Hi!
If you look at the nexus logo on the back cover, you will notice that there is some sort of shiny material inside it. This material is glued on inside the letters. Seems like this was some very cheap glue, because Ive lost all mine. This is gonna happend with my friends phone aswell, as he noticed recently that his letters are "jiggly", and prone to fall out soon.
Ive contacted LG in Scandinavia, and they confirmed that this was something they where not aware off, and most likely is not a production error, and therefor not covered by the warrenty. This baffels me, because there was some media coverage about this problem shorty after the nexus 5 was launched. But I cant find any recent articels on the subject.
I feel like it's not worth sending the phone to LGs repair station, because they will most likely just send it back to me, with a message that it's not theyre fault, and charge me for the device check.
Would be nice if they could atleast send me a new back cover...
Anyway, I suspect that the reason that the glue lost its hold, might be because of the wireless charger. I got one about a month ago, and the problem started shorty thereafter. Is LG producing the OEM nexus charger aswell? Could they just blame it on the use of "unofficial" LG charger?
Anyone else lost the letters, or havent noticed it yet? When the letters are gone the letters are just like the rest of the back cover. AKA not shiny.
Cheers!
Honestly I didn't even notice they were shiny lol. I just checked and mine are fine, but then again I bought a case for the N5 before I had the N5. It's been in it since day 1. Still perfect tho.
I also noticed, that one of my letters remained on the wireless charger. But I lost all of them now, and only the second one was on the wireless charger. I barely even notice that the letters are a bit less shiny now, so to me this would not be worth the fuzz
I had this happen a month or so ago and just decided to pick them all out. In case some of you don't realize.. There is a tiny bit of adhesive left behind after the shiny part of the stickers fall out. The leftover adhesive strips can easily be removed using an xacto knife or even a toothpick. IMHO it looks better without the glossy letters.
Its possible that steam from a hot shower can cause the glue to weaken and the letters to fall off.
On another note I always take my phone in the bathroom with me when I shower and it gets pretty steamy in there but my letters are still intact.
Eventually I won't be so lucky.

I put on a Seidio Surface case first day holding those letters on. Using wireless charger with the case there is no magnetic hold but Seidio prop on back of case butts to the bottom of Google charger and charges through the case fine.
Wish mine would fall out. I'd like to fill with black fill.
All the other grumbles, noisy switch, dull screen, etal I don't suffer from. I've never had trouble with any Nexus phone, from the 1/5.They all work most have cm11,except the later. It's a legacy platform, IMO.

Some of us get real important phone calls that we just can't miss, also some people shower and listen to music on their phone.
Edit: A nosey girlfriend or wife can also be a good reason to shower with the phone next to you.

Hey,
I'm having the same problem and I have contacted Google directly.
They will send me a new phone, they just want a photo of your back, and you could maybe give them links to other photos, so they can See that you are not alone with this problem.
Same as Scr!pt0, I contacted Google five months after my original purchase as the letters were falling off and they replaced it (no photos or proof of any kind required). Personally I think it was a heat related issue due to the wireless charger.
I heard they are ceramic! True?

Hey I have a Black Nexus 5. A piece has fallen of the X and one piece of the U. I'm thinking of taking all of them off too. How easy is it and did you have to wipe of any excess adhesive??
I lost my X, one part of it, i took out all of them
I have this problem as well. Not sure if Google in the Netherlands would replace my device...

Well when my letter started coming off, I just pulled it off easily. But the other letters wasn't as easy to get off.
Id suggest you get a blow dryer and heat the back for a fee seconds. This helps the adhesive soften up. The next thing you need is to get a small pin. And simply nick off the edges of any letter. Once its coming off, simply peel it off.
Sometimes the glue inside stays put, it is important to get it off as it gets sticky and attracts dust. So using the same pin just nick off the glue and you can peel that off too.
Its not a hard process and its not panic worthy, on the plus side. The letters blend in with the matt-coloured finish on the back. Looks neat and clean .

was leaving for work this morning, didn't want to toss my tablet on the passenger seat to be careful (go figure), so i put it on the roof of my car while i was loading up my stuff for work.
i get in my car, back out of my driveway, and pull off. i live on a busy road, 5 lanes, 55mph speed limit. i start accelerating, going about 40-45 mph, and i head a loud clank from my car. i look in my rear-view mirror and see something black bounce and roll around on the road. then it hits me, i never took my tablet off my roof... there it was, sitting in the middle of the road.
i turn around, wait for some traffic to pass, and run out and grab it. luckily, it still works, seemingly perfect. at first look, i didn't see anything wrong with it, but i couldn't take a good look at it until i got to work.
when i got to work, i noticed the top right corner was scraped and scuffed pretty good, and the corner on my leather case was a bit torn up, but it seems to be just a bit of cosmetic damage. i'm just thankful it still works. this is my 2nd tablet after the 1st was returned for a raised screen and defective touchscreen.

