from v10 using Kdz file. I thought this would do a clean install, what aparently did not happen. Something must be messing whith the battery usage.

I'm using the cyanogenmod 10.1 (android 4.2.2)
-battery
It's not very good but not too bad either. It lasts me a day of moderate usage but it has to be charged at the end of the day.
-performance
Very smooth. The only fault in that regard I find is that the 4.2 camera does not play well so I got the apk for the V20a camera. It works a lot better.
-temperature
It's still hot, the only way you can change in this regard, as far as I know of, is to reduce the clock speeds of the gpu. It's not so hot that it overheats but it's the same uncomfortable heat when playing very resource intensive games/apps.

Actually best way to control the temperature is with the throttle limits. Personally the heat doesn't bother me, but if its a problem for you edit /d/tegra_thermal/temp_throttle to values of your liking

After a nandroid restore, somehow the stock v20a started behaving amazingly well in battery usage. I'm gonna keep an eye on it, to see if it remains battery usage efficient
Apart that, still is a butter fast, customizable, great looking rom.

For me the full werewolf package is amazing. Good battery life, awesome performance and I can cook with it it gets quite hot but that's intended from the kernel (temp throttle is quite high).
Only one thing bothers me and that's when the phone's plugged and I do heavy work with it, it gets to hot to work smooth sometimes.

How fast Is your phone?

Is there any actual blazing fast roms where everything your do is instant because I haven't found one yet. Most rom descriptions say they are blazing fast and have absolutely no lag and that there isn't anything better.
However my phone is not at all blazing fast. Most apps don't open instantly and start to get kicked out of memory making it impossible to multitask.
I want to know rom and kernel you people are using and what you think of the performance
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I have an HTC Touch Pro 2. Two main issues:
1) At first, yes, it was maddeningly slow about half the time. It often, and I mean alot, would stop, think a loooong time like 10 to 30 seconds, trying to decide what it wants to do, then all would be OK for awhile, then stop and think. Arrgghh.
I am currently working on speeding up my Droid install, probably always will. Start here: read this thread on speed improvement. Try each one, one at a time, and do some simple benchmarking and you will find that one or two of these will help. My droid is not maddeningly slow as often. It is even quite peppy sometimes.
2) Battery life WAS bad, I was carrying 3 batteries in my pocket with the TP2 and I would run through all of them by 7pm that day :-(
How I fixed my battery life issue.
Battery life went from 4 hours to 1.5 days with this tweak. Installed DAZZLE from the market. It is a widget, after downloading you can create as many of these DAZZLE widgets as you want on your home screen. I created 2 DAZZLE widgets. A 5x1 (that means it has 5 configurable buttons), for the buttons I selected: Mobile Network, Wireless Network, Bluetooth, GPS, and Sync. Next: turn off all 5 buttons. Turn them on only when needed. My battery lasted 1.5 days! I am finding that when at home I can leave Wireless and Synch on and it doesn't drain the battery. With all 5 of these off I can still text and make calls. Also, install a DAZZLE 1x1 widget and customize that button to control screen brightness, I set it usually to 56%. Screen set to MIN at night when reading my RSS feeds in bed (I fall asleep reading the news) OK, one more battery life tweak: I installed SetCPU. The paid version is free for all XDA members. It is pretty self explanatory how this one works. You can find the free download on this forum by searching. I set mine at first from MAX to MIN but I felt the MIN of 122,880 was too low and it was lagging when it would wake up from a dark screen, so I moved the MIN up a notch to 245,760. Now it wakes up faster from a dark screen. All 3 of these tweaks make me a happy camper now for battery life, now to get the darn thing to be lite and quick and responsive. For me that would be no more than 2 seconds from button push to when an app opens.
Try galnetmiui or cm7.
They're both really fast (scrolling on cm7 is really laggy however).
Try supercharger v6 (just google it), it conpletely fixes the ram management.
Youll never have lags caused by to low ram, but you can still multitask.
You can also try a fast launcher like launcher pro.
That will make your whole launcher experience much smoother

Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I would recommend installing a stock Samsung ROM, that is odexed (JVR or JVS). And then MAYBE apply the supercharger script, but it's really not needed. That is about as fast as this phone can get. Don't worry about benchmark scores, or the so-called "lagfixes". They fix nothing anymore.
This is only based on my own experience.

