Good evening everyone,
I have recently bought (and bricked) a Kindle Fire HD from Amazon with the statement “Previous Generation” in the title.
Now, after spending a week reading this forum with guides, tutorials and referenced articles I have concluded that there is a “huge mess” out there in identifying and naming each Kindle version.
As far as I can tell my Kindle should be a 2nd Generation of the HD series, also called “2012 Version” in some threads but although an extensive reading I could not figure out if there is a way to clearly identify a model from its hardware serial number / features.
The next logical question would be “Which guide/tutorial should I follow in order to Root and customize my Kindle thus transforming it in a full-featured Android tablet?”
If I suppose that my model is correctly identified by the definition above, than I should follow this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848) although there is no mention about generation in the title.
I would be glad If anyone with a bit of “field experience” might help me clarifying this thoughts and avoiding bricking another device.
Thank you in advance for your time, your courtesy, and the great job you provide maintaining this board.
If it has a camera it is a 2012 model. If it was 2013 then all you could do is root it. Anyways if it is indeed the 2012 model then use this to root it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
And I suggest this to get recovery and 2nd boot loader installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
Just remember to check the first checlbox about downgrading the bootloader, I should be followed with a warning in red, if you don't do this you will need a fastboot cable to fix it afterwards. Oh and make sure to put a ROM and its corresponding gapps on ahead of time because it will boot loop and only let you go into recovery once you install 2nd bootloader + twrp.

Dear stunts513,
firstly thank you for your kind and complete answer!
My kindle has a front-facing camera, so thanks to your detailed description I can say It is a 2012 model.
Thank you for the tutorial links, especially for the tips about downgrading bootloader and correctly preparing for the 2nd bootloader + twrp.
Your help has been really precious.

Hi all, I'm posting after weeks lurking here how to make my Kindle Fire HD 2 a real table. I followed many steps but now I can't even switch on the kindle so I ask you if I can solve my problem.
The kindle I have is the Kindle Fire HD (I guess 2) with Microphone and Webcam. The Version is 7.2.1
At first I rooted the device using the instruction on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1891939
Eveything worked and not without any effort. I had to install the Android SDK and test many times the adb tools.
Before that I tried the KUF 0.9.6 but didn't work.
After the rooting I wanted to install TWRP, my purpose is to have a tablet with Android.
I followed the instruction on this page: http://finditmore.info/2012/09/19/install-team-win-recovery-project-kindle-fire/
I guess here is the mistake. I downloaded the twrp 2.3 and firefirefire 1.2 and installed as wrote in that page, but now I can't switch on the kindle. Really is like death.
Could anyone explain me what I did wrong? Could I still recover the tablet?
Thanks in advance

The post you linked explains a method for KINDLE FIRE 1ST GENERATION, there's no possibility for now to get a recovery working in our devices regardless of whether the device is a Kindle Fire HD or a Kindle Fire 2. So, you probably bricked your device. From my point of view you only have 2 choices: You can retUrn it to Amazon and pray, or you can try with this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254.
But please, read everything before doing anything.
Hope it helps

