Have my pi set up running XBMC. my root filesystem is on a 160 G USB hard drive. I am using one of the recommended wifi dongles. Under heavy data transfer, wifi would go offline. Bought one of the tested/approved belkin powered hubs. No more dropped wifi under heavy transfers. Newest issue is if I let it sit idle for more than 3 or 4 hours, the wifi drops and won't come back without a hard reset of the pi. I made changes to the cmdline.txt that fixed it from dropping while idle when the wifi dongle was direct connected. No difference with it on the hub. Pi power supply is a 5v 5a supply, so there is plenty of juice available. Any ideas???

Can you get a log using dmesg once the Wifi dongle drops? That may give some insight.
Use:
dmesg | grep -i usb

Absolutely no errors in dmesg, and used grep -i usb * | more and no errors in any of the logs

Is the hard drive on the hub also?

I can put the hd on the hub and have no issues with it disconnecting. Currently the hd is on the hub and the wifi dongle is on the pi. Loses wifi under heavy network data transfer.

Hmm..when you lose wifi, is it showing that the adapter has been removed from usb(ie physically disconnected)?

Absolutely nothing in the logs. No errors, nothing showing the wifi dongle disconnecting or being removed (unless I physically remove it).

Post the output of ifconfig and iwconfig when you have a chance.
Edit: just wanted to clarify that you post the output of those commands after Wifi has died

Try a bigger mA power supply for the raspi since you have attached an external hdd which requires more power, thats when and why your wifi dies...

Yup, those kinds of issues are ALMOST always due to not enough power.

I had the same problem on my 1st gen Pi. Using another powered hub solved the issue for me.
For some reason I don't have any problems on my 3rd gen Pi while using the same troublesome hub...

It worked for me :good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014441&page=3&highlight=mhl
The ones I got from them worked. Just make sure you get the 11pin to 5pin adapter. You'll need a good USB cable that doesn't have high resistance. Otherwise, there will be enough power use the MHL, but will drain the battery about 20% per hour if streaming media, such as Netflix. If using the cable that comes with the phone, it's about 1% per hour.
Anyone had any luck with these cables? Specifically using an external DAC while still powering the phone. It's possible on my Nexus 7 with a custom kernel.

+1 Very interested in this as well.

I am using one of these cables, but in a different manner, ie I am accessing a WD Passport 1TB external drive. (does not have ac in) Both my drive is powered AND my phone is charged. (tried using both a 10kmAh external battery pack as well is direct AC adapter.
Know it's not exactly the setup you are using, but as far as cables go, the phone seems to work well with this setup. YMMV

If I may ask, where did you get the cable? The only one I found so far is on Amazon and review there say that it will not charge the phone, just the external device.

Got the same cable and its not working, do we need a special kernel to make it work?
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
On my Nexus, I did have to flash the right kernel. I'm guessing that will have to happen here too.
Why not make a cable that will charge and otg

Just an update. I ordered one of these http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=261170130579&index=0&nav=SEARCH&nid=87388073446
Should have it next week to test but based on the seller's description and testing on similar devices, sounds promising. I'll report back.
I have just bought it.
Initially USB hosting works, but I have no chance to charge at this time.
-----update-----
The female micro USB jack does not charge the phone like the one for Galaxy Tab.
Do you think we still need to add a 40.2k ohm resistor just in the galaxy s3 and will a stock kernel work?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I would like to add I managed to get an OTG + charging cable working for the Note 2 (N7100) using a cable made with these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061
But... the 4.1.2 update stopped the USB from working on my Note 2, and someone else is reporting a similar problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38611244&postcount=42 . What happens is the Note 2 does detect it's using a dock, but the USB functionality doesn't work for some odd reason (even after a reboot).
I will reply again if it starts working in a future update.

Probably the same as the s3 - shorted pins = otg+no charging, resistor fools the phone into thinking it has an accessory/dock that can charge safely.

It sees that it's in a "dock" but nothing I plug in will work. It does charge though. If I short out the pins I get host mode, but no charging. This is with the Jedi rom, not stock.
I remember when touchpad was introduced HP did a whole shpeal about touch to share which basically used NFC I presume.. so is there a chance of getting NFC working on android or are drivers closed source for it?

It wasn't nfc . it was Bluetooth modified to touch share with other webos devices

Nfc is technically not a heavy sharing medium... It establishes the connection and whatever needed to be transferred went through Bluetooth. Otherwise there was no reason to touch them together

I know what NFC is. The Touchpad doesn't have it.
Touchpad does not have Near Field Communication technologies built into it.

Touchpad doesnot have nfc it just use bluetooth to transfer and communicate with other device!! I have 2 touchpad and that touch thing works between those two but it always prompts me to turn on bluetooth to share stuff!! So no NFC

I was under the impression that's what android relies on as well (that data transfers over Bluetooth once the NFC is established, but it's turned on automatically). Possible HP have there own proprietary system to detect 2 HP products touched together.

Hello,
I have 3 NFC tags, 1 I use near my front door to turn on and off WiFi and the other one on my bedside table to turn on alarm clock.
I have 1 more, and I can't find any uses for it.
I've been searching the internet for good ideas and I didn't find a useful one. Can you help me?

Enable magic packet/wake on lan (WOL) on your computer
Find an app that can send these magic packets to your sleeping computer
Computer is awakened.
I think it works on ethernet LAN too...not sure on that, though.
