Found this out when trying to install the 23 toggle mod. When I installed it, nothing changed. Then I did some searching and found I had a SystemUI.apk in my Framework folder. When I renamed it to keep it there but not functioning, I had no wallpaper and couldn't apply one, but it didn't FC. So I copied the SystemUI from the apps folder to framework folder and did a hot reboot and everything returned including the 23 toggles. Weird again in my phone. Anyone else have this?

Can someone help me figure out why the Launcher.apk does not get installed to the phone when applying the zip? Everything else seems to get installed fine.

FYI - It installs fine on my G1, but getting reports from some users that the Launcher.apk is not changing for them.
Its probably the user
I'ma dl and flash. and edit this post with my findings
EDIT: no idea why but it did not install on mine either
only thing i see in the logcat regarding launcher (which is probably a bad thing)
11-10 13:44:58.401: WARN/WindowManager(142): Force clearing freeze: AppWindowToken{439374a0 token=HistoryRecord{438d2338 com.android.launcher/.Launcher}}
Will investigate more and see what I can do. I took a quick look at the scripts but they seem fine.
Ok so something is messing with the launcher because the stock launcher doesnt have cyans settings (they only have 4 icons across)
pushing the launcher.apk works fine
Also, its not just launcher.apk
I dont have the themed power bar or google search bar. powerbar is in settings.apk
EDIT: None of the system apk's installed
everything is stock with the exception of framework-res.apk
there is something wrong with the install script
EDIT2: changing install script to copy_dir PACKAGE:app SYSTEM:app
EDIT3: worked on replacing launcher and dialer...but the search and power widget are still unthemed. they dont appear to be themed in the apks however
so just go to META-INF>com>google>android and open update-script in notepad++
and change the last line to
copy_dir PACKAGE:app SYSTEM:app
wow...thanks for the good info...what I plan on trying next is just taking someone else theme and using theirs as a template(since there is no generic template). The only issue I'm seeing is that the directory structures are different in a lot of different themes. So I don't really know which one to use.
Well its very easy to edit that script so I can help you out with it if you like.
basically
copy_dir PACKAGE:app SYSTEM:app
tells the recovery to open the package (the update.zip) and copy everything in the app folder in the .zip to the SYSTEM partition, app folder
You can just mess around with that and get it to work with whatever structure the base template has. If you need anymore help, just pm me
Ok so I'm pretty new to this, and have a small problem.
I have recompiled a framework-res.apk so I could have custom brightness levels and a notification pull down widget. It works just fine buw I have 1 small problem: some menu items went completely blank (see attached pictures). When I press the button I can actually read what it's supposed to say. This has only happened in setcpu so far, and I don't really now what's causing it.
I ran a diff with a framework where it doesn't happen and can't spot anything that could tell me where the error is...
Haven't found any other app that shows this error so far as well. So anyone encountered this yet or knows what png/xml could cause it?
Anyone? It's not serious but it annoys me
Hmm, it worked for me doing the same thing - and my SetCPU menus look okay.
How did you modify framework-res.apk? I used APK Manager 4.9, I decompiled framework-res.apk, edited arrays.xml, and recompiled. I said "yes" to system apk, "no" to copying files from original.
Also I had to replace the apktools 1.3.2 that came with APK Manager with the 1.3.1 version. (Go to http://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/downloads/list and search "deprecated downloads" for 1.3.1 and the 2.2_r01-2 dependencies.)
Could be either one of those things...?
In any case you are sure you did not coincidentally messed with text colors in styles.xml or color folder?
I used the latest apk manager, without modifying it, might've been that. Nö changes to styles or color folder. Will try recompiling with apktools 1.31
sorry for bumping an old thread but -
I was playing around with auto-brightness values today.
I decompiled the ARHD 3.6 framework-res.apk using the latest apktools 1.3.2 and changed the autobrightness values, using notepad ++.
I rebuilt the apk then zipaligned it (zipalign -v -f 4 ). However, after flashing the new apk, my setcpu menu was out of whack and I couldn't see any scaling, all I could see were white boxes. Same as the OP.

