It might be a dumb question but I want to make sure. If I root, can I restore to factory default settings without triggering something? I don't think this accessory has a knox counter or anything like that, does it?
I think you should be able to flash the original firmware md5 using Odin back and that will remove everything.
If you're worried about anybody at a store or anything being able to tell whether this was ever rooted, I doubt they can tell, or that they would even bother to look.
I doubt Samsung would bother with Knox on this type of device...

When Gingerbread comes out i want to root my phone and have a clean install of the rom.
What information will i loose and need to backup manually?
Contacts and mail data is saved with my google-account i guess.
SMS are already backed up by an app.
I guess most app data is saved on the sd-card? So if i just i recover that no much will be lost i think?
Am i right?
Am i missing something?
I don't want to end with essential data lost after the root.
Thanks!
Do you know what "root" is? What rooting is?
Your question doesn't make sense.
You don't lose anything when you root...except the restrictions on total access to your phone.

Ok, I'll elaborate:
The green part doesn't have anything to do with Gingerbread. You want to root your phone - you can.
If you're waiting for Gingerbread OTA and planning to root after that - you might be stuck, if there are no exploits, or forced to unlock the bootloader. If you want it rooted - no point and no logic in installing it until it comes pre-rooted or until root is confirmed.
Blue part: you mean Gingerbread ROM? To install it you don't need to root. On the contrary, rooting might only disturb you and make installing official ROM impossible - no logic here.
"Clean install of the ROM"? To make it "clean", you need to erase all your data. But you want to preserve your data, so no logic here either.
Now, what were you trying to ask?
He wants to know if he can have his gingerbread, and eat it... :-/
Actually, I think he's just looking to preserve his SMS, email, contacts, etc, while wiping.
Most things, like email, and contacts will be preserved because they are web based, but SMS and others will need to be backed up. It all depends on what you are trying to preserve...
Although, given that gingerbread will be an update, and not a new ROM, there's really no need to wipe...

I think I know what he's wondering, probably because I'm a newb to rooting too, and I'm thinking the same thing.
Let's say you root, but don't unlock the bootloader. Doing this you don't lose any data, you only lose data when you touch the bootloader (right??).
Then you want to get GB when the OTA comes out. Since you are on stock 2.2.2, you should just get it same as if you didn't root (and that will unroot your phone???).
Then, you will probably be able to root again, once someone much more knowledgeable than us, figures out how to do it, and hopefully adds it in to superoneclick.
Only thing I would wonder is why wouldn't we be able to root the N1... I thought it was made to be rooted without any fuss??
You're correct.
I believe Google's stance on rooting is that unlocking the bootloader is the official way to gain access to the phone. Other methods are exploits of potential security holes, and so Google try to close those holes...
...or, at least that's what it used to state on the home page of the AOSP website.

I am returning my phone back to stock so I can trade it in. I found a few threads on here that have ways to unroot but some seem questionable. Can anyone point me in the right direction to unroot an official Kit Kat updated device?
Thanks
Assuming you have supersu, uninstall all of your apps that have root access (for safestrap, busybox, etc make sure to uninstall the in-app stuff first), i would reboot here but that may not be necessary...then open up supersu and choose "full unroot". Then factory reset and double check status is official ☺
If you get a custom screen after that try rerooting then full unroot with supersu again
Edit: I stand corrected - flashing NC2 with Odin is easiest
Yeah I have su. So before I do this should I restore my stock rom I have backed up via safestrap? I am currently running dynamic kat 5.0
You can also reinstall factory firmware with Odin, then factory reset.

Yea @440bro 's suggestion is way easier since Odin removes all of that! unroot with SuperSU does work but it's a long way around for just returning to stock

Did you backup stock rom before you flashed the custom rom in safestrap? if yes, reflash your backup in safestrap then the steps in post #2 should work. If no, I'm really not sure how going through that unroot process with SuperSU while still on a custom rom would work out...Odin is much easier and more reliable so if there's any way you can get to a PC you might want to go that route.
Also if you're selling online you might find some people who do want to buy a rooted Note 3...I sold a phone on swappa a few months ago and there were people looking specifically for rooted phones. The 'cartoon thing' is safestrap and is exactly what you want to see when you turn on a rooted AT&T Note 3

Thanks for your feel good message...made my day. I thought I backed up stock rom however being an obviously root virgin...When I went to factory reset, everything was gone except for my ugly cartoony friend. Luckily I am able to read in small doses so I was able to do whatever it was I did to get her running factory...still rooted and unlocked. When you mentioned that people on swappa might be interested in a rooted device WITH my lonely friend at startup? I felt all fuzzy. I will post an ad on swappa later today in your honor my mysterious phoneguardian angel. Thanks again.