The part that gets me is that you didn't want to put it in your car for safety, so you put it on the roof of your car haha. That's hilarious. But man that sucks. I can't imagine they're going to give you a replacement, no.
Ouch! That sucks man, glad it still works though. I doubt you'll get a replacement, but if it were me, I'd get a different case to cover that up.

:highfive: thats for sure. I have a nexus S and I dropped mines pretty good the first few days I got it and all it got was small scratch on the top left corner and it works perfect still. I will always trust google products and their build quality. and plus, it's asus for **** sakes. my computer monitor is asus and so is my motherboard... Yeah I'll probably do that. Any suggestions for a case that covers the corners? A magnet case would be preferred but not required

There was a thread on here early on about someone who dropped their N7 and cracked the plastic bezel on one of the corners. They tried to fill in the missing piece with some silver colored resin. You may want to give that a shot.
A tpu case would cover the corners. Amazon has a few from different manufacturers. I just bought one from "exact". It has an "x" on the back, it's black but they also have clear, the back is textured, and best of all its $5.95 shipped. I-blason also makes a tpu as does kayscase. Look on Amazon for "Nexus 7 tpu".
Here is the link to the one I bought.

Yea I would second a TPU case to cover it up.
Also someone was piecing out his N7 for parts, perhaps you could buy the silver ring. It looks really bad in the pictures, but comparing to mine, it probably isn't even that big of a blemish.
They are pretty tough with those cases on. I'm using a Blurex case and I'm always tossing mine around now (in seats, the couch, desk, bed, etc). I'd be super glad it just works after that kind of spill. You can tell you were going pretty fast by the amount of chunk that is missing.
I've done stuff like that before, usually with my coffee mug, put it on the roof while I'm putting stuff in my jeep... Next thing I know I see coffee running down the windshield... lol
Glad your tablet still works, I'd be freaking out if that happened.
Ouch, good thing it still works and the glass isnt cracked, thank god I always have my tab in a bag of some sorts when I'm on the road.

After seeing two threads about painting the back of the N7, I decided I wanted to try some Plasti-Dip on my N7.
The Plasti-Dip came today, and I already had a green spraypaint I wanted to use on top of it (MTN Alien Mescalito Green).
So I decided I would test it out on cardboard first:
{

}
From left to right:
1. Plasti-dip, waited for it to dry, then applied spray paint on top
2. Plasti-dip, only waited for about 2 minutes, then applied spray paint.
3. Plasti-dip alone (yea it has some over spray on it)
Method 1 was just to make sure the Plasti-Dip is still easily removable with spray paint on top of it.
Method 2 was to see if I could save time by not having to remask after the Plasti-Dip dried.
Method 3 was just to test Plasti-Dip alone.
Eh so far so good. I proceeded to remove the back cover. Removed the buttons and the speaker grille as well:
Turns out the speaker grill is held on by three bits of melted plastic on the ends, the two visible pieces of tape, and some double sided tape:
Masked off a test area on my N7:
It turned out pretty nasty...
Dont mind the edges on the Plasti-Dip on that last picture. Its because I rushed to remove the masking tape after I saw the over spray seeping through the paper and lifting the masking tape (it seeped through the tape and ate the adhesive possibly?)
So yea, I heard Plasti-Dip is pretty porous when dry, its meant to create a grippy surface after all. But damn, I was hoping the "pores" wouldn't be so visible. Or I was hoping at least the pores would look more uniform. And no, letting it dry more wont make it better, it looked best when first applied ):
Good news is it all came off easily, left no marks behind. Speaker grill reattached easily as well. I just stuck it back on with the existing tape.
What next?
I'm wondering if I want to go through with it anyway. Going to find a piece of plastic I can test on. The cardboard was a good test to see how easily removable the paint is even on such a porous original surface, but I dont think its a good representation of how good it will look in the end.
I may also just wait for spare parts to be available and grab a back cover to paint with spray paint only, no Plasti-Dip.
All in all, this experiment cost me around $18. Plasti-Dip was $13 after shipping (local stores only had black) and the Alien paint was $5.
Was looking forward to seeing more pictures on the thread. I've worked with plastidip a lot on cars and random items and its great stuff. I like how if you don't like it it can easily be pulled off. The trick however is using a lot of small coats that add up which will make it thicker and easier to peel off or just thicker to get it to the consistency you're looking for.
Yea sorry to dissapoint haha.
This being my first try on the N7, I wanted to make sure the Plasti-Dip doesnt damage the rubbery finish of our N7s.
May try again this coming week, larger area, more drying time and more layers. To see if the porous texture improves.
Also, the Plasti-Dip peeled off VERY easily from the N7's back. And this is with me prepping the surface by cleaning it.
I have done plastic dip on car parts but no way I will put it on the back of the Nexus 7. It will make the tablet look cheap up close and it gets dirty easily.

