So with the recent great work by jcase and others in achieving root, are people still waiting for the DE on VZW?
I think I will still go DE for two reasons: (1) 32 GB and (2) guaranteed of unlocked bootloader in case all root exploits get patched down the road. It sounds like everyone really likes the stock experience on the phone, but if I get bored down the road it'll be nice to have the guarantee of being able to load custom ROMs.
Although, if MotoMakr for VZW launches before DevEd, that might tip the scale for me.
What are others thinking?
I have until the 26th to decide. I'm keeping my options open, and hoping to at least have the option by then.
Starting to get impatient waiting for the developer edition to be released. There's been little no other information provided about its release date from what I know of. Since I'm sure the new Nexus phone won't be arriving on Verizon, the dev edition of the Moto X is the only phone I'm considering.
UPDATE: So I checked Punit Soni's Google+ page to see if I could find something regarding the release date. Someone joked with him saying they were going to get a Nexus 5 since it would be released sooner than the Moto X dev edition and Mr. Soni replied "Not happening ". From what I remember, a new Nexus phone usually appears early on in October, no? Maybe we could expect the Moto X dev edition no later than that?
i am defently waiting for the dev edition. i rather do that than have no unlocked bootloader. and if the consumer moto x bootloader does get unlocked it will be a longer wait for that...nd the i really dont want to have to deal with loki patched images. i also have to pay full price i rather have a 32 gig phone anyways

I'm Punting, the dev ed took too long. I'll wait for the nexus 5.
So does jcase method unlock the bootloader on the non dev ed? I'm waiting for the dev ed and just wondering will I be using jcase's PwnMyMoto to root and unlock the bootloader on dev edition?

I'm thinking of getting the droid 3. but from what i have read its all most impossible to unlock the Motorola bootloader or to even get a recovery to flash custom rom's would this be worth it? or should one wait till the htc dual core slider comes out.

or will they make the htc double shot for Verizon

thanks for any info and thanks to XDA for starting this forum
It's not possible to unlock it, however it's possible to work around it using 2nd init, different kinds of injection into the kernel etc. pp.
I guess the screen size, resolution and keyboard makes it the phone of choice as office replacement...
I would get this one if I needed a keyboard.
My two cents is that it may be a matter of preference. I say that being a current Droid X user, where it has a locked bootloader, but devs have been able to partially get around that for root and use Droid X Bootstrapper to access recovery ... so we can load some ROMs, leaks, make backups, etc. Of course, we cannot load custom kernels so 'tweaking' has its limits. But it sure beats running a stock phone loaded with bloatware!
How tightly locked the Droid 3 bootloader turns out to be will likely determine my next phone when my renewal comes up. I want a physical keyboard and I'd prefer the Droid 3 if devs can at least work the magic they've been able to do on the Droid X (and Droid 2). But if the Droid 3 is locked up so tight that devs can't get root, then probably I'll be heading towards one of those HTC models you referenced or continue to make do without a slide-out keyboard.
I want phones to be fully unlocked and time will tell if Moto delivers on their promises (kind of doubt they will). Still custom ROM's, themes, backups, etc. are as essential as custom kernels. I know coming from both the ThunderBolt and Droid Charge that it was great to have full access, but it does come at a cost if you are not careful.
That said I am willing to donate to the devs who are willing to support the Droid 3. Its really that simple. I know Woodyman over at droidforums.net is planning on building a AOSP ROM but what we need is root and CWM Recovery.
Are there any additional devs supporting this phone?

Just my two cents guys, but I read today, that Motorola will be rolling out an optional, bootloader-unlocking OTA, sometime in Q4. Seems like it's going to be a bit of a wait, but we WILL be getting the ability to unlock the device. Also heard (someone please verify if this is true) that an unlocked version will be made available on launch day (I know it rolled out in some spots on the 7th, but my store, in Jersey won't have it 'till this Thursday). No word on added price for the unlocked unit, but I think I'm gonna give it a go!

Can you link to where you read any of this? Right now no stores have it. It is shipping from online orders. Stores and best buy get it on thursday. That would be strange to ship a different version but I hope something about this all is true.
that verizon slider looks like the htc merge that never made it to verizon
Well, I can tell you if they offer an unlocked version on launch day, mine will be going back to just so I can get one. But somehow I doubt they will be offering two versions. Unlocked bootloaders, Q4 WTF Moto get on it now.
Hmm went to best buy today. They said the d3 will be sold unlocked tomorrow? Interested to see if true.

I am very disappointed . my android experience has been nothing but a headache... I have had a Samsung continuum, Droid x2 and now the Droid bionic.. ALL in which have been left out in the cold by VERIZON... It just Burns me up that I finally thought this device would be the one to finally get special attention but ha I was wrong... It was a flagship device now it's just a ugly stepchild... next thing you know this device won't get OFFICIAL ICS anymore. I wish just once I would luck out on a device for once. Feel free to let out your android woes I was just venting a little.