Looks like I'll need to go the long route to unroot. I have a Mac book and I can't find Odin for it
My wife just got a brand new ATT S5 running 4.4.4
I just wanted to give her the cleanest slate to start with before she starts loading it up with apps and whateve other junk she might do.
Any advice best route to do it? Would you still flash recovery and root?
Thanks for any tips.
AT&T has a locked bootloader, so you can't flash a custom recovery...Your best bet is to downgrade to a rootable kernel, get root...Then follow the process all the way to lollipop and debloat after. At least that's how I understand it.
Thanks for the reply. Any idea if there's a good thread that explains how best to do all that?

There's absolutely no point in rooting that phone if your wife is a normal user. It will only leave the door open for things to become messed up.
Disable whichever bloat apps you know she is uninterested in, and leave it at that.
I usually freeze apps with TB...how would you do it with no root?

Quite a bit of it can be disabled(same as freezing) from the stock app manager. Just click on the app and hit disable.
If you do go the rooting route, you might as well install a solid debloated rom, and then remove root after it's set up. That would best accomplish your goal re: cleanest slate possible

Make sure to do your research on ROMs. Your new S5 has a 12 month warranty which gets voided if the KNOX bit is tripped, which installing non official ROMs may do. Once it is tripped, there isn't a way to go back.

That is actually false, while the flash counter can be reset knox will remain 0x1 if you trip it, its an efuse so it physically changes the board when you trip. That said theres no way on a g900a to trip it as the only way to trip it is not flashing unofficial roms but booting into an unofficial recovery like twrp or cwm which we cant do.

Can you provide citation that it can be "easily reset"? See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738175&page=34 stating that once the knox warranty void is 0x1 there is no going back.
Thanks

Don't forget custom recoveries will probably still trip knox. I'm holing off on rooting until a few more people do it successfully without tripping knox.
Awesome. Now I kinda wish I had held out for something like this.
Used this method to gain root, worked perfectly fine. Knox still says 0x0, booting into recovery displays "dm-verity verification failed in recovery" but I'm not 100% sure what this means.

I can almost guarantee they will have a root check for samsung pay to work. It will also most likely be easy to get around.

I agree and hope is like you say, but since I'm in Puerto Rico where everything get implemented later much later than US, I will not rush to try to use it here and in my case root has much more value since I can assure you much like 90% of major retailers wont have trained personal or will know what samsung pay is.
He I first remembered when I try to use my chip card and the employee was like, How do I use this, when terminal clearly says on screen please insert chip.
Just curious if any T-Mobile guys have had any issues using this. Still have deep sleep? If it doesn't, and you flash stock recovery to fix it, will that trip knox? Any other issues this root method solves vs chainfires method that trips Knox? This may be a stupid question, but if you want to return to stock and unroot to get an OTA or whatever, flashing stock file from sammobile in Odin doesn't trip knox even though it rewrites the boot loader and installs the stock recovery? Thanks in advance

I can answer one part of that question given I used this to root, I still have deep sleep. The only thing I did after rooting was wiping cache just in case I did have issues but I am unsure that was even needed.

If I root the S6 with the new tool, it won't trip Knox?
Once its rooted, would I be able to replace the lock screen with the one from stock android and replace the dialer with the google dialer? I love stock experience but I wanted a premium device so I went with the S6.
Thanks.

It *by itself* will NOT trip Knox.
Yes you can change the dialer and lockscreen but they may not work properly. Keep in mind that if you mess something up, the ONLY way to boot again will be an ODIN flash. It is dangerous to root and start playing with things and having the stock recovery. One mess-up and it is full factory reset for you

Is it safe? Or i have to flash the same rom i have then update from OTA?

You sure can, but you may have to use the CSC instead of the HOME_CSC to do it. I may be wrong but, trying to keep data intact from a rooted rom while going back to stock could prove to be problematic, many will say it's not even worth it.

Yup. Just keep in mind the OEM Waiting period, as it will trigger that.
