Flash 534, root, install CWM or TWRP, then flash pre-rooted stock 257 firmware.

It's out there somewhere, but I don't remember where and I don't have time to find it. Use the search feature and do some reading and I'm sure you'll find it. Especially check the thread dedicated to 257 firmware

Flash "C6903 14.1.G.1.534 Generic DK 1276-1249_R5A" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
then root with kingo , then make supersu update & system app (2 restarts required)
then go to Sony update and update OTA.
You will have latest version 14.1.G.2.257 ( it is stock Euro - no bloat) with root.

use this method.
I have a question too. I have a C6902, can I flash C6903 into my device?

No, it might brick your phone.
My device is C6902, and now I'm using .257 firmware. If I using flashtool to flash .534 but not wipe data, does it cause brick my phone?

No, it will not brick your phone if you choose not to wipe data. But make sure you're flashing a C6902 534 firmware.

Help a brother out
When the Z1 first launched, I was able to root the device.
I'm ignorant enough to not know if I had unlocked the bootloader.
General forum research tells me that if I'm not sure if I unlocked the bootloader, it means I didn't unlock the bootloader.
I updated my Z1 (C9606) to 14.1.G.2.257 Build.
I'm still running Android 4.2.2
Is there a way to root device without unlocking?
If so, could someone point towards the thread I need to follow?
thanks!

Hello,
flash back to .534 with flashtool then root and custom recovery your device and put a custom pre rootet rom on.I think that is the only solution also the same point as the threat starter asks for you only can use pre rootet roms for now.
best regards and wishes,
Nico

What if rolled back to .534, custom recovered, rooted and then tried to flash .290 (JB 4.3)?
Has anyone tried this?
Is there any way of getting stock 4.3 rooted?

They should work without a problem
I have not tried any ROM yet but I use the custom TWRP and CWM recovery for locked bootloaders and it works perfectly
C5306 is basically the same as C5303, the only difference is bands, which I believe should be in baseband which is not flashed via roms or kernels, they are extra, tho they are flashed via flashtool ftf file

Great, though I've got it rooted, I'll give it a try to flash the rec. My phone is from Fido, and in the "*#*#7378423#*#*" menu it shows "bootloader unlock allowed: no" so I found no way to unlock the BL

Downgrade to FW ending in .534
install dualrecovery
Flash chainfires superSU http://download.chainfire.eu/204
Update to @[NUT] 's .681 pre-rooted rom
Done.
Greg.
Thanks for the reply
Will the downgrade keep drm keys?
Do you have a guide to install dual recovery?
Do I need to unlock bootloader prior to flashing pre-rooted rom or can this be unlocked once rooted so I can backup drm keys via TA backup?
Thanks
Glen

To get Root you don't have to Unlock Bootlader at all. If you will then when you get root, Backup TA first and then Unlock Bootlader (not recommended)
