Sound effect stopped working - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just flashed my Z1 to 14.A.1.1.136 from 0.290.
Rooted and everything, I did play around with system files a bit (taken off permission from systemui overlay to merge HSPA indicator with the signal bar, shutter sound, etc.)
And all of the sudden, sound effect stopped working. I still can get access to the sound enhancement settings but ticking on and off with the settings wouldn't change any bit of the sound.
Yeah I can simply flash it back to 0.290 since I made the full backup but we all want to stick with the latest version eh?
Any help?

as far as i know
the effects ARE broken for externel speakers, but still working fine for headphones...

[Q] Headphone suddenly stopped working

Hello,
I am on Cognition 4.5.3 on Captivate. All of a sudden my headphone suddenly stopped working and music was being played from the handset speaker. As both headphone jack and headphone pin were clean and headphone was working on my laptop, I was sure that I have a software problem.
After trying out different settings, I reached Voodoo Control. I dont know what keys I pressed but I got the Voodoo icon in the Notification area on the top and an amplifier green bar responding to the volume keys. Now the sounds played through Headphone but the Voodoo icon was in the notification bar. (This never happened before. Headphone was working with out the Voodoo icon in Notification bar)
The Voodoo Control app details:v 2.1.1 (WM8994 v9)
All was working (with the new Voodoo icon in Notification bar) until I rebooted my phone and now the Voodoo icon is gone and I dont know how to bring it back. Headphone is not being recognized and music is being played from handset speaker as before. I searched for it on various voodoo threads but found nothing. I think its very basic but I dont know how to get to it. Do I need to reflash or get a certain setting? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Update: Upgraded to Cog 5 V1.0 and voila, headphones started working!

[Q] Bad sound quality (calls and music) with external speakers. You too?

Hello,
I am noticing problems in the sound of my Z1, mostly only with its external speaker (I mean, not when using headphones). So I am pretty sure it is not a software problems, or it should be through the headphones too.
I have played some songs to test it well, disabling all the clear audio, normalizations, jingles and bells. Also the eq disabled, xLoud disabled. All the sliders of the eq at min (-10). Then I have put the first slider (400hz) at 0, and moved it between 0 and +10, adding later also the 1khz one.
This way I was able to track the problem. Can you please confirm if you too, with some different songs, can hear from the speaker a somehow distorted cracking sound? You can play also with the volume, normalization and xLoud to make it more evident to your ears.
I also have noticed this problem using some free apps to make music. So I would like to invite you to try it too, with any app you may have to make music, or try the one I used, which is SphereTones. With this app I can clearly notice that the sound is perfect through the headphones, bad through the speaker.
Then I tried an app called Springs (if you search for it you find many and I cannot post link because this is my first post, so, well, it is an app whose name is simply "Springs", with a white icon with black spheres. Developer bérenger recoules, category "music & audio"). With this app the sound is very bad also through the headphones. The developer has got no idea why and the reviews are good so I am curious to discover with you if the problem is in every Z1.
I also have noticed that the quality of all possible audio recordings (audio notes with any note app, also the mini app of the Z1, and also the apps to make loops with your voice) is very bad.
And finally, the phone calls quality is not so good. In this case there is no difference between headphones of speaker, so I have no idea why.
I discovered that in the call settings there is an eq and setting it to smooth is a good idea, also by disabling the speaker voice enhancement the problem is reduced, but not completely. Basically, the sound is somehow buzzing/crackling/scratching.
So.
Do I have a faulty phone?
THANKS
Well mate you skip important part.
If you suspect it's software fault - could you tell us which firmware are you using?
Are you on 4.3 or 4.2.2?
I don't have that problems, I found XZ1 very good, clear and loud (I'm not even using my bluetooth handsfree anymore - in the car - I just flip to speaker and I hear other side loud and clear).
Also, even I'm not that much into music - I'm very satisfied with sound (YouTube or walkman)...
Sent from my Z1
Mine sounds fine too, back on 4.2 and still in 4.3
Sent from my C6906 using Tapatalk
Ah, right, sorry
So, 4.2.2, because the 4.3 is not yet available in Germany.
All the apps and system, all is updated to last version.
I did a factory reset and also a software repair with the pc companion, but nothing changes (apart the lost of time and some problems while recovering the backup, damn it..).
Ok, faulty phone then?
Did you try with this spheretones app? I am curios because with that app (which well, the only problem is that sometimes it is kind of difficult to create the sphere) the distortion is very clear, while with music it depends on the music, some make it more obvious...

