My Z is a few months old now, and has been functioning fine so far. Now and then though, the camera goes completely nuts- by taking photos with yellowish/brownish bars across it. The bars are visible on screen too. I can't figure out what's causing this (I've wiped the back panel), but it seems like it only happens for indoor shots, especially when the subject of the photo is close to the camera (about 20cm away).
Is this something to worry about? Are there many other users with the same problem, and should I send it in for servicing/ to get a replacement unit? It's still under warranty.
I'm on build 101.1.A.1.253, running stock 4.1.2, for what it's worth.

No, but if my pictures were coming out like that as well as my display looking like it too whilst using the camera, it would be going back.

Yeah same here, it seems more the logical. The shop you bought it can't call that a good picture.
I done some research on this
this is under fluorescent lighting @ ISO 1600
This is under fluorescent lighting @ ISO100 (still a little brownish)
This is under fluorescent lighting @ ISO 400? With HDR ON
This is under sunlight @ ISO 1600 With HDR ON
I have tested also on ther condition, did not upload it/ deleted
but i can sort of deduce this
1. The brown bars are caused by the fluorescent lighting that have a frequency clash with the camera refresh rate.
2. The problem seems minimize at ISO100, appears slightly @ ISO200 but worsen once over ISO400
3. The pictures above is taken at close range ~ 8cm away with the phone place on an elevated box.
4. with fluorescent lighting, the HDR ON affect on as low as ISO100, and causes the ghost/double image and really tits up on higher ISO. This issue lessen with natural sunlight where the image maintain crisp until ISO 1600.
5. I cannot use the self timer as the flash light for the timer sometimes f-up the focus (this is a real f-up)
6. There are still other modes i have yet to test out such as burst etc

I didn't bother testing as much as you did, but all that does seem to make sense! Did some searching and it seems like some Sony cameras have this problem (point and shoot, or DSLR, I can't remember). It is an indoor only thing like you said, under fluorescent lighting.
Wonder if this qualifies as a bug or a hardware limitation...
Howdy! I've got this phone for 3 days now. One of the main reasons to choose this one, is the camera. It should give stunning pictures, right? Wrong.
I can't for the love of me get even one good picture. Each and every one is either out of focus, distorted in some way, or it looks like there's not enough light (even when the picture is taken outside).
I started out with the automatic mode. What I dislike there, is that it never chooses the max. resolution. Manual mode, I can't get it to make good pictures either; though that might be because of lack of expertise.
Is my device broken? Am I doing something wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'm currently on the newest firmware. I'm running RomAur v3.2. I had the same problem on a different modified stock ROM of the latest firmware build.
I only know for good light condition, you set the ISO to as low as possible and 20mp manual and need a pair of steady hands. I still havent figure out low light condition, some ppl suggest twilight mode.
1. manual mode. the automode is bull****
2. fullsize. you can resize after the shooting^^
3. let the iso as low as possible. remember that the image becomes a little brighter than in the preview. use flash if its dark
i dont have any problems with the camera, even if taking pictures of moving obejcts in dark conditions. just stop shaking your hands and geht the iso lower^^

This is with bad lighting (Sun was shining at the cam), a view from my window. Is this the quality I should expect from this phonecam?
Inside, it's never sharp. There simply seems to be too little light to make sharp pictures. The flash does nearly nothing. The low ISO setting makes it lag very much as well, reducing the screen fps to 3 or something like that. I guess it's difficult for the device to keep up.

there are two apps much better than FV-5
1) Pro Capture: More details. Sharper pictures. aiding grid to get great shots. (but you can't manage ISO level and the max resolution is 8MPX)
2) Camera Zoom FX: Faster focus. More MPX option (18MPX resolution is available)

Then my device is broken. I tested a few shots next to a Galaxy Note 3, and it made much (MUCH) better pictures than my Z1. Tried all kinds of settings, no way to make it right. So mine must be ****. I'm getting it exchanged because of a lazy pixel anyway, but I'm really disappointed in Sony here. I thought they made quality products. :x

Mmm, can you explain me better auto mode? Do you selected a scene? Do you select single focus point or multi point?
Metering? (Can you explain this)
HDR or image stabilizer?
Do you use the hardware button to take pictures or the software one? I noticed that using the hw one after you press focus and then more to shoot produce a little movement that can make your photo bad. Am I the only one that find the camera button too hard?
Thanks a lot!!!!