I agree with you. Most custom ROMS boast all sorts of modifications and tweaks and high quadrant scores, but in terms of smoothness in user interface, I see no real difference. I find that stock ROMS are the best. I also find that froyo 2.2.1 roms are better than 2.3.4 because of more free ram. So, less memory swapping occurs and apps can start faster, browsers remain minimized rather than saved-state, etc. on froyo. However, I use JVR now mainly because I find that while it lags a little, the loading of things, like installing apps, loading videos, loading app lists, is faster. But it definitely lags more than my old ZSJPK rom

You can find it here. It's included in some ROMs already, e.g. Simplicity.

Try Simplicity ROM. They utilize very good and stable Semaphore kernel. Quadrant score without any over-clocking is 3000 but it doesn't matter. Lag free experience does matter though.
my friends galaxy ace is faster than my i9000 !!
I usually opt to maximise battery life, but have played around with a lot of custom roms. My votes for smoothest roms in my experience thus far would be:
Odexed JVR with GalaxianGT Kernel (1.2GHz) - I was surprised by the smoothness coming from Speedmod. I'm guessing it's primarily gained by OC'ing to 1.2GHz and using an ondemand governor rather than Speedmod's conservative one.
CM7 with Platypus kernel - CM7 is really smooth with the stock kernel as is running with an ondemand governor, but it felt a bit quicker with Platypus kernels tweaks. I'm betting the use of YAFFS2 instead of RFS is the biggest reason it's quicker than stock Samsung roms.
Smoothest launcher I've used is ADW Launcher EX. I've compared it to GO Launcher EX and Zeam and it looks and feels quicker to me. Launcher Pro is also quick, but it hasn't been updated in ages
I use SURFACE JVR with Speedmod as I've found the kernel to be one of the best with regards to battery life and the ROM removes all the bloat and Samsung apps that I don't use.
am on jvs deodexed and my phone is always lagging
I am on SH 5.1 Revenge ROM and GalaxianEE JVS, both working nice... before this I was in SH modded kernel T5s, also stable and fast, I choose GalaxianEE as the charging speed is faster compare with another...

You need root permissions in order to use Battery Calibration, if i remember right.
In my personal experience i wiped only once battery stats, ad i did it via CWM. Remember to fully charge battery before doing that!

I'm satisfied with this.
JuiceDefender plus or ultimate are good (ultimate doesn't do too much more than plus other than lots of fine tweaking for those who enjoy it), and if you're rooted CPU tuner is excellent to customise frequency and governor management over the range of battery. I actually prefer the UI of CPU tuner to SetCPU, and it is free.
https://market.android.com/details?id=ch.amana.android.cputuner
IMPORTANT: wiping battery stats doesn't do anything for your battery life!!!
Hmm battery calibration not extend the battery life it only display accurate reading of your battery, your battery consumption depends upon the appication you are using and stock, although is a good result of battery although stock app is good and heavy loaded but still it have good battery beacuse of its coding in framework.odex files and it also depends on your baseband like i am using under config files
Rom- The myth ICS beta2
Rom build- Custom Stock ROM
Baseband- Previous was DDKQ6 now XWKS2
App use to save battery- Power MAx pro
My usage Type Heaviest icludes -approx 4 hour wifi,Youtube movie approx 3 hours, always on 3g connection, games 30 min or less, Music played 4 to 5 hours Calls 10-15 min, Messaging 2 hours and my battery last upto 18 to 20 hour without compromise Thus by good baseband with Custom stock rom and app u save your battery i wll upload my screenshot too
So its a good deal for me

JB rom with best battery life ???

hello xda
i was on GB 2.3.4 rom (surface JVR) and battery lasted two days minimum (with normal use)
for some unknown reason i couldnt get past "scanning sdcard" so i installed Helly Bean, nice new features i admit i did not see any bug, but battery loses 1% each half hour (when phone is sleeping). using it i lose like 30-35% each hour. everything works including BLN but battery drain is too damn high
on my previous GB rom battery use was maybe 5% each day (when phone was sleeping).it had unbeatable battery life even oc'ed to 1200.
what JB rom do you guys suggest has the best battery life? maybe change kernel? change governor? another radio? from your personal use; what would you say? thanks
Hello there,
I have Paranoid Android on my i9000 and the battery life is just cool, just try it
(If you see battery draining, just turn off 3G when the phone is sleeping, so it would be Awesome)
I hope it helps