Yea this worked thanks.
i´m trying to change the settings.apk icon.....
so
1) i rename the apk to .zip
2) open the archive
3) replace the original with another .png
4) save the new archive
now comes the strange part,
after saving my archive, i only got half the size of the original archive but it contains exactly the same files (4,4 mb <--> 2 mb)
i did the same way when i changed all folder icons in the arc launcher and it worked without any trouble
--------------
and is there a way to have two icons for the same app?
for example:
settings in app drawer ---> white icon
settings in widget menu ---> black icon
or does android automatically use the same icons for both?
still didn´t solve this problem ;(
tried via root manager and using 7zip under windows....filesize stayed the same but didn´t work.
and when i changed the icon, i couldn´t open the widget menu or go to options --> settings
oh boy....
try this :
1.) do all your customizing with this apk ...
2.) copy AndroidManifest.xml & META-INF (folder) from original settings.apk to your new settings.apk
3.) put in update.zip to flash in CWM, or push to system/app manually, check if permissions are ok (rw-r-r)
this worked for me theming framework-res.apk from FR18b2 ...
without copying AndroidManifest.xml & META-INF (folder) from old to new file, i always had bootloop ...
if it´s still not working, you can try and
1.) decompile with apkmanager or apktool
2.) do your customizing
3.) compile apk
4.) copy AndroidManifest.xml & META-INF (folder) from original settings.apk to your new settings.apk
5.) flash
tried your first hint but it didn´t work......
so, when i try to open the widgets i get this message:
sony ericsson home (process com.sonyericsson.home) gets force closed
maybe it has something to do with that?
i deleted lglauncher.apk and launcher2.apk and replaced it with a modified arc launcher as main launcher
---------------
im thankful for your advises but i have ZERO knowledge and experience in stuff like adb, apktool, scripts and stuff...
i can handle illustrator or photoshop
if it´s not working, i think i have to let my idea go.....
I am trying to edit the icon for the phone.apk to match a theme i'm working with. When I go in and change the icon file in the .apk and try to overwrite it on my phone it either causes a constant FC or the phone app disappears and I cant use it at all. I have tried using a file explorer to do the swap and I have tried editing the phone.apk and putting it into the theme before I flash it. If I put it into the theme before flashing there are no FC's but the icon stays stock. Can someone point me in the right direction?
P.S. I have done this with many other apps such as email.apk and mms.apk and they work fine.
DialerTabActivity.apk not Phone.apk

Just tried that and it didn't change anything. Performed a reboot after switching the files.
/res/drawable-hdpi/ic_launcher_phone.png doesn't work?
Just an idea, this might be caused by the ROM or the launcher you're using.
Yep, that's the one I changed. I tried your suggestion and changed launchers also and it did not effect the icon.
I'm downloading Obssession right now. I'll look in the apk and see if there is anything special necessary.
Well, that file is definitely the icon. If you decompile the apk and look at the AndroidManifest.xml you can see that ic_launcher_phone is the app's icon.
I swapped out the icon for an orange stock-like icon on the attached apk. I can't test it as I'm on CM, but you can see if it'll work for you. (This is the stock Obssession blues rc2 dialertabactivity.apk w/ just the modified icon)
How can I open the .xml files? When I try to open them IE gives me an error and when I allow the script to run it doesn't change anything.
You need to decompile the apk in order to view the xml files. Using APK Manager is the easiest way I know of to decompile apks.
Can I see a screenshot of what you are talking about, icon wise? If it's the launcher then the problem is the icon in the launcher, not the app.
Oh and protip, use Notepad++, not IE: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/
I have modified SystemUI and SecSettings (add flashlight toggle, make SystemUI dark). Can I simply copy+paste to /system/priv-app/ while the device is running (and deleted/rename odex files) and reboot? I figured that worse case, they would FC until I replaced them again, assuming I messed anything up. I do not have SafeStrap, FYI.
Thoughts?
How did you add flashlight toggle? I am in Stock att 5.0

I use a deodexed rom, but I did it that way. Copy and paste it in and change permissions. When I put in systemui, it crashes, but starts up again. Then I change permissions. In the past, I've modified flashable zips to put the files in.
