Franco Color Controls Learning Thread - Nexus 5 General

Franco failed to include instructions on how to use his color control editor. This thread is so that we can post our collective knowledge — learned through trial and error — and compile proper instructions.
I've figured out what each control SEEMS to do, but I must be missing a lot because the positives and negatives SEEM to do exactly the same thing, and all of the values across the board only affect highlights and high mids. Please help confirm this or else disprove it, and do what we can to figure out how to adjust the mids, low mids, and lowlights. Here's what I've got so far:
red curve positive
- starts at 0
> subtracts red (adds cyan) from highs
red curve negative
- starts at 0
> subtracts red (adds cyan) from highs
red brightness positive
- starts at 101
> affecting high mids, subtracts red (adds cyan) the closer a color is to high mids
< except high mids, subtracts red (adds cyan) the closer a color is to high mids
red brightness negative
- starts at 101
> affecting high mids, subtracts red (adds cyan) the closer a color is to high mids
< except high mids, subtracts red (adds cyan) the closer a color is to high mids
green curve positive
- starts at 71
> subtracts green (adds magenta) from highs
< adds green (subtracts magenta) to highs
green curve negative
- starts at 71
> subtracts green (adds magenta) from highs
< adds green (subtracts magenta) to highs
green brightness positive
- starts at 117
> affecting high mids, subtracts green (adds magenta) the closer a color is to high mids
< affecting high mids, adds green (subtracts magenta) the closer a color is to high mids
green brightness negative
- starts at 117
> affecting high mids, subtracts green (adds magenta) the closer a color is to high mids
< affecting high mids, adds green (subtracts magenta) the closer a color is to high mids
blue curve positive
- starts at 86
> subtracts blue (adds yellow) from highs
< adds blue (subtracts yellow) to highs
blue curve negative
- starts at 86
> subtracts blue (adds yellow) from highs
< adds blue (subtracts yellow) to highs
blue brightness positive
- starts at 121
> affecting high mids, subtracts blue (adds yellow) the closer a color is to high mids
< affecting high mids, adds blue (subtracts yellow) the closer a color is to high mids
blue brightness negative
- starts at 121
> affecting high mids, subtracts blue (adds yellow) the closer a color is to high mids
< affecting high mids, adds blue (subtracts yellow) the closer a color is to high mids
white point brightness
- starts at 32
> expands highs (increases black/white contrast while reducing color contrast, and increases brightness), adds cyan to highs
< shrinks highs (decreases black/white contrast while increasing color contrast, and reduces brightness), adds red to highs

I doubt he "failed" to do anything. He isn't obliged to document anything he creates.

That's the most off-topic troll comment anyone could possibly have made here. Go away.
You misunderstand. I'm not implying that he tried and was unable to provide instructions. I'm not even judging his character and saying that he could have done better, or that he should have — for the record, it's my belief that he should include instructions, but that's utterly irrelevant and off topic, and that wasn't how I framed the OP. I was pointing out that because he didn't include instructions, we should work together to pick up the slack. If you follow his efforts, it's obvious that he wants to bring color control to the general population of nexus enthusiasts, but obviously most of us who are interested in fixing our colors will have no clue what those settings do, no less an idea about how to set about learning what they do. He developed the tool, now we can combine our collective trial and error and compile the proper instructions. If you'll notice, even in his market app he provided some (vague) instructions — I have no clue why the app once downloaded is completely different than the one pictured in the store, or why it went from having vague instructions to having no instructions, but neither do I feel that a discussion about that is relevant to this thread.
Otherwise, if you're interested in contributing then your data is welcome.

and most of them are not very good, so I had to made my own, because all my pictures I made with my DSLR and edited on calibrated screens looked bad on my replacement N5.
This I needed to do try out the Franco CCs too because it is quite confusing what all the controls do, as OP said. I can't contribute anything because I just did a trail and error job but am satisfied with the results now.
I didn't want to recalibrate the screen but my replacment N5 had a way to "warm" white balance,, my first one was near perfect, so I guess there is no way you can apply just a color profile, it may look totally different on another N5.

Thanks for this men, will try later.