Weird sound issue with ringtones and notification

Hi All,
My wife's i9305 has a really weird issue which goes like this:
Ringtones are silent - this includes when the phone is being called and selecting ringtones out of the menu
Notification sounds are silent - this includes messages received and selecting sounds manually
Youtube and other media apps work on loudspeaker without issue
Phone loudspeaker works
Normal UI clicks and sounds work fine. Includes the swipe to unlock and volume up and down beeps
I originally thought this was some kind of weird software issue as all the settings seemed fine and it was running an older version of CM10.
So I decided I'd completely nuke the phone and start from scratch with a new KK CM11 build - something I've done a thousand times before.
With the phone completely reset to default the issue is still apparent.
Without knowing too much about the hardware, is there perhaps a different speaker for the ringtones and notifications? If not, then this issue is pretty odd is it not?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated - at least before I attempt to order a replacement loudspeaker part.
Cheers,
Jordan.
*bump* - I take it that everyone is just as perplexed as I am then...
Update: Notification sounds do work OK - However when you select them manually they dont.

Audio effects missing after Marshmallow update and other musings

I seem to have lost the audio effects ability after the marshmallow update to my Moto X, I could access it under settings/ sound and notification. I then could mess around with graphic equalizers or used presets. Strangely the actual app still seems to be on the phone, I can see it if I go to settings/ apps. But I can't run it.
Also a few other things I've noticed since the marshmallow update :
1. The phone when it's unlocked after being in standby for a while has disconnected from WiFi and instead stays connected to 4g for a minute or so.
2. Do not disturb feature seems a bit hit or miss. My phone ran out of power last night and I charged it and switched it back on before I went to sleep. Even though I had a 'Do not disturb' rule setup (11pm to 7:00am), I got an email notification at 00:30 that woke me up!
Has anyone else got this issue? i.e can you still see Audio Effects in Settings/ Sound after the Android 6.0 update?
it's missing, buts when i open the equalizer option in Spotify show the equalization option of motorola :s
Weird. Its looks they've removed the launcher to it
Edit.
Managed to locate the Audio Effects:
You can get to it by going through Google Music an clicking Settings/ Equalizer

Viper mod audio sounds HORRIBLE after rooting with SamPWND!

