hangouts - i think its completely out of theme, the way you have to swipe right to do anything is annoying, would be useful if they did an integrated data texting service, such as imessage. i do like the clean chat convo. doesnt show previews of messages.
8Sms, glitchy, colors are terrble, i can never send a video mms. lots of cool features though. factory icon, quick sms, meh, over all not bad.
chaton.... junk.
chomp sms - currently using. looks cool, colors are in consistent, allows themes, not the best options though. kinda buggy when multitasking like 8sm. icon is hideous. i like how it shows message previews in the notifications, i like that is uses iOS emoji by default.
GoSMS - something about it i couldnt stand when i used it on my SGS4 i cannot remember.
---
ive also tried a couple of apps on here.
what are you using for an SMS/MMS app, whats the best themed app to match holo?
Personally I've been using ChompSMS since I've had my Nexus and I tried EvolveSMS when it first came out and it was not bad. It's a little buggy but the dev is constantly updating it. I haven't tried it in a while though but it might be worth a shot. To be honest my favorite texting app was the stock on my old S3 with the TouchWiz features such as registering a number as spam. Just wish there was a way to get something like that on my N5.

I'm using and loving 8SMS for texting. The simple AOSP-style interface and quick speeds are perfect for me, and the added LED light control functions are a huge plus. It's true that it could use a bit of correction in terms of some of the colours but I can live with it. I used Hangouts before and liked the interface there but I got annoyed at being forced to use the service, and not having the option to send SMS by default.

Textra all the way. Love it.
I had to make it "resident" in AppOpps to stop it from going out of memory (after a long period the app reloading itself and not resuming where i left off)
GO sms with iphone 7 theme
I've been using Evolve. I liked the look and feel of it out of the gate. The swipe to conversation list is a bit clunky at times, but overall I love the look and feel. I did spend the extra .99 to "unlock" the theme part of the package which helped with the overall look of the app.
I didn't mind hangouts, I just didn't like that I couldn't change the theme without having to use a modded apk.
Been using Evolve for a few weeks, and haven't had any glaring issues or gripes. The UI is easy on the eyes, the archive feature is nice, and the add'l options are an added touch.

Hello SMS is pretty cool if you like a minimal interface (and white), supposedly they are coming out with a dark option, but they need to work out sending pictures a bit. I would like to know if there is anything that can automatically resize/compress pics and video like ios does, just switched my wife from iphone and this is one of her gripes....

Thanks to Product F(RED), I have found my favorite texting app. GoSMS! You might have heard of it, you might have not, but so far it is 5x better than Handcent and 100x better than the Android SMS Default. Let us know if you use this app, and what you think of it here! Have a great weekend!
I love gosms. I've tried to settle for others and even for the stock messaging app but the themes are awesome. And the widget is cute also.

I liked it, but saw no reason for me to switch from my default which is smooth, clean, good-looking and straight-forward. But, yeah definitely a lot better than the alternative ones (handcent etc...).

Could you tell us Handcent-users what Go-SMS actually does better than Handcent? I don't see a big difference.
I use GoSMS to and i like the app.
I tried some other before like handcent sms but GoSMS is my favorite.
Handcent SMS causes some big lags for me. Furthermore there were some errors in displaying some MMS. When i tried GoSMS this bugs did not appear.
Great APP but there is a problem with it. if an SMS comes in and the popup windows comes on and you are not near the phone and the screen turns off, the popup goes away (as it should) BUT so does the SMS notification and the SMS is marked as READ. this means the reminder function of the program does not work.
How do I resolve this? Im on the EVO4G

For starters; GO SMS, unlike Handcent, doesn't look like a giant pile of sh*t being rendered onto your Android screen.

1. Even if you have unlimited SMS, it's still far far inferior to e.g. Whatsapp. Just the fact that you can't have group-conversations is enough... when you go on holiday or meet with a group somewhere... it's just so much more convenient. Not to mention sending images, location, videos...
2. In my country, when you have coverage, you have 2G/GRPS also. It's enough to use Whatsapp.
3. Everyone here has Whatsapp... and i mean everyone. In fact providers had to completely change their plans because nobody was texting anymore.

All your friends may be up with technology and have a phone that's capable of using messengers, but don't assume that is the case for everyone. SMS can be sent/received by feature/dumb phones that many of my older relatives and friends still use, therefore they are still useful for ME.
Anyway, I don't understand why you're in here arguing about the way other people use their own phones. Mind your own business!

Android 4.1 is missing the simple code to oranize group message. If Sony is using the stock messenger with a skin then you have to use another messaging application. This feature was added to Android in 4.2.