[TOOL] Create your own circular battery icons with 1% increment

Hi!
This was inspired by KryptosXLayer2 for the BlueCircle battery icons, but I wanted to have my own icons, with the other colors and settings.
I too spent WAY too long working on this tool, but the end result is here for you to use and to judge. It's a Windows application, so I apologies to all Linux, Mac, etc. users.
With this tool you can create your custom circular battery icons by specifying the following parameters:
Icon size
Base icon transparency
Circle width and padding
Choice of built-in or custom charging icon
Choice of text of custom overlay for bad charge indication
Percentage text font
Varying of each element (circle, percentage text, charging icon, bad charge indication) based on percentage (this includes custom charging icons and bad charge indication too! - see below for more information on this)
Optional "fixed" colors for the circle
Gradual color changes between specified color levels
A few more minor things
This tool will also allow you to preview the icons based on the current settings using specified background. The actual icons that you save when you're done always have transparent backgrounds, but this will allow you to see how they blend with various backgrounds.
Here is how it looks like:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I tried to make the UI as intuitive as possible, but I would like to mention a few thing on usage:
1. Color levels:
For each element (circle, percentage text, charging icon, bad charge indication) you can specify up to 5 color levels based on percentage.
First select how many (1-5) color levels you want.
Then specify the cut-off percentage for each level.
Double click each percentage field to edit the color it represents.
The corresponding element will have the given color if the percentage is lower than the given color level.
If gradual colors are specified, then the color of the element will gradually move from one color to the other as percentage changes.
For circle element you can choose "fixed colors". This means that each portion of the circle that represents a percentage range will always have the color specified by the corresponding color level. Otherwise, the circle will have just one color, which will change based on percentage.
2. Custom icons:
You can use custom images for charging icon and bad charge indication. Supported formats: GIF, PNG (the ones that support alpha-channel).
One of the colors in this image will be designated as "key" color, which will vary based on percentage and color levels specified for this element.
This tool will try to auto-detect this "variable" color based on which color is more prevalent in the image, but you can correct this color by double-clicking "variable color" control (it will become visible only after you load your custom image).
Note, that for the purposes of variable color key, each pixel with the same RGB components will be treated as the same color regardless its transparency (alpha), but when this icon is rendered, the original transparency is preserved, while changing the color.
3. Preview panel:
If preview mode is set to "Auto" the preview panel will be updated automatically every time you make a change to any of the parameters, otherwise, click "Preview" to see your changes.
You can change preview percentage by entering 5 different percentage values.
I'm providing a few examples of the icon sets that can be generated using this tool:
1. Default (the way parameters are set when you launch the application):
Download
2. Blue circle, no fixed colors:
Download
3. Default, except for no gradual or fixed circle colors (my favorite):
Download
After you generated your custom icons, you can use them to mod your SystemUI,apk to replace the stock icons. There are many guides available that describe the process.
For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1814441

Looks great, good work and believe me, I sure know about how much time you spent doing this - at least twice as long as it took me to design the icons and lay those stupid things out right!
Congrats and I hope lots of people get use out of this if they want to see their icons in different variations!

Gallery viewer with pre-calibrated color & gamma corrections

The Nexus 6 has a great display but for viewing photos it is too unrealistically over-saturated.
For accurate color reproduction there's a new app "Calibrated photo Viewer" on Google Play with pre-calibrated color and gamma corrections to show photos in their natural colors.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.auralisoft.jpegviewer
Adobe RGB and sRGB color spaces are supported so both standard and professional photos can be viewed seamlessly, without the need to switch 'screen modes'.
The app works just like a normal photo viewer. No rooting is required.
Since ever display is different how exactly can it be calibrated? On a PC you need another device to actually read the colors then make a calibration based on the output
Sent from my Benzo'd Google N6 on VZ
There may be small variations between different nexus 6 devices but they all have similar characteristics. Calibration for one will also work well for others.
No there is a lot of variance, some people have made very large changes which is why every single kernel tool comes with the ability to do that .

