[Q] 4.4 Updating help from rooted 4.3 - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, so I'm on 4.3 10.4.B.0.569 and there is the 4.4 Kitkat update available (10.5.A.0.2300). It's a C6603 on Three UK (Cust num. 1270-6263). It is rooted via a Bootloader Unlock and has a CWM Based Custom Recovery installed. I cannot update via OTA since the stock recovery is gone, how do I flash back the stock recovery so I can do the OTA? I know it may be as simple as 'Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' but I don't have any IMG for it and can't find any. Any help? I don't want to factory reset and lose data, it'd be an effort to restore.

The Z doesn't have a stock recovery or even a recovery partition.
To update via OTA, you need to relock your bootloader. Make sure you flash a stock kernel before doing so.

Ah ok, well what's the best way to go from 4.3 Unlocked BL Rooted to 4.4 stock without losing data?

Probably just flash an FTF with Flashtool (choose one from the general section) without wiping data, then flash the latest advanced stock kernel and root again.

[Q] Problems with downloaded system update

I just got a notification that there was a system update for my phone. I'm running a rooted, but otherwise stock phone. When it downloads and reboots it goes to the recovery menu instead of updating. Is there something that I need to do to get this to install?

Do you have the stock recovery or is it custom. You have to be on stock ROM and stock Recovery in order to OTA. You may lose root, but being rooted will not affect the OTA installing.
Ah, that may be the problem. I have TWRP installed, so does that mean that I'll have to flash a rom that's been updated?
Thanks!

You have to flash stock recovery at least. Some people were having luck just flashing the stock recovery and some were having to relock the bootloader as well. I tried flashing the stock recovery and running the update but it failed. I don't really want to relock my bootloader and lose all my data when I unlock it again, so I'm holding off for now.

Flash the stock boot image also. I would bet you have the insecure boot image flashed

[Q] problem with kernel and recovery on xperia z

I unlock the bootloader on my xperia z and then I rooted newest firmware 10.3.1.A.0.244 by following the instructions from hire http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386405 . And everything worked as it should. Than I instal recovery and android 4.3 from hire http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354328 . Then the problems started, I tried to install app via recovery, but android did not want to boot. I decided to go back to 4.2 with 10.3.1.A.0.244 kernel, but it was no longer possible to root the phone and every time when I install recovery android will not to boot. Is there any idea about my problem. Sorry for my english
Do you want to stay on 4.2 or 4.3, just flash the kernel you need via fastboot or flashtool then that will give you a recovery to then install custom roms. As you are on a unlocked bootloader it is a lot easier to root just search for supersu cwm installation and that will root your device.

Okay then we'll look for doomlords stock kernel with cwm take the boot. Img out if that and flash in flashtool, then load up your phone and enter cwm. Flash rom you need (a lot of Roms are pre rooted. If not then once loaded new rom install supersu zip and there you are done. Kernel with cwm, custom rom and rooted device

Root with recovery

Hi all. I recently reverted back to a stock rom 757 I flashed the ftf using flash tool. However I still have twrp working (bootloader unlocked) is it possible to root using the Recovery by flashing a zip? Instead of having to install a whole new rom?

The recovery is in your kernel not in the system partition, that's why you kept recoevry
You are rooted
In order to have a superuser app to manage your root rights just flash SuperSU.zip from chainfire (Google it)

[Q] root question

Can anyone confirm if Android 4.4 with build # 14.3.A.0.757 cant be rooted for now?

Please do not open new threads for something trivial like this.
It can be rooted, not directly but it's rootable.
You have million of threads with that subject.

What is THIS? > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711982 are you so lazy to find it?
3 steps > Downgrade to .534 via Flashtool, Install DualRecovery, then follow the steps from the link starting from the line How to Update to .757.
Still your Android 4.4 not rooted, then you are very lazy!
downgrade to 534 install beta or new dual recovery by Nut and directly flash 757 zip on your Z1 and do not reboot go back to main recovery screen and click reboot button~>power off and flash stripped 757 ftf via flashtool

[Q] Help needed: new Z1 owner, cannot figure out how to get rooted .283

Hey guys,
After hours and hours of searching forums and trying things, I decided I need help.
I just bought a Z1 (yes, they're still for sale) and I wanted to update the firmware to the newest .283 lollipop. Also, I want to root my device.
I have rooted Android phones before, and I have some experience flashing Custom ROMs etc.
As I have understood I have to downgrade to a 4.4 ROM first, to get root. Then my plan was to install recovery and install .283 Pre-rooted ZIP in Recovery.
So here's what I did:
-Flash 14.1.G.1.534 firmware
-Root using KingoROOT
-try to install recovery
-boot into recovery
-install pre-rooted .283 Lollipop ZIP
-phone won't boot anymore.
I am still able to flash the newest .283 with the FTF file, but then obviously it's unrooted. I also cannot figure out how to flash recovery after flashing .283 FTF. (Flashing recovery seems to work, but I cannot enter recovery via adb or otherwise)
So if anyone can tell me what I am missing, please do!
for what i know the ftf files can't be prerooted. so download a prerooted zip file and install it from a recovery. btw if u're gonna try any custom rom, don't forget to backup your drm before unlocking bootloader. That's a must for xperia devices
Thanks. However, I can't get Recovery to work after flashing Lollipop firmware. And when I downgrade and then flash the ZIP from recovery, the phone won't boot.
I succeeded! The steps that led me to this result:
-flash KK 14.4.A.0.108 in Flashtool
-Root the firmware using Flashtool/SuperSU method
-flash Recovery using Dual Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2647487)
-Flash the Pre-Rooted ZIP in Recovery
-Success!!