I have been trying a number of ROM over the last three weeks and so far the one that really stands out in performance and notably in Battery life is [AOSP][ROM][4.2] JellyBean 4.2 PREVIEW (20121125) by pawitp that I have been using for the last three days.
As always I have both Juice Defender (free) and Go Power Manager installed. Juice defender set to aggressive and Go Power Manager set to Super Saver. The phone (i9000) is used for calls and sms for the most part as it is a business phone.
I have only used 34% of battery since Wednesday morning till now (Friday afternoon) - something that even with Gingerbread was not possible.
Am about to upgrade to the 30112012 version this weekend. http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/good.gif

[Q] [HELP] Battery Draining HELL FAST

This is my first post . I have been searching about battery drain issues from about 2 months. Yes ! two months ! now I found it better to ask it myself. I have a GT-I9000 with 1650mA Samsung's battery, the problem is that , one point drains in around 3 - 4 minutes maximum. I am using CM10.1 , i have tried about a thousand roms , several kernels just checking for the battery life . On stock gingerbread rom i usually get 5 minutes for a single point with wifi and cellular data OFF . Now I am really exhausted trying different roms and kernel ( flashing 10 times a day and sticking to my phone checking battery , is really now pissing me off ). All I want to know is that ? Is this okay ? 3 minutes for a single point on jellybean roms and 5 minutes on gingerbread ones ? tried every kernel no oc no overclock , nothing. Is it about more cpu usage on jellybean roms ? what should i do now i really am pissed off totally. how many minutes does it take for your phone for a 1% to drop ?
If you use your phone, then it's normal that 1% drop per 3-5 minutes but if it's in sleep, well then its draining fast so i think your battery is broken.

No,when its in sleep mode 1% takes 3hrs approximately. But can you explain that why i am experiencing a large differnce on CM10.1 or SuperNexus 2.0? I tried almost every kernel .

Its normal to experience less battery on JB roms because JB as a whole is a more demanding version of Android. Project Butter- 60fps hardware acceleration- while making the phone buttery smooth, is definitely going to take a toll on both the processor and in turn the battery. There are SO many things in Jelly Bean that will definitely have a significant impact on your battery life, compared to stock Gingerbread.
I've had cases where I've drained almost all my battery just setting up my phone.
As compacity said, choose a rom and a kernel that you think you like, give it a few days (charge/discharge cycles more rather) and then post a screenshot of your battery stats. Once you install a rom in needs time to calibrate, which is done through the charge/discharge cycles. You might fnd that you actually have pretty good usage
Oh, and when you do take your screenshot, just for clarity please state whether you've underclocked, changed governor etc.

Battery life without touching phone - One Day

Hi guys,
I have Stock Android 4.1.2 with Iodak V06 kernel. Lately my battery life is astonishing! One Day without touching (if, barely) a phone, so I'm amazed by Nokia Lumia 720 battery life in heavy usage (3 days minimum). I tried to look at integrated battery life usage section, but nothing major. I tried to reboot phone many times, even under-clocked phone to 1.3GHz with Conservative mode in SetCPU. Maybe you can recommend any useful, good app to track my battery life? I'm pretty smart Android user, but I just don't know why my phone last so little. My last hope - install clean V20A and do LG Backup. Maybe fresh ROM with stock kernel will help.
Install betterbatterystats and look if there are wackelocks i think it is that

Truth about this phone it won't get any better regarding battery life. Stock ROM gives best battery life in my experience. But its performance is not as good as using cm10.1.2 stable release. Iodak kernel gives quite a few options to tweak. But I don't do it cause I can't precisely understand what the tweaks are, I use the kernel with no personal mods except for OC 1.7 mhz which I'm very satisfied by its performance.
The screen on this phone is to damn sharp and bright, the main reason of battery drainage falls into the screen's technology LCD. If this screen was superamoled, battery life would probably be a whole different story. Hope you get my point.