You post something to share than you get negative responses. Xda is not what it used to be in the friendly department. Another problem for viewing anything is that everyone's eyes are different. Thanks for posting this.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Xparent Blue Tapatalk 2
I'm not being unfriendly I think we just have different definitions of what "calibrated" means. Unless you have a tool that measures it is not calibrated it is a "best guess" or "close enough" based off a fluctuating standard that comes out of the factory.
Everyone's eyes are different but white is white which is why you have a calibration tool that reads what pure white is ....same is true for the other colors.
Sent from my Benzo'd Google N6 on VZ
If you're interested in giving it a try to see how it performs on your Nexus 6, please do. There is a 2 hour refund window on Google Play (as with all apps).
In that case then I would argue that having a handful of adjustment parameters is not true calibration, given that there is a lot wrong with how the display performs out of the factory. There is an artificial shaping of the blue channel which can not be fixed via simple scaling or gamma adjustments. What I have done is a comprehensive modelling of the output of the device before it can be calibrated to match the standard sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces.
Added color balance controls
I have added controls for custom fine tuning of color balance, to allow for variations between different Nexus 6 devices.
Check out the new version with Auto Color Balance.
Use a camera on an external android device as a color measuring device.
No more fiddling with color controls.
The two devices communicate via Bluetooth.

Requires a free companion app Camera Colorimeter on the external device

Just released a new version of the app with comprehensive Auto calibration (rather than a simpler color balance operation).
Uses a camera on an external android device as a color measuring device.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.auralisoft.jpegviewer&hl=en
Requires a free companion app Camera Colorimeter on the external device. Or install this app and use your Nexus 6 to calibrate other devices.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.auralisoft.colorimeter&hl=en
There is also a free demo version of Calibrated Photo Viewer. It has full calibration functionality of the paid version so you can see for yourself the calibration results.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.auralisoft.jpegviewerdemo&hl=en
I hate when people post ads, it ruins XDA.
Please don't look at this as an ad.
Display calibration is very much a topic of interest on XDA, and this is the only app of its kind around.
Being able to use your phone for color measurement and calibration is quite a neat trick IMHO.

Introduction
Materialize Theme is a theme for AROMA Installer. Inspired by sir Daniiiik49's Material theme and based on the MIUI 4 ICS theme. It applies the Material Design concept to give you a whole new look n' feel It also includes the most common Material Design Icons for you to just choose whichever icon you prefer to use.
NOTE: Currently supports small screen devices, cause Buttons, Icons and other parts of the theme appears small on a larger screen device (see the screenshots below). Sorry for inconvenience.