To the contrary, I am very happy with my Bionic. It ran fine on stock .905, but I have flashed the .232 ICS update and it's even better. I think it is extremely likely we'll get the official ICS update. I don't think the phone needs special attention. It stands on its merits and I don't think I would be happier with a Razr, Galaxy, or some other phone.
I can understand that but by special attention I meant bootloader unlocking.. It is a good phone though.

Yeah if Moto doesn't step up to the plate and unlock the Bionic I will be pissed off. And I will vote with my wallet when it comes time for another phone! However, I honestly believe ICS is not too far off into the the future and the .232 leak is quite nice.
As I recall everyone always knew Bionics bootloader was locked and no one ever promised it would be unlocked.
Unfortunately I didn't know so I guess I'm that 1% who didn't..

They never did. They were ambiguous on whether it would be unlockable or not. Some people took that ambiguity to mean it would be unlockable.
I for one Love my bionic. I'm also in the 1% not knowing about the locked bootloader but I blame myself for not researching that before I purchased the phone. I'm rooted and on ICS .232 and LOVE it.I don't need to be rooted. I had CM7 on my last device but ICS is everything I wanted and it works so smoothly. Plus it bumped my clock speed up to 1200Mhz. Honestly the specs on this phone is top shelf and was free with a 2year contract (got it June 28th). No other phone was priced this way that was 4g dual core with a gig of DDR2 ram except the LG Lucid ($30). My only complaint is the screen. 720p resolution would have been nice but for what it is and what I paid I could not complain.
Your in the same boat as me I also did not research about the bootloader... So I blame myself also on that part.

I came from a HTC and may go back to HTC or Samsung when the time comes, but I've got almost 14 months till I can upgrade and a lot can change in that amount of time. For now I don't have the upgrade bug. The Bionic works terrific for me. Well, thats a lie. I want the OTA ICS update lol... but don't we all.
So I'm a Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) user and looking to get a new phone. I'm looking at getting a Moto X and I have a few questions about it. Mainly in regards to rooting and getting cyanogenmod up and running on it. I don't mind using its stock rom as it seems rather close to stock android, but I'm curious as to how hard is it to root a Moto X on Verizon and getting cyanogenmod on it and keep the special features like the shake to unlock the camera and the voice commands. Also how is the battery on the device (I normally stick to 3G and maybe web surf a bit and look at my RSS feeds through the day not a lot of really data intense apps.) Thanks.
I just got my Moto X a few days ago and found that I enjoyed the experience so much on it that I decided not to root. I have been rooting my phones for a few years and finally found a stock experience that I enjoy.
I don't see a reason why you would want to lose the amazing features that Moto X offers by switching to CM.
You can root the phone (there are guides around the forums for this) and add Xposed modules to modify some parts of the phone, however, any OTA updates will cause some headaches. With 4.4 around the corner for the Moto X I am going to hold off rooting for a while and enjoy what Motorola gave to us.

I'm also a long time rooter/CM kinda guy, galaxy nexus, GS3 etc etc, and I can honestly say that the only reason I would root this thing would be to change the battery icon (aaagh I hate it so much)
But this phone is so so good out of the box, it's just not worth wasting effort trying...although it would be nice to drop a new kernel on it.

I will eventually root this thing... someday. I would also like a new kernel and I want to have Greenify back and some small customization options, but for now I am going to enjoy not troubleshooting some sort of issue that comes as a side effect of rooting.
I I just switched to the Moto X from the gnex on Sprint. I am very happy with my decision. The battery life is an enormous improvement over the gnex. I have always rooted my devices and installed custom roms, but I am yet to do so on the Moto X. It has a great stock set up. I will likely root once 4.4 is avaliable, but only to get rid of the sprint crap.

That's great to hear about the battery and stock ROM. Has anyone used the Motomaker site yet (Mainly this goes out to AT&T owners). I'd like to get mine through that when it opens up for most carriers on the 11th. But I'm curious exactly how does the process goes with activation and such. And I just noticed Verizon only offers the 16gig model is there anyway to get a 32gig model with big red.

Moto Maker allows an option for 32gb, so you could wait for that on Verizon, or the Developer Edition is 32gb but you have to pay $549 for it.

Came from a galaxy "nexus" to the X and love it. I finally did root it and have played with Xposed a bit, and I will probably never flash a rom again. Xposed let's me change all of the things that I cared about on AOKP like having a torch toggle in QS, and statusbar/navbar transparency. To be honest, if I didn't want to enable native tether privileges (still unlimited here), I wouldn't be rooted.

I LOVE HTC but I had the one for five weeks and at least 1 out of 4 calls were dropped randomly or my cheek would hang up the call. I loved the look of the one and thought sense 5 was the best sense yet. However due to the dropped calls the phone just did not work for me.
I have talked to others that returned the phone for the same reason
I wouldn't use the HTC one either. The sense UI is rather sluggish (I've used in the past before - HTC incredible and I've used the demo of the HTC one they had the verizon store and it was the same slowness), Not at all a fan of beats by dre/monster cables. And the button layout is kinda eh. Used to having 4 icons at the bottom with the main menu button being near the center.