As we all know the sensor and lens on the Z3 are some of the best on the market right now. However, for some reason, Sony, who make maybe the best compact cameras out there, seems to have failed miserably in regard to the camera software in its phones. All photos come out with little detail, soft focus, artifacts and overprocessed. Do you think that will get fixed in 5.0(2)? Will the camera finally be comparable to, say, the Galaxy Note 4 or some of the Lumias?
Regards.

In theory yes. With Lollipop we will be able to take RAW images with the camera due to the new api. RAW images are unprocessed, straight from the sensor. The Sony camera sensor is good but the software image processing isn't. Taking photos in RAW eliminates the poor image processing so the images should be much much better.

I actually agree on this, especially when taking photos. All the other devices I used before my Z3 Compact did not try to focus again after I already touched focus a certain area, but my Z3C actually does so as I press the shutter button. It also has trouble trying to focus on really close objects, only able to get precise focus 1/10 of the time.
I personally use google camera for simple, clear, low-processed pictures. The drawback is that the photos cannot be saved on the sd card w/o root.
Or, you can very well use the manual mode - this one also is pulling some nice photos, w/o blur,

Atleast on the regular Z3 you can choose to save photos and videos on the sd card directly.
Camera, the three blocks, settings icons.
I'm currently playing around with the app ABetterCamera and so far images are taken faster and low light photos look much better. They have an option to choose where to store the photos and if you choose external card it gives you the message Android doesn't allow that...BUT there is an option to choose custom folder which I pointed to the SDCard and it worked!
Yeah I find the camera terrible too.
My dads Note 2 takes much better pictures. If I put them side by side at a certain distance and take a picture of a piece of paper, on one I can clearly read what is written on it, and on the other it's all blurrines. I didn't expect this camera to suck that big especially compared to such an old low-res camera.
If that was not enough, colors are much more innatural on the sony, while the note 2 reproduces them much better...

I personally will not get my hopes up that Sony will do anything to the camera software to improve image quality just because 5.0 supports RAW format. Sony may not even include RAW support in their version of 5.0.
So many times, phone manufacturers pick and choose which features of android to implement or substitute that feature with their own.

The formal answer is "no" - it will NOT fix the poor image processing. RAW format is not supported by Sony in Android 5.0

Hardware is indeed great, but software is very bad, and since the combination of both make the picture, the camera needs to be fixed (software part).
I mean look at all the phones using SONY sensors, they take excellent pictures on AUTO. Z3? Nope, rarely. Manual is super, but sometimes you do not have the time to fiddle around with the settings. And no DNG RAW in 5.0.2? Well, totally wasted potential of this phone's camera.
I'm very disappointed with the Z3C camera too... I mean, considering the specs, I was hoping for a lot much better pictures.
I´ve just got mine, I did a lot of research before buying a new phone (I had a Note 2), and the main reasons why I bought this phone are: size/specs, battery life and camera. I also considered buying the Moto Maxx (Brazilian Droid Turbo variant) but the Z3C compactness (is this a word?) made me chose it and I'm kind of regretting it a little bit... lol

The iPhone with 2 cameras have optical zoom. So not all phones. Probably some huawei phones as well.
If you want clear zoom (for visually impaired) get a zoom lens that clips on.
As for fuzziness (this note is for OP) try fussing with the app. HQ mode etc.. Also is it low light or bright light?

Hi, bought the phone 2 days ago, because it's not with 888, it's not with curved display and has a ultra wide camera with AF and macro capabilities with raw support.
To my surprise, the quality of the raw file from the ultra wide is worse than from the periscope - there are some strange bright dots when you zoom in to 100%, which lead to overall bad quality of the ready image. I guess they are the phase focus pixels, but they shouldn't be visible without any heavy editing.
So, is it just me, or the problem is global, so I know how to proceed with this? I'm leaving a crop depicting the problem.
Are you sure the ultra wide angle has AF? but yeah it looks weird...

I don't even bother shooting in jpg, this is Motorola and they suck in camera performance and resolution logic.
But, I shoot raw, which is possible even with the selfie cam, and after a minute of editing I get sharp and impressive images, and that's why I bought it - the sensors itself are quite capable. If I find a solution to the problem with the ultrawide, the phone is a keeper...