Customization
I've now moved and updated the source files to a new repository. Here if you want to customize your own theme, click the button below for some basic useful info you may want to know first
Colors
All colors I've used here are from the Color Style guideline. Just choose your primary (500) theme color and you're good to go. The rest of the colors are defaults from the MIUI 4 ICS theme and were already set in the source files, so no need to worry bout it.
First thing is replacing some values of the theme's properties. Open up the file theme.prop, replace the HEX color code values of the following theme properties listed below with your preferred color.
Code:
[FONT="Courier New"]color.selectbg = #RRGGBB
color.selectbg_g = #RRGGBB
color.titlebg = #RRGGBB
color.titlebg_g = #RRGGBB
color.dlgtitlebg = #RRGGBB
color.dlgtitlebg_g = #RRGGBB
color.scrollbar = #RRGGBB
color.progressglow = #RRGGBB[/FONT]
Brief description about the properties; color.selectbg and color.selectbg_g for item selection (e.g Selecting an item in selectbox), color.titlebg and color.titlebg_g for the Titlebar text color, color.dlgtitlebg and color.dlgtitlebg_g for the Dialog's Titlebar text color, color.scrollbar is basically for the Scrollbar, and color.progressglow for the animating gradient color of Progress bar.
Background, Navbar, Dialog & Titlebar
The colors used in Background, Navbar and Dialog can also be found in the Color Style guideline under Themes. Background color is Grey 50 (#FAFAFA), the color of the Navbar is actually the App bar color which is Grey 100 (#F5F5F5), Dialog background color is White (#FFFFFF). And the color for Titlebar, as well as for Dialog's Titlebar will be the primary theme color.
Select Image
The Select image can be seen in the item selection (e.g When pressing an item in menubox). There isn't much use of this one so I just make it totally transparent.
Progress Bar
The Progress bar has two segment, one is the empty Progress bar and the other one is the fill Progress bar. Color used for the empty Progress bar is Grey 300 (#E0E0E0) and for the fill Progress bar is the theme's primary color. Additionally, to change the animating gradient color, just replace the value of the property color.progressglow in the theme.prop file.
Buttons
Here I've implemented the Raised Button which at first is just a classic button, then will raise once it's pressed. The following order of theme properties below will show this implementation.
Code:
[FONT="Courier New"]img.button = button.9
img.button.focus = button_primary.9
img.button.push = button_primary_raised.9[/FONT]
Brief description about the properties; img.button is the classic or let's say the default button, img.button.focus is basically the focused button (not elevated/no drop shadow), and img.button.push is the pressed button (elevated/drop shadow on).
The color used for the default button is Grey 300 (#E0E0E0) and for the primary button is the theme's primary color.
Toggles
There are four states for the Checkbox and Radio button; OFF, ON, FOCUSED, and PRESSED states. Obviously, The OFF state is the unselected one, and of course, the ON state is the selected one. FOCUSED state is only applied to the unselected item where it's simply indicates that the item is just focused but not selected. PRESSED state is where the ripple-like effect is shown which indicates that the item is pressed, either it is selected or unselected.
The following order of theme properties below will show this implementation:
Code:
[FONT="Courier New"]# CHECKBOX
img.checkbox = checkbox
img.checkbox.focus = checkbox_focused
img.checkbox.push = checkbox_focused_ripple
img.checkbox.on = checkbox_on
img.checkbox.on.focus = checkbox_on
img.checkbox.on.push = checkbox_on_ripple
# RADIO BUTTON
img.radio = radio
img.radio.focus = radio_focused
img.radio.push = radio_focused_ripple
img.radio.on = radio_on
img.radio.on.focus = radio_on
img.radio.on.push = radio_on_ripple[/FONT]
Brief description about the properties; img.radio and img.checkbox for the unselected item, img.radio.focus and img.checkbox.focus for the focused unselected item, img.radio.push and img.checkbox.push for the pressed unselected item, img.radio.on and img.checkbox.on for the selected item, img.radio.on.focus and img.checkbox.on.focus for the focused selected item (here, FOCUSED state is not applied to selected item), img.radio.on.push and img.checkbox.on.push for the pressed selected item.
See the Selection Controls guideline for the color style.
NOTICE: Some of the image has a .9 at the end of their names (as seen in the file theme.prop). This is important so don't change it, unless you know what's its purpose.
Other References
The drop shadows I used here is the Polymer Paper Shadow. See this blog for details on how to apply these values in Photoshop.

How is your display black crush

How is your p20 pro amoled black crush/black smearing looks like?
To reproduce the black crush/black smearing problem, you can try in two ways:
Option A
1)Change the setting menu to dark background:
Setting -> battery -> darken interface colours
2)Turn your display to the dimmest ( lowest brightness level) in a low light or dark room
3) try to have some scrolling action on the darken setting menu
4) You should see the white menu sub text has some smearing effect
Option B
1) take a picture which has a lot of dark/black spot
2) Turn your display to the dimmest ( lowest brightness level) in a low light or dark room
4) in the gallery, scroll left and right of those pic
5) you should see the black smearing effects on the dark spot of the pic
I will try to get some video on.
Mines looks pretty serious imo so do the displayed phone from the retail shop.
Not sure which vendor Huawei is using for this amoled. But I can guess for sure it wasn't Samsung amoled
Video taken:
Pay attention to the black wire of the earphone. You can see that whenever you drag there is black trail or smearing effect following the black wire of the earphone
It is very noticeable if you use your phone in the dimmest level of display and in a dark room.
iPhone doesnt really captured the smearing effects much though.
Im not too sure about the smearing vs s9. But i saw that the s9 crushes the blacks, whilst the p20 doesn't.
On black level tests my p20 can see all squares. My sisters s9 shows the first 2 or 3 as pure black which is not the case.
@ Sc00p007 youre right.

Not sure if i'm getting old or i can't see this.
Since i'm not using my phone to grade photo's while sitting in a pitch black room i'm not really worried about this.
I'm certainly not going to take the effort to setup this artificial test. I have better things to do.
So far from I had observed the black smearing only happened on gallery app and setting menu (if you set it to darken interface)
Here is the video I took:

Okay I think I see what they mean. So it can really only be reproduced if
1. You turn the brightness slider down to zero.
2. You have black backgrounds enabled.
3. You scroll/drag VERY slowly.
The way to catch it is to
A. Do not lift your finger off the display when dragging the list in settings app. In super slow motion. Drag ever so slowly, like your stretching the writing on the display, and
B. Lock your eye on one same icon and see it fade colour or lose its brightness as you drag it or 'stretch it' with the same poised finger, without lifting from the display.
In other words, it is very difficult and unnatural to produce. But I can confirm it exists. I think it's a non issue for nearly everyone bar a very few people. I cannot reproduce it, for example in this dark themed official XDA app. Because the background is not true black and the text is white.