Question for the group... Will rooting alone allow you to install CM? Is CM available to be flashed via safestrap?
I ask because -> http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...cyanogenmod-10-2-experimental-nightly-builds/ and -> http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Xt1060_Info seem to indicate its for Unlocked bootloader or Developer Edition. And since there is no way yet to unlock the non-Dev Edition's boot loader, it further appears its really for Dev Ed only. And all the roms that aren't a leak from Moto in the Developer sections here also state you need a Developer Edition X or Unlocked boot loader.
Vergil117, as far as rooting, JCASE has released ways to root the initial shipping rom version, and the OTA update for the camera fix. So that is easy enough. I have rooted mine, just to tether (I still have unlimited). As with other devices, if you don't have an unlocked boot loader, rooting after new ROM updates are pushed is uncertain.
Like most have posted, I think the X in its stock form is very nice, and I don't find a need to flash a alternate ROM. If you flash to CM, you'll loose the Moto customization like touch-less control, shake for camera, etc.
So I ordered a moto X through the Motomaker software on monday night. It still says est delivery by the 15 but it also says it hasn't shipped. Kinda worried.

Same, I got to step 2 on Tuesday morning and that's been it so far. I'm hopeful we'll get our shipping notifications soon so we can get our phones before the weekend. But I know Moto probably got slammed with a bunch of orders on Monday so some of us may have to wait till next week...
Update to the shipping post. I got the fedex info and it should be here Friday yay.
Motorola's update system is way behind. When I ordered mine, over a month ago, It didn't say shipped until the morning it arrived and I didn't get a tracking number until an hour or so after I had already received the device.
But it arrived the day they said it would... I'd rather the info be late instead of the phone
Moto X rocking 4.4
Oh I know the feeling, Fedex was being lazy yesterday with my order. I live in a gated apartment building, the main lobby is like right next to the door to the building. I honestly think they saw the door and said oh no one here and went away. So I had to call them and tell them to drop it off at a fedex store.
Two days ago I switched back to my Verizon Moto X from my nexus 5 after figuring out that Sprint and T-Mobile are unbearable in my area. I'm rooted on 4.4 and am getting the update push. So I was thinking is it even worth unlocking the boot loader if I am perfectly happy with stock Moto ROM and kernel and just use safestrap so I don't lose system write?

honestly I had the same question a few days ago and I went ahead and simply had my bootloader unlocked by that Chinese guy.
I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing anything is absolutely stable system wise when switching to 4.4.2 instead of "maybe" everything working alright.
This way too, if going forward android is updated again, it will be easy to side-load or even take an OTA; versus safestrap and/or 4.2.2 root method may not work at all or cause more issues in the future.
I guess what i'm getting at is, the unlocked bootloader will guarantee the longevity of my moto X
my 2 cents :good:
You may be stuck on 4.4 forever if you want proper root.
And when official updates end for the X, roms will keep it updated....losing Moto features maybe, but without root....you'll still be stuck.
Doesn't seem like a lot of money to avoid all that.

Why do you want 4.4? If its that important for you to be able to root and disable write protection that you would return a phone because it had 4.4.2, then consider getting the Developer Edition X for Verizon.
I realize there will be cost differences if you are "renewing" your contract, or using the subsidized pricing, compared to having to pay full price for the Dev Edition, but with the Retail and Moto Maker X and its locked, you'll be stuck on 4.4 from now on. As your actions indicate you are aware 4.4.2 Breaks the current root/WPDisable processes, so you have to understand the likelihood of Root/WPDisable for 4.4.2 and beyond at this point are slim to none on a locked bootloader.
While JCASE has a root exploit to use on 4.4.2, he said due to his job and other commitments, he wont release it until the fall. Who knows what ROM version will be out for the X by then (4.4.3 or above maybe?) and will it patch that exploit? And that still leaves the question of Disabling Write Protection, without which root isn't nearly as useful (many would say worthless because any changes you make while rooted would be lost the next time you power off/on). This "late" in the game, with Moto already saying they are working on an X replacement, will a WPDisable method come to 4.4.2 and beyond?
I understand rooting, disabling write protection on 4.4, and then using Safestrap to run 4.4.2 is still an option. But its not one I've really followed, so I don't know how stable it is compared to just running 4.4.2 by itself. And I don't know the possibilities of running future roms this way (with 4.4 as a base and something higher than 4.4.2 via SS).
Your actions (going through the hassle of returning a phone because it had 4.4.2 already installed and possibly paying a restock fee, then trying to find out if MotoMaker phones still ship with 4.4) would indicate that Rooting and Disabling write protection is extremely important. So I would say Developer Edition is your best option. You can always unlock the bootloader, which disables write protection, and root it, and doing so doesn't void the warranty (at least the hardware warranty)
Oh, and if you don't like the woven white back with black front on the Dev Edition, consider Dbrand skins or a case.