For now, stock app until I find something I like better.
I was using Textra on my S3 but it didn't want to work well with kitkat so I went to hangouts. I think hangouts could be a really good app, but right now its terrible in the way its organized. Contacts are a mess to sort through, and every google account you have has the ability to send messages which makes things very difficult to manage if you end up sending messages from more than one.
I'm not a huge fan of the stock app...kind of ugly, but it works well.
I use Textra and I love it.
Thanks for the info. I will try out those. I liked the stock app but was getting lag using it. It want bad but bad enough to drive me nuts. Lol

I really liked the stock app until I imported all of my old texts from my I7777 and then the lag was unbearable. Nearly a 2 minute wait. Now I'm using Hangouts. Not as many features, but no lag.
Textra
EvovleSMS (this is the one I use)
HelloSMS
I tried all the popular ones...Go SMS, Textra, hello SMS, Hangouts, Evolve, etc. Hated all of them. I ended up sticking with chomp SMS. It's from the same developer that made biteSMS for the jailbroken iPhone, so I'm familiar with it. Plus, you can customize the theme to your liking. It has all the popular features: popups, quick reply/compose, delay sending, scheduled sending, privacy, etc.
Ever since my SGS 2, I always end up back with Textra. Black theme. Light, fast, actively developed and has all the necessary features. It's not overblown and just does it's job well.
I've been using Chomp for a long time and have been very happy with it. I've been trying out the stock messaging app for a few days, compared to past Samsung messaging apps, I'm impressed, but I'll probably be installing Chomp again soon...
Are there any messaging apps or themes for a messaging app that would make it flat? No matter how much I edit Chomp or Textra it just still doesn't look flat.

I use hangouts as my stock mainly because I can directly chat with my Google contacts. I never liked textra, chomp, or handcent.

using stock messaging app here , rooted with twrp recovery , I have popup enabled when I get a msg and phone is locked (swipe to unlock set) I click the msg but then the phone lags at the lock screen ,and hangs. anyone else having problems with this ? or know a way to correct it ?
to get out of it I have to swipe to unlock then open up the messaging app it wont let me click the msg I got from the lock screen .
Was using ChompSMS but was getting a bit slow, switched to EvolveSMS but it's still really buggy, using Textra now. Slim, fast, quick reply / compose and not bogged down with tons of settings. Simple theme & emoji setup too. Be sure to download Textra emojis from app store.
since we are discussing the messaging apps, has anyone been getting random message alerts on old messages in the stock app? Phone was sitting on the counter last night charging and I heard it go off. Came out to find an alert for a message from tuesday that had already been read. Had this happen once before as well...alert on a previous read message. Never seen anything like it
From the sound of your needs, it seems like the stock app would suit your needs best. Why not use it? I don't really understand why some people seem to force themselves to use third party apps if the native ones work fine. :what:

Only had the phone a weekend, so take this with a grain of salt. . .
Started stock obviously, but I got sick of Touchwiz on day 1 so switched to the Google Launcher.
When I did that, Google tries to take everything, (msg app included) so I started using Hangouts.
It is horrible. Really bad. The basic functionality is OK, but it is the other garbage that they stick in the way that annoys so much.
Sure- I could send this message using G+, but why would I, and now you've made me waste time telling you that.

Galaxy S does that by defaut (excepted led color + flash rates) since S3 i think (i was using Light Flow for that back then).
Yes, i'm using defaut app, best to keep things simple imo.

hahahah awesome bro!
Another Google flop.
Why is it so....lacking?! Even reply from the notification is limited to the quick replies from allo. Google made replies from notification along with this app and Nougat, but didnt implement it correctly? This is a stripped down hangouts. Can't even use it for SMS. it just doesnt make any sense.....uninstalled in 15 minutes. Will reconsider if some minor, yet crucial tweaks are made.
With no sms integration. This isnt going to last very long. The fact that you can't have it like hangouts where it's both an sms and instant messaging is going to kill it. I hate. No loathe the fact that now I have to have yet another app for instant messaging and a separate app for sms
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Another useless google attempt. I don't use any google product if there is a good alternative. This company has so much user info it's scary.
Absolutely pointless! Uninstalled
If they add a web interface, it will replace Hangouts/SMS with those close to me very quickly because of the SMS fallback. But without a way to use it on other devices, I have no use for it.
This app is completely pointless. I don't care how pretty it is.
Whenever I sit and try my best to like an app, its usually gone for me in a day. The assistant is interesting, so maybe thats worth working with, but I will stick to my messaging app. I use pushbullet on my laptop so I can send/receive sms, still works well.
I really want to like it but if it can't be set as default SMS, doesn't auto backup my SMS, has no desktop client, doesn't import all my current messaging history I can't see myself using it. From the gripes I'm seeing around comment sections I know many feel the same.
I enjoy it for what it's worth, an IM client. Most of my friends and family are using it now so getting the most of it. Admittedly though, if your circle isn't into it becomes useless. The sms integration (?) is bizarre to say the least

I was ery excited about this because i thought it was gonna be on par with imessage (before iOS10) But i was extremely disappointed to see the horrible SMS integration. Sure i can probably convince 2-3 of my friends to use it But i dont want to have to remember who has it and who does not.
Correct me if im wrong but i believe that during the demo at Google IO that they said for peope who do not have it it would post your google assistant stuff via MMS so that the people who your SMSing would see it.
I like it but with iMessage iOS10 update and the lack of SMS its really dumb.