Lol if i have to go to these lengths to maybe see it then honestly? I don't care.
I think it's testament to this device if we have to look for problems like this.
I get it shouldn't happen, but i really wouldn't have noticed it without being advised.

Question Does flickering issue exist on everyone?

I read a comment on gsm arena that an owner experiences the flickering issue of the device at high brightness. Is it the same to other owners?
I have that too, and I've watched a review video where the same issue got mentioned.
The flickering is in most probability a software issue. I figured that it was due to the Auto color scheme in Settings > Display.
I would recommend changing the colour scheme to your preference under Settings > Display and disable auto Coloring.
Hope it helps!

Tried it , doesn't work seems to work. flickering still exits especially on nightmode, switching to 60hz somewhat reduces it significantly
Also is it just me or the grey background in nightmode of apps like chrome , playstore etc seems uneven (like a reddish tint is present) at places at low brightness. Also on video playback at lowest brightness the reddish tint is present. Can anyone confirm?
I had no flickering after disabling auto colour scheme so far (I've only used it for a couple of hours though and even with auto on it's not that frequent). I don't see a red tint in dark mode.

Correction: I've noticed a reddish tint in dark mode in Google Discover. It affects only the upper and bottom parts of the screen, the middle looks fine. In some other apps (like Gmail) it only appears at a very specific brightness setting. It's not visible under the lowest setting, but once I increase it a tiny bit the tint show, and with another tiny increase it disappears. Also, its only at 120Hz, when I switch to 60Hz it's fine.
This is called Pwm flickering or pulse width modulation, when brightness is lower then 60/65% flickering appear.. with every step in lowering brightness flickering increasing. Dc dimming is only solution to prevent screen to flicker.
I haven't noticed any flickering on my Note 10 Pro, not even on 120Hz and low brightness. I did notice the uneven colors on top and bottom parts of the screen, on lowest brightness there is a strong reddish tint if using 120Hz, as I showed in another post:

and on all other brightness it's still present but not as strong and it's greenish instead of reddish. It becomes less noticeable the higher the brightness but it still makes the whole screen look greenish.

Yes the greenish tint is present in majority of apps . It reduces to an extend by disabling "adjust text and background automatically" in dark mode settings.
And for the Flickering , perhaps try playing any videos on chrome browser at 120hz at low brightness.It flickers like crazy for me

Now I do see the flickering, but only if I watch youtube on chrome. The flickering is not present on the youtube app so maybe it can be fixed with a software update?
Thanks for the advice on the "adjust text and background automatically", it does improve the image at the minimun brightness (though it still looks quite bad on 120Hz...).
The thing that I actually found have helped more with the greenish tint is using the colors on "automatic" instead of Standard. I usually use standard because it's more faithful to the original colors and the automatic commonly gives a blueish tone but this blue tone masks the greenish tint, making it good enough at 60Hz that I don't notice it. On 120Hz it still looks too greenish at low brightness.
For me it only flickers when I change the screen orientation or pause/play the video, never during (in Chrome). Regarding the green tint, I agree that the automatic colour scheme makes it better, but actually enabling, not disabling, the "adjust text and background automatically" reduces the tint even more for me (it's actually more helpful than going from automatic to standard colour scheme). I do think it's mostly a software issue.
I didn't notice any flickering or color shifts so far.
120 Hz
Color scheme: Standard (custom)
Dark mode (adjust text and background automatically enabled)
Reading mode disabled
No flickering when viewing youtube on the Duckduckgo browser even with low brightness. I don't use chrome

Download the app activity launcher and search for antiflicker mode. It's a hidden setting in miui for our device. See if it helps for you

Maybe it's fixed is 12.0.10. I am on 12.0.6
I was on 12.0.6 and 12.0.10 Global, and now on xiaomi.eu 12.0.6 and there's no difference.