Thats the beauty of plasdip always can go back to the original post up some pics if you give it a second shot!
Is the whole reason for this so you can paint it that terrible green colour? I don't get the point here.... N7 already has a really nice grippy and nice feeling back on it.
Now if it were a slick-as-glass polished plastic, I'd understand wanting to make it more grippy..
Yea the point was so I could paint it any color I want and revert back to original without any damage
The green IS deeper than I expected it to be though. Was looking for more of a light mint green color.
Double post.

Its not that bad. The outer coating which is the "leather like" feel is stained in some areas and peeled off in others. I tried to clean the stains and pulled the soft plastic coating off. It isn't very noticeable but you can feel the difference.

It's basically a substance you can use to dip a material into that covers it in a sort of easily removable coating. Take a look at it on YouTube, it's pretty neat.
Do at least 3 coats I've plasti-dipped a few things.

hello,
so last night i just noticed that something was wrong with my jack
left side was louder than the right
i tried alot of things
and finally went to LG service
and they opened my phone up
and saw there was small fungus on the motherboard
even though i bought my phone on 10th dec 2013
and used a cover all along "THE ARMOR CASE!"
it still managed to happen i wonder why
i did get my board replaced though
it was giving me camera crashing and heating problems as well
but this makes me wonder how can fungus pop up on my motherboard so fast.
Moisture attracts fungi... Make sure you keep the phone away from water and let it not get damped...

If you shower with your phone next to you it can be possible that the steam from a hot shower can cause fungus to grow.
Also I noticed that you said the left side is louder than the right. I'm assuming that you're talking about the speaker? The speaker is only located on the left side and the right side is for the mic.

I think you should run with it and see what you can harvest down the line. Might be worth more than the phone itself.
I personally don't submerge my electronic devices in water, so am not really that concerned with my S5 being water proof or not. If you're like me ,you may want to remove that flappy charging port cover, as it's a bit of a pain opening and closing it all the time. One way is to simply cut it off (and then have a loose bit of plastic rattling around inside your S5), or you could remove it safely and store it somewhere so that you can put it back if you ever want to sell / trade in the phone.
It's simple enough to do -
- Open the flappy cover on the charging port
- Remove the back cover of your phone
- With the phone face down (on a soft lint-free cloth, to protect the screen), locate the screw directly to the left of the charging port
- Remove this screw
- Carefully lift up the plastic cover the screw was holding in place (don't lift it all the way off, just enough for next step)
- Lift out the flappy cover
- Replace the plastic cover and the screw
- Replace the back cover
- Keep the flappy cover in a safe place so you can put it back later if you need to
- Done
Pictures -
Shows which screw and cover to remove -

Shows my S5 without the flappy cover
A simple enough process, and sorry if someone already posted something similar (I did a search and found nothing specific).
And for those that need to watch someone else do it, a video -
Hit thanks if you find this useful :fingers-crossed:
I too find the cover annoying but I have a 2 year old that throws phones in the toilet (I'm not kidding). Either way, good tutorial.
It's good to know. I wanted a waterproof or resistant phone more for been in a damp pocket or using while in the rain..... So may do this if it gets amnoying

Going to do this. I found the cover a real pain.
or you could just wait until it snaps off on it's own. Wonder if Samsung will replace these under warranty when they do break off.
Samsung considers it as cosmetic wear and tear > no warrenty coverage

Considering it stops the waterproof functionality I would argue that it is not just "cosmetic wear and tear"

Be careful, there might be water sensors inside the port similar with my Xperia Z and could potentially void warranty.
Now if only there was a way to get rid of that stupid warning about the charging flap every time you unplug it.....

- Keep the flappy cover in a safe place so you can put it back later if you need to
- Done

There is a rom that removes those notifications. Using Phoenix rom.

I just removed the flap using the instructions. I thought I was the only one annoyed by this. Thanks for the write up!
Took mine off this morning. In and out of car all day. Between case and fat fingers, just too hard to open and close flap. I usually just left it dangling and dangling is no way to go through life.