Thanks. I'm downloading the system from the thread you pointed me out. But what make me very disappointed is the fact that the kindle isn't switching on anymore. This is really odd.
I'll try to fix it if I can't I'll send to amazon and I'll pray.
Anyway, where are the instruction to flash the Kindle HD 7.2.1?
Thanks!
There is no way you can get your device working now. As far as we know, only Amazon has the ability to fix a second generation device that has an unsigned bootloader or recovery installed.
Hi,
My girlfriend won Kindle Fire HD, but it's kind of useless because we live in Poland and don't have US/UK credit card. I was thinking about rooting this device and installing "normal" JB Android. I don't realy know anything about rooting so I google it, also my friend show me this forum. Now I'm a little worry becaues I see that people have a lots of problems with rooted devices. Maybe you could answer some of my questions.
But first some informations about my device:
Kindle Fire HD 7'' 32GB
System Version: 7.2.2_user_2218220
Questions:
Is rooting safe (when I'm using tutorial step-by-step for my version of system and device)?
Is rooting legal?
Could rooted device automatic update system and "broke" because of root?
I found many tutorials about rooting, but only few about installing new system on device. Is it so complicated that only a few people do it or just it's similar for all version of rooted system?
If I root my device and install JB Android instead Amazon version of Android could I forget about rooting and use my device without fear like any other tablet with JB Android?
Appreciate your time.
1. It is safe as long as you are careful. Type something wrong and you can cause damage. I have followed the instructions and had no problems
2. Not going to comment
3. Possibly. Rooting allows the use to change the system and break things and also install things that become necessary for the system to run that are then broken with an update causing the system to be bricked. If you are careful, not a problem though. I have had at least one Amazon update and survived - just had to re-root.
4. The reason you have not found much is that people are only just starting to get to grips with it. Have a look at the front page of reverendkyle dot com - new member so I can't post links - for more details.
5. You will need to fix the bootloader first - see link in 4 - but once you have done that and loaded CM10 (JB) then it is all yours.
Hi all
I have a new Kindle Fire HD 7". According to 'About' it's version is 7.3.1. The model number on the back is X43Z60
I've read just about every thread in this forum about rooting, flashing recoveries, using adb, fastboot etc etc.. I even made my own factory cable. I have been successful in rooting the device, I can access it via adb with no issues and I have even managed to install SafeStrap on it (though no ROM's will install) but I can NOT get it to boot into fastboot mode. I have successfully written to the idme bootmode 4002 and rebooted it but it has no effect. Windows does not detect any device other than the adb interface at any point. I even tried this while booted into safestrap and it too had no effect.
I'd like to know if anyone is able to say definitively what it is I need to do to get a custom ROM working. It doesn't help either that people seem to refer to the devices they have written their software for simply as "Kindle fire HD 7" with no mention of version, etc. meaning I have little indication as to the suitability of the instructions.
I saw mention of a 'short' mod where I am able to take the cover off and short a particular exposed connector to the frame and enable fastboot mode, but couldn't actually find any further information. Not afraid to give it a go but I need to know what to do.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks
A fast boot cable just puts five volts on pin 4 on the micro usb...that's the short mod....you short the five volt pin 1 to pin 4...note this has to be on the micro usb side you will blow up your usb port if you do it on the usb end
Safe strap is not the route you want to take I would at this point restore back to stock and install twrp as your second boot loader then installing a Rom should be simple

Visit the thread in my signature for the Kindle Fire HD 7". I addressed the issue of Amazon OS 7.3.1 with Step 1: Rooting.
Thanks for the info about the cable, ended up not needing it

Thanks!! I must have overlooked your guide, the titles of a few threads are very similar
Yours is the only one that didn't require the use of fastboot to get TWRP on the device, it worked flawlessly!
Cheers

With the Kindle Fire 8.9" 2012 device name Jem, they had to use a second bootloader to get around amazon's locked off one. Has a second bootloader been pursued for this tablet yet?
And now that I have root how do I move my google now launcher to the system folder?

I am not experienced with that yet, so I cannot answer your second question, but as far as the second bootloader goes, I have not heard anyone mention that yet... Currently people are talking about using flashfire, so if that doesn't work, I am sure some devs will start pursuing this new direction. Thanks for the idea!
Search the forum for safestrap. There's been lots of discussion on the subject. In short, it depends on working kexec, which we do not have yet although progress has been made.
This thread appears to be vacant for a while so I thought I would ask directly. I inherited my wife's old Kindle yesterday and I hate the interface. I don't want to brick it but it wouldn't break my heart. I am not an IT guy but I understand the general concepts. I have seen some videos on Youtube with what appears to be, almost too easy, instructions on how to root directly from the Kindle.
I could deal if I just got GoLauncher, Google Play and some of the apps I commonly use on my Android phone but a recent installation of 1Market or Market1 proved an act in futility (Google won't work with my OS, can only find China GoLauncher) I searched my phone for apks but assume I need more apps or instruction.
So, I am asking if I should root - which rooting process should I use and if I do - where do you get Jellybean, KitKat, etc and can you get Marshmallow?
Kindle Fire 7, 2nd Gen (2012) with 7.5.1 update
Disregard, I rooted the Kindle last night

If there are tips and tricks for certain roms, the op will usually post them in the thread, just read carefully and read it again.