I'm pretty frustrated trying to figure this out. I have rooted my US Verizon - variant of the Galaxy S8 (G950U) with SamPWND.
Step 1) After root, I tried installing Viper mod. In the past with other phones, I always just installed the ARISE sound AROMA 2.94 installer as it does a lot of the work for you like installing the audio effects conf file in the right folder (/system/vendor/etc). So I ran the installer, and on next reboot, noticed Spotify Eq was using Samsung's built in SoundAlive equalizer. I forgot to freeze it first but did it anyhow in Titanium. Now spotify is using Viper. Sound quality sounds like crap.
Step 2) Factory reset and start over, this time using the method mentioned in the SamPWND thread which can be found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/samsung-galaxy-s8-root-snapdragon-t3659305
- That thread points to this Viper install guide for the S8: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...laxy-s8-s8-t3596933/post72049061#post72049061
As the guide mentions, I followed the steps by first freezing SoundAlive, copying the zip's audio conf file to /system/vendor/etc, then installing viper apk. Since our bootloader is locked, as I expected, the step to install Magisk fails, so then I simply restarted and opened viper. Sound quality is still crap.
So in either case, I know that Spotify is now using Viper mod for sound eq. I even went into Samsung's audio settings in Settings and it gave me a popup to use viper. I can listen to bluetooth and while the song is playing, change the viper eq and here a difference.
I noticed by default, Viper comes with Dolby, which is ON. I always turn this to off and notice that the sound is better. Dolby seems to overload the sound for me (sounds overpowered and almost at times like it's cutting out). Still, I'm noticing that the bass is solid when mids/highs don't have much activity but gets distorted when guitar really kicks in. Mids sound muddied and tunnel - like . Highs are tinny.
Normally, Viper mod with stock eq settings with all my other phones *always* sounds better than stock. Even with the eq at default and turning off any gains or gain controls / volume normalization, sound quality is still poor.
On bluetooth (I'm using my Sennheiser momentum wireless which are upper tier), when turning off Dolby, Spotify's normalize volume setting, the quality is near where it should be. But, in my Audi with Android Auto over USB, sound continues to be really horrible...I think the bass in the car and larger speakers are pointing out the distortion more. I have to also manually set my volume before running it in the car or else the head unit sound level is too low and I have to blast the volume knob which makes it sound worse.
Any ideas? What am I missing and are you experiencing the same?
So I have a SM-G955U, and I just installed Viper4Arise. I used the latest ZIP from the official V4Arise thread and flashed it using FlashFire. Make sure to check mount /system read/write and leave reboot enabled.
Also, I used the installer to remove SoundAlive.

Thanks man.
I noticed dolby was on by default. Turned that off and also turned off normalize volume in spotify. Sound is a lot better and no longer over loaded, though I think it might need more tuning. Now I'm wondering if install method matters at all

Good to hear! Yea, I turned off volume normalization as well. I don't normally install Dolby, so I haven't had to do that one.

APK? I flashed this zip in the FlashFire "recovery" mode. I didn't have to install any APKs.

Yeah, there is a separate 18th thread with an install zip which contains the audio effects conf and viper apk inside

How are you testing sound quality? I'm fine with the sound over Bluetooth headphones (sennheiser momentum, pretty good ones). But in my Audi, over android auto using usb, the vocals are still a bit harsh. Sub is cleaner now after a ton of adjustments. Vocals still are harsh on the "s" sound. With my previous pixel phone in this car, sound was way better and didn't need so much work

You can open the status menu in the Viper4Arise app to see if it is processing, other than that, I am listening to it. I know what my Pixel sounded like with V4Ar, and it sounds the same to me. All that being said, I have to use BT to connect to the Sync in my Mustang since I only have Sync 2, which doesn't support Android Auto.
How does Android Auto work? Is the music playing from your phone, or is the car stereo controlling? I know you can connect an Android phone as a USB drive.

Yeah, processing wasn't the issue, and that's why I don't know if the install method matters. I definitely know it's doing something because I move the knobs with bluetooth stream and hear the sound act differently.
With Android Auto, I hook up my phone to the USB port built into the car. Then the phone says Android auto in black and white, and the car display shows the interface for music players, maps, etc.
When auto is up, I can't change the sound settings dynamically since the screen is black. I think if I open viper before the car and have the notification always show, I can load it...but then it's loading a separate instance of the app, not the main one.
I had to really change the bass settings on my phone *and* the car (normally don't have to) to make the bass not distort. The audi's stock sound is junk. I got a nice JL Audio amp installed and a 600W JL Audio woofer.
With the pixel, in the car, I had the bass dial in the audi set to one two notches above mid way and the treble down 4 notches. Now, with the rooted s8, I'm having to dial its bass setting down 2 notches from mid (instead of up) and instead turn up the bass knob on the JL Audio woofer just a hair. Anything else and it distorts.
Out of the box, the Pixel just sounded great to me. I don't know why the S8 is taking all this work. Even with my note 4, I didn't have this issue of having to tweak the hell out of it.