Mayeb a late reply to you. But if you root your phone and install Xposed Framework together with my module (http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.gertlily.xposed.touchwiz) you can disable the popup for the usb and the battery.
People, know if there are any video on YouTube showing how it's done? In my opinion is the only negative point. Can cause problems if you take? (Not talking about the situation ceases to be water resistant there ...)

Kinda regret not getting a case now. Luckily everything still works, apart from an annoying buzzing when speaking on the phone. But my perfectionist OCD is kinda kicking in now!
Thinking about putting up with it until a new phone takes my fancy.
Anyone else had shatter experience? What did you do?
Sorry
Mods delete this, didn't realise there was a thread already.
i got one of those as well, two weeks ago. everything still works perfectly though. i still wont use a case or screen peotection.

Spiderman App xD
I bought an N5 off CL for $100 with a cracked screen and I've been looking to replace it. Appears to be pretty easy, but the new screen is going to run you about $100. I recommend getting a screen with the bezel instead of just the screen.

I second that. Cases are always ugly anyway. I'm careful enough with my phone that I don't really worry about it. Going on 8mo+ and haven't dropped it once yet...
At least the way I see it is like this: you get a case in order to keep the phone looking good and protected, but you never get to see what the phone looks like when there is a case around it, so what's the point of the case? haha

It's not always about looks. Some people need their phone to always be working and keeping it protected ensures that.

ive never used a case on any of my devices(since g1 days, and every nexus since). i did buy a case for my n4. i put it on and immediately took it off. i hate how they feel in the hand, it really bugs me. naked is still the way to go for me. and ive dropped my phones many times, but this was the first time in all those years that my screen actually broke. what sucks is that it was all my fault. i had it in my lap(sitting on a bench at night), then stood up forgetting it was there. face down on the concrete it went. by now though, i forget that it did break. its in such a place that doesnt bug me, and the cracks arent visable with the screen on.
I have 2 mains cracks on the top and bottom. Plus a spider crack on the right side. Luckily its a tempered glass screen protector. I'll agree with Simms that I hate the feel of a case, for the most part, but I refuse to go anywhere without one. You can't predict life. Back when I got a shiny new GNex, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident which resulted in the phone getting chucked from the front of the car, out the passenger window and right into a cement divider. I spent like 10 minutes in the car looking for it before I decided to go find a house to call 911 when I saw it. It was wearing an Otterbox commuter case and it survived for the most part, minus the screen.
IDK, I bought my phone from T-Mobile on a payment plan. Technically speaking, I don't even fully own my N5 yet. So I'm not going to let anything happen to it. When I'm in my home I keep it in my Ringke Fusion case. It's a little lighter so it's okay for just in house for a drop if I'm careless. When I go out though, I put it in my Neo Hybrid case. I have the Nillkin 9H anti explosion tempered glass screen protector on at all times. I actually owned the protectors and cases before my N5 came in. My phone hasn't been naked since I got it, really. Got a spare glass screen protector as well. Once this one gets too cracked to offer any real protection it'll get replaced, but for now the cracks are minimal. When I retire my Nexus 5 it will be in as good condition as when I got it (if I have anything to say about it).
Cracked screens annoy the piss out of me. I use a thick ass battery case(zerolemon) not a big fan of this brick but its quite nice having ability to charge phone especially since N5 has a mediocre battery

The ol' "forgot I set it down on my lap and stood up" situation. I see this happening to people on almost a daily basis stepping out of their cars. There's also the "random stranger bumping the phone out of your hand" which can be quite unexpected.
Every time I drop my phone even with a case or not, I have a mini heart attack. I know my case will protect it and I know that the Nexus 5 has a durable screen and needs a pretty hard fall to break but it's that 000.1 percent chance that I'll pick it up after a nasty fall one day and have a small crack.
Seeing a stupid comment on Google Play about an app you love and marking it as "spam". You've done it too.
My screen broke about 2 weeks ago... very upsetting. I thought about getting a screen and doing the job myself, but I figured it would be best, for me, to have LG do it.
Unfortunately, they are rather slow. They got it one week ago today, and it's not expected to be delivered to my house until Tuesday. So a total of 14 days since I mailed it back to them.
Just keep that in mind if you plan to have them fix it... The only phone I had from before is an old flip phone.. which works, but very, very limiting compared to a N5. lol
OP, I feel for ya. If that happened to me; I would have a bad day too!
However, there is a thread dedicated to people having bad days here: Post your broken Nexus 5 thread
Feel free to drown in your sorrow with the other unfortunate members.
